From Bethesda Studios (Skyrim), new Neo-Victorian stealth game. Giving me a very BioShock meets Assassin's Creed kinda vibe. So obviously I'm stoked as hell. First trailer released today and it blew me away.

Very Keen.

I'm wary of anything that tries to have steampunk influences but this may impress me yet. It's just a very difficult genre to pull off—if they do it well, it could be great. Plus it's always nice to have games on the market that are more adventure than FPS.

This looks like a bland hodgepodge of ideas utilized by other recent games. I like their descriptions in the gameplay trailer, nearly all of which could be dropped into the previews of numerous other titles without sounding out of place.

Though I can understand the impulse, I like one game and so I am interested in continuing to play that same game under the guise of different games, even if it's detrimental to the creative health of the industry.

If my first 'impulse' to something, be it a game or album or movie, was 'well shucks, this is detrimental to the health of the industry!' before giving it a chance then I'd probably fuckin' hang myself. To be honest, my first impulse was 'That looks fun. I want to try it.'. Rudimentary, I know LOL.

ANYWAYS, back to discussing what look like an interesting game by a company that has released games I've enjoyed in the past, I'm pretty pumped on the non-linear approach to battle. I hope there will be different outcomes based on decisions a la Mass Effect.

Yeah but Bethesda games plummet in price quickly I've seen.

When about the 4th or 5th month hits since its release it'll be $30.00 or so probably. RAGE is $20.00 these days and it's not that old at all.

Well one of the main artists behind this was a lead on Half Life 2 if I am not mistaken, which would explain the City 17 vibe that many seem to feel.

Correct! It's developed by Arkane Studios.
They've developed Arx Fatalis (2002) and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (2006) and had a part in Bioshock 2 (2010) development. All of them are really great games in my opinion so I'm eagerly waiting for some gameplay footage.

Meh, if you could afford $40, you could afford $60. For how many people on here that seemingly play a metric ton of video games, make sure your job pays enough to afford it...it is sort of an expensive hobby agreed.

Back on Dishonored, the approximate playthrough time has been announced as around 12 hours if you blaze through it, but possibly up to 24 to see everything. Sounds good to me!

In fairness, 50% is a pretty big mark-up. Twenty bucks is a week's food shopping for me, for example. I probably wouldn't be as much of a gamer as I am if it weren't for the second-hand gaming market.

Sadly, I'll probably be in the 'waiting' crowd here. I'm hoping that with all the buzz Dishonored has been getting, loads of people will buy it, decide they don't like it and trade it in.

Ive spent about two hours with it and im still being slow rolled. I havent gotten to the exciting part yet, and it doesnt hook you in that time like bioshock or infamous or deadspace.

Im sure itll pick up once it gives me the reins but i wish it had more faith in me.

Ive tried being non lethal so far, and ive succesfully not killed about 2/15 enemies... i need to he more patient.

october_midnight

I'm doing the same thing, gonna go through a ghost run. Only thing that pissed me off is the 2nd mission at the end it says I killed one person. Be careful if choking someone out and finding a place to stash their body that you don't do it where it ragdolls off and falls lol. About halfway through now, choked an overseer, Blinked up to a pipe and dropped him...he rolled off, fell about 6 feet to the floor. Directly on his head. If you go to their body after and aim at them, if they're dead it won't say (unconscious)...this guy didn't, I zoomed in and saw blood near his head and was like 'oh fuck.' LOL

So I think that's what happened to me in the 2nd mission. After beating it, gonna go back to replay that mission and be insanely careful (though you don't get to keep any powers collected/boosted...my Blink can shoot me like half a block now that it's Level 2). Then once that achievement's in the bag, I'm gonna get a bit more bloodthirsty in the next playthrough haha...

I think you'd be doing yourself an immense disservice if you're trying to go through doing a "perfect" run the first time through. In a game with so many possibilities, I'm not going to ruin the game for myself by trying to ace it on the first try. That's a quick way to get really sick of a game and not only not see the things you ought to see, but flat-out stop enjoying it. No thanks. I'm playing it like a game and sticking to the decisions I make.

I know "emergent gameplay" is a bit of a buzz word these days, but just roll with the punches! Have fun! See if you can't break the game. I'm about to fire it up for the first time and Rock Paper Shotgun's quick little "judged" feature on it advised that I play it on hard, roll with the punches, and disable objective indicators (to encourage exploration). You're damn right that's what I'm doing!

I'm about three and a half hours in, still on the first mission (High Overseer Campbell) and holy balls do I love this game so far. I'm trying desperately to ignore my usual "explore every single thing and proceed once I'm satisfied" sort of style to give myself more options for the next play through, and that's been tough, but when things happen I'm definitely rolling with the punches. Playing on Hard, the moments when I'm spotted and get a legion of dudes after me is definitely an adrenaline-packed moment, that's for sure. I upgraded Blink all the way pretty much first thing. Takes some getting used to, especially with the 360's horrible dead zone on its analog sticks, but I'm smooth like butter now.

One minor critique: When Blink changes its cursor to be an arrow, I wish it also changed color or something as well. It'd be helpful.

I've killed more dudes than I'd've liked, but again, rolling with the punches. The pistol is a hell of a "oh god" kind of weapon. I fear it'll be too easy to rely on sleeping darts, hopefully I get better at forcing myself to innovate in combat.

In the first mission I already wish I could get back on the boat so I can go upgrade my sword thing.

Wretchedest
10-12-2012, 12:13 AM
Is there a new game plus or a way toplay missions fully powered? Would be tits.

But the FUCKING COSTUME BALL was awesome!

Also in one mission:

the one where you assassinate the regent, At one point I deduced, from the empty audio machine in the com tower, that the regent had a confession somewhere. I figured it was in his safe. I scoured the map and couldn't figure out the combo, even after killing the regent. So I sat there and counted the safe all the way from 0 to 93X (it had to be a fucking 900 number, seriously) until it just opened. and BEHOLD! I was right, it was a confession and I slipped that shit into the propaganda machine for GLORY!)

Skyrim is a game that youll keep coming back too, its not something you can swallow whole. It is VERY similar to dishonored. Mass effect is heavy indeed. This is a great game with lots of room for improvement. Its a bit glitchy sometimes too but its deep and enjoyable.

Wretchedest
10-14-2012, 12:41 PM
I gave up on being nonlethal pretty early, since my chaos level was already high. Playing through nonlethal now...

I hagve to say the second playthrough is so much better, when you know where everything is and what your powers do. You understand your options so you don't ponder them too much. I really wish they had a new game plus though. Bone Charms and Runes often end up guiding my path and I'd rather have a playthrough where I move around in a way that sn't based on collecting those...

I liked the ending. there was one mission right before it that felt waaaay to linear, but it redeemed itself with the ending, which neatly wrapped up all of the games thematic elements ina single line of dialogue.

Have any of you played Mark of the Ninja? It's essentially this game, but its about ninjas and its a sidescroller. While I thought the plot here was better, i think the gameplay in Mark was a helluva a lot tighter. I reccomend it to anyone with an X-box and a few bucks to spare.

I am sort of going through the game with being sort of stealthy and killing when I really have to. Once I finish the game and I know where to look for enemies it will be a lot easier to get through stealth wise and get some more of these dam trophies! My brother brought this with him home for the Holidays and told me I would like and should try it. Just started it last night not that far in but should get more playing time tonight and tomorrow. Liking it so far though.... But I can tell being Stealth isn't going to be my strong suit so it'll be interesting to see how my story goes with a high Chaos level since I like fighting lol Though I guess I'll try to be more stealthy as I go on... cool that your story depends on what kind of person you choose to be in the game.

I'm an odd case. I love stealth based games (Splinter Cell, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, etc., and now this) but I suck so hard at them, entirely. I'm trying my hardest to be stealthy but I still get spotted by the random rag tag guy being a loner and it alerts everyone.
