Roxy Music tonight at the United Center.

(Tried remembering last time we saw them: 2002! This will definitely be … different.)

Random thought: there should be a policy where people in the GA area strictly aligned by height, with the shortest people in the front and tallest in the back. Everyone in the fucking fedora hats or in caps with brim pointed all the way upward should be escorted out.

God, I would have loved that. I’m fairly short, and spent the entirety of my GA years looking at the back of a tall dude with giant hair.

The Etiquette of Being Tall at a Concert

I am 5'10" ish but also have a problem with people being behind me so I'm usually on the side so I'm close enough to see but also out of the way of people.

    The concerts thread

Just saw Iron Maiden for the second time tonight. Last time was like 2005? at Ozzfest. I’ll be damned if these old bastards still don’t put in a hell of a show.

Also, Within Temptation opened for them. I believe they are a band from the Netherlands and I’m pretty sure they days this was their first tour in the states. Apparently they’ve been a band for 25 years. Also quite good as well.

Also saw Lamb of God last Wednesday. And perhaps May be going to see Judas Priest next month with the same work buddy as from tonight.

Going to see Afghan Whigs tonight. An old favorite. Haven't seen them in a long time but they've always been great live. The bummer of it is Amyl & the Sniffers are playing in another venue at the same time. I'd already bought the Whigs tickets when Amyl was announced. Not the end of the world as I saw Amyl in May.

They were only ok in Seattle. The sound was really loud but not good like NIN. You couldn't really pick out the instruments out of the din a lot of the time. I wasn't feeling well so I left a bit early. I go back a long way with the Whigs. The first time I saw them was when Congregation was out. NIN has spoiled me as far as sound goes. Also, I know it's an old record but they didn't do much off Black Love which is one of my favorite records of all time. First show I've seen them not do Faded since it was released. It was missed. Pink Mountaintops were ok too but had the opening band blues, haha.

Got to see 'The Mars Volta' on Saturday and Sunday this past weekend. Despite being at two shitty sounding venues, the band sounded great and the setlists were fucking AWESOME. So glad I made it to those shows.

Going to Smashing Pumpkins/Jane's in Seattle on Saturday. Taking my 10 year old. Took him to Pearl Jam when he was 5 and he doesn't remember much of it, so this is kind of like his first show. We'll be 3rd row center on the floor so it should be a good time.

Scratch that! Lindsey Buckingham just got cancelled due to "illness in the band". Refunds automatically processed.

So just The Dresden Dolls this Friday!

I just need to vent and this seems like the best place to do it.

This last year has sucked as far as concerts goes, just one thing after another.

Shows I have had tickets for that I did not attend
    -Ghost Lincoln
    -Puscifer Omaha
    -Gary Numan Omaha
    -Tenacious D St Paul
-Ghost again this time with Mastodon Peoria
    -Rammstein Chicago
    -NIN and Ministry Cleveland
    -Hellfest France
    -The Prodigy Liverpool ENG

Shows that I have had tickets for that I actually attended
-Rob Zombie and Mudvayne Council Bluffs
-Rammstein Minneapolis and I was so fucking sick during this show it was such a struggle to get through
-Iron Maiden here in Sioux Falls

(and I did see the stones last october, so that kinda counts)

Really hopeful this next year is better. With RATM getting canceled the only thing I have tickets for is Fear Factory/Static X. I dont know what I could have done differently, I got sick and missed a bunch of time from work and my gf was also out of work. I nearly killed myself with all the overtime I have been working, I dont think I could have done any more. But like they always say, you will always regret the concerts you dont go to, you will never regret the ones you do go to. Especially missing that NIN show in Cleveland, that really hurts.

(thats only partially true, I went to see Devildriver open for Hatebreed and a bunch of other hardcore bands, none of which I liked, and Devildrivers tour bus broke down so i drove to Omaha for nothing, show sucked and we left after an hour or so)

Flaming Lips & Particle Kid were amazing last night. It was a make up show & the Lips played a solid 2 hours which is longer than usual. Particle Kid's opening set didn't disappoint. I think Micah Nelson is more talented than his brother & the set was great. Micah also came out for a song with the Lips & did a blistering solo.
There were a lot of surprises in the Lips set both in what they played & what they didn't. There was only 1 song from The Soft Bulletin & I didn't even mind. Killer light laser/show & the usual special effects like Wayne defeating the pink robot. A couple of surprise cover versions. They did the pschedelic Borderline (yes, the Madonna song). Pretty obscure & very cool. They brough out 14 year old Nell Smith from Burnaby BC for a smoking version of NIck Cave's Red Right Hand. Totally awesome. I had forgotten about the record she did with the Lips of Nick Cave covers. A very talented young lady who I think will go far.
I'm paying today but I'm glad I went. The Lips are always great & always different. Go see them if you get the chance.

I arrived late and missed Sleep Token. But Northlane and the main act still to come!

forgot I had God Forbid's hometown reunion show tonight. Bleeding Through, Shai Hulud & Nora too. God Forbid was tight as hell. Sounded like they've been practicing nonstop.

Madonna is starting her tour in Vancouver, then Seattle. Arena shows. As I've never seen her I checked prices just for giggles. I like some of her stuff especially Ray of Light. For mediocre seats they were $400-$500. Hard pass on that! I could've seen her once in Vegas but Prince was playing a smaller venue the same night. I'm way more into Prince. I ended up with a killer seat for Prince from the casino. Same money would've put me in the rafters for Madonna. Sorry Madge, the budget can't take over a $1000 for a pair of tickets. I'm taking service charges, etc into account.

The presales that occurred today were likely weighted towards VIP packages and Official Platinum, so not surprised to hear even the crappy seats were obscenely priced. My guess is that later presales will have (limited) quantities of slightly more reasonable tickets, but of course the scalpers will be all over those. Still, at least it's not as bad as Taylor Swift - or Depeche Mode for that matter.

After getting burned by procrastinating on DM recently, I decided not to sleep on this one and paid way too much for a couple of GA tickets for MSG. I'm a long-time (albeit somewhat selective) fan, and after failing to catch any tours prior to MDNA, I can sort of justify it on the basis of it being a greatest hits tour. Plus, following the injury-ridden Madame X theater tour - which was weirdly wonderful but far from the Platonic ideal of a Madonna show - it's hard to ignore the fact that we're much closer to the end of her days as a physically vigorous performer than the beginning...

A little bummed that I'm going to have to miss the upcoming Yves Tumor tour. I really liked them when they opened for NIN. I got to the shows I went to early so that I could catch them. This time they're coming the same night as Hoodoo Gurus. I've had tickets for Hoodoo for literally years. They had to cancel their tour at least 3 times because of COVID. They're a long time fave & I'm pretty sure this will be the last time I get to see them. I'll catch Yves next time.
