Hello All,

I remember Perchee used to run all of the earlier mix exchanges back in the day, but since the server shit the bed I haven't seen another one of these pop up.
I was always really interested in the idea, but never got involved unfortunately, so I'd like to bring it back!

So from what I remember (feel free to correct me.):

-Anyone that's interested posts in this thread.
-We decide on a theme
-The user creates a mix tape/disc revolving around that theme.
-Everyone gets paired up and swaps/mails out their mixes!
-Profit!

-Everyone that opts in will be assigned someone to send their mix to.
-Each mixer is to send a physical copy of their mix* (Optical or Flash Memory, no obnoxious formats please.)
*If you're fanatically opposed to physical media, it's permissible to send a digital mix.
However I'm sure it'd be appreciated if you sent something in lieu, like a card, poker chip, pygmy marmoset, whatever.
-Being part of a NIN community, there's no need to make them or other obvious artists (Nothing Records, etcetera) a part of you mix.
-If you fail to send your mix, you will not be included in future exchanges.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Definitely in. I participated in three or four of these. I really enjoyed all the different interpretations of the themes and different tastes that everyone had.

I remember LiquidCalm sent me a cardboard pencil holder from M3/4 that I just thought was so cool and his original music. I still use it and still listen to the music. Someone else gave me a toy for my dog which she still uses two or three years later. Not that it's about the little gifts, but they are sweet and gives you an idea of what a broad group of people hang around here.

I think you got all the "rules" however I think whoever organizes (you?) just PMs each person who they send to. It's not a partner swap. X sends to Y, Y sends to Z, Z sends to X.

The themes I participated in that I can remember were love, crime, and animals.

I meant mix tape as a turn of phrase, hell, I don't even know where I'd find a cassette player in this day and age.
Will specify in the first post, OPTICAL MEDIA IN THE FORM OF A COMPACT DISC, or like you say, at the very least a flash drive with MP3's.



Anyway, I'll update the first post later in the day, and I guess we'll go from there. Exciting stuff!

I think it was more, if you send MP3s via the internet, you have to send something else through the mail. Something physical has to be exchanged. However, if someone signs up and then doesn't send ANYTHING, then they are forbidden from future exchanges. There was a list of people who cannot participate, but I can't find it using WayBackMachine. Unless someone actually got a backup of the old board, I suppose it's lost forever.

Right. I totally recognise the importance of getting joyful goodness in the post. It just feels redundant to send a CD - although I like Botley's USB idea. I'd rather spend the postage on sending you jam, tea, and locks of the Queen's hair.

Hence why I originally said "+ goodies in the post", retarded humans who didn't read my post properly and thought I was anti-mail.

Just updated the first post, give me a shout if you think I've missed anything.
I say we give it a week or two before we get this started, in case there are some irregulars interested.
What would you consider a realistic time frame for compiling your mix, then dispatching it? Say a fortnight or a month?

As a general rule, would you guys rather a USB stick or CD, or are you completely indifferent? Both have their advantages and their drawbacks, I can come up with some interesting DIY packaging ideas for both.

I personally like CDs.. keeping it 1999 in my head yo. plus it keeps a limit on what is sent... 4gigs of songs aren't gonna get listened to, whereas a 60 min cd will go in my car for months on repeat.

Likewise, I think keeping to a CD limits the time-frame of the mix to an hour (Or there about's).
But if you want to send a USB choc-full of pictures of your stamp collection and your Mum's prized pumpkin pie, then that's cool I guess.

Oh wait, just because you send a stick doesn't give you license to send 100 songs. The whole point of a mix TAPE is that you have to be thoughtful on what songs you put within the limit of a "tape". If we're mixing up the media, perhaps we add a rule that the song limit is 60 minutes.

I wasn't planning on sending an insane amount of music. I think the last two times, (well, at least the last time) I sent two CDs, and I was going to limit myself to that this time as well. My plan was to send a USB with the CDs so the person doesn't have to go through the trouble of ripping the music. Definitely going to keep it around 2 hours, though. (160 mins. max)

You can do whatever you like with it. I took some and posted them on my Facebook because I was sad that I'd never see it again. I sent along a flash drive, too, didn't I? That had all the songs in order, as well as some other things. I felt like it would be a good idea in case something like a CD drive wasn't working, heh. I'm really glad you like it, though. :D:D
