I didn’t listen to that album much. I think I got turned off it when apparently RS re-recorded (supposedly) the vocals for The Glove deluxe edition? The only song I really remember liking is “And All Around Us The Mermaids Sang” — an early premonition to Sirensong?

I keep on wondering what Wild Mood Swings would have been like if Robert stuck with “Bare” (the early title) and retained a somber mood throughout it. And kept Bare as the final song, of course.

I had no idea this existed, with completely early/alternate lyrics.

    Thanks!

Two questions: why was “All Mine” released on Porno DE cut down to less than three minutes?

Why doesn’t a good fidelity/clear recording of “Ariel” exist? Even the one put on The Top DE is hard to listen to. The other version out there is superior but cuts off at the end. Apparently that’s why RS included the crappier version on The Top, under the assumption that everyone already had the better sounding version.

Apparently the former is not actually from a BBC session.

I think I will prefer outtakes from Wish or even Wild Mood Swing.

Possession is the only one released so far, right? I remember reading RS’s comments about it in the Join The Dots booklet and he said originally Bloodflowers was going to have an entirely different sound.

TBH, Possession and Coming Up do nothing for me.

'Spilt Milk' is an unreleased song from the Bloodflowers era as well. This would have fit well on the album

Oh yeah, that’s one of my favourites. No idea why that wasn’t put on the album.

Strangely, shares the same instrumentation as Ching Chang Chong.

I think the story was Ching Chang Chong was recorded in 97 or so. I guess he revised it for Bloodflowers

Probably saying that to get Robert to pull his finger out. The amount of times band members have come and gone in that band, I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Meanwhile, I really want to read this!

    https://www.dekmag.com/news/2021/07/14/thecurewms

I hope it will pop up online somewhere:

In 1996, The Cure released Wild Mood Swings, an album that sold well but somehow failed to find its way into fans’ affections. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, this 35-page feature, curated by Robert Smith and featuring contributions from producer Steve Lyon, asks if it’s time to reassess the band’s most underrated album.
Based on Smith’s own memories of the period between 1993 and 1997, when Wild Mood Swings was written, recorded and toured, it tells a story of wrong turns and forgotten gems, musical innovation and artistic overreach, Halloween parties and the meaninglessness of time. In a detailed analysis of the album, Smith reveals which are his favourite songs as well as which should – and shouldn’t – have been included on the final track listing.
A selection of rarely seen images accompany the article, including behind-the-scenes photographs from the recording of Wild Mood Swings taken by Smith and Lyon, while the cover of issue 03 is by Andy Vella, the designer responsible for so much classic Cure artwork.

Hopefully it'll all blow over. People do leave the band a lot but this is Simon. I think he only left once and that was nearly 40 years ago. No Simon, no Cure. And if Robert doesn't have his band to tour he probably won't even consider putting out a record. So if Simon really were to leave I think it's more significant than if it were any other member save for Robert himself.

Edit: also, yeah I'd like to see Robert's tracklist for WMS

Don’t forget they did that show when Simon wasn’t available with his son Eden playing bass!

Yeah, and I don't mean that another musician couldn't play his parts but it just wouldn't be the same. His post specifically mentioned betrayal so its not quite the same as replacing him for a few shows due to health. Words like that being thrown around can change everything. What if he recorded his part of the new album already and he leaves and the rest of the band wants to record it all again or something like that?

I'm still hoping this will turn out to be nothing more than an argument that got out of hand. Simon's bass was a huge part in defining the Cure's sound. Especially on earlier records. My favorite bassist of all time so I'd hate to see him leave now. And with something as unceremonious as a facebook post no less.

No idea. I've seen speculation being thrown around on other forums but honestly I don't think anybody really knows. I just want it to be a drunk facebook post that they'll be able to laugh about in a week.

Yikes. Big fucking oof, if this is really true. Does this mean Robert is going to re-record Simon's bass parts on the new album(s) now? We might get them by 2035, at this rate..

Maybe they can get Peter Hook to play bass for them, lmao..

Not the greatest news to read on my 19th anniversary with my partner. Simon has left the band before, but this is a major setback. Maybe Eden has shoes to fill now. He could still credit Simon on the album, assuming anything is actually recorded.

You're not the only one that got the news on their anniversary. Apparently yesterday was Robert's 33rd wedding anniversary.

Well, this is a fucking bummer. Simon, Mike Mills, and Jeff Ament are the three reasons I ever picked up a bass.

this is a fucking bummer. part of me felt something was up when he didn't play a couple of gigs on their last tour. but that could be unrelated to this.

Simon's the reason I started playing bass too.

I think this could be the end of the Cure. yes, he left for a total of 3 or 4 years since late 1979, but I just don't know if I see Robert getting another bass player.

Evidently his wife was sick that year, and later passed away which is why he needed to miss those two shows. Not sure why that wouldn't have affected Eden, too though. *edit - that was not Eden's mom*

I'm not too concerned about the future of this band, at least no more so than the last decade has hinted at. This band has basically been a novelty touring act for eons now with empty promise after empty promise of new albums, and I totally get it if that's Simon's breaking point.

Roger's aloof remark on Twitter implies he's not at all concerned, either. Chain of Flowers twitter suggests this isn't the first time there's been a (recent) blowup with Simon but maybe this is the first time it's gotten public on social media?

Its like Hook Vs Bernard in New Order all over again. Simon is a HUGE part of that band. As far as I am concerned, outside of RS, everyone else in that band is interchangeable....except Simon.....The Cure is basically now the RS/Reeves Gabrels band

You are exactly right. I was listening to Syro from Aphex Twin the other day and remember thinking how long it was between Drukqs and that release. And then I realized 13 years is the same amount of time since 4:13. I saw the Cure play around 2016 and they played new material and I think I let it get my hopes up that a new album was actually on the way for real this time. Well now that was even over 5 years ago. The band still sounds great though so that only makes it worse that they don't put out a new album. And now this Simon thing.
