I just discovered this band. Sooo good. James Murphy makes me think of David Byrne shifted a few decades.

Man, you just discovered LCD? That's kind of a bummer seeing as how James Murphy retired the band last year. Regardless LCD is one of my all time favorites. I feel super fortunate that I got to see them once, five years ago opening up for Arcade Fire, in which Arcade Fire literally performed along with LCD the entire show. It was fucking magical.

I randomly came across All My Friends while watching videos on youtube, remembered I had heard the band's name before, and decided to check it out. And then it was like an avalanche of awesome just opened up. Not only is the music great, the videos are great. I'm still kinda reeling in a way. This is the kind of music I want to make.

It's a mixed feeling to discover a band that no longer produces music. On one hand, you can experience the entirety of their catalog at once without preset expectations and are insulated from the frustrations of fandom (e.g. waiting for the next release, dealing with a breakup). On the other hand, you potentially lose some of the context of what the music represented when it came out and you don't get the highs of fandom (e.g. new releases, live shows).

Apparently there will be a one-night only screening (July 18th) of Shut Up And Play The Hits, a documentary of their last performance. I have a conference in Austin then, but of course it's showing there, so I grabbed a ticket.

I've got tickets for the KC screening. It's going to be awesome. The theater is in the middle of the art school district so a lot of us are kind of expecting to turn it into a big ass sing along/party during the film. Going to be great.

Saw them three times on that farewell tour. One of the best live bands you'll ever see. I remember it raining heavily in Austin during "All My Friends" and it was one of those moments where it was just like an emotional nut punch. Saw them that October at ACL and crowdsurfed to "Yeah" and it was so fucking rad. I really miss these guys, loved all three albums and I'm sure I'll cry like a fucking baby during the film. I remember wiping away my tears at the webcast of it.

i was fortunate to have seen them twice, but the first show i went to at the showbox in seattle was a disaster. my fault. i got so drunk that i only remember half of it.

i was stone cold sober the next time i saw them with the gossip and arcade fire. it was fantastic.

i'm really excited for the *alleged* reunion. i really, REALLY hope it comes with some (more) new music.

I don't know how I feel about this. On the one hand, I'm excited, yet on the other hand, I feel bad. This whole thing make their "last" show feel less special, and I hate to imagine how some people who went there actually feel, people who really thought that it was the last show and that they were apart of something very significant. I just hope LCD Soundsystem doesn't become the modern day Rolling Stones with retirement tours.

Also, at least with the NIN "last" tour, Trent made it obvious that it was completely tongue in cheek. James made it feel authentic.

but in my naiveté i hadn’t seen one thing coming:
there are people who don’t hate us at all, in fact who feel very attached to the band, and have put a lot of themselves into their care of us, who feel betrayed by us coming back and playing. who had traveled for or tried to go to the MSG show, and who found it to be an important moment for them, which now to them feels cheapened. i just hadn’t considered that. i know—ridiculous on my part. i saw some comments online a few days ago from people who felt that way, and it blindsided me, and made me incredibly sad. i saw some other people replying with stuff like “if that’s what you cared about, and you don’t want them to play anymore, maybe you liked the band for pretty weird reasons”, and it made me think. the truth is, while i get what the replier is saying, i kind of side with the original complaint: if you cared a lot about our band, and you put a lot of yourself into that moment (or anything about us you chose), and you feel betrayed now, then i completely understand that. it’s your right to define what you love about a band, and it’s your right to decry their actions and words as you see fit, because it’s you, frankly, who have done much of the work to sustain that relationship, not the band. i was so clearly expecting the cynical cries of foul, that i hadn’t seen the heartfelt complaint coming. we’ve always talked about how we’d never betray anyone who cares about us, but here we are now. given the chance again to make new music with the people i care about, and who have given a big part of their lives to doing this weird thing together, and who wanted to do it again, i took it. and in doing so, i betrayed whoever feels betrayed by that action. i by no means think that everyone who liked our band feels bad right now. a lot of people who liked our band are very happy, and we’ve been pretty blown away by the almost overwhelmingly positive response. last night i sat with al and nancy in a weird italian bar and we talked about how fucking awesome it was that so many people were happy to have us back. but that doesn’t take away from those who feel hurt. to you i have to say: i’m seriously sorry. the only thing we can do now is get back into the studio and finish this record, and make it as fucking good as we can possibly make it. it needs to be better than anything we’ve done before, in my mind, because it won’t have the help of being the first time. and we have to play better than we’ve ever played, frankly. every show has to be better than the best show we’ve played before for anyone to even say “well, that was good. i mean, not as good as they used to be. but, you know. it was good.” we know all that. which is healthy for us, because it means we go back to war, like in the beginning. for us it was always war, but now it’s really with ourselves. maybe we have a chance to make it right.

living in nyc i got lucky but i can understand that feeling for international travelers. i can't help but be excited about new music from them especially when murphy is fired up about a new record.

Thank god. I never got to see them because I came around too late, but maybe I'll get the chance now. And I'll always take new music - This is Happening was my favorite one of the three.

I understand the viewpoint about feeling "cheated" after the last show or whatever, but the fact of the matter is that there were tons of people who didn't get to see them the first time around, and get that chance now. As long as the record and the shows don't blow, I say come back whenever you want.

you won't be disappointed. they're they only band imo that compares to nin in a live setting. the 3 set format of the last show was incredible. and if murphy is trying to top that last run of shows we're gonna be in for a treat.
