Definitely. And I guess you either like that, or not.
It definitely seems to have a couple guitar licks that are, you know, like self plagiarism, and the same could be said for some of the rhythmic elements.
I still like it a lot, personally, BUT, I gotta say that that same lead riff is getting a little old.
Is it just me or does anyone else get a Dead Can Dance vibe from the beginning?
Agree with everyone. Lots of recycled ideas in the title track. I'm hearing:
- (-) Ions
- Right in Two
- Reflection
- Eulogy
- Grand Canyon (Puscifer)
probably more that I didn't get yet.
In conclusion, i liked Descending and Invincible much better and I expect other tracks also to be better.

Ayy, well these guys can't be expected to be doing anything groundbreaking at this stage. We gotta just roll with it...
Will hold on to listening to the whole thing August 30th. Haven't listened to the other tracks as well, but I'm really intrigued on that packaging. Hard to believe that this will look actually cool, but can't wait to see it revealed.
The cover art had some time to sink in and I dislike it more and more, which really bugs me. Even if some might argue that Grey's work is getting hold I usually really dig his style. We will see how it all plays out soon.
I love the new track.
So are psychedelics the "fear inoculum?"
No vinyl? I legit don't have anything that even plays cd's. And it's $63.90 on Amazon, hahahahahahahahahahaha. Pass.
I think, based on what Maynard has said, that it means that you take in experiences/problems easier as you age...you're not afraid of much after having so much experience going through bad things or whatever. So taking it in etc just means that you embrace the changes (or you should). Some people don't learn this, and they get angrier and more stubborn as they age. Hopefully that makes sense.
Really digging it. Maynard sounds great. He is getting older and cannot do the same vocal range he hit in 2001 -- but he is really playing to his strengths here. Production is on-point.
Lyrics are cool: https://genius.com/Tool-fear-inoculum-lyrics
After one listen I tend to agree with those that say it sounds awfully derivative. I don't not like it but I'll need more listens. I have a feeling I will like it more within the context of the album.
With that said...2 initial thoughts: 1. it's probably about 4 minutes too long for my taste and 2. the vocal style starting at 7:36 seems very out of place and awkward.
Gonna park this track until the rest of the album is released.
The new Tool song is nothing they haven’t already done to death before and therein is about 5 minutes too long.
I was hoping they’d learned the lesson of 10,000 Days of Sleep but nah.
I agree with most of that (maybe not Eulogy? I'll have to listen again), but I still dig it. It's unmistakably Tool, to be sure. I can understand that some may not be into this first song, but what's mainly disappointing for me is:
1. People judge & dismiss music IMMEDIATELY. Jesus, at least give it a day to sink in maybe?
2. No merch or album + merch bundle whatsoever? I don't care as much about vinyl (which I'm sure is coming later), but this feels surprisingly bare-bones for a release 13 years in the making. I'm surprised they don't even have a few new shirts that people could buy with their first new Tool release since 2006.
meh
Yep. Sounds like a tool song.
The groove around 7:04 reminds me of Melissa Etheridge's "I'm The Only One".
