I have been on a huge electronica binge for the last.. uh, well, all of 2012, and like Anthony Bordain, I'm hungry for more!

Typically on my playlists lately:

Aphex Twin and all the side projects. Massive, massive amounts of RDJ.
Culprate - Colours - Holy crap this is an amazing album!
Amon Tobin - If you're in this thread you probably know his stuff. Crazy creative sounds always draw me in
Ben Frost - Some of the creepiest shit ever
Skrillex - Yeah, yeah, he's the ACDC of electronic music, and lots of bros listen to him, but his stuff is still fun to listen to.. on a limited basis
Orbital - Wonky - Despite a few rather embarrassing tracks, I'm really digging the new Orbital record
Plaid - Scintilli - Digging the new Plaid as well
Deadmau5 - various albums - Fantastic "doing something" music -dancing, painting, driving, homework, exercise, etc
Underworld - almost everything by this classic band gets play from me, but my favorite is dubnobasswithmyheadman, and Oblivion With Bells
NASA Voyager Recordings - This isn't electronic music, it's the actual sounds of the planets and their moons as recorded by the Voyager 1 space probe, and it's the most amazing, rich, and evolving ambient music ever

I'm interested in anything good in whatever genre, drum n bass, trance, ambient, whatever. I'm not quite as interested in vocals in the tracks, but if it's good it will hardly stop me. Some of those Deadmau5 tracks with vocals are some of my favorites, for example.

Let the synth wars begin!

I feel highly comfortable with Black Strobes burn your own church. Haven't listened to their other stuff, but I like it alot for its diverse sound. That and a friend introduced me to a group called Old Apparatus. Pretty soundscape-y and they remind me of Telefon Tel-Aviv but I enjoy them alot.

Also Keith Hillebrandt. I still have to dive deeper into his records, but I like what I'm hearing (transporte).

I love nearly all Electronic music. Dont really know where the hell to begin!

My favourite areas of Electronic Music is really the areas revolving around House Music and the Jungle, Drum n Bass, UK Garage scene.

But also love, Acid House anything out of Detroit, Warp records, Ambient House, early Dubstep.

Underworld are probably my favourite electronic 'act' of all time.

What i dont like is some of the awful Euro trance, and some of the recent commercial U.S Dubstep shit. Also some Minimal Techno can be painfully dull and cold sometimes.

I will say... The Fight Club soundtrack is one of the most underrated albums. What does "chemical burn" sound like? hmm protostep

if they promoted it with a sticker on the front saying "the blokes what did paul's boutique", I think it would be up there with Vangelis' blade runner ost and goblin's dawn of the dead

I wish I got what people like so much about Byetone. I've tried several times.
I refuse to believe that "it's just not my thing." I can appreciate music that I personally don't like. With Byetone I just don't get what the intense appeal is. Even with The Field, where I'm generally just bored, I get what people like.

Can someone please help explain what they like about this music?

Okay, I listened to Burial's album today and it just seems like a low rent Massive Attack from 10 years ago, derivative even. What makes this a breakthrough?

Flying Lotus' .. the jury is out. It sounds like a mess of jumbled sounds, but then again sometimes Aphex Twin and Autechure do as well. Maybe it's just that I like the later artists jumble better? I'll keep at it a bit though, it might grow on me.

Burial's all about atmosphere. Never really thought of him as having a similar sound to Massive Attack, but I get the comparison. Sure, Burial's stuff isn't a patch on Massive Attack's best work, but it's relatively early days yet and I think a large amount of the hype around him is much more well deserved than, say, the Field.

FlyLo's appeal to me is cool beats + crazy sounds. Simple as that.

As for cool Underworld live stuff:

Burials last EP's Street Halo and Kindred are up there with some of my favorite releases in recent years.. Really pushing his sound forward yet maintaining the ambience and atmosphere he's known for.
I have to say I prefer The Field though, Looping State of Mind is really sublime, again, really feels like a step ahead of his previous releases, especially Yesterday and Today which fell kinda flat with me.

*sounds of space*

YES! Check it out, Daphne, I've tracked down several sources of downloadable space sounds (some simulated, as with the black holes).

Sounds of Solar Oscillations (http://solar-center.stanford.edu/singing/SOUNDS/) in mp3 & AIFF format, including a 22 minute recording of an entire year of the Sun!
Neutron stars, pulsars, and black holes (http://www.black-holes.org/explore1.html) in WAV format - all simulated sounds, of course, but these are the sounds they're predicting they'll hear with the LISA and LIGO missions.

edit:
We observe the Sun in New Mexico with a multi-frequency radiotelescope that has been modified
and customized for binaural audio recording. Here is a collection of specimen sound files of the
major types of solar radio emissions from some significant events in recent years. (http://www.heliotown.com/Radio_Sun_Introduction.html)

Fields were mentioned on here the album Looping State of Mind got quite bit of praise i thought it had its moments but Seefeel did it better.
The repetitive looping technique they were doing back in 1992-1993 on the primitive cubase, they were on Warp played a lot live with Aphex Twin, and Autechre amd other early post rock bands on the London underground club circuit they later worked with the Cocteau Twins,...their music was a real predecessor to Boards of Canada who became much more well known later and had a similar sound.
Sounds ahead of its time

Seefeel's material was very powerful, really glacial, can really hit you, they are back together again now.

Three unrelated things:

1) SeeFeel is fucking amazing, thanks for sharing it! Looking forward to the full albums.

2) I stumbled across this article (http://www.hypebot.com/hypebot/2012/01/case-study-pretty-lights-bittorrent-partnership.html) about Pretty Lights, who give away all their music for free, teaming up with Bittorrent. I'm interested in people's opinion on the music itself, but I almost find the sample licensing sidestep and partnership with Bittorrent a more interesting topic. Thoughts?

3) Re:Burial - Maybe I should clarify since it keeps coming up. Nearly every track on the album I listened to sounded like a lesser version of the song below off, Mezzanine (a 15 year old album). Others are reminiscent of Mezzanine as well (the side stick, slow beats, scratching record sounds, atmospherics, etc). Ever since trip hop emerged in the mid 90s people have been making songs that sound like Burial's entire album to me. It's not a bad sound or anything, it's just been done (many) times before, which would be okay if they were adding something new to it, but they're not. Additionally, the samples of dialogue he uses drive me fucking crazy. Do we really need another ultra cliche line about looking in the mirror and not recognizing the reflection? That whole thing made me cringe.

Checking Pretty Lights now. Heard the name a fair bit so may as well see what the fuss is about.

Throwing out a major recommendation for Vatican Shadow. Dark "IDM"/ambient stuff (with a hint of industrial and a Middle Eastern flavour here and there) from the twisted mind behind Prurient (straight up noise/power electronics ala Whitehouse, though the last album proper was EBM/synthpop-esque).

Re:Burial - Maybe I should clarify since it keeps coming up. Nearly every track on the album I listened to sounded like a lesser version of the song below off, Mezzanine (a 15 year old album). But Burial doesn't really sound like that at all. If Teardrop started playing in the middle of a Burial album it would be the wierdest thing ever.

The connection between Burial and Massive Attack is thematic at best, since they sort of share that dark urban soulful thing, but Massive Attack are way more of a pop group, with real singing and live instruments and standard song structures. Burial's sound bears a much closer resemblance to old jungle and garage tracks than anything even remotely triphop.

Untrue is sort of like Loveless to me, in that both of those records take a very specific sound/feeling and they mine it for all its worth, getting to the essential core of what others had only been hinting at.

Magtig

@Mantra - Okay, well maybe I'll have to give it one more shot, but it really didn't sound like anything new or interesting to me at all. Well done, sure, but certainly not ground breaking or original.

@Blue Calx - I downloaded a bunch of BT, going to give that a listen.

Also, I downloaded Pretty Lights, and it sounded pretty decent (it's pretty mainstream: big breakbeats, hooks, structure, etc). Again, I'd be really interested on people's reaction to the article I posted above on them. Where's Jinsai on this one? :D

Mostly though, I've been listening to Autechtre, Squarepusher, and Aphex Twin nonstop. Oh! And that Vaetxh album, Mass, as well as Seefeel are hitting the spot too.

Culprate also remains a constant on my playlist. Although they definitely came from dubstep roots, they've got real depth and completely transcend the genre. Again, I would highly encourage everyone to listen to the Colours album (where every song is based on a color).

@Mantra - Okay, well maybe I'll have to give it one more shot, but it really didn't sound like anything new or interesting to me at all. Well done, sure, but certainly not ground breaking or original.

You gotta listen to it really late at night when you're feeling horrible, or maybe when you're riding the bus through downtown. That's why there are 90,000 fan vids on youtube just like this...

Do you guys like BT at all? Not too many people talk about him, but I think he's amazing. He's released two new ambient albums just a couple days ago, Morceau Subrosa and If the Stars Are Eternal Than So Are You And Ite His next EDM album, the follow-up to the monster These Hopeful Machines comes out later this year on Armada.

A man after my own heart. I fucking love BT. Everyone lurking and posting in this thread NEEDS to hear his masterpiece This Binary Universe (http://www.amazon.com/This-Binary-Universe-Dvd-Dts/dp/B000G8OZ16/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1341333732&sr=1-1&keywords=this+binary+universe) - it's one of my all-time favorite albums. If you're a music fan, you have to hear it. I love BT's vocal/pop/trance stuff, too (and especially when he dilutes it with his more avant-garde tendencies like on These Hopeful Machines), but his instrumental material is my favorite.

If The Stars Are Eternal So Are You and I (http://www.amazon.com/The-Stars-are-Eternal-You/dp/B008CTJ4TO/ref=pd_sim_m_1) (the follow-up to Binary Universe) is currently rocking my world. The whole album is great, but 14 min. opener "13 Angels on My Broken Windowsill" is downright profound (I loved playing it for my brother and getting to hear him say 'Wow' at the appropriate moments). I can't wait to do some night driving with that album. You can hear some samples of it on BT's soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/bt) in the form of "Hikari", "Hymn[808]", and the absolutely beautiful "Our Dark Garden" (though those tracks aren't even the best the album has to offer).

His other new album, Morceau Subrosa (http://www.amazon.com/Morceau-Subrosa-BT/dp/B008CTJ11K/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1341334499&sr=1-1&keywords=morceau+subrosa), is very good ambient, though I was hoping for more a bit more stuff like the incredible opening piece (http://soundcloud.com/bt/nicht-musik-verkl-rung-no-2-in).

In conclusion, This Binary Universe and If The Stars come very highly recommended from me. These Hopeful Machines is more outwardly pop-y, but it's still great, and has moments of brilliance in songs like "Le Nocturne de Lumiere."

BlueCalx, I'm pretty psyched for his next EDM album, too, of course. He posted a bit of his new song with Jes at a recent gig and it sounded fucking great.

Two Fingers also have a self-titled album featuring vocals by Sway

I wasn't really feeling the vocals on the debut, the new album "Stunt Rhythms" is mainly instrumental and a step up
the 2nd disc does feature some extra tracks along with vocal mixes of a few

that Two Fingers mix is great... Amon did another one back during the release of the first Two Fingers album (though I recommend the Instrumentals album over the vocal one with Sway) a lot of the stuff off "Stunt Rhythms" is in the old mix that they had a couple of years back. I was so happy to finally see it released on the new album.

I'm a huge Amon Tobin fan and have seen him like 5 times live so far... he use to do this boat cruise in NYC each summer... 5 of those times were on the boat... once for ISAM 1.0

the last cruise he did the other month, he actually just chilled on the back outside deck with fans drinking and just chilling and hanging out, such a down to earth dude and very humble when you approach him and praise his work. i'm always too scared to come off as fanboy lol.

A group i have been seriously admiring a lot recently is FLUKE, people probably best know them for doing the track ZION for The Matrix Reloaded during the sex scene.
They had a very distinctive sound. Looking back they were very ahead of their time, subtle futuristic very well produced, they did their best to keep themselves very underground. Despite that their tracks would still sell hundreds of thousands. They would play last minute gigs rarely outside London in unusual places like factories, power stations i saw them in about 1998-99.
they have not done anything for nearly a decade dont know if they are going to get back together but their material from the 90s is mindblowing. They could have gone overground like The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers but didnt want to.
You have probably seen about 20 mainstream Hollywood films with their tracks in them like Sin City, i hear them all the time.

I still think that track they used in The Matrix is one of the most beautiful tracks ever the orignal version called Slap is even better.

"The Fat Of The Land" is one of the most influential and greatest electronic albums of all time. It set records all over the world. They're in the Guiness Book Of World Records because of it. Plus they were in the record books for the amount of tracks that made it high up into the UK charts. FotL went to number one in like a dozen countries at once and was the album that really caused the first electronic music boom of the mid-90's over here in America. At the time, Radiohead's "OK Computer" was just released and FotL was outselling "OK Computer," which was in 2nd place in the UK charts, and Prodigy were outselling Radiohead 4 to 1. And we all know how big "OK Computer" was at the time. You would hear "Firestarter" being played alongside rock songs on commercial radio over here in the States.

love fat of the land but I'm not sure that's correct - I only recall 3 singles (smack my bitch up, breathe and firestarter), and plenty of bands have had 3 singles from an album chart highly. Smack my bitch up is legend but I don't think it was a smash hit

but yep, heady days, that album always takes me back. Come back 90s, all is forgiven

Out of all the "electronic groups" to dominate this thread, the only name more predictable than Prodigy is Moby. If we want to make a thread about Prodigy, I'm down (and I'm ok with that, I actually like prodigy, don't get me wrong... well, actually I don't really like them that much, but whatever), but it's not like anyone interested in electronic music hasn't already heard of The Prodigy.

sorry, I'm just getting bummed out on the "yay prodigy" slant that's been happening, and I promise it only has a little bit to do with the fact that I don't give a fuck about them.

Also, while I'm here, Music for the Jilted Generation is INSANELY overrated, and it actually sucks. Liam Howlett is a (unfortunately) successful snake oil salesman of electronic music.

Sorry for being a dick.

The record wasn't for in the States, but in the UK charts with something like13 singles up until that time that made into the top 20 or something to that effect. This had to be somewhere around '97-'99, remember bumming the book from the library in high school.

I have a hard-on for Daft Punk's Homework and I often keep coming back to it, anything after that was such a letdown.
Didn't really like Justice until last year or so, I went apeshit crazy over Cross, such a great album.
I'm starting to dig deadmau5, not just because of the music he makes but the way he's reaching to his audience (Q's & A's on Tumblr and 4chan, live streams during the making of his latest album). I love it when he admitted that he -along with many other big names- is a "button pusher" and he made a really good point about DJs. And I think his remix of Foo Fighters' The Rope is fantastic.
Crystal Castles all the way!

PS - last thing I've heard from The Prodigy was Girls and that's it. Still trying to bring myself to give Invaders Must Die a chance.

@Perch
I've been a fan literally since the 4th grade and just discovered them as "Music From The Jilted Generation" was coming out. and I was really into "Experience" at the time.

I quite enjoy "Girls," but "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" was their weakest release by Prodigy standards
There was some cool demos being played lived at the start of the making of that album, but then they scrapped it and started fresh because they didn't want to make "The Fat Of The Land Part 2"
Some cool ideas were lost or completely reworked into crappier versions for that album
And better versions of album tracks came out a little bit after AONO's release plus some cut tracks that were made available on their greatest hits release called "Their Law," which was done so Prodigy could break their contract with XL Recordings who they weren't happy with during the AONO promo time
If they took a little more time so that those newer mixes were on the album instead and a balance of the cut tracks that didn't make it, AONO could have been much stronger

Trigger (bits became "Shoot Down" on the album)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls8b9PK9g2w

Little Goblin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dghfIxnEe5Q

Benny Blanco (bits became "Girls")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZigyJ-DUl_Q

Nuclear (bits became "Hot Ride")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ9Zdp3oyjo

Baby's Got A Temper was the only official release from this era pre-AONO
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FglU0X-Vyrw

Here's some better reworks and cut tracks from post-AONO...

Spitfire ('05) single mix
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhYuB32-1MA

More Girls (from "Girls" single)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzdgBDXxeCw

Back 2 Skool (AONO cut track from "Their Law")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3d7vUPEFEI

Razor (AONO cut track from "Their Law")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk0o5KgT--A

Warning (AONO cut track)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0ANpXs__vg

Under My Wheels ("Their Law" mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-5OEoukcdA

Who U Foolin' ("Hot Ride" single)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON8uqVfaHSA

I quite enjoyed "Invaders Must Die" though it is very upbeat... imagine the hard hitting aggressive-ness of "Fat Of The Land" but with the synths and old school rave style of "Experience" is the best way to describe it. With a new album coming 2013.

Yeah, I gotta agree with Jinsai here. If we're going to talk about a big mainstream electronic act dominating this thread why not any host of better acts? How about Underworld for starters? Is Aphex Twin big enough to be mainstream? Why not Flying Lotus or Ratatat? They're all way better than Prodigy.

Anyway... since I started this thread I've veered further and further away from the mainstream stuff. Prodigy, Skrillex, and Justice all seem.. well, kind of cheesy to be honest. But sometimes I like cheesy, so I'm not dismissing them entirely (except in the case of Justice which gives me crazy ear fatigue due to all the compression shenanigans). BT is pretty decent for mainstream stuff, but as far as really cool danceable tracks I found that Two Fingers (aka Amon Tobin) mix posted above to be exceptional. I really need to track down a bit more of the weird but danceable tracks like that.

No one is stopping anyone from discussing any of those artists... or any other electronic artist if they choose
i love Aphex Twin, Underworld, Flying Lotus... and i'll gladly discuss them if they were brought up

We are talking about all electronic acts in here... it's a discussion... what does everything have to become a fight?

It's "The Really Super Cool Electronica" thread, not the "Only Obscure/Underground/No One Knows About Electronica" thread

Sorry if there are people who don't like The Prodigy, but they are a part of electronica and people that do like them were discussing them for a few posts.
Don't see the real biggie, the real issue is because we're talking about a group that some people apparently don't like
I think I listed a large amount of electronica artists in my posts... underground and commercial
So people stopped for a sec and discussed one band, I don't see why people are getting bent out of shape about it

Isn't this the whole point of thread... to showcase and share electronic music and discuss it?

The only people that seem mad we talked about The Prodigy for a few posts are those who simply do not like them and I think the amount of my contribution to this thread allows me to discuss a band that I enjoy. I posted PLENTY of other artists throughout the pages

Not trying to be a dick, just express that this is the whole point of what this thread is about... and there's going to be music that people show that you may or may not like
But we rather derail a thread because we don't like a particular artist

Find it a bit unfair for everyone involved with the discussion simply because someone does not like a particular artist

And I'm willing to discuss anyone else's suggestions that they have to offer

Magtig
11-06-2012, 04:04 PM
Discussion? Fight? Where is that happening? Mostly what I see is you posting 15 remixes, and then 15 more, with a few lines of text here and there. I don't think anyone's upset except you, judging by the defensive tone of your post. The Prodigy certainly aren't off limits, so keep posting away if you want to, but if you're free to post 30 tracks from one act, I'm free to say I don't think they're very good, right? For the record I do like some of the music you've posted in here, but your last post seems sort of like a response to a message that was never written.

neorev
11-06-2012, 04:17 PM
maybe I read what you were trying to convey wrong and I apologize for that.

my response was a combination between Jinsai's earlier post and yours.

and like I said, I wasn't trying to come off as a dick or anything, but for me it felt like "how dare you talk about The Prodigy in the electronica thread."
of course, I could be misinterpreting something that was written. you can't always get the proper tone someone is typing.

but for me, the amount of other stuff that i posted dwarfs the several things about The Prodigy that I posted.

in between The Prodigy stuff, I posted another dozen tracks from different groups.
for me it just kinda felt like, "oh, all you talk about is The Prodigy" when i've posted loads of music

so again, i apologize if i took what was written and misread it.
Jinsai actually PM'ed after his initial post and there is honestly no bad blood or anything at all.

Prodigy is pop but christ it's way more on the side of the angels than bloody Skrillex or Pendulum

this thread needs more dark ambient & genuine weirdness though, there's more to electronica than jumping around

here's some stuff from 1948 (damn!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oBcM1xxmeQ

my Delia Derbyshire fixation continues, this is such a scary collection of pieces, I remember years ago I was in a bit of a delicate state after a night out & it left me too scared to go downstairs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF35rhtJZbs

whereas this is probably enough to induce a delicate state

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jetzY-W78gg

I really love BBC Radiophonic Workshop stuff, there was a definite thread between that stuff and artists like Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Nurse with Wound etc. I think probably one of the reasons I loved NIN's "Ghosts" so much was because it had that sort of feel, like those soundtrack LPs of radiophonic music you used to be able to get, which would be weird short pieces meant to accompany long forgotten radio plays and TV serials. I think TR said something along the lines of the Ghosts tracks being meant to sound like they were soundtracks to scenes which didn't yet exists. This is the sort of thing that threads TR to the artists mentioned earlier IMO. Watching that video fo TR with the swarmatron (or whatever) just seemed so much like that documentary where Delia showed off her setup

It's newish.
I think it's the newest dieselboy. And it is fucking AMAZING (if you like the harder stuff.)
I'm not sure how old you are, but one thing that sets this apart from the dieselboy of my misspent youth is just how far the genre has come over the years...it's truly incredible compared to ak1200's "fully automatic", dara's "future perfect" or dieselboy's " a soldier's story." (as wonderful, vital and seminal as all of those albums were.) DnB has evolved, and the result is truly mind numbing. instead of 10 or 12 tracks, this mix has fucking something like EIGHTY SEVEN tracks in eighty four minutes. If you still like the heavy stuff, this mix is for you!

Edit: just had to throw this in there...there's a bit of dubstep in the mix too.
and while yer at it, dig THIS insanity....i guess it's what you'd call "drumstep."

would it be appropriate to talk about new beat in here since we're covering a lot of electronica? EBM/synth offshoot, mostly penned by the same group of acid-rave belgians who wanted to focus more on the dance side of the spectrum. some really amazing electronic music from the late 80s/early 90s with a very particular sound. most popular tracks: lords of acid- i sit on acid & technotronic- pump up the jam (guilty pleasures), but here's a few favorites:

their last album "Rhythm & Stealth" came out 15 years ago
their debut album "Leftism" is considered one of the greatest electronic albums of all time

2015 has been a great year for the old school "electronica" fans out there
we got the new Prodigy record, 8:58 (1/2 of Orbital)'s album, new Leftfield, and new Chemical Brothers in July

and old school IDM greats like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher have released albums as well

Leftism is still my favourite dance album of all time. Electronica does not get more exhilarating, Inspection Check One is the best big beat track ever. Whole album is an absolutely essential recording. Ive never heard an electronic album flow together so well, it has not dated either.
Never really got into Rhythm and Stealth, its dissapointed many when it came out, it did have a couple of great tracks though, Swords in particular.

This new Leftfield im not sure about one of the founding members is missing, its a solo project for Neil Barnes now.
I like the one new track ive heard, so maybe it will suprise me and be awesome.

I'm actually a huge fan of "Rhythm & Stealth"
I still quite enjoyed "Leftism" but love the variation/depth of the follow up, which seems less of dance floor record
The new album ain't bad, but does feel different... that dub side is kinda gone

Can i just say that this whole "edm" thing sucks my balls?

every fucking show in the states is like 95% "edm" (which is, as far as i can tell, code for cookie cutter house music,) and 5% dubstep.

I miss DnB and downtempo and idm and, jesus christ, even breakbeat.

everything is so fucking housey these days.

i went to the first edc in dallas and saw a bunch of dope ass dnb acts. that was...2000 i think? yeah, i'm showing my age ;)

i watched that edc movie that came out recently and it was nothing but nut hugging house.

:/

i think i'm living in the wrong country

You should go to Detroit, instead? :-)

i miss seeing dieselboy and ak1200 and dara and pishposh and craze and andy c and adam f and ed rush and optikal and gridlock and ming & fs and qbert and tech-itch & decoder and loxy & dylan and bad company and mickey finn and dj swamp

and good god i could go on for ever and ever. all of those fuckers (and many many more) used to tour CONSTANTLY, and "in MY day ;), you could go to a rave party (when a rave was a rave) and go to the small tent and listen to that heavy duty stuff....
you know
the kind of electronic music that comes closer to metal music than disco...

at least dub step carries the SPIRIT, and at least there are SOME djs still doing it, and little local collectives like Ritual Kaos and Covert Operations and Gritsy and Two Tone in texas....

Yeah, well, don't forget ... Detroit techno dates back to 1981, so Detroit is kinda Ground Zero for a lot of this stuff.

But be careful not to get too hung up on nostalgia, that shit can make you stale and boring.

If you're a fan of the heavy side of DnB, check out the album "Mako vs Geist" by DJ?Acucrack

Just happened to stumble upon these guys performing live years ago. I had no clue who they were. It was pretty cool to see drum n' bass performed live with all hardware rather than the usual DJ mixing. After seeing them, I went out and bought this album that they were promoting at the show.

hey thanks man! glad ya dig it. :D
my Bandcamp page goes from newest to oldest...
my old stuff was more dancefloor-oriented, my homage to the old school warehouse breaks and rave scene of the early 90's
but from "Children Of The Bomb" on is where I felt like I found my true voice, went down a darker, heavier, more beat-oriented path
i released a few EPs in support of that album with newer tracks, alternate versions, and remixes from fellow producers i know
i started working with different vocalists, help me open up my musical palate and mess with different styles from rock to hip hop

Detroit is easily one of my favourite cities in the world for Electronic music. Its always existed in its own little world, its always remained very underground. Its very hardcore and unrelenting some of the stuff thats come out from there. But a lot of it had a catchy pop edge too which made me wonder why the major labels always ignored the electronic scene there and focused on the Eminems and the rest of the Hip Hop scene instead.
Its definetly been the most influential city on European EDM for past 30 years, DEEPLY influential in the UK on Aphex Twin,808 State, KLF, Autechre, Future Sound of London etc, Its always been ahead of the curve, The amount of good music thats come out of the (relatively small?) city is insane.
The collective known as Underground Resistance and their other allieses have produced so so so so much good music.

Yeah, I did all the visuals for the promo.
Every frame of distortion was done by hand, each frame lasts about a 10th of a second.
I had some art that I created and wanted the whole distort TV kinda look.
I love using my camera's panorama effect while zoomed up on a TV, you get some great glitch art.

To Neorev,

Thank you for your post on The Aquila I have never heard of them before and I went to iTunes to check it out and I dig them. I bought the album its very cool I would have missed this if not for your post I haven't spent enough time with the album yet to give you a review but I did buy it and what I heard I do like. They are reminicent of Ticon who I love.

Thanks again.

That's awesome, man! He'll be super excited to hear! He was feeling a bit down with music, but I kept trying to tell him that he needed to actually frigging promote the album! lol As a producer, that's one of the biggest parts of music. You can have a great album, but if no one knows about it then it's just you alone with your great album. He's always kinda second guessed himself and is way too hard on himself, which has kept him from releasing stuff. So I've been lighting a fire under his ass to start getting music out there. :)

I've known the dude for well over a decade now. We were both a part of the Brainkiller forums, a fan site based in Italy. It's like the Echoing The Sound of The Prodigy, one of the biggest fan communities for them. Back in 2003, while trying to kill time waiting for their new album, we decided to host a little competition for the producers that circulated the boards who were fans of and inspired by the band. Ended up with 70+ entries, which were then voted on and whittled down to the best 12 tracks (we actually ended up with 13 tracks due to a tie for 12th place). We called this fan compilation "Music From The Jilted Generation Volume One," in homage of The Prodigy's second album "Music For The Jilted Generation." Aquila and I both had one of our early tracks make it onto to the compilation. I can't believe that was 12 frigging years ago! Anyway, I've been following Aquila's work ever since and a huge fan of his work.

I never heard of Ticon and will definitely check it out.
Thanks again for your support, man! Will pass it onto him. Happy Holidays!

Upon listening to The Aquila a little more its not that much like Ticon but that is a good thing, (check out Ticon Aero, they are two danish guys). I always dig checking out new artists and you are absolutely right marketing and getting the word out is essential to life of an album. I am a songwriter as well and I am getting ready to put my material out there(after two hard drive crashes and basically two albums lost) and I'm not sure how I'm going to get the music to an audience that might appreciate it. I'm not doing electronic music, its more guitar, Moog synth type stuff influences are Bowie, NIN, The Cure, Massive Attack etc.

I used Distrokid to get my music out on iTunes/Amazon/Google Play/Spotify/Tidal etc. You should check them out for when you release your music. It's only $25 for the year and you keep 100% of your profits. You get paid quarterly. Getting you music in digital stores is the easy part. Distrokid plus Bandcamp and my own site as well as YouTube and Soundcloud for streaming. But yeah, the hard part is getting the music to people's ears. On Facebook, I found a bunch of groups dedicated to certain styles of music that fit what I do and promote through there as well as finding band sites of artists that have inspired me and sharing stuff on their forums. Just some ideas for when you launch your release.

For instance, Susan a.k.a. It Was July found me on the official NIN forums. I was promoting some of my work and she just happened to stumble upon it. She private messaged me and things just went from there. She showed me her music and asked for a remix. Soon we started collaborating. .

She's a great singer/songwriter/producer, a bit inspired by NIN with a sorta poppy darkness...

I like some things you're posting here, but it does feel like this thread is getting hijacked to plug and self/friend-promote. I like a lot of your music, but.... what's happening here?

neorev
12-24-2015, 01:18 AM
Sorry, didnt mean to hijack anything. Sure, I've become friends with some of these folks, but I discovered them through their music first. A lot of the music I listen to I discovered through producer communities and groups. So I can't help if I know some of these folks. I actually like and listen to their stuff and thought it fit the whole "here's some cool electronic music" thread. It's electronic music, it's music I actually listen to. How else would people discover unknown music if no one shared it? It's been a bit dead around here, thought it would be cool to go with more unknown stuff than the usual. Just seems strange that if I was sharing a bunch of music that is more known, that would be fine. But sharing unknown music from folks who I happen to have become friends with online means there's some ulterior motive behind it. If someone else here knew someone who was making some good electronic music, I'd wanna hear it. Aren't we all just promoting electronic music we love, listen to, and want to support here? If we know the person at all, we're not allowed to share their music even if we love it? It just seems strange. If I was talking about The Prodigy or Aphex Twin or Autechre I would still be promoting music. It's all the same, music we love and want to share. It's not like I'm sharing my cousin's shitty amateur punk polka band here. These are electronic producers from all over the world and I've mostly shared other people's music here. Sure I made a couple of posts about my new album release back in September. I did respond to Your Name Here earlier about what I did to promote my album since he was trying to figure out how to get his music out to a bigger audience and thought it may help him. But I can't help it if no one else wanted to share anything here the last couple of months and I tried to keep the thread alive by sharing some folks' music.

Looking back on some older, but still pretty damn good live releases...
The Prodigy released World's On Fire Live CD/DVD (or Blu-ray) a few years ago, which features some live only exclusive tracks/alternate versions.
The Chemical Brothers did the same with their live release called Don't Think.
If you go back even further, Underworld released Everything, Everything as well as a dozen or more awesome live collections with lots of rare and unreleased material.
Leftfield has a live album called Tourism.
Justice's Access All Arenas and A Cross The Universe (prefer Access All Arenas, they really chop up and mix up their songs more)
Atari Teenage Riot's Riot In Japan 2011.
Meat Beat Manifesto's Live '05 accompanying Travelogue Live '05 DVD.
Amon Tobin's ISAM Live CD/DVD as well as a few live recordings released online, his Foley Room Live In Brussels and Ninja Tune Takeover ones are pretty damn good.
And we all know Daft Punk's Alive.

Iamamiwhoami's Concert In Blue and Animal Collective's Live At 930 are some good recent ones.

I'm trying to think if I forget any other good ones...

Its more specific record labels than particular artists when it comes to house.

Record labels such as Junior Boys Own, Nervous Records, Strictly Rhythm, Happy Records (obscure Detroit label), Easy Street Records, Nu-Soul....and many more.
just a ton of really interesting sexy atmospheric soulful electronic music. I love crate digging and finding obscure gems.
Obviously House music came back in a MAJOR way in Europe in last few years..all this new stuff is influenced by the music from the labels i mentioned above.

Totally different genre of electronica but another label i been getting into hugely is James Lavelle from Unkle's MO WAX records
was so cool in the 90s.

Its a mixture of Trip Hop, Hip Hop, Techno, Jazz...DJ Shadow released Entroducing on it, Dr Octagon was on it many more.
I dont think its around anymore...but i picked up an AMAZING compilation of the labels music from about 1992-1996.

its the best weed music ever..stunning.

@neorev (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=584)

I'm sorry it has taken so long to respond to you, between the holidays and the chaos of my job and several personal things going on, plus I am writing my own stuff and when i get on a writing streak it can last for days at a time.
The other reason is when I comment on somebody else's art, I don't want to just listen to it once and make a statement that I will later regret or that I didn't say enough about. For example I am a huge Radiohead fan a lot of times when I hear their new music for the first time it doesn't have much of an effect on me I have to listen to it several times and then eventually I can't stop listening to it.
The body of work you and Aquila have done is impressive as well, I like your choices of instrumentation, your mixes and your arrangements. There is one part in the song "Short Fuse" that to me is a little reminiscent of Depeche Mode and I mean that as a compliment because I am a huge Depeche Mode fan. I opened this thread to broaden my electronic music mind, to see what others are listening to and to hopefully find something new that I can discover and listen to. I find that the NIN fans are very astute music lovers that don't fall into the pitfalls of the cliche or mediocre efforts by artists who create simply for profit. The community here at ETS tends to be interested in artists who create music for the love of the art.
Both you and Aquila are the type of artists who create art and thats what it should be all about. It doesn't matter if you are doing rock, electronic or some other style if you are doing it to create your own style, your own sound and you put it out there for others to enjoy you are contributing to the artistic community. I look at music the same way I would look at a Picasso or a Van Gough and ask myself what is the artist trying to convey and it may not be easy to understand at first glance you may have to take some time to discover the message but once that art speaks to you it becomes a part of you and the gift of creation is now passed on to somebody else. That is the greatest thing that art and music can do.
You and Aquila both have that gift of creation and that art you are both putting out there is something that music desperately needs more creative people and artists music doesn't need more pop stars or reality tv stars.
I really enjoyed the music you have both created and it is now apart of my music library that will be in my regular rotation and please let me know when either of you guys are releasing new music. Your music is very cool and I recommend it to anybody that is looking for something new.

I think you're gonna make me cry. I know Aquila may get to bawling. :)
But thanks for those amazing and kind words. It truly means a lot to me. And don't worry, I'm on Aquila's case to put out some more tunes. He definitely has another solid batch of songs leftover. I'll be sure to share your words with him.

I actually did release something new on New Years Day. I ended up doing a last minute live performance on an online radio streaming concert for the Electro-Music.com community. People in the chat who know me started bugging me to jump on and do a set, so I did. I performed a couple of unreleased tracks that were a little different from my usual stuff. When I saw the response was very positive in the chat and forums, I decided to throw a few tracks together and put it up the very next morning. It's kinda like my little concept mini-album or EP or whatever. I'm known for doing aggressive stuff aimed at blasting the crap out of it live, so I was a little nervous how folks would react to a change of pace. It is up for sale now on digital music stores and streaming sites, but if you go to my Bandcamp you can name your own price (there's no minimum, so if you enter "0" it's free!) and download in the format of your choice. I like to give folks choices when experiencing music and I know during these tough times some don't have the luxury spending money on music. I've been there myself. So I always like to have a free option.

Remember BT and e.g. "This Binary Universe"? Check this out, new album and special USB version with 48bit (!) WAVs and 4K videos, cool. I'd be interested in those "innovative techniques and (per BT) “insane” amounts of new sound design modalities".

I was about to post that video!

This Binary Universe is one of my all-time favorite albums, and while I loved If the Stars Are Eternal..., this new song feels like an even more authentic successor.

"Artifacture" utterly eviscerated my skull with its beauty. Nobody's music moves me quite the way BT's music does. I am so crazy excited for the rest of the album.

If there are any bedroom producers or striving electronic music artists on here, a very well known Prodigy fan community is about to host an original music competition very soon. This will be our sixth volume in the Music From The Jilted Generation series. We are celebrating the upcoming new Prodigy album No Tourists and the 15th anniversary of our very first compilation released back in 2003. So if you got some original electronic music you would like to submit, shoot me a PM and I'll connect you with where you should go. Deadline will be sometime in mid-October with winners announced on November 1st with the Prodigy album dropping on the 2nd. :)

Only release of theirs I ever got was Orbus Terrarum back in 1995. Always liked it b/c it served a purpose as one of the few ambient albums I've ever owned. So I would use it when studying, needing to zone out, sleep, etc.

Any thoughts on "The White Room" by The KLF?

I've got the UK vinyl and the Canadian CD (and probably the single most listened to album/CD that I own... and oldest too, terms of I bought it probably in '93/'94 after the cassette I had of it died after buying that in '91).

So yeah, I like it, what about you?

(I prefer the UK vinyl due to the 'o' mixes and that seems to contribute to a better overall flow of the album...)

Camille

^^ Yeah, I'm a KLF fan. I guess the album that does it for me is Chill Out, it's quite wonderful. The chart toppers were great and all but it's the original pure trance versions and the more ambient tunes that I'm drawn to.
This is a good book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Turn-Up-Strobe-Ian-Shirley/dp/190945463X/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1568056817&sr=1-7 if you are interested in how the JAM's / Timelords and KLF came to be, how they made and promoted the music and the scene surrounding them during that time. Contains quite a bit of information on The Orb too.

For the longest time I thought "Chillout" came out after "The White Room", they just sounded so different... but "Chillout" certainly has its ambient place in my life. Cool about the book, might check that out. Have you read their "2023 (https://www.amazon.com/2023-Trilogy-Justified-Ancients-Mu/dp/0571338089)" or "The KLF: Chaos, Magic and the Band who Burned a Million Pounds (https://www.amazon.com/KLF-Chaos-Burned-Million-Pounds/dp/1780226551)" by John Higgs?

I haven't read 2023 but I had a go at Chaos.... I didn't like it. Too much of the author trying to match the KLF's decisions to discordianism and all that stuff. Not for me. I thought it was going to be a music biography.

MrLobster

I thought it was going to be a music biography.

Heh, yeah... no. :)

For me it was weird, I got into The KLF and then I was handed a book by the author that inspired them a year or two later... but it wasn't the book that inspired them (Illuminatus!), so I didn't become aware of their literary history until a few more years... and then I started to laugh a lot. Granted, by that time I was also already into Discordianism and the pieces of the puzzle finally made a picture that made sense to me. Sure, they already had a very profitable career previous to The KLF, but was their trancentral (which I maintain should be spelt TRANCEntral to make the silly joke more apparent, but the S.S.L. can still remain hidden) that kept me around.

Related; I'd really like one of the Cauty riot happy face riot shields... really want one... but they are considered art and the import taxes to Canada on it were going to be almost as much as the item itself... I had to decline. For now.

Yes, the riot shields are cool. That's a shame about the taxes you would need to pay. I wonder if them now being made in an open edition will lower used prices (i.e ebay)?
I've got a couple of signed Cauty prints. I must remember to do something with them.
