SOPHIE's new record is great. It is ecstatic and disquieting, sometimes it alternates between these affects, and sometimes it embodies them both at once. Her earlier work, I read as a compelling conceptual riff on the aughts-era pop music that shaped my primordial music consuming brain. By now though it feels like her work has matured into something immensely more personal and intimate, but using the same tools she developed earlier in her career. The stand-out track might be 'Immaterial,' which is maybe the most direct, if not simplest song on the record.

I've also been sort of casually working my way through Phillip Glass' work lately, the way his compositional voice emerges with relatively little going on in some of these pieces is kind of humbling. His score for Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, remains one of my favorites. The film itself is great also.

edit: since I see SOPHIE has already been shouted out in this space, I feel like should add something more. I will say that Lana Del Rabies' record from this year, Shadow World, is a cool noise album if you're into that.

Not long before Vegas and BW, I stumbled across Wardruna and Danheim (both referred to as dark nordic folk I believe) and I listened to that quite a bit (and will likely get back to it soon). Totally not like anything else I listen to but I really enjoyed the feeling/mood of it. And, yes I am a Vikings (history show) fan so maybe that had something to do with it. I also can't listen to NIN (with vocals) at work (too distracting because I stop and listen to it) but I'm good with instrumentals (Ghosts, Social Network, etc.) so Wardruna works for me for that purpose too (when there is singing it's in another language so I can't focus on it and it's not distracting).

    Example,

I've been on an Idles binge, appear to have a huge energy live from watching some shows online.
bought the vinyl and tickets to a gig in October.

Seems fitting to post after TR has been saying, in a few recent interviews, not too many artists these days are speaking out about the shit in the world.

I feel that these guys are a hugely important band on the rise, hailing from Bristol, UK.

A couple of people were saying some of Bad Witch reminded them of the Error EP, and I'm glad I checked it out. The vocals aren't always to my taste but the music is really well done.

Btw those guys have a new album "Unloved" coming out on July 27th. They've released their first single from it on their bandcamp and it's stupidly heavy and good.

"The Leon Suites" from David Bowie & Brian Eno is excellent. Fits right into the Bad Witch mood.

I advise you to read this overview of the story of its existence on reddit. It's very interesting.
