My only kinda-qualm about it. Mostly that it made me think of NSPN at all. All that aside, the chorus hits fucking hard.

I like this track more than anything on the first EP, it just has this natural flow about it versus any of those. Vocals especially. Lots of shit going on that feels right, not that feeling of "just because I can" I get from NIN more lately. Digging the production a lot. All in all a nicely composed li'l banger. Sends my compass to a lot of familiar NIN feelings I appreciate. Pleasantly surprised.

    "LESS THAN":

I was bleep-bloop'ing along and then the chorus came in like

    Love it.

This was seriously the first thing I thought too, although I think it's way better than that song.

Anyone else immediately think of The Presence when they saw that arm on float by a couple times on the screen?

The first 30 seconds or so, no doubt, but the vibe changes quickly.

Looking forward to listening with my nice headphones tonight at home!

Oh awesome. I've always wanted NIN to let loose and go full-on synthpop for awhile now, and this fits the bill perfectly. I love that we've got a NIN that's putting out NTAE and this alongside each other. I wonder if the rest of this upcoming EP is going to be similarly poppy.

Looking forward regardless! Now to prevent myself from burning out on this track before the full EP arrives...

The (real, but not really) game in the video is actually an urban legend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polybius_(video_game)

And I'm pretty sure the hand reaching out of the screen is a tribute to the cock gun in Videodrome.

    Focus?
    We didn't even notice
    We awake in a place
    We can barely recognize, yeah
    Hypnosis

And you can justify it all
Your back was up against the wall again

    Shut up, silence
    Add a little violence
    And offend and pretend
And defend and demand my compliance

    And you can always justify
The missile trails across the sky again

So what are you waiting for?
You got what you asked for
Did it fix what was wrong with you?
    Are you less than?
Go and look what you gone done
    Come and welcome oblivion
Did it fix what was wrong inside?
    Are you less than?

    Needful
    Oh, too many fucking people
You have to take care of yourself
You know I've got my hands full

    And you can always justify
The missile trails across the sky again

So what are you waiting for?
You got what you asked for
Did it fix what was wrong inside?
    Are you less than?
And look what you gone done
    Welcome oblivion

    Are you less than?

So what are you waiting for?
You got what you asked for
Did it fix what was wrong inside?
Are you less than? (Are you less than? Less than?)
And look what you gone done
    Well, welcome oblivion
Did it fix what was wrong inside?
    Are you less than?

I was talking more about the level of complexity/creativity rather than "vibe". It's super repetitive, and the while it's layered, the dynamics feel really predictable. It also feels over-produced and there isn't anything really novel about the song.

I appear to be in the minority though, so I will shut up for now.

Actually Polybius is a real game now released on PlayStation 4 and PSVR.

    Interesting:

"Polybius is thought to take its name from that of the Greek historian Polybius, who was known for his assertion that historians should never report what they cannot verify through interviews with witnesses."

Thanks for saving me the time! Heads up that according to the video the first line is "Focus?" as a question.

Holy moly - I like every single thing about this song!

It's a pretty song! With structure and progression, non-clingy lyrics, a real thickness to the sound!

    Wow, I really love it!

Here's a great mini-documentary about Polybius that also completely debunks it. One of my favorite urban legeds/conspiracy theories.

seriously, though, i love this song. wish he hadn't rhymed "for" with "for" but it's trent and the rest of the lyrics are interesting. i love the reference to welcome oblivion, and i'll probably listen to it on repeat in my car while i'm running errands today.

The album art has a location in the file tag, (34.1669, -118.2899). Is this just the studio where the image was made, or maybe something is hidden there for us to find? I'm a whole continent away at the moment. I can't go check it out...

HOLY SHITTTT, this NIN timing!!!! I was having the shittiest goddamn fucking week in a very, very long time.... Just packed out my stuff at work, being all moody and shit, and the moment I start my laptop a notification pops up: "NINE INCH NAILS - LESS THAN". Amazing timing, thanks Trent! Dope song, THTF vibe, and i dont give a fuck if this has been done before; this is one of my favorite style of nin to just listen and dance to, not everything has to be some coded message.

I've been listening to a lot of early 80s pop and new wave and watching that short film Kung Fury and it feels like this track perfectly captures the headspace I've been in the last few weeks.

Well, the description for the EP is: "ADD VIOLENCE finds Nine Inch Nails becoming more accessible and impenetrable at the same time. The sonic palette expands significantly from Not The Actual Events,", so you may be correct, he might've picked this song because it is fairly straight forward and "accessible".

I'm at work, so I'm listening on some shitty headset, so I'm going to hold judgement until I get home
