In My Lifetime...Best Album By Year

My buddy and I got into an argument yesterday about 2013's best record. He was raving about QOTSA, The Black Angels, etc..and my stance was that it didn't make sense to even have the discussion before January 1st (especially with "Hesitation Marks" lingering out there). The conversation got me thinking though and I decided to put together an album of the year master list (going back to 1986). These sorts of lists are usually pretty boring to read through, but when you actually have to consider things like "Nothing's Shocking" VS. "...And Justice For All", "Mer De Noms" VS. "Kid A", or "Diamond Eyes" VS. "The Trouble With Angels", it uncovers some interesting retrospectives.

    1986: Master Of Puppets (Metallica)
1987: Appetite For Destruction (Guns N' Roses)
    1988: Nothing's Shocking (Jane's Addiction)
1989: Pretty Hate Machine (Nine Inch Nails)
1990: Ritual de lo Habitual (Jane's Addiction)
    1991: Nevermind (Nirvana)
1992: Rage Against The Machine (RATM)
    1993: In Utero (Nirvana)
1994: The Downward Spiral (Nine Inch Nails)
1995: Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (Smashing Pumpkins)
    1996: Fantastic Planet (Failure)
    1997: OK Computer (Radiohead)
    1998: Mechanical Animals (Marilyn Manson)
1999: The Fragile (Nine Inch Nails)
2000: Mer De Noms (A Perfect Circle)
    2001: Lateralus (Tool)
2002: Songs For The Deaf (Queens Of The Stone Age)
2003: Thirteen Step (A Perfect Circle)
    2004: Contraband (Velvet Revolver)
2005: Lullabies To Paralyze (Queens Of The Stone Age)
2006: Black Holes And Revelations (Muse)
2007: Baby 81 (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club)
    2008: Death Magnetic (Metallica)
    2009: Them Crooked Vultures (TCV)
2010: The Trouble With Angels (Filter)
    2011: Wasting Light (Foo Fighters)
    2012: Koi No Yokan (Deftones)

Most of my favourite albums came out in the decade before I was born. Nonetheless:
    1990: Codeine - Frigid Stars
    1991: Slowdive - Just for a Day
1992: Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies
1993: Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion
1994: Bark Psychosis - Hex / Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman (These albums are my two absolute favourites of the decade and I have great difficulty picking one over the other.)
    1995: Slowdive - Pygmalion
    1996: Unwound - Repetition
    1997: Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out
1998: PJ Harvey - Is This Desire?
1999: Orbital - The Middle of Nowhere
    2000: Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
    2001: Radiohead - Amnesiac
    2002: For Against - Coalesced
    2003: Massive Attack - 100th Window
    2004: Tim Hecker - Mirages
2005: M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us
2006: Aphex Twin - Chosen Lords
2007: A Place to Bury Strangers - A Place to Bury Strangers
    2008: Have A Nice Life - Deathconciousness
    2009: Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs
    2010: Autechre - Oversteps
2011: Motion Sickness of Time Travel - Luminaries and Synastry
    2012: Swans - The Seer

Wow, it's eye-opening how many of these records I have never heard! Especially some of the newer stuff. It seems like I am fighting the fight with the same bands that I listened to 10 years ago (rather than branching out)..

I also put together a list of most disappointing albums (by year) since 1986. I suppose this could have been a seperate thread, but why waste the space.
    1986: Van Halen (5150)
1987: Red Hot Chili Peppers (The Uplift Mofo Party Plan)
    1988: U2 (Rattle And Hum)
1989: The Rolling Stones (Steel Wheels)
    1990: Phish (Lawn Boy)
1991: Ozzy Osbourne- No More Tears
1992: The Black Crowes (The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion)
1993 Guns N' Roses (The Spaghetti Incident?)
1994: Pink Floyd (The Division Bell)
1995: Alice In Chains (Alice In Chains)
    1996: Pearl Jam (No Code)
    1997: Metallica (Re-Load)
    1998: Pearl Jam (Yield)
1999: Bush (The Science Of Things)
    2000: Smashing Pumpkins (Machina)
    2001: Garbage (Beautiful Garbage)
    2002: Oasis (Heathen Chemistry)
    2003: Metallica (St. Anger)
    2004: A Perfect Circle (eMotive)
2005: System Of A Down (Mezmerize)
    2006: Incubus (Light Grenades)
    2007: Silverchair (Young Modern)
2008: Guns N' Roses (Chinese Democracy)
2009: Marilyn Manson (The High End Of Low)
2010: Stone Temple Pilots (Stone Temple Pilots)
2011: Beady Eye (Different Gear, Still Speeding)
    2012: Soundgarden (King Animal)

That list is invalid considering No Code and Yield are arguably two of Pearl Jam's better albums. But no, I guess Marylin Manson is better than them all.

1989- The Stone Roses- The Stone Roses
    1990- Sonic Youth- Goo
    1991- Primal Scream- Scremadelica

    1995- Pulp- Different Class
    1996- Beck- Odelay
    1997- Radiohead- OK Computer
1998- Neutral Milk Hotel- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
1999- The Dismemberment Plan- Emergency and I
    2000- Radiohead- Kid A
    2001- Radiohead- Amnesiac

If you pooled all of Manson's records and all of PJ's records, Manson would have 3 of the top 4. Granted the man continues to soil his name every chance he gets (and PJ is still a great live act to this day), but the "trilogy" is incredible. Yield ain't even the same sport as Mechanical Animals.

On this site, sure, if you're doing this from a non NIN fan standpoint, PJ smokes Manson and it's not even close.

All music's subjective, so I'll take the liberty of calling bullshit on that one, thank you. Personally I can't stand Pearl Jam, and despite being a NIN fan I have no love for Mechanical Animals, or the vast majority of Manson's output. I do think Antichrist Superstar and Holy Wood are spectacular works though.

Anyone else finding it a bit weird how rarely Trent's work is popping into these lists, with this being a NIN fan site? Year Zero's only appeared once so far, and none of his other post-Fragile releases.

I don't find it that weird. I love Trent's work, but not every album is going to be my album of the year choice, because sometimes there's just something better that came out that year. That doesn't make the Nine Inch Nails albums that came out in those years bad. It just means that I wasn't AS impressed as I was with the album I chose.

All of which is fair enough, I just think it's a curious trend.

I don't dislike a single NIN album and I reckon they'd all appear on my list if I was doing top 10-20 of each year. TDS is still one of my favourite albums of all-time, but it had the poor fortune of being released the same year as two of my all-time favourites that rank a little higher. I'd probably put the Fragile 3rd in 1999 (Surrender by The Chemical Brothers is my 2nd place). 2005 and 2007 were kind of slow-ish years for me, so I wouldn't rule out a top-10 spot for With_Teeth or Year Zero respectively.

Because Yield wasn't one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 1998. Think outside the box for a second.

Despite this being an NIN site, it doesn't mean that it's all we listen to. I love TDS and Broken, but in those respective years, I had at least five albums I thought were better. As for the material past 1999, while I won't tell how you much I sort of wanted to put With Teeth in for 2005, he's put out way better music the decade beforehand.

I was gutted that I had to leave these out. 1997 is a clusterfuck between OKC, Urban Hymns, Ladies and Gentlemen We're Floating in Space, and Brighten the Corners.

I also put together a list of most disappointing albums (by year) since 1986. I suppose this could have been a seperate thread, but why waste the space.
    1986: Van Halen (5150)
1987: Red Hot Chili Peppers (The Uplift Mofo Party Plan)
    1988: U2 (Rattle And Hum)
1989: The Rolling Stones (Steel Wheels)
    1990: Phish (Lawn Boy)
1991: Ozzy Osbourne- No More Tears
1992: The Black Crowes (The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion)
1993 Guns N' Roses (The Spaghetti Incident?)
1994: Pink Floyd (The Division Bell)
1995: Alice In Chains (Alice In Chains)
    1996: Pearl Jam (No Code)
    1997: Metallica (Re-Load)
    1998: Pearl Jam (Yield)
1999: Bush (The Science Of Things)
    2000: Smashing Pumpkins (Machina)
    2001: Garbage (Beautiful Garbage)
    2002: Oasis (Heathen Chemistry)
    2003: Metallica (St. Anger)
    2004: A Perfect Circle (eMotive)
2005: System Of A Down (Mezmerize)
    2006: Incubus (Light Grenades)
    2007: Silverchair (Young Modern)
2008: Guns N' Roses (Chinese Democracy)
2009: Marilyn Manson (The High End Of Low)
2010: Stone Temple Pilots (Stone Temple Pilots)
2011: Beady Eye (Different Gear, Still Speeding)
    2012: Soundgarden (King Animal)

You didn't like Mezmerize or King Animal? Because I loved those albums. Also the first half of AIC is good but then it just seems to drag on forever and becomes really dull which ruins the good parts of the album imo.

This threat reminds me of the "thread of lists" that I've wanted to create for a while... but I'm too shy to start a thread... Anyway....

1982 - Blade Runner OST (though released somewhat later) - Vangelis
    1983 - Let's Dance - David Bowie
    1984 - The Pearl - Brian Eno/Harold Budd
1985 - Hounds of Love - Kate Bush
    1986 - Power Spot - Jon Hassell
    1987 - Actually - Pet Shop Boys
1988 - Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk
1989 - The Sensual World - Kate Bush
1990 - Mustt Mustt - Nusret Fateh Ali Khan
    1991 - Laughing Stock - Talk Talk
1992 - Stick Around For Joy - Sugarcubes
    1993 - Very - Pet Shop Boys
1994 - Selected Ambient Works Volume II - Aphex Twin
    1995 - Tilt - Scott Walker
    1996 - The Score - Fugees
    1997 - Homogenic - Björk
1998 - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - Lauryn Hill
    1999 - Midnite Vultures - Beck
    2000 - Khmer - Nils Petter Molvaer
    2001 - Vespertine - Björk
2002 - A Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay
    2003 - Mystic Chords/Sacred Spaces - Steve Roach
    2004 - Chiaroscuro - Arve Henriksen
2005 - With Teeth - Nine Inch Nails
    2006 - FutureSexx/LoveSounds - Justin Timberlake
    2007 - Strjon - Arve Henriksen
2008 - The Slip - Nine Inch Nails (I think it was a bad year)
2009 - Last Night the Moon Came Dropping its Clothes in the Street - Jon Hassell
2010 - And Poppies From Kandahar - Jan Bang
    2011 - Strange Mercy - St. Vincent
2012 - Love This Giant - David Byrne & St. Vincent

I actually think that the best time for music ended when I was born. In my hypothetical top ten of the 80s list, half of them are released in the years 1980 and 1981.

It's not that I don't like those records, but they all let me down in different ways. AIC was not a strong follow-up to Dirt (EP's don't count). It's a sludgy, unfocused affair and you can tell Layne's issues had an impact on the finished product. There are some classics on there for sure (Over Now), but still a disappointment.

King Animal didn't have any standout tracks for me. Cornell still churns out great songs in other projects (As Hope And Promise Fade, You Know My Name, Moth) and I could see Soundgarden coming back strong with another release. But when Crooked Steps and Non-State Actor are the best songs on an album, it's tough not to be a bit disappointed. The production and guitar tones were both spotty as shit throughout.

In My Lifetime...Best Album By Year

I just wanna say thank you for this thread. It's neat, and inspiring me to sample these albums, because as of now I can't say I have clear favorites for the majority of the years since my 1987. As much as I love music, sometimes I'm simply lazy enough to not branch out as much as I know I want to, even though I am most open-minded. Consider me nudged.

1980 is a tie between David Bowie's Scary Monsters and Joy Division's Closer

    runners up:

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (melt)
    Paul McCartney - McCartney II
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Kaleidoscope
Tom Waits - Heartattack and Vine
    X - Los Angeles
Talking Heads - Remain in Light

I would also like to say that Tangerine Dream's album Tangram is one of the last cool things they did, and that the self titled debut album by Killing Joke is also awesome... and if there was more room, I'd mention Gary Numan's "Telekon" and "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" by the Dead Kennedys...

Oh yeah, and "Seventeen Seconds" by The Cure

and "Sandinista!" by the Clash and "In the Flat Field" by Bauhaus should also have made the list. Also, 1980 was the year Yello released their debut album, and so, I'm going to mention that too.

aaaaaaaaand, since I can't even make up my mind out of that list really, I guess I'm going to stop there. Reading this thread makes me feel old, but a lot of awesome music came out the year I was born.

Agreed. But it's still a tough choice over Aenema in 1996! I was never huge into songs like Jimmy and H until recently, so it's becoming an increasingly tough decision. When I saw Ken Andrews perform in 2006, it was kind of sad seeing the band First Wave Hello backing him up. Daylight isn't the same without Greg Edwards. Not that that's relevant in this discussion..
