C'mon... does it really have to be to scale with the books? i get if something seems lame in comparison or having to be reimagined but where's the fun in watching a show where you know everything that's going to happen?

I'm prob not even gonna bother with the books until the series is over personally.

I pretend that there aren't any books at all. I just watch and enjoy.

Joffrey being sassy was everything. I really liked how freaky the show version of the Thenns were. I cackled at Oleanna (as always). Fucking loved Oberyn.

I need to watch it again.

Really fine episode - I wonder if it would have been even better if I hadn't read the first three books.
The only flaw, in my opinion, is that they made Cersei a little over-the-top bitchy in her scene.
I wondered how they will open the season and couldn't decide between Tyrion meeting the Dornish delegation and Spoiler: a certain lord falling from a certain bridge. Then they opened with that Tywin scene. Spoiler: In the prologue they showed Ned Stark's beheadings, so I guess the "Two Swords" theme means that there is always one sword you kill with, and one sword that kills you... So I guess that Tywin scene was meant to express that now Tywin is on top, but that the fall is inevitable. The family gives, the family takes, or something like that... Anyway, I really liked these small touches of freedom from the books. It's the first episode where I basically knew what was happening but I still massively enjoyed it.

Oh. Oh my. I mean, I can't say that's surprising. But UGH is right nonetheless.

I'm going to hope you're just incorrect about this one...

Mixed feelings about the first episode. Felt a bit anti-climactic after the hype leading up to it (my own fault I guess?). Felt more like a mid-season episode.

That being said, the general tone was heard load and clear... the times are a-changing. Considering how quiet many people who read the books are, I'm sure something big is coming. Heck, even my SO ensured she watched this episode with me. I assume she expected something else to happen based on the books.

... lastly, Sansa needs to grow up. I get where the direction of her character is coming from, but she still annoys the crap out of me. Least favourite character by a mile. I at least get some mild enjoyment out of Joffrey's ambivalence.

Renewed for Season Five AND Six. (all other seasons have only been one year renewals I believe)

If I recall correctly, in the books, Spoiler: Jamie approaches Cersei once more... in the chapel in front of a certain dead person... but Jamie doesn't go that far there.

I know I've bitched about this before, but man, I wish there was a book thread where all book people could go with their book spoilers so I don't have to worry about accidentally mousing over one... Oh wait, there is one! I'm pretty sure everyone in there watches the show, but not everyone here has read the books. Or just open a show vs. book thread. Seriously, what's the point of having a thread full of blacked out passages...

The 'bar' scene at the end was most enjoyable, mostly as it reminded me of Deadwood.

Normally I meow the intro to Game of Thrones, but this is quite possibly the greatest thing I've seen in my life... Or maybe I've just been playing too much Goat Simulator.

I was laughing so hard that I drooled on myself. Didn't even know that was possible!

    @ Orestes:

Ah, indeed. And now I know why I thought, as I wrote above, that Cersei was overly bitchy - the chronology is mixed up!

I also enjoyed seeing Sigur Ros grabbing Joffrey's change.

I genuinely laughed out loud at that bit. It was really cool to see them on the show, but to throw them into an actual comedic situation was fucking dynamite.

That should have been the season opener IMO.

Would have been the best premiere ever!

I legitimately cackled when they showed that. I didn't think they'd include it.

I didn't quite like the pacing this time. Yes, they had to introduce the Bran-Theon-Stannis story arcs to the fourth season, but then it became half "What are they up to?" and half wedding. But each half on its own was good, of course. Apparently Gleeson wants to quit acting after GoT, a bit of a waste.
