I ask because I didn't think they were that important or that I hadn't been missing out on much, but after listening to High (Higher Mix) and the extended version of Elise recently, I was gobsmacked! The only one I've had for a long time and bothered with (albeit a vinyl rip) is the extended version of Just One Kiss as it's my all time favourite Cure song. On that note of JOK, I only just recently realised that the edit on Japanese Whispers has a different intro to the version on The Walk mini-EP. I haven't heard the latter and want to!

Apart from that, I feel like I've been missing out.

So yeah, is there a list anywhere of all the definitive missing things from Join The Dots, going from oldest to the most recent?

Cheers guys! Maybe @frankie teardrop you can help?
Erm, good question. I don't have any such list. This is why we need a "musical revolution" wiki, something I've been meaning to start up for a long time. (NOTE: best not to start with WIkia. Honestly.)

I'd add the extended mix of "Pictures of You" to the essentials list.

Someone out there put together an 11 CD compilation of every single thing outside of the albums from Head On The Door onward, as well as any side collaborations etc. that Robert's done. damn, not bad! better than i could have spooled up (tho i was working on this as per @Ryan 's request).

    things we're missing from here:

lost wishes & other wish outtakes (heart attack, slvvy, etc.)
    primary (12'' extended mix)
some of the worthwhile expanded edition stuff (hanging garden demo, winter, i want to be old, forever, ariel etc.)
live version of faith from charlotte sometimes 12''
live versions of 'killing an arab' and 'a forest' from hanging garden 10''/2x7''
    carnage visors

Thanks guys! I also read on CureFans that the versions of The Exploding Boy and World War on Join The Dots sound different to their original counterparts. So Robert's remixed them like he did with Entreat and how he sped up Bananafishbones on The Top reissue...

Pisses me off when things like that happen.

edit: Also not listed in that listing are the leaked Lost Flowers demos from Bloodflowers, Spilt Milk, Ching Chang Chong - which has the same music from Spilt Milk but different lyrics, A Boy I Never Knew, Strum, Please Come Home...

really? i hadn't heard that... i used to listen to the standing on a beach cassette with all the b-sides constantly, and i spin 'the exploding boy' off the 12" pretty regularly and i never noticed any real difference. i know the bad fade on 'fear of ghosts' was corrected, though...

wasn't the story on 'bananafishbones' that the original master had an error which slowed it down? they play it live at the remastered speed so maybe that really was a mistake.

Yeah, maybe, re Bananafishbones. But I got so used to the original that the sped up version sounded... wrong!

Not sure about World War and Exploding Boy, could just be crap as it has only been said by one person. I never listen to any original analogue stuff so I can't comment.

That was my understanding, for all of the above, aye.
@Shadaloo, that is a pretty amazing list, but it's a shame it includes stuff that *is* on *Join The Dots*, since I/we/you've already got them.

It's a pretty crazy list. I would also choose to file the RS solo and side project / guest vocal stuff separate from the Cure, but that's just me.

And was Lianne Hall really on the first iteration of Please? I don't remember her (I have the 7" downstairs, can check)

It's a strange compilation, to be certain. Lord knows why it skips the early years and includes 3/4 of Join The Dots. It's probably intended to only include official releases, hence the lack of demos.

I'm not the one who made it, anyway. I'd have gone about it a bit different to say the least :P

I recall hearing the same thing about Bananafishbones - original was wrong.

    - With "Ariel", it has only ever existed in demo form, hasn't it? The Kid Jensen session and the demo released on The Top reissue?

    - Is the version of "Pirate Ships" on the Disintegration remaster the same as the version that was online for years in low quality?

For the latter it's *supposed* to be, but I've never A/B'd it and since Robert has a revisionist approach to vocals on reissues it's possible he fiddled with it.

Can anyone provide me an mp3 of this condensed version, preferably not a YouTube rip?

yes and yes, as far as i recall. the reissue version of 'ariel' is a demo, though i grew accustomed to hearing the kid jensen version for ages... 'pirate ships' is definitely a stunner. and as for your other question, yes- the first few drum clicks on 'shake dog shake' are cut on the top remaster. no real idea why, likely a mistake...

I have a copy of the luther episode with the song in the outro credits ripped from iplayer via get_iplayer. As far as I am aware this makes non-transcoded copy of the compressed A/V from iplayer. Theoretically the broadcast on freesat will have been in a higher rate, so a rip from DVB would be better but I am unaware of one. The audio codec for my rip is

    Audio: aac (LC) (mp4a / 0x6134706D), 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp, 93 kb/s (default)

I can try and trim out the audio losslessly (as in: without any further transcoding) Tomorrow, if that's any good for you

    Thanks man.

Back to the prior topic of song titles not being consistent, a particular one I have a problem with is "Hey You!". In some places it has three exclamation marks like Hot Hot Hot!!!, but elsewhere like the 2006 remaster it just has the one.

So is it Hey You! and Hot Hot Hot!!!

or Hey You!!! and Hot Hot Hot!!! ?

and How Beautiful You Are... or How Beautiful You Are ?

and Love Song or Lovesong ?

and In Between Days or Inbetween Days ?

and The Love Cats or The Lovecats ?

and Lament or La Ment ?

and Bird Mad Girl or Birdmad Girl ?

    Grrrr.

Oh, and, A Few Hours After This... has three dots at the end on Join The Dots, but none printed on the actual In Between Days single.

Off To Sleep... from Lost Wishes has three dots printed on the cassette though.

And the ultimate biggest fucking one is this! "Inbetween Days (Without You)" - https://www.discogs.com/Cure-InBetwe...elease/1786849

then Robert goes and names a song Without You in 2008 as a b-side. *head explodes*

In the case of the last, supposedly the story behind the song is that Robert saw a body being lifted out of the waters of a river called La Ment (whose location I can find no reference to). But it appears as "Lament" on its very first appearance on the flexipop single. So....who knows? That one bugs me.

That makes sense, since the lyric goes "A man walked cold and blue into La Ment," naming the river. Maybe Bob just couldn't make up his mind whether he wanted people to read it as the river name or the actual word "Lament" like how you lament when someone dies.

ps, Check out the additional edits I just made to my last post. lol

Does anyone have the 4:13 Dream live performance in Rome? I have it but there are skips and errors in a few of the tracks.

And another question before I forget:

How did the (Mix 13) versions of The Only One, Freakshow, Sleep When I'm Dead and The Perfect Boy differ to the album mixes? They always sounded the same to me.

I always thought that as well. I will say the mix for the Only One music video always seemed cleaner to me than what appeared on the album.

What songs do you guys make correlations between?

An obvious one for me is Spilt Milk and This Is A Lie - the idea that we settle with one person in our lives and miss out on opportunities with other potential soul mates and such, and the depression that comes with that notion.

Also, Bare and Where The Birds Always Sing:

"But memory's not life, and it's not love"

    >

"But living on in others, in memories and dreams, is not enough, and it never is, you always want so much more than this"

The idea that the poetic idea of living on in memories is bullshit and we all want to believe in an afterlife (or an afterlove?)

    Siamese Twins:

"Girl at the window looks at me for an hour..."

    Watching Me Fall:

"The room is small, the room is bright
Her hair is black, the bed is white"

    This Morning:

"And then we're here in a room too clean and too bright
She stares at you for an hour, you stare into the light

For one last hour in the room, so mean and so white
I stare at her in this room as she stares into the night"

Seems to be a continous set of references between the three songs to a woman in a too-clean white room, staring for an hour, the subject matter of Watching me Fall is unquestionably that of prostitution, and I've heard it interpreted that Siamese Twins was specifically about losing one's virginity to a prostitute. If that's what happened the experience might have left quite a bad mark on Robert for life.

    also, in one hundred years:

"just a piece of new meat in a clean room"
