I noticed we now had a "Shitty movies" thread to go with our "Shitty music" thread, so I thought I'd see if maybe we could start one of these.

I'll start us off with Vanquish.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT5wg51JB8w

It looks like the typical futuristic shooter with little substance, and it really is. But it's done in a way that makes it apparent that they did it that way on purpose (which is fine, because sometimes that works). There are a lot of things that it could have done without, though. For example, I've never played a game that actually punished the player for using melee attacks. Basically, you have this super-powered DARPA weaponized armor and it overheats when you perform certain actions, leaving you completely unable to use it while your machine takes 10-ish second to cool off (you can move around fire your weapons, and evade attacks, but that's it). Any time you use a melee attack, whether it's one punch or several, your suit instantly overheats,. You can never jump - not even off of ledges. You get a special prompt when you're able to use jets to jump up or down. You move at a fixed pace, with the exception of using your suit's boosters to powerslide in any direction - which is cool, but it's just another thing you can't use when your suit's overheated. Also - You can easily beat the game in less than 3 hours.

There's just a whole list of things I could go on about that I don't like about this game. ESPECIALLY the credits. Holy christ. It uses an interesting mini-game idea, but then it just drags on...and on...and ON...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twaqt9WlMpQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twaqt9WlMpQ)

It's fun as a shooter. The dialogue is all corny hardcore space marine talk, and story is like 24 had a baby with Red Dawn and took place in Halo, but those things actually make the game somewhat entertaining to watch on your first playthrough. You'll absolutely get a laugh out of it. They could have fixed a few of the mechanics and made this into a fun little game I'd play again for kicks. But after beating it twice for the sake of the trophies alone, I don't know that I'll ever feel the need to play it again.

I don't even think I got the pleasure of playing that one. :P

Here's an example of "so bad, it's good," though. I've seen a friend play this once and he's sold it since then, and now apparently it's impossible to find for less than $200.

There was a Batman Forever game I had for my Game Gear back in the day that was absolutely horrendous. I couldn't even get past the first level. I found out later you literally had to jump through the floor of the next level to get up there, which was done with some incredibly stupid button combination. I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it.

This game right here was the biggest piece of shit I've played in a VERY long time. The only joy I got out of this game was the easter egg that you get when you fail against the mechanical worm and trading this piece of shit in.

Shit controls, shit story (His wife goes missing and you're in a town taken over by an army of sorts and you find out your bionic arm IS YOUR WIFE! OOOOHHHHHH) and shit music. The only decent thing about this game really is the voice acting from Spencer isn't too bad.

A major problem with this game is that it's got the same invisible wall that can kill you like in Superman 64 (as mentioned above). You try and swing into a part of town and you hit this barrier you're not supposed to go past and to tell you not to go past this mark it's radiation that can kill you. Well just get out of the radiation right? Well no, it only gives you about a half a second to get out of radiation or you're fucked and you got to do that whole level again.

Also, here's a video the of the easter egg.

As a ten year old i remember trying my damndest to actually like it and failing all over the place...
Did anybody play that first sonic game that came out this generation? My god that was fucking terrible. I actually liked the sonic adventure games but that one was unforgivably awful...

I do remember playing batman forever on my genesis and liking it... it had that mortal kombat image capture thing going on, right? Dont think i got very far...

Voiced by Faith No More's Mike Patton no less. Eh I remember being on a Bionic Commando binge when this came out and thought it was pretty average but not the most terrible game I'd played. Capcom had a double whammy with this and Dark Void in such a short space of time.

I disagree completely about Vanquish. I loved it, and outside of my complaints about it being too short, I thought the gameplay was amazingly well polished. You could also take mastery of that game to a crazy level, and it provides post game challenges that actually put you to the test. Sure, the plot is dumb, and the dialog is a joke, but the actual gameplay and action was unique (and authentically exciting), tight, and fast paced.

I also think the Bionic Commando game was really underrated. It's hard, and the lack of checkpoints is frustrating, but the game mechanics are solid. Yeah, the radiation was frustrating, and it sort of screwed up the way it encouraged you to search around for collectibles, but unless you were hunting around for hidden stuff you didn't run into those walls.

I think the most disappointing game I've picked up lately has been Hunted: The Demon's Forge (http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/hunted-the-demons-forge)
It looked so promising, and I was looking for an action/rpg designed for coop gameplay. The game turned out to be dreary, repetitive, and stupid. Worse yet, the gameplay is clunky and glitchy crap, and the whole point (the two player coop) is ruined by terrible imbalance and poor teamwork mechanics. Add to that the fact that the game is frustratingly difficult and punishing even on easy difficulties. I want my 15 bucks back.

Also, I was pretty let down by FEAR 3. The coop gameplay in that had a great premise, but it's poorly executed, and the level design is astonishingly bad. It's also completely tame and the least scary "horror" game I've played since Resident Evil 5.

Oh yeah, and Sumioni for the PS Vita is bullshit.

It WAS tight and fast-paced, I'll give it that. There weren't any times where I felt that anything was dragging. But there were so many little things that stopped me from really enjoying the game. E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy from steam, they tried so hard to push it right in the middle of this flash-in-the-pan cyberpunk revival recently, and it just didn't fit.
The game play just felt super clunky and awkward, the plot (If you could call it that.) was convoluted and confusing as hell.
With the constantly respawning enemies, and the way the gameplay panned out, it just felt like Unreal Tournament with stats.
Guess I was sucked in by it's kinda cool character design and art style, but in my eyes it fell well short of the mark.

Giant Bomb's playthrough of Deadly Premonition is one of the best things ever. Such a bad game.

http://media.teamxbox.com/games/boxart/1106153965.jpg
This is my favorite bad game ever. The AI is god awful (if you are on co-op they cannot handle two people at once, they completely ignore the second person after seeing the first). The plot is horrid, you randomly get revealed important plot points that didn't exist prior to certain cut scenes that were apparently driving motivations for some of the characters. The map editor is terrible. One of the boss fights I beat by crouching under the boss' weapon right in front of him and shot him the face while avoiding all damage. Me and a friend cloned ourselves in co-op, so there were three of us (one just stood there). You fight a Jedi thing too. Who also is a power generator thing. Or something.
The only thing this game had going for it was the weapon upgrade system, but it was really pointless and basically amounted to "now it's stronger! or has a better scope!".
However, I fucking love it for how terrible it is.

At the time, I was really big into trophy hunting so I got the game because a friend of mine said it was good and the trophies were easy.

I was stuck on that damn Bulldog challenge for the longest time, AND the fact that there are collectibles IN A FUCKING OPTIONAL TUTIORAL. Who in their right minds puts collectibles in a tutorial that you can completely skip? Grin does and thank God, they aren't around any more.

The voice actor I thought was decent like I said, but other than that. I fucking hated that game. I did forget to mention the lack of check points too. Doing Commando mode during the the library and a few parts after that was just insane. I was stuck on the library part for at least 4 hours.

I have to agree about Transformers: Beast Wars. I picked this game up for the PC in like '97 or '98 and Was a huge fan of the TV serious, thought the game was gonna be great, and it was balls!!

Now that I think about it, Transformers games are generally terrible. There hasn't really been a memorable TF game.

To the poster above that wrote TMNT for NES, nah I love that game! That game is underrated. People just say it's bad because they can't pass the water level. The game was fresh and unique for it's time, I don't know a TMNT kid who didn't have that game! Considering the NES' limitations, I thought the game was well designed for it's time, sure it's a little odd at times fighting frogs and chainsaw men and moths that literally have nothing at all to do with the Turtles universe, but all in all, it's a good starting game that has a unique feel to it.

If ya want to talk about shitty TMNT games, that 2007 movie tie in was pure trash! Actually, any TMNT after Konami lost their lisence was garbage.
Even TMNT: Re-shelled, oh god... what a horrible horroble fucking remake of an all time classic.

I have never played this and I've seen it loads of times when I go to Gamestop. Even used at $6.99 for the Collector's Edition would I still not bite. Interesting game concept and story but poor, terrible execution and laughable graphics at the year it was released (2008). I have watched reviews and read them and I think this game would be a blast to play since it's so shitty and I'd have a good time laughing my ass off when I'd be playing it. Anyways the cover...

Superman 64 might be the worst game I've ever played. Force Unleashed 2 being another. All the buildup, bought the special edition, and the game ended up being a four hour waste of time. OK so gameplay was "ok" and it was like when you watch a movie that's so bad it's unintentionally hilarious and me and a mate had good times running through it, taking the piss as we went through the whole campaign. Charlie Brooker summed it up perfectly though :

"The game's so desperate to appear grown-up it ends up looking downright ridiculous, like an adolescent straining to grow a whispery little moustache and bragging about how many girls he's fingered"

Ocean made some dreadful ports of Taito games like Rainbow Islands for the NES - I'll never forgive them for making my NES look shittier than my smug Amiga/Atari ST friends machines.

Somebody hacked the rom of the game and altered the character lines.

As a fan of the Bad Boy Pistons, this works on SO many levels.

Haze was a steaming pile.
I really enjoyed the first level, everything was going ok, then the second level was bland, massive, unending drive along with crap controls which got stuck in an endless loop.
then I never played it again.

With all the SNES basketball games, I was half expecting to see this one:

Which would be a massive mistake since THIS GAME WAS FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE.

You can buy this piece of shit on PSN. I got it for free because they were giving it away. I thought I'd try it out and I didn't last 5 minutes playing this piece of shit.

If I had to say this game was a piece of shit or a pile of shit. I'm gonna have to say it's a pile of shit. Just one turd nugget doesn't sum up this game.

[Jurassic Park 16-bit] I could never get through the power station when the T-Rex breaks through, I would always die.

Jesus. There is pretty much one reason in the entire game to use the flash grenade, and that is when the rex comes sniffing around. First played through that game when I was 8, and even then, I'd have to actually make a conscious decision to ever be killed by the rex. For shame, sir.

Although that particular instance is a bad example (seriously, you always died?), that was an insanely difficult game. Lots of blind leaps where the punishment for being unlucky/not knowing the level layout is instant death, and certain enemies were absolute bastards. Not a bad game at all though; if you could stand the difficulty level I'd call it a decent game for the time. Great sound and music, some curious gameplay systems, some of the best graphics on a 16-bit system, and you get to be a freaking velociraptor. Or steroidal deinonychus if you want to be anal.

The sequel, Jurassic Park Rampage Edition, stands up better today because the difficulty's so much lower (much less emphasis on puzzles and blind jumping), and the game's a bit longer. Same gameplay system though.

Bad games... I've never played a Call of Duty demo I enjoyed, and I've tried most of them. I really hate the whole "realism" trend that dominates modern shooters, give me an Unreal or a Half-Life any day of the week.

I was like four when that game came out, I had no fucking clue what I was doing. I've also only completed a handful of games in my entire life. That not being one of them.

This game however I beat, and let me tell you, it was a horrible concept despite the fact it was based off the T2 game. I used a lot of quarters in elementary and middle school playing this bad boy:

Oh the memories, I remember when I was about 6 years old at the bowling alley and they had this game in the arcade right next to Killer Instinct.

I had played the arcade, too! I was six, I think. I only played five minutes. It looked fun, but the gun controller was annoying. I remember the chick with the gun at the side of the cabinet (Kerri Hoskins, who also performed the bikini-clad girls in cages in the game and Sonya Blade in MK3).

I read on IMDb that the "New Order Nation - NON" logo (you can see it on her arm) was a parody of the NIN logo.

I recently completed the game on MAME and it was just hours of stupid, but somewhat fun, shooting stuff fare. It was seizure-inducing at times, though. Did they have to add a flashing effect to every single thing that happened on screen? Damn.

Wikipedia says a sequel was going to be released, with Public Enemy, but was cancelled because the original sold poorly.

They still HAVE one of those at an arcade downtown. Also Lethal Enforcers, which is different from Revolution X by the fact that it's awesome and fun.

If you're talking about the Movieland arcade or whatever it's called on Granville, fuck yeah lol. Made $20 off my friend last year there when he said he could 'take me' in Street Fighter II. Foolish, foolish Jonny. Also...hearing someone say Killer Instinct was out when they were 6 years old just made my back AND hip hurt.

My general opinion, timed missions and levels in games are bullshit! A timed mission can turn what was an otherwise fun game into utter shit.

And it's CRAZY fast. You could kill a morning or an afternoon plowing through it in like, 3 hours. Hell, I have to work in the morning, and I could probably start a new game now and be done with it before I start losing any sleep.

No, never got around to playing that one. But if it forces you to race against a clock, I don’t see myself enjoying that.

I’ve never made a game, so maybe I’m talking out of my ass here, but putting a countdown to “YOU LOSE” in a game these days feels like a lazy and cheap way to ramp up the difficulty. It isn’t fun, it’s just infuriating.
