View Full Version : Disturbing Moments in Film

There's scenes in some movies that I think might have scarred me a bit. The first thing that I remember truly bothering me was the crunching sound that happened when Darth Vader psychically choked that guy in Star Wars. I think lately I've become fascinated with seeing some of the most fucked up stuff in film... still, there's some things that on some level I wish I had never seen.

1. The ending of Audition: This still bothers me to even think about it. Still, brilliant.

2. The home invasion scene in Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer: I saw this movie when I was too young, but that scene made me feel completely insane, and I walked away from the movie thinking "oh no, it's so easy to kill nice people." Forever fucked me up.

3. The worms in the ears in Star Trek 2: I have an ear touching phobia thing and I don't know where it came from... This is my best guess.

4. The muskrat killing in Cannibal Holocaust: none of the fake gore in the movie even comes close to touching how awful that shit is

5. The opening to Evil Dead Trap: A naked woman is tied to the wall and grotesquely tortured, nipples cut off, standard shit... then the knife slowly punctures her eyeball while she screams her head off. I almost walked out of the theater immediately after about five minutes. I guess I'm glad I stuck around to see how ridiculous the movie really is, but I remember thinking to myself "well, if that happens in the first five minutes, I have no desire to see any more of this bullshit."

6. The dude in the pressure chamber in License to Kill: When his head blows up like a balloon and exploded, I literally screamed and ran away crying. I was 9.

7. The frostbite scene in Men Behind the Sun: I don't like to think about this.

8. Cremmaster: I don't remember what it was, but it bothered the hell out of me. It was probably really weird.

one comes to mind instantly, from a movie i hated:

the ending of fat girl.

others:
the final scene of sleepaway camp, an unexpected twist after a mostly silly slasher flick
the majority of antichrist (which i 'enjoyed')
the final scene of troll 2. obviously an awful movie, but as a child, the thought of mother turning into muck and eaten by goblins was fucking terrifying.
the rape scene in the original last house on the left.
the damn crab walk in the re-released version of the exorcist.
pretty much all of julien donkey boy (which i hated)
the ending of the brood.
zelda in pet sematary.

Let's see,

Antichrist (well, the entire film was disturbing but one of my favorites).
Irreversible (that rape scene is just something I don't want to see again no matter how much I think it's a great film)
The ending in Audition (great movie but I will never want to see that again, scared the shit out of me)
The reveals in both Oldboy and Lady Vengeance

That's all I can think of for the moment.

Bathtub scene in August Underground's Mordum.

Those three movies made me question if I should watch horror movies anymore.

I just read a plot synopsis for Mordum. I've seen some fucked up stuff in my day, but I don't think I ever need to see this movie.

It sounds even worse than Carver... There's a scene in that movie where a guy is handcuffed to a rail in a bathroom, has a toilet full of maggots and shit emptied on his head, then has his testicle squished with a wrench.
Fuck that movie.

A Serbian Film was pretty fucked-up. Stupid, too.

Gozu was kind of ridiculous, but certainly Audition is up there: I had to lie down when I first saw it.

Personally I was disturbed by the ending of There Will Be Blood, I didn't like that at all.

I remember I ran from the movie theater crying when Sean Connery gets killed in The Untouchables: I was around 10.

The rape scene in irreversible was horendous.

This was listed so many times, I got curious and watched it. I don't understand French and there were no subtitles in this clip so I had no idea he was ANALLY raping her. For 8 minutes. But I was thinking, meh, this is just typical gratuitous violent sex and then I kept wondering why she didn't get up and RUN after, but then we would have missed the truly disturbing "beat the living shit out of her and pound her face into the concrete" scene. Wtf.

When I was a kid, all that breath-holding and swimming in "The Poseidon Adventure" disturbed me a lot. Especially if you're trying to save Shelley Winters.

Edit: On second thought, what's most disturbing is how many actors potentially wrecked their careers with that flick:

zelda in pet sematary.

That was my first thought when I read the title of this thread!!! I was a kid when I saw that movie, and Zelda scarred the shit out of me. She still does.
(trivial fact: the director wanted to make Zelda really disturbing, so they cast a boy to play the part. And it's not something you pick up on when you watch the movie, but it just throws the role off in a strange way. It's brilliant.)

-In Aliens, the first cocooned woman they find who is begging to be killed.

-The Exorcist: spider walk down the stairs, and most of the movie in general.

In a non-horror, more of a serious note:

-The ending of Dancer in the Dark

-The second half of the documentary Dear Zachary. Christ, it still haunts me.

Any rape scene is shocking so i'll omit them on this list.

1. The hammer scene in 'Kill List'

2. The Fire Extinguisher scene in 'Irreversable'

3. The end of 'When The Wind Blows' (I know but i was young..)

4. The introduction of Jar Jar (The Phantom Menace)

5. The dog pound scene in 'The Thing'

6. The beginning of Alien3 ..and the realisation that all that i went through with the charaters of Aliens didn't count for shit.

-In Aliens, the first cocooned woman they find who is begging to be killed.

oh yeah, this really screwed me up. I remember very clearly sitting in a hotel room with the babysitter, and I was watching something with the Muppets on TV. I think she wanted to see what was on Spectravision (which back then they would have in some hotels, as like a pay per view service to watch movies that were still in the theaters, but you got a five minute preview before you had to pay). So she flips the channel, and it goes from Big Bird right to the woman cocooned on the wall screaming "KILL ME!!!!" before the thing pops out of her chest and they hit her with the flame thrower... and back to Big Bird. It took me a while to figure out what the hell happened there. At the time it just seemed like The Muppets got REALLY fucked up for a second.

It's not really a film, but my husband watched a series of programmes looking into the origin of horror creatures, like werewolves, frankenstein etc and there was one on vampires which I didn't think would bother me particularly. However it went into great documentary style detail into Vlad the Impaler and showed how ignorant I was of the reality of that situation. I honestly thought impaling was just sticking a spike in someone's chest and putting them up on it to die slowly, but the reality was much much worse, like sticking blunt sticks up anuses and vaginas and having them slowly slide down, and he did this to kids as well and just thousands of people. It was something I was much happier not knowing

Highly Psychological

Any films to do with Schitzophrenia usually disturb me. I end up getting paranoid misdiagnosing myself. Fearing that im going insane.

Also.......MYSTERIOUS SKIN with Josepth Gordon Levitt, By Greg Araki. Now that is a disturbing film. A guy who thinks he has been abducted by aliens finds out his memories are just a blanket to cover up his repressed childhood sexual abuse from his school gym teacher.
Sounds depressing but its really good.

Gore is not scary. Gory movies do nothing for me. Agreed its all in the mind. But some brutal death sequences do scare me.

I found Hostel very disturbing. The whole approach of being lured by strangers i found creepy. And the whole sexual violence thing was deep.
The most disturbing aspect of it was that the slayings were so realistic, the people being butchered sound like they are really struggling.
The scene is Hostel 2 was the worst where she is hung upside down, the film was acctually banned in many countires due to how traumatic that scene was.

I didnt enjoy watching Hostel i thought the story was interesting but there was something flawed with it, and i came out at the end thinking Eli Roth was a complete massive twat. I still do.

Agreed although there was a lot that annoyed the hell out of me in that movie to the point I thought Fassbender deserved whatever he got really.

The death of Lambert in Alien still freaks me out, not least because it's A) Off Screen and B) Implied that she she may have actually been raped by the alien creature.

The dogs in The Thing... that whole scene, the dog trying desperately to chew his way out of the holding pen to escape the monster is also haunting.

the ending of fat girl.

The ending to Fat Girl is what actually made me like the movie. I think of that entire film as disturbing. The whole
twenty-two year old guy trying to take a fifteen year old's virginity, and the graphic detail which that is shown was just
unnerving to me. IFC ran a documentary on sex in films, and one of the people they interviewed referred to the movie as a horror film
and I completely agree. The middle of the movie drags on quite a bit, but the ending is so jarring I had to rewind it and watch it again to make sure
I saw what I actually saw. As the credits rolled I thought to myself this filmmaker is dangerous. I loved it.

I have 120 Days of Sodom, I was fine till the circle of shit.
I have both Irreversible and Audition but have yet to get the courage to watch them.

Sutekh
05-20-2012, 09:09 AM
Audition isnt that bad, the violence is pretty mild and tastefully shot. It has a levity that prevents it from being too gruelling

Men behind the sun is probably the most shocking thing i've seen, lilya 4 ever is brutally depressing.

As a kid, I was completely traumatized by the following:
- Wrath of Khan: the ear worm (I still have nightmares about that)
- The Black Cauldron: Disney does skelettons
- The Dark Crystal (I don't know, I was just scared of the puppets I think)
- finding out what Soylent Green was

I think the most disturbing things, to me, that I've seen so far were:
- Irreversible: the rape scene, oddly enough because the scene that precedes it is a lot more gorish
- Signs: the home video (yes, I know nobody finds that movie scary, but it gave me nightmares)
- Antichrist: the scissors
- The Exorcism of Emily Rose: all the flashbacks, God!
- The Cove: the dolphin massacre
- The Mist: the end

You really should watch it, even if you already know the ending, if only for the cgi and the incredible mid-section of the movie. It's not a conventional horror movie, I can only think of one scene that's truly gore-ish, but the set-up, the characters, the build-up and then that ending... I thought it was a supberb movie.

It's hard to say for me if it improves on the original story's ending, which was depressing in an entirely different way - more of a hollow, defeated sort of downer ending, rather than the sick, insane hell that the movie offered up. I refuse to watch this movie now because of the ending. I've lost my ability to cope with that kind of thing I guess. Or maybe I never should have had that ability to begin with.

Well, just don't read the book then. Compared to how disturbing and unnerving that novel is, the film adaptation is a farce.

They also made a movie based on the real story starring Ellen Page and Catherine Keener called An American Crime. It debuted on Showtime, but I think it turned out to be way more fucked up than they expected it to be, so it basically only aired a couple times and then went straight to dvd. It's a much better film than The Girl Next Door, but it's really draining and it'll fuck up your day.

All that said, I'd actually call the book The Girl Next Door a very good book. It's very upsetting and authentically disturbing, but it's also really fascinating and well written. It moves beyond being a blatant exploitation piece, and in some ways it's a general mediation on the loss of innocence. I'd recommend it if you can deal with reading something that will probably make you feel terrible.

Yeah the orgy scene has always creeped me out, but the whole movie just fucks me up even more than The Shining. The fact that all of the masked attendants are high ranking officials in New York City, and know who Tom Cruise's character is, where he lives, who his family is and so on. I don't know what it was about seeing the guy in the corner that scared the shit out of me (and yes, I know *why* he's there) but whatever it was, it worked!

The TV scene from the original The Ring.

In my opinion the remake ruined it, because they didn't realise it was the other-worldliness of Sadako that created the fear, not just a little girl with an evil look on her face.

Watching Eraserhead while wearing headphones might be one of the most disturbing things I've ever experienced. That atmosphere... It takes you over. Makes you feel like Henry.

I watched Eraserhead for the first time last year. I kept waiting for something to jump out and say boo. I wanted something to jump out and say boo so it could defuse the tension.

I saw Eraserhead a few years ago on a late Halloween night. Fucked me up. The whole film was disturbing but absolutely brilliant. Lynch was clearly creating something new.

Those two scenes in Antichrist. If you've seen the movie, you know what i'm talking about.
Goddamn.

I just saw Nicolas Winding Refn's Bleeder and while it's more of a dramatic film about adulthood. There is a scene that is absolutely disturbing. It involves a dude being tied with his hands up in the air as his girlfriend's brother pays a guy $90 and a pack of cigarette to shoot his HIV-positive blood into a syringe so he can inject it into his sister's boyfriend. That is fucked up!!!

the majority of antichrist (which i 'enjoyed')

I just watched this for the first time thanks to the Barnes and noble Criterion sale. I'm impressed.

The noises are the scariest thing about ring... When she sees the polaroid of her warped face... Urgh

The remake didn't understand what was good about the original

have any of you guys seen a horror movie called I Saw the Devil? A friend recommended a long string of Korean horror movies for me to check out, saying I should "start with that one, and then work my way into the more messed up stuff."

Umm.... if the other movies on this guy's list are significantly more fucked up than this, I'm not sure I can handle them... and I thought I'd seen some pretty fucked up movies.

I have and i agree it was rather intense. I told a girl i work with about and she said i fucked up her whole night after watching it.

Its not all that bad. Better than the US version, a bit creepier but it shouldn't ruin your day.

Not so much a "disturbing scene" but i think this trailer is a great combo of disturbing music/imagery...

I think the one scene that scared me the most when I was a child was the one in Ghostbusters II, when they were in the subway tunnel, then there was the ghost subway running through Winston and then suddenly, they were surrounded by a group of undead (or whatever they were, I watched the movie about ten times and always looked away after the first time).

I just watched the full uncensored version of A Serbian Film. I thought it was stupid.... and I hate everyone involved in the making of it.

1. This i find to be high art. Lynch is SO good at creating tension.

2. I saw this as a child and it STILL fucks me up!

3. And good god, THIS shit.

It takes a LOT to scare me, but those last two...i got a visceral reaction looking at the clips just now.

4.ALL of S&Man

I made a thread for S&Man (pronounced Sandman,) but i guess NO ONE here has seen it. It's DEFINITELY worth it. It's gimmicky, but the gimmick is EXTREMELY well done, and subtle enough to really work.

5. Pretty much all of 3 Extremes

6. This is the most disturbing thing ive EVER seen.

I don't care much for horror films with few exceptions. I watched Videodrome, and although it disturbed me and I found a lot of the ideas in it pretty well ahead of it's time I was put off by the gore quite a bit. Same with Scanners. Cronenberg had disturbing down to a science then. The Dead Zone seems pretty PG in comparison, but in anyone else's canon it would be pretty out there. I have no problem saying I like more of David's recent and less shocking fare, especially A History Of Violence. Thrillers are as close to horror I can feel comfortable with. None of the Alien movies for example, register with me much as horror films. The gore is rather understated (except in the fourth, which was pretty over the top, well with everything else) and saved for only the most tense moments. The first is a thriller, the 2nd a (fucking great) action film, the third a drama about loss and isolation, and the fourth is well...a horror film.

This is such a cliche but the most disturbing movie I've ever seen and also really enjoyed was Marathon Man. A few scenes in particular (other than the legendary "is it safe" sequence) scared the hell out of me. It's probably the best pure thriller I've seen considering I've not really seen anything that proceeded it like Hitchcock. Dustin has been able to bring emote real terror in his performances, like a male equivalent of a great scream queen. It's not thriller nor horror, but the bathtub scene in Rain Man is also a good example of this. I have yet to see the original Straw Dogs though.

Straw Dogs is a great movie, and I was actually surprised to enjoy the remake. They changed it enough that it was almost a completely different movie. And I read Marathon Man ages ago, both the book and movie are excellent.

The character of Pumpkinhead in the Pumpkinhead films has gotten under my skin since childhood. Also when I saw Eraserhead for the first time the baby disturbed me/made me depressed. Other than that I haven't been disturbed by too much.
