Oh my God. I never realized how EVERY SINGLE PERSON in that movie stays glued to the middle third of the frame for almost the entire film. Mind blown.

When I was a little girl, I found a Playgirl and was baffled by the hole. I finally decided that you must put clitorises inside the penis to have sex.

I was like 11 when I saw my first porn, and I was totally unprepared. A guy was going down on a girl, and my first thought was,

"that is so freaking gross. Look at all that spit and goop. I am never doin' that shit."

Most films pre-2000 or so are like that. The idea being that when the sides were cut off for home viewing the shots would still look framed properly without having to edit the movie with pan and scan.
(Or, at least, as far as I understand it.)

I'm not sure Kubrick was the kind of man who would compromise his vision like that though... He adapted NASA camera just because Barry Lindon HAD to be lit with actual candles, so the lighting would be perfectly correct. So, I don't think he ever thought "ohnoes", my movie is gonna get cropped, better put uninteresting stuff on the sides !"

Oh wow, up until you posted this, I had no idea what the joke was either... I thought it was because he hucked one of the blue chips out of his pile, and I was like "That's not very funny" but thanks to your post I looked deeper into the video to get it, lol!
