yeah, i mean angel dust and album of the year are my two favorites, and they're pretty drastically different in style. so i could take or leave jim as a guitar player. but as a person? he's a macho a-hole and that always bugged me.Originally Posted by perceptionnexus

I don't know, I feel like Angel Dust was when the band was at it's darkest specifically with Mike Patton. The vocals in that era were Bungle-level darkness especially on the live shows, which was a complete 180 from the upbeat tone of The Real Thing.

I liked it. Fast, riffy, punky, heavy, Patton being Patton ("i went to pee and it was red") was a lyric I remember. Looking forward to the rest of it.

I do not like the direction their music took once they brought in Patton as a replacement singer. It's gotten too silly and spastic for me compared to the heavier earlier track(s) I heard with the original guy. Oh well.

It's nothing groundbreaking but it's not bad.
Album is short as hell though, of the 10 songs they're all under 3 minutes except songs 9 and 10.

It's pretty decent. Very dense & compact. Plus a fun Bela Lugosi cover.

i LOVE it. the bela lugosi's dead cover and the closing track are my two highlights, but the whole thing is great. i'm curious as to whether the version of the album with gabe on vocals had the same lyrics (meaning he wrote the ones patton ended up singing) or different ones (meaning patton wrote his own lyrics to go with the songs and ignored the ones gabe originally wrote).
anyway, it's a lot of fun, the packaging is awesome (all of the lyrics are printed in glow in the dark inside the gatefold), and i will be listening to it repeatedly for a while.

i mean, that's the nature of a project with justin pearson. patton's definitely not the cause of that energy, but he certainly feeds off of it. but i love that, so i don't think our opinions line up on it.

I personally loved it. Definitely among my favorite albums that have come out this year. I was kinda hoping for it to be a little more experimental like my favorite Patton album, Irony Is A Dead Scene, but I loved it from beginning to end. I wish it was longer, though.

Damn I need to find a couple of hours so I can go buy the CD: that song "Shillelagh" totally gave me a "Digging the Grave"/"Another Body Murdered" vibe.

I gave California a listen for the first time a few days ago, and it's bonkers, but in the best way possible. It's such an awesome record! I've been a fan of FNM for ages, but I've only just recently started to check out some of Mike's other projects.

I like all the Bungle albums, but "California" is something else..

None of Them Knew They Were Robots and Ars Moriendi are fantastically wacky songs. Sweet Charity is one of the best Patton songs ever too, I think. I really like how the album is melodic, cacophonous, strange and catchy all at once.
