SOPHIE's new record is great. It is ecstatic and disquieting, sometimes it alternates between these affects, and sometimes it embodies them both at once. Her earlier work, I read as a compelling conceptual riff on the aughts-era pop music that shaped my primordial music consuming brain. By now though it feels like her work has matured into something immensely more personal and intimate, but using the same tools she developed earlier in her career. The stand-out track might be 'Immaterial,' which is maybe the most direct, if not simplest song on the record.
I've also been sort of casually working my way through Phillip Glass' work lately, the way his compositional voice emerges with relatively little going on in some of these pieces is kind of humbling. His score for Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, remains one of my favorites. The film itself is great also.
edit: since I see SOPHIE has already been shouted out in this space, I feel like should add something more. I will say that Lana Del Rabies' record from this year, Shadow World, is a cool noise album if you're into that.
