    Tour Rarities Game

So you got lucky this tour and caught some rare live NIN performances. Here's your chance to see just how lucky you are. In order to play (and even win) you do not need to be an old fan, or have seen the most shows. In fact, the highest scores may come from a combination of only a few shows in the last couple of months, especially with the newest NIN material. Your score has nothing to do with being a "better fan" or a more "hardcore" fan; luck and geography (and a little bit of math) are literally all it takes.

HOW TO PLAY: Go to Setlist.fm => Nine Inch Nails => Artist Statistics => Tour Statistics => Songs played total (https://www.setlist.fm/stats/nine-in...-1bd6a5bc.html). I'm not suggesting that Setlist.fm is perfect, but we need a baseline and we'll just have to disregard discrepancies in order to make this work smoothly.

RULES/SCORING: As of tonight, there are 167 individual songs listed; the seven rarest -- only played once -- are each ranked 160th. If you saw any of these songs live, give yourself 160 points for each show you were at. The thirteen next rarest songs -- only played twice -- are each ranked 147th. If you saw any of these songs live, give yourself 147 points for each show you were at. And so on. (If you saw multiple shows with the same, rare track, count each of them separately.)

If you're unfamiliar with Setlist.fm, in order to see the show(s) where these songs were played, all you have to do is click on the song title. Start at the bottom, and scroll up until you find the first 10 songs that you witnessed. A perfect score (i.e., if you are Trent Reznor) would be (7 x 160) + (3 x 147), or 1561.

Total up your points for the TEN RAREST SONGS you experienced, and post your results here.

For example, I scored 1349 points. I got lucky by attending both Aragon shows in '09 and all three this year. I also hit the Tension opener in St Paul, and happened into a random LITS show with a rare Ghosts track. Here is my scoring:

1 147 pts 32 Ghosts IV Mid-America Center, Council Bluffs IA
2 147 A Strange Kind of Love* Aragon Ballroom '09
3 147 Kick in the Eye* Aragon Ballroom '09
    4 140 Atmosphere* Aragon Ballroom '09
    5 134 Subterraneans* Aragon Ballroom '18
    6 134 AATCHB Aragon Ballroom '18
7 131 I Would for You XCel Energy Center
    8 124 Final Solution* Aragon Ballroom '09
9 124 Banged and Blown Through* Aragon Ballroom '09
    10 121 LITS Aragon Ballroom '09

One variation to level the playing field a bit would be to exclude covers(*), in which case scores would obviously tend to be a lot lower (mine dropped to 1186):

    5 111 17 Ghosts II Mid-America Center
    6 111 17 Ghosts II Target Center
7 111 Satellite XCel Energy Center
    8 109 Over and Out Aragon '18
    9 107 This Isn't the Place Aragon '18
    10 104 The Perfect Drug Aragon '18

I would love for people to give it a go, and I hope to see what kind of numbers we can get!

Just the ten most-rare songs I've seen, right? In that case I scored 1240:

1 x 127 for "6 Ghosts I" in Toronto, 2008 (I could have SWORN to you that we heard most of "Corona Radiata" at this show too, but whatever, it's not on the list)
1 x 121 for "Lights in the Sky" at Virgin Festival '09
1 x 121 for "Meet Your Master" in Ottawa '08
    1 x 119 for "28 Ghosts IV", also in Ottawa '08
    1 x 114 for "I Can't Give Everything Away" in NYC '18
2 x 111 for "17 Ghosts II" both in Ottawa and Grand Rapids '08 (ooh, double-show multiplier score!)
    1 x 107 for "21 Ghosts III" in Grand Rapids '08
1 x 104 for "The Perfect Drug" in Brooklyn '18
1 x 104 for "Various Methods of Escape" in Toronto '13
1 x 101 for "Just Like You Imagined" in Toronto '00

Did I do that right? Or does "Just Like You Imagined" not count because "17 Ghosts II" takes up two slots? It's still an awesome tally either way. If covers don't count, I also got "Burning Bright" at that NYC '18 show for 99 points.

Glad I travelled to Ottawa (actually the suburban town of Kanata, Ontario) for that 2008 show, it really paid dividends for this made-up contest, hahaha!

Great idea! Playing it Botley-style with one entry per unique song times a multiple for repeats, my results (based on 22 shows) are below. I can't wait for the L.A. veterans to post and blow us out of the water, hahaha.

"Subterraneans" seems to me erroneously high-scoring, because most of the setlist.fm entries from 1995 count it as part of Bowie's set, not NIN's (even though all of NIN performed it onstage, plus Bowie singing parts from other songs). It was a staple of those Outside/Dissonance co-headlining shows, though the 2018 all-NIN revival was a comparative rarity.

I'm inclined to agree with you.

By similar logic, we might also argue that the HTDA "covers" where all members who performed in 2013 (MM/TR/AR/AC) were onstage are overvalued. I believe this would properly recognize the rarity of Parasite as performed without Mariqueen...but I'm not champing at the bit to pro forma the data!

Keep in mind we're going by the listing on a user-entered database with its own rules. I mean, the 2018 Palladium shows were all entirely NIN headlining sets, the 1995 shows had a different structure. It's not like Robin and Ilan left the stage (or Rob Sheridan took over the lighting rig!) so they could transition to a HTDA lineup.

I used both - Setlist for the states/points, nintourhistory for what I've seen because I don't have photographic memory.

GUYS JUST USE THE RULES ESTABLISHED ABOVE.

Yeah, I realized after posting that one thing nintourhistory doesn't do is "group" the playcounts with a nice number that's usable as a score.

Over on the opposite end of the scale, until this year it was unthinkable to me that I'd see a NIN show where they DIDN'T play "Wish" OR "Terrible Lie" OR "March of the Pigs", but the second night in NYC this year was that show... and it fucking ruled!

    3. I Would for You (St. Paul, MN, Xcel Energy Center, 2013)

I don't have time to make this all fancy or figure out which rubric we're using, but I believe I'm at 2,171 with multipliers:

    160 Anthrax
    160 A Drowning
    160 Greensleeves
    147 On The Wing
147 Down In The Park x2
    147 Welcome Oblivion x2
    140 Cars
    140 Atmosphere x2
    134 Subterraneans x2
134 And All That Could Have Been x2

(If Subterraneans is disqualified, then I'll sub in BBB x1 for 134 fewer total points aka 2,037)

EDIT: In related news, I did such a good job of avoiding spoilers on this tour, I only just now learned Dear World was played.

SECOND EDIT: I feel like excluding covers doesn't work with multipliers, as most of us will start to get into songs that have been played 20+ times, thus increasing the likelihood of skewed scores. For instance, I've seen Just Like You Imagined 4 times, making it (101+4=) 404 points for me, which is more than any single song on the above list.

Wow!! Thanks for all the posts so far! (I more than half expected this thread to be down-voted into oblivion.)

    Some observations:

    1. Regarding multiples, I envisioned that each performance would count as one of your ten. So the "perfect" (i.e., max possible) score is still just 1561 (each of the 160s + 3 147s).
    2. It was inevitable that the highest scores will be influenced a ton by a handful of shows, including this month's run at the Palladium. So I concur entirely that LA-area residents are at a huge advantage. Although the bias against flyover country is handled nicely by the setlist variety at the shows in Chicago.
    3. Setlist.fm was chosen for its convenience, but as has been pointed out, it is not perfect. In fact, it is not even static. One could obviously go crazy looking at all of the combinations and permutations of lineups, etc., as well as trying to solve setlist discrepancies, especially for older shows. As one poster has noted, some of the grouping/tallying features of Setlist.fm are particularly helpful here. If I was to do anything, I would "freeze" the current data and make that the 'official' scoring matrix.
    4. In addition to 86-ing covers, some other variants could be to eliminate newer material, Ghosts tracks, cap the number/date range of qualifying shows, etc. The possibilities are endless. Each change could make for some interesting outcomes, and would certainly minimize the impact of having attended only a handful of critical dates.

Most importantly, FUN was the objective.

Thanks again to everyone for playing along!

Well... I won't be winning this... that's for sure...

    7 117 The Background World London - June 24, 2018
    8 117 The Background World Paris - June 25, 2018
    9 114 I can't give everything away Bakersfield - July 19, 2017
    10 114 I can't give everything away Sacramento - Oct 21, 2017
    Total 1190

    1190/1561 = 76%

One thing I learned, which shocked me looking at those song stats on setlist.fm was "Kinda I want to" was only ever played 7 times. Thought it would have been played more during 89-91. Guess that was the deep cut for those days.

Personally I don't think we should count HTDA songs, not because I don't like them (they are fuckin bad ass), but then we should be counting solo HTDA shows too then, since anyone who saw that tour would qualify for those songs. I would say it was more special to catch that tour, then it would be to have been at a nin show where you got a couple of the songs performed by most of the band.

Because I'm morbidly curious, and have an unhealthy math fetish, I made a Rarest Shows handicapper's guide. These are among the Golden Tickets of rare shows as they featured 2 or more of the least played songs in NIN tour history; if you attended any of these, your score should receive a big boost:

    1st 9/8/09 Fonda 587 points 4 of the 46 rarest songs
    2nd 12/15/18 Palladium 572 4
    3rd 12/7/18 Palladium 568 4
    t-4th 8/30/96 Jimmy's 560 4
    t-4th 9/5/96 Irving Plaza 560 4
    t-4th 9/8/96 Masquerade 560 4
    7th 8/28/09 Aragon 532 4
    8th 9/10/09 Wiltern 434 3
    9th 8/26/09 Terminal 5 392 3
    t-10th 1/5/95 Centrum 294 2
    t-10th 1/6/95 Nassau Vet 294 2
    t-10th 10/29/05 Voodoo 294 2
    t-10th 10/30/05 Voodoo 294 2
    t-14th 10/30/13 BB&T 278 2
    t-14th 12/14/18 Palladium 278 2
    16th 3/11/14 Perth 274 2
    17th 12/3/18 Bill Graham 272 2
    18th 8/29/09 Aragon 271 2
    t-19th 8/25/08 Seagate 268 2
    t-19th 11/25/18 Saenger 268 2
    t-21st 2/26/14 Tokyo 265 2
    t-21st 3/7/14 Qantas 265 2
    t-21st 3/14/14 Rod Laver 265 2
    t-21st 3/19/14 Vector 265 2
    25th 9/2/09 Palladium 261 2
    26th 5/12/09 Frank Erwin 259 2
    t-27th 6/16/18 The Joint 258 2
    t-27th 6/24/18 Royal Albert 258 2
    t-29th 7/30/09 Madrid 245 2
    t-29th 8/22/09 Bowery 245 2

METHODOLOGY: The Setlist.fm data as of tonight was reviewed; the arbitrary cut-off was songs played up to 9 times each, of which there were 46. Thirty separate shows featured at least 2 of the 46 songs, and are listed here. (Approx. 103 shows featured only a single song out of the top 46.)

Numbers aside, it was an incredible 2018 and I'm extremely grateful for the shows I've seen and all the fantastic people I've met this year.

At the end of the 2014 European tour I remember thinking that it was cool but the setlists were kind of stale and I was somewhat fine that the tour had ended. But this year was absolutely wild and I cannot fucking wait for the next shows

    1 x 147 - We Take Mystery (To Bed)
    1 x 131 - Digital
    1 x 111 - Satellite
    1 x 107 - This Isn’t the Place
    1 x 104 - Various Methods of Escape
    1 x 96 - Running
    1 x 92 - While I’m Still Here
    1 x 92 - Black Noise
    1 x 81 - Now I’m Nothing
    1 x 81 - A Warm Place

    1042
in total. Dropping out the covers obliterates my total and adds these at the bottom:

    1 x 74 - All Time Low
    1 x 70 - Last

    Leaving me at 908. Oof.

This is certainly aided by the only two shows I've seen, those being Tension on Halloween 2013 in Orlando, and Atlanta this year. The HM songs all give good points because almost all of them disappeared after that tour.

    1 Dear World 138
    2 Subterraneans* 134
    3 Digital* 131
4 Banged and Blown Through* 124
    5 28 Ghosts IV 119
    6 I Can’t Give Everything Away* 114
    7-8 Over and Out 109*2
    9-10 This Isn’t the Place 107*2

    1192 Total

I went by the original rules and counted multiples separately. Some other bonuses we could do are extra points for debuts or guest appearances. Guests could get interesting: “Banged and Blown Through” has been played 8 times but only once with Saul Wlliams. “Metal” has been played often but sometimes with Numan. Should those performances count more?

    Without Covers:

    7 21 Ghots III 107
    8-9 The Perfect Drug 104*2
10 Various Methods of Escape 104

    1004 Total

I’m surprised “Gone, Still” has been played more often than I thought. I thought for sure that would boost my score but it didn’t even make my list.

Not to derail this thread but I was also at that 2008 Council Bluffs show and had no idea that that was the 2nd and final time 32 Ghosts IV was performed! I love that track too! Makes me want to go sneak around a dark alley or something

This is a great idea...until i started doing it! Even though i've done 4 shows over 10 years (2 of which were super small 1500 people special shows) i've not seen ANY rare songs...AT ALL. In fact each of the shows i've seen have almost been the same bar new tracks for albums out that tour cycle...AND NOT EVEN RARE ONES, JUST ONES THAT BECAME STAPLES....BLAST IT!

...i need to go to more shows!

Ohhhh shit son! Subterraneans is in this!?!?!? I completely glanced over that.
This changes everything about my score.... completely.... drastically!

Yet, I'm too lazy to edit my original post. It'll be way too much editing.

Lazy man's edit: My new score will be 1210.

Two things: 1. NYC / Chicago / LA crowds really have the upper hand on this 2. this CBI tour has really unlocked a level of obsessiveness never seen before and I applaud you all.

FYI: Setlist.fm does not include the cover/tease of The Loop Closes (it's listed as a note attached to The Great Destroyer) from Webster 2017 but NIN Tour History lists it as a separate song. Make of that whatever you like...

Nor does Setlist differentiate between Right Where It Belongs / v2...NIN Tour History says v2 played 3 times
