Ok, I'll reserve judgment until I actually hear it, because I do enjoy some experimental NIN, but some is lost on me...like The Lovers...but I always give every NIN song a chance, bc they very often grow on me...like This Isn't the Place.

Yeah, sorry guys. You're pretty much going to have to download a third-party zip tool. The built-in Windows File Explorer and macOS Archive Utility can't handle ZIP AES-encryption. Try 7-zip on Windows and Keka on Mac.

Agreed. IMO it's unbelievably weird if you're not into this kind of music (like myself) and feels almost alien in comparison to any other NIN song. It's practically missing all of the things I like about Trent's music (minus the "remove the pain and push it back in"-part, which rocks).

Which is funny because to me The Lovers doesn't sound experimental at all. It's a pretty straight-forward NIN song if you ask me (love it, btw).

Wow, it just hit me. This song would have some absolutely insane LSD visuals live.

Amazing. Listened back-to-back 5 times. I can see why people don't like it, but I pretty much instantly love it.

It reminded me not only of the Bowie from "Blackstar", but also the Bowie from "Outside" (I'm Deranged comes to mind), loved how weird it is!

@ 1:42 mark... all I feel is dread, despair, hopelessness, fear... as if at that time we finally realize our fate.

I'm a big "Matrix" fan, in the 3rd movie, when the machines break into the roof of Zion for the first time, @1:42 would have been perfect for that scene!

    Thanks Trent!

    More pointless observations:
    - that middle part is the most The Fragile-sounding thing since The Fragile
    - I'm slightly worried about the fact that the other track (from the teaser) sounds a lot similar to this one

You think it does? I don't know, I felt it has more of a noisy, lo-fi harsh beat to it.

Hmm... reminding me a lot of Came Back Haunted, though I think it's just that bassy synth/repetitive shallow drumbeat that's there the whole time. I'm personally kind of underwhelmed, and I'm not getting much emotion out of it, but I'm hoping it'll grow on me in ways Came Back Haunted never did. Definitely even more excited to hear the rest of the album now though, even if I don't end up liking it much!

Those vocals are definitely something else though -- I really don't think I've ever heard his voice waver like that. Between this and what he did on "This Isn't The Place" and "A Minute To Breathe", I really like how he's been pushing his voice in new ways.

So far without listening, my big takeaway is that people dont like the lovers. To each their own, I'm not really into the idea of you. Too repetitive until the "hey, can you hear part". Although I like it better, I feel the same with shoes gone away....that bass line over and over. I like when there are changes from verse to chorus with regards to instrumentation.

Edit: shoes again fucking auto correct. Left for posterity.

Damn this sounds really inspired! I immediately thought of Blackstar/Outside comparison and I think Bowie would be proud. Also reminds me of Lost Highway and Perfect Drug. I hope the entire record matches the quality of this track.

Really wild to see all these comparisons / 'reminds-me-of's.

The Fragile, Bowie, The Lovers, the un-Trent-like vocals of Minute to Breathe. As an aside, based on the recent interviews Atticus must really be pushing Trent outside of his comfort zone.

Special thanks to @eversonpoe for helping me get to hear this. I can see why it’s polarizing but I enjoyed it. I think it definitely kicks in full force in the second half.

“Reminds me of” Blackstar and Earthling Bowie mixed with Radiohead’s “The National Anthem.”

    Pretty badass.

    This track, I swear...

Pretty ballsy to have a drum and bass track as a single.
