Atticus Ross Master Class at LAFF 2014

While we've been discussing Atticus Ross's Master Class at LAFF 2014 in the Random score thoughts thread, I think that it deserves a thread of its own. Here's the description from the website:
An evening with Oscar winning composer and electronic musician Atticus Ross who will debut a stylized electronic soundscape with Claudia Sarne, Leopold Ross and Kirk Hellie. He'll also talk about moving into film composing and discuss his work scoring the films of David Fincher with long-time collaborator Trent Reznor, including the Oscar winning The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the forthcoming Gone Girl, as well as other adventures in making music for film with directors such as Michael Mann and the Hughes Brothers.

Moderated by Elvis Mitchell, Curator, Film Independent at LACMA
I'm especially excited now that the blurb has been updated to include the full list of performers. I never thought that I'd get to see the members of 12 Rounds live. I've enjoyed their film scores during the last few years.

Audio/video/photos/sending me to the show in a wooden crate would all be greatly appreciated. It looks like it's gonne be great, not just for the music but the talk looks good.

I've convinced like 5 people to go so far, so we could end up with a multicam edit of it all :P

I went the step of asking for a late media credential from the festival with the band's endorsement. I can't guarantee that will get us photos, but I have reached out to the appropriate channels to try. I'd also pitch in to any crowdfunding effort to get sheepdean to the event.

Hah, very kind of ya but we're talking $1300 for just a flight :P. I'll live with a recording and the hope that they'll do something this side of the pond soon

Just a quick update. While I've secured a media credential for the Master Class, I've been denied the ability to take photos during the event. The LAFilmFest folks have their own house photographer which is the only person permitted to take photos. That makes a lot of sense, it being primarily a film festival and folks not wanting people to take photos or video of screenings. I will have access to their photos and will share some with my article for 12Rounds.net, but won't be taking any on my own. In a way, that's a good thing because it means I can enjoy the show with my eyes instead of through a viewfinder.

If you accidentally left a dictophone or something turned on, wouldn't be terrible of course

I got there early since I wasn't sure what the area would be like due to the Kings game. The doors don't open til 7pm, so I'm wandering around the LA Live complex until then. Also, parking seems to be rather scarce due to the Kings game. I just hope it ends before the masterclass.

I saw way too many cops tonight while waiting for the talk start... they had blanketed the LA Live complex in preparation for the LA Kings game, though I'd rather have lots of cops than riots. The talk started 15 minutes late because people were having trouble finding parking due to the aforementioned hockey game. The theater seated 200 people and it wasn't a full house. Also, a decent portion of the audience were either friends, family, and/or collaborators of Atticus Ross.

The first 30 minutes of the talk was a live performance. It was nice to hear some of the various film scores (Chasing Shadows from Broken City and Panorama from the Book of Eli) live, as well as Chicane. The rest of the talk was a conversation between Elvis Mitchell and Atticus Ross; Elvis Mitchell was a knowledgeable interviewer who had done his homework prior to the talk.

One common theme of the talk was that Atticus enjoyed making music with collaborators, both in writing music and scoring for film. He talked about how because he was involved early in the film process, the music that he had written changed the film, with the examples being Panorama and Hand Covers Bruise. He also reiterated his dislike for temp music and that he ignores it when scoring. This led to a discussion about working for Michael Mann (I have no idea what future film this is... I checked imdb and the only upcoming project for him is Cyber and someone else is listed for the score) and how he'd had to change some of the music to be closer to the temp music.

They then showed the opening of the movie Heat, as an example of how musical texture can set the mood. The LA Metro was also worked into the soundtrack, which was very similar to the use of the floor cleaner in TGWTDT. They later showed that clip from TGWTDT while referencing how sound design and film scoring intersect.

They also showed the opening of the Social Network and then Atticus talked a little about the composition of Hand Covers Bruise. The background drone is a cello fed through a synth so that they could change the texture. The piano was added right at the end before they turned the music in. He made a crack about writing a few successful pop songs.

I really enjoyed the performance and the talk, though I could have done without the Kings game and the traffic afterwards.

Funny aside: I bought the Error EP around a decade ago in a used record shop in Los Angeles about a week before it was released.

My wife and I listen to it every time we drive into LA. It is like our Los Angeles theme music.

It was the only Atticus related item I had that I could have signed.

When I handed it to him he commented that a) "You must be one of the ten people who bought this." and b) "You should really get this signed by the rest of the band, they are all here."

He got Brett Gurewitz's attention in the crowd and had him sign it. Brett's comment without talking to Atticus was "You must be one of the ten people who bought this."

Later in the green room, Brett and Gina told Leopold Ross of the guy downstairs with an Error EP he needed to sign. I said that I was there, handed Leo the EP to him making the comment "I love this record but you must have been one of the ten people to buy it."

All of you own this, right? If not, here are some helpful links:

Hey, so I sat front and center and recording the entire event.

I just sent the file to @RITCNIN .

    It should be up soon.

12Rounds.net posted a review of it, for those of us too impatient for audio http://www.12rounds.net/2014/06/401/

Also, that's the second time I think Michael Mann has come up in something, now my interest is piqued - Cyber already has a composer after all.

And no mention of Gennadiy, I wonder how badly delayed they were by the Ukraine crisis...

I can't post the audio right away. It will be posted on the front of RITC when I can. My audio board on my iMac was a faulty part when replaced. So I have to wait until Tuesday to get it back. Thanks for taping it @Toadflax .

I was in attendance. It was one of THE most inspiring musical performances I've ever seen. The interview was awesome too. Fun to see Rosamund Pike, Brooke Langton, and Allen Hughes in the audience too. What a night. Best $20 I've spent in many many years!

Maybe more people would have bought it if Epitaph hadn't given so many goddamn copies away. They reached out to me about doing a contest, which I did end up doing, and they sent me something like twenty fucking CDs. I did not have much in the way of disposable income, so I mailed five or ten of them out, and ended up giving the rest away to local friends. They also sent me about 30 Epitaph Records stickers.

I'm not big on autographs unless I'm there getting them (and I rarely ask) but a signed Error EP pretty fucking badass. I wish they'd gone on to make a full length, I still love that little EP.

Don't forget the post-EP track that, again, Epitaph chose to not advertise because that would be silly http://fuckyeahatticusross.tumblr.co...release-so-far

But most people I know who own it only have it digitally, which is a real shame because the 3" inside 5" design of the CD is really gorgeous imo, it's so rare for CD art to be really well done

That first "new song" is quite a beast, thanks for the link and the efforts of the recorder.

I missed the Rush Limbaugh sample during the live performance. This recording is excellent.
Edit: Cellphone recording of the Q&A portion of the evening. The interviewer's mike wasn't on at the beginning. I didn't post this earlier because the music portion was rather atrocious; it's been cut from the beginning.

Darn it. I was traveling up in Canada over the past 8 days (off the grid) and missed that download. Was super excited to hear it. Anyone out there care to repost? Or know somewhere else I could download it? Thanks!

I'm gonna be the jerk that says 'Untitled 2' is actually 'Missing Pieces' from the Broken City soundtrack. Just wanted to throw that out there for other OCD tagging freaks like myself
