    Best *CD* double albums?

Random thought for the morning. What are the best double-albums from the CD era? Obviously there are loads of vinyl ones. I'm struggling a bit. The Fragile, obviously. Mellon Collie perhaps. Compilations don't count. I see a Godspeed one come up quite a lot in lists but I haven't heard it.

Edit: oh I remember why I'm wondering now. It's a spin-out from contemplating the disappointment of "Stadium Arcadium".

Drukqs, which is probably my favourite Aphex Twin album.

Stadium Arcadium would have been a fucking stellar album if they trimmed the fat down from 28 to 12 or 14 songs.

The first double-album CD that came to mind is "Around The Well" by Iron and Wine, if you're into acoustic-guitar tunes you'll probably really enjoy it. "In Your Honor" by Foo Fighters is another good one, the album is split into 2 discs, 1 a bit more hard rock, 1 a bit lighter & acoustic, but I would also say that it probably would have fared better if they'd cut it down to 1 album.

Also, not really a double-album, per-se, but the Immersion box set for Pink Floyds "Dark Side of the Moon" has a few discs; the original album, the remastered album from 2000-something, and a disc of early demos that sound very different than what ended up on the record. It's really cool to listen to them back-to-back to see all of the changes that came about.

One of the best double albums I can think of (Besides The Fragile) is Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus. It's one of my favorite Cave albums. Also, Druqks is great too and the newer great double album I could think of is Autechre - Exai.

    Best *CD* double albums?

A few more that some work colleagues came up with: some Metallica and orchestra live thing (hm perhaps there are a few live double albums); Mellon collie; use your illusion; shaking the habitual.

Metallica has 3 or 4 live double-albums. Forgot about Use Your Illusion, it's definitely a good one, too.

Mellon Collie and the Fragile do it for me. Stadium Arcadium has incredible bloat IMO.

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below...Of course, one might argue that it's not a real double album, but two separate albums released in one package.

The 2 greatest multiple-disc albums of the modern era both came out in September of 1999.

I don't know why it didn't click with me last year, but sweet Lord in heaven, Swans' The Seer is fucking destroying me right now. It might just be the album to finally get me into post-rock, a genre I'm often bored by. I've never truly wanted to listen to something for two hours like I do this album.

the vinyl track sequencing is (despite the breaks in a couple of the songs for side-changes) far superior, in my opinion.

also, i don't think Swans (or even that album in particular) are really considered post-rock...but they are fucking incredible.

Love the acoustic disc of this, was listening to it tonight. 'Still' is possibly my fave ever Foo's song...

No-ones said Baroness - Yellow and Green yet
That kinda makes me sad, so good.
Flaming Lips - Embyronic was billed as a double album, but they fit it on one CD

Drukqs, Mellon Collie, The Fragile: all full of filler, all would have benefitted from being cut down to one disc.
In fact I can't think of a single double album that isn't too long. Even The Beatles' White Album's disc two is full of dross.

    *heresy, runs for cover*

No mention of System of a down Mezmerize/hypnotize? Granted it's as bloated as any of the CDs mentioned above. But the freakin' CDs slid in to each other! I remember buying the 1st half and waiting the 6 months for the second half to come out so I could connect the two.

Pink Floyd's Pulse with the blinking LED was a pretty cool double album as well.
