8 years after premiering the Reflections shows at the same event, The Cure are returning to Sydney to "world premiere" the 30th anniversary Disintegration concerts. Supposedly they'll be doing the full album as well as the b-sides from the era. They did go on to play Reflections in London, LA, and NYC so hopefully this means the same thing for later this year?

I would say probably better than not shot you get a NIN show out of a Cure curated festival in LA, no?

Other topics discussed in the interview:

    ‘Final’ studio album?

Smith has been dropping hints about a new Cure studio album for months, and he talked at more length in Friday’s interview. He said he expects it out before Christmas, and that he still needs to record vocals — including for a pair of 10-minute-long songs — and the band may need to record one more song.

“My only dilemma at the moment is getting a running order that works,” he said. “I’ve gone through so many different running orders. My favorite running order is so utterly bereft of hope, it’s so morose. I played it to a couple of people whose opinions I value and they just look at me and think it’s so dismal, in a really good way. It’s just relentless. My favorite running order is about 47 minutes of just relentless doom and gloom.”

Because of this, Smith said, he’s considering getting the band to record a he’d written and demoed but hadn’t planned to use. “But I actually think the album needs just something ever-so-slightly off kilter to make the rest of the songs work better,” he said.

The hosts mentioned they’d spoken to Cure keyboardist Roger O’Donnell the day before, and he’d suggested this would be the final Cure album. Smith, of course, noted that he declares every album he makes the last Cure album, and had done so for decades.

“As far as I’m concerned, yeah, this is it,” he said. “But I’ve gone into every album thinking this is it, and not glibly. I actually think this is it. … (but) we’ve already recorded two albums worth of stuff. It’s either going to be a double album or there’s two albums made, if I can get the words and the singing done.

“So it won’t be the last Cure album, right.”

He said the album was pretty much finished earlier in the year, now he’s saying the lyrics and vocals aren’t done?

No, how he's saying there'll be two albums. But that's the same shit he said about 4:13 Dream.

Oh yeah, definitely. And for Wish. I just mean, months ago, he pretty much said the new album was finished. But now to hear that be hasn’t written or recorded the vocals... bit of a kick in the nuts.

By the way, what’s everyone’s opinion of the best soundboard recordings of Step Into The Light and It Can Never Be The Same?

Not sure if there are any. Not really any SBDs have made it out of any shows the past 4 or 5 years

Robert will curate another festival like Hyde Park, this time in Los Angeles.

Article also has a bit more about the new album, etc.

Not enough to get me out there, but yes yes and more yes to Chelsea Wolfe being part of that. Fuck yes.

*edit: also doesn't seem like Throwing Muses do an awful lot anymore so that's interesting to see that name there

Torn between getting tickets since I also love The Twilight Sad and Chelsea Wolfe. Do you guys think they'll do a proper U.S. tour or is this gonna be it?

I think RS was recently quoted as saying no US tour until 2020 after the new album is out.

Take that with as many grains of salt as will fit into the whole damn shaker.

I bought tickets to the festival and am flying from the east coast to see it. The last time I had the chance to see the cure was maybe five years ago I was living in Portland, OR and they had a show on my birthday and I was in Maui with my EX wife haha. I need a vacation anyway and have never been to CA. Hopefully the Deftones will pull out their cover of If only tonight we could sleep . Never seen the cure but have been a fan for 25+ years

First Disintegration show is in the bag.

On a related note, I’d have given a limb to have been there.

I live in Sydney and am not going to any of the shows because of the stupid fucking ballot system to get tickets. Applied, was unsuccessful for every show.

Saw they played Burn as an encore. Only played that a few times now, right? I apparently saw it's first ever performance that magical weekend in Nola for Voodoo Fest 2013. PJ, NIN & The Cure headlined.

Nah, they’ve played it 77 times since:
