    Post Top 25 Favorite Bands

I've been wanting to compile my own list and i thought it would be fun to do it here.

Bands, of course, includes solo artists, rappers and rap groups, and electronic artists and DJs.

I have to go to the grocery store so i will do mine later.

Hopefully we can turn each on to some new music!

I tried... I can't do it. My opinion changes so fast, by the time I've written out 25 names I've already scratched about 5 of them off and replaced them.

Come on @Jinsai , you can do it! NIN...Boards of Canada...Squarepusher, my band...

i can't wait to do mine but i gotta hit the sack. I'm gonna love this thread. Part of the reason i made it is because i want to explore some of you guys favorites. I'm kinda stagnant in the new music department.

Goodnite ever'body. I'll do mine after church tomorrow.
@Vertigo , what is "god is an astronaut" all about?

alright, I'll put together a quick top 25.
    Order insignificant.

    1. Aphex Twin
    2. Coil
    3. Billie Holiday
    4. Venetian Snares
    5. Radiohead
    6. Pink Floyd
    7. The Beatles
    8. Ornette Coleman
    9. Mozart
    10. Autechre
    11. Bob Dylan
    12. Radiohead
    13. Beethoven
    14. Tom Waits
    15. Einsturzende Neubauten
    16. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
    17. Nine Inch Nails
    18. Dmitri Shostakovich
    19. Brian Eno
    20. Unwound
    21. David Bowie
    22. The Velvet Underground
    23. Godspeed You Black Emperor
    24. Depeche Mode
    25. Chopin

This is right now... Miles Davis would be in here, so would Stars of the Lid, so would J. Dilla, so would The Afghan Whigs.... etc etc etc etc, and somebody would get bumped. Right now I feel like listening to either Sparklehorse or Dead Can Dance more than any of the musicians I just named though, and so much of this is "this artist impacted me so heavily when I was growing up that I cannot not include them" sort of thing (so it's ridiculous that I didn't include Nirvana, so...)

edit: Just realized that I didn't include Joy Division. Goddamn it... And since lately I've been marathoning Jesus and Mary Chain, they should be there too... and on that note, why the fuck didn't I put My Bloody Valentine on there. I'm going to walk away and let it alone.

Great list, lots of variety, far more than mine. Reminds me that I have to edit my list and include The Jesus and Mary Chain. I saw them 2x in Boston a few years ago--great shows.

Jesus and Mary Chain are amazing. Honey's Dead has been my constant jam lately. I think everyone around me is sick of hearing it by now.

Instrumental rock, focusing on melodic or thrashy guitars and drums, underscored by spacey synths.

No particular order (apart from 1 and 2):

    1. Slowdive
    2. Swans
    Depeche Mode
    Underworld
    New Order
    The Church
    Sonic Youth
    The Jesus and Mary Chain
    Primal Scream
    The Cure
    Cocteau Twins
    R.E.M.
    For Against
    Unwound
    My Bloody Valentine
    Bark Psychosis
    Cranes
    Bjork
    Aphex Twin
    Throbbing Gristle
    Autechre
    The Chemical Brothers
    Orbital
    Spiritualized
    Nine Inch Nails

I deferred to nostalgia/longevity of enjoyment for this list. My top 25 at this very moment would look pretty different, but changes constantly. For example, I've very recently become enthralled by and obsessed with the late Jason Molina's body of work (esp. as Songs: Ohia) and was tempted to put him in my list, but it was hard to justify kicking off a band I've loved for years to make the space.

Pretty much in order, from off the top of me head, especially the first 10 or so.

I left out drum and bass, which i am REALLY into, but most drum and bass albums are dj mixes and don't really count as "bands" to me. That being said, my favorites are Dara, AK1200, Dieselboy, Evol Intent
@Vertigo , i REALLY like that GIAA track! what album should i start with?

Edit: holy shit, Idk how I managed to leave out both Type O Negative and Outkast.

    lycia
    death in june
    r.e.m.

    kate bush

a few that kill me to leave out, but i think this is pretty accurate... there's a few albums that are all time favorites (simple minds' new gold dream & empires and dance, red house painters' down colorful hill, ride's nowhere, jesus & mary chain's darklands, nico's desertshore, the orb's live 93, the klf's white room, massive attack's mezzanine, suede's debut, u2's boy/the unforgettable fire etc. etc. etc.) that should propel those artists into the top 25, but i'm aiming for bands that have a hugely consistent body of work vs a sole album i love.

Let me take a shot at this but I'm not going to include NIN since this is a NIN forum and I think a lot of us here will put NIN as our favorite band so this is a list 25 of my favorite bands/artists... that isn't NIN.

    1. Radiohead
    2. David Bowie
    3. My Bloody Valentine
    4. Pink Floyd
    5. Joy Division/New Order
    6. Queens of the Stone Age
