PLEASE can we cancel Mumford & Sons now. I’ve got some cognitive dissonance from looking at this guys twitter timeline, plays the banjo for the most beige innocuous band but his timeline is full of tweets calling for radical action on China and so forth, very bizarre

one of the therapists here has been putting on various Vitamin String Quartet albums in her groups, and yesterday she had on a 90s alternative album. most of the tributes were fine, and fun, and nostalgic...but then "mmmbop" came on and we were all just cracking up at our memories of that terrible fucking song hahaha

^^ I made a 90's playlist that starts with 'MMMbop', followed by Third Eye Blind's 'Semi-Charmed Life', followed by Spin Doctors 'Two Princes'. Mostly because it's hilarious how much they all sound alike.

It started as a joke, but it's become somewhat of a staple in our house..

I HATE the 2 Princes song, I worked in a shop which played top 40 radio all the time in 1993 and this was always played. I always hold particular hatred in my heart for things which I feel were over played or I was forced to listen to even though there is worse music out there. I checked out the video for Mmmbop and though it’s terrible, they were so young, I looked them up and the eldest was only 16 in this video. I just can’t hate teens that much, they don’t know any better

    Hanson led to Tinted Windows.

Tinted Windows were an American rock supergroup formed by guitarist James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins, singer Taylor Hanson of Hanson, Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne and Ivy, and Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick. The band issued one album in 2009, and performed live in 2009 and 2010. Josh Lattanzi also often performed with the band as the second guitarist.
All songs written by Adam Schlesinger.

You'd know the Stacy's Mom song. I'm sure they had other semi-popular songs, but that one was seemingly everywhere.

This Five Finger Death Punch drummer guy nixed all the music he released earlier to reboot his band, then proceeds to release shit that's probably worse:

so I started working on this "concept album" where I'm going to make "ironic" covers of the worst songs of all time.

Starting with this one. Gonna make some sad piano ballad version of this thing.
Just torture music. Some moaning about "nobody can find out that I've been fucking Sally, and she's a dirty bitch but her daddy's rich..."

They're literally associated with Dr. Luke ffs.

The music does really suck too.

Being corporate or an "industry plant" doesn't really bother me (I love The Monkees), but their music is fucking terrible.

Same here, it's not necessarily a bad thing, even with emo stuff. Take Paramore as an example of being corporate not having to mean soulless. Hayley signed a development deal at 13, got sick of the pop stuff because she was always more into rock (like, in interviews with Paramore she'd frequently shout out more underground bands she was into) and convinced her handlers to let her and the band she'd formed do the whole rock thing. It was always the stuff she wanted to do, and she used her connections to allow her band to do it. Say what you want about them, but I don't doubt their authenticity at all. (and also, the music was WAYYY better imo)

On the other hand, Tramp Stamps just reek of cynicism. Like, only one had the alt/e-girl look prior to November 2020, and they didn't even know the bands they claim to be inspired by. Also, yes, the music is fucking terrible.
