Imagine if a double A-side single dropped with a studio recorded version of Please Come Home b/w a studio version of ICNBTS.

As a preview for the taste of the new album.

I’d cry. (the versions below are the original demo that leaked, and the Curætion live version edited to sound like studio).

Went on a long drive today with my partner and listened to The Head On The Door (2 CD version) and Mixed Up.

Man, Sinking is such an amazing closing song and song in general. The sadness of that track could fit on Bloodflowers. Also, listening to the bonus disc of demos all the way through is a real trip.

Mixed Up is a great driving album. Very happy.

Anyone noticed something RS tends to do lyrically with the whole “man” thing? “I turn into the melting man,” “the drowning man,” “trembling hands of the trembling man,” and there are about five or so others I’ve heard recently that I can’t immediately think of. I love that type of lyric, it paints a very vivid mental image.

Also, for some reason Cure music and RS in general always give me this... childish and nostalgic/warm safe/vibe, especially in songs that use those really sweet xylophone tones. Like you feel back at home, mentally back to a familiar place, it’s hard to explain and obviously doesn’t pertain to all songs and albums.

    Randomly thinking here.

I get it. I've always felt that way, too. I think it's because Robert is very much in touch with his inner child, and that comes forth in some of the music and certainly in the visual aesthetic of the band. Robert is undeniably playful and cuddly, and so at times there's that warmth that's almost like what you would feel watching a children's show that you grew up with or something.

listening to the Cure makes me feel like a child because my parents have been listening to them since literally my birth. I get what you mean.

Mixed Up was always in the car when it came out, indeed, the perfect driving album.

Seriously, when will Apple Music fix this?

    https://ibb.co/nw8v16r

Why that particular song? Is there a sample in it or something?

It's tiresome & frustrating. Perhaps the seemingly inevitable Pornography calendar will be interesting.

    faroutmagazine.co.uk/the-cure-robert-smith-simon-gallup-fight-bar-bill/

“During Pornography, the band was falling apart, because of the drinking and drugs. I was pretty seriously strung out a lot of the time,” Robert Smith later confessed to Rolling Stone. “I know for a fact that we recorded some of the songs in the toilets to get a really horrible feeling because the toilets were dirty and grim. Simon doesn’t remember any of that, but I have a photo of me sitting on a toilet, in my clothes, trying to patch up of some of the lyrics. It’s a tragic photo.”

Whilst Tolhurst had a relaxing drink, it was anything but calm when Smith and Gallup found themselves in a vitriolic argument over an unpaid bar tab. It would put that era of The Cure to the sword, all for a few drinks. What started as a war of words over the bill ended with a full-blown fistfight between the two men. “I was about to leave when some guy came up and told me I hadn’t paid for my drinks,” remembered Gallup in Ten Imaginary Years, “He thought I was Robert. I was knackered but the bloke took me up to the bar and Robert appeared to see what was going on. I hit him, he responded and we had a fight.”

One can only hope there will be some previously unseen photos of events like the above lmao

It’s been a long time since I checked: have the lyrics/words from “Three” ever been worked out apart from “Scream...”?

edit: and on the album version of Secrets, what does it say? Sounds like “keep quiet” to me.

Answering myself here. Still curious about the beginning of Secrets, though.

    Three:

Enough of that "stand up straight"
    What nonsense
"No," I said, my face close to the ground, "I'll stay as I am."
"You really can annoy a person, I must say. Such a waste of time! Come on, put an end to it."

"The way you shout! In the quiet of the night!" I said
"Just as you like," he added

But wheeling suddenly around, he looked at me - I hadn't quite finished yet - and said: "What's this? You're all crooked! What on earth are you up to?"

"Quite right. You're very observant," said I, my head on the seam of his trousers, which was why I couldn't look up properly
I won't scream, I'll just stare at him as long as my eyes can stand it

    "Well?" he said
    "Well?" he said
    "Well?" he said

haha, so it is actually “keep quiet” in Secrets. Actually, that makes it more interesting, because the lyrics to that song are so awesome but so unfortunately subdued in the studio version... but maybe that’s intentional? He says “keep quiet” then literally sings the song quietly. Live performances actually have Robert singing it really loud and clearly, which I adore.

I’ve been on a huge Seventeen Seconds kick lately. What a huge jump in sound and style, really glad RS did that. It’s got that such a... rainy day vibe to it. Hard to explain. Even a nostalgic feel to it and thoughts of innocence, and familiar times and places.

I could be wrong but I’ve always felt 17S was massively influenced by joy division. I do love it too.

Does it slightly irritate anyone that both the “fan trilogy” (17S/Faith/Porno) and RS’s trilogy (Porno/Dis/BF) all end with their respective title tracks, apart from Disintegration, with it appearing as track 10?

Hell, even Three Imaginary Boys and The Top end with their title tracks!

Then you have the slightly more obscure ones...

Wish - I guess this one comes in the form of To Wish Impossible Things (“And all I wish is gone away”)
The Head On The Door - Title taken from a line in Close To Me
KMKMKM - Title taken from a line in The Kiss

And then WMS, The Cure and 4:13 Dream don’t have anything referencing a title track all. That’s kind of annoying too.

Kind of like when Tool decided on 10,000 Days and broke the one word album title pattern.

    For the ones that count:

Three Imaginary Boys - ends with Three Imaginary Boys
Seventeen Seconds - ends with Seventeen Seconds
    Faith - ends with Faith
    Pornography - ends with Pornography
The Top - ends with The Top
    Disintegration - ends with Untitled
    Bloodflowers - ends with Bloodflowers

I dunno, I like uniformity lol.

Maybe I'm not as big a fan as I thought I was, but what does this mean? Are those albums generally the fans' favorites vs Smith's personal favorites?

RS thinks Pornography/Disintegration/Bloodflowers form an unofficial trilogy inasmuch as they share similar themes and feelings.

Fans tend to differ and think that Seventeen Seconds/Faith/Pornography are more similar in tone/feel and would love a live concert done in the same 2002/2003 Trilogy style with those three records instead.

For me, disintegration kind of ends at disintegration. I’ve never really got into homesick or untitled.

You're kinda right, as the original vinyl record didn't even have Homesick (or Last Dance) on it. But it did still end with Untitled. Disintegration the song is kind of heavy and exhilarating; I do like how Untitled is kind of wistful, kind of like a gentle epilogue to an otherwise very dense record. But I can see how it gives a vibe of bonus track more than proper album closer.

17 Sec/Faith/Porn is an absolute real trilogy in that there's a growing progression of mood from bleak to gloomy to vitriolic despair almost. The white/grey/black color scheme of the albums is perfect. It's Robert's music so he can obviously have his opinion, but other than the hidden "Cold" line in Last Dance, I don't really see what Pornography and Disintegration have to do at all with one another. Yeah, Disintegration is gloompop, but it's rich and majestic.

Robert Smith and fans are both right. Both of those trilogies work for different reasons, they're both great. But trilogies are for casual fans. I like to listen to the quintology!

Seventeen Seconds - Faith - Pornography - Disintegration - Bloodflowers

I feel like Wish could be a part of it as well if you swap out the happy poppy songs for Lost Wishes tracks.
