I think there's a fair amount of fans in the forum of this awesome and talented man... love his movies, series, ads, music, even the fuckin hair!
Personally a can't wait for a new movie, "Inland Empire" is 6 years old and i think we deserve a new Lynch film to fuck with our heads...

My favorite Lynch movies:

1. The Elephant Man
2. Lost Highway
3. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
4. Blue Velvet
5. Wild at Heart

Did you guys liked "Crazy Clown Time"? i think is pretty fuckin' sick!

Trent should invite David to be a member of NIN. Not only could he perform live, but he could direct a documentary of the tour.

The scene in the Twin Peaks movie when Laura and Leland are at the dinner table and Leland confronts her about washing her hands....

She gets that fucking look on her face for like 10 minutes. Ugh......

Now THAT is a rough scene.

side note: i listened to Crazy Clown Time all the way through the other day (in anticipation of the new album) and, though a few of the songs were really enjoyable, one or two were SO ANNOYING, one was absolutely terrifying (and not in a fun way, like his movies), and the rest were kind of boring. :/ hoping the new album is a bit better.

Re-watched Lost Highway last night... I made sense of Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire, but I still have no idea about this one. Unless you take him morphing into Pete as something that's physically happening, and that Robert Blake is some sort of demon.

I remember Lynch saying once that the inspiration of "Lost Highway" was O.J. Simpson's case and the fact that someone can forget an horrible thing he did... and i think that says a lot of the movie...

The most confusing one for me still is "Inland Empire"

i've always thought that the part where a place is described where you're sealed in, never knowing when someone is going to walk up behind you an put a bullet in your head (poorly paraphrased because i haven't watched it in a while), is a metaphor for the entire film. he's stuck in a constant cycle of his own, self-created hell.

Just in case someone out there hasn't finished watching Twin Peaks...

But what about the beginning of the film, and how it relates to the end ("Dick Laurent is dead")? Is anything we see in the film actual reality then? I don't know... I see similarities between Bill Pullman's character and Leiland Palmer when he's possessed by Bob in Twin Peaks, so that lead me to come to the conclusion that a lot of the movie may actually be happening.

Looks like Mulholland Drive is getting the Criterion treatment (http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=11468). Pre-ordering that shit as soon as they let me.

Watched Fire Walk With Me last night, criminally underrated movie. Maybe not among Lynch fans, but I genuinely can't believe it was so panned critically. Sort of blows my mind, especially since the last episode of Twin Peaks wasn't exactly a walk in the park either.

I think it was panned because it was a stylistic turning point for Lynch and people didn't know what to think of it.

These days people find it easier to place FWWM in context with Lynch's other work because they can see how the style on display matured into Lost Highway/Mulholland Drive/Inland Empire.

All those comments in the comment section make me facepalm. "OH MY GOD, DAVID! STOP EXPRESSING YOURSELF THROUGH MUSIC, AND MAKE A FILM!" David doesn't have any ideas. He's said this countless times in interviews. He's doing the music thing to keep himself busy while he waits for an idea.

Is his music anywhere near as interesting or as suspenseful as his films?

i like his music. it's got an interesting electronic-tinged blues sound to it. i could do without the heavy processing on most of his vocals, but at least it's not auto-tune. some of the songs are soothing, some are weird, and a couple are creepy as hell. (i'm just speaking of his first album, i haven't heard the new one, yet)

It has "something" that makes it special like most of his work...
The music is minimal most of the times and bases itself on an idea repeated over but that's it's charm!
I think Lynch i able to say a LOT with little musical resources and that's why i like his work ...just feels honest and pure.

Also if you're a fan of the films, the music it's very "referential" to some of the situations in his movies and i even consider that his musical work extends his "movie universe".

Funny, yesterday i saw "Crazy Clown Time" on vinyl and i asked myself the same question (also i already have it on CD)
I think ANYTHING by David is highly collectible and i understand if you want to spend 30 buck on a Vinyl, or just spend 10 bucks on the download...

"David Lynch returns to Twin Peaks as the director begins shooting new footage for the beloved cult series"

For those still craving 'A damn fine coffee and a piece of cherry pie' from the Double R Diner, David Lynch has a surprise in store... and it has taken a mere 25 years to come to fruition.
The cult-film director is gearing up to return to the mill town of Twin Peaks, as the 1990 TV series looks to be getting the conclusion it deserves after two and a half decades in limbo.
The series, which was abruptly cancelled in 1991, made mention of its possible return in an episode, when the spirit of murdered beauty queen Laura Palmer whispered to FBI Agent Dale Cooper that she would see him again in 25 years.

A lot of directors are artists. Lynch has a sort of postmodernist or avant-garde style, which i'm sure you love, but his apparent disdain for convention doesn't make him any more of an artist.

I would disagree with that, some people love the Tranformer movies but I consider Michael Bay to be everything that is wrong with the Hollywood machine. I'm just using Michael Bay as an example but I could easily name ten other directors that make big budget garbage that is more about pleasing the shareholders than it is about art.

I'm just using Michael Bay as an example but I could easily name ten other directors that make big budget garbage that is more about pleasing the shareholders than it is about art.

I have a pretty low bar for what I consider art. Any genuine form of expression or entertainment that employs a technique, than it's art to me. A middle school rendition of Annie, I think that's art. The guy that decorates the grocery store window, i think that qualifies. So being an artist, that's easy. Being good, that's harder.

So despite the fact that these Michael Bay movies are souless Hollywood carnival rides, i do think there is a craft to making them. Armageddon is cheesy as hell, but it's well made. I'd say the same thing about the new Batman movies too.

I can't say the same thing about the Came Back Haunted video, in fact I thought it was a lazy showing, and beneath the dignity of Lynch's reputation. But at the same time, I wouldn't call it "not art", because I think he was trying to express something, even though he didn't appear to try very hard.

Art that is profound enough to affect us so that it changes us; that's rare. I felt this way about Elephant Man. But if I start holding people to that standard, the population of "artists" on this planet is going to shrink by (1/1000). I'll just call call it a masterpiece, by a master craftsman.

At the same time, I share your frustration with what comes out of Hollywood. But the problem isn't the producers, it's the audience. If only people would stop shelling out coin to go see SuperGuy in SuperGuy Film #X movies, we might start seeing more original and profound content. But it doesn't look like that is going to happen any time soon. Thankfully, there are alternatives to hollywood, and great films are being made as we speak. We just need to look a little harder to find them.

Yesterday David Lynch has confirmed the "Twin Peaks" - BLU RAY Boxset

""Rumours are just that. Rumours are rumours. There’s always been rumours about things and there’s no real truth to it. I don’t where these rumours come from, but I think they were based on some misunderstandings of what’s going on.

It’s true that there will be a new Blu-ray of Twin Peaks, of the pilot, the first season, the second season. And there will be some special things on that Blu-ray that haven’t been seen before. That’s about all I can say."

It would be great to have "Fire Walk with me" in the set, but since the movie is considered a separate "entity" i don't think it will be included with it (still, it would be great to have both the movie and the series in a single boxset...).

The "cut material" is a must have bonus, i'm wondering if those deleted scenes are finally going to see the light of day... Mark Frost said they are going to be released on this set, i really hope it's true:

I was waiting for a $100 price tag at least, i think it's a fair price for a 10 disc set, plus the artwork and the extras are more than enough reasons to pick it up...

I also own the DVD's (first release, blue box, not the golden one), but at least i'll get to upgrade to DVD a rewatch the whole thing again in the process...

part of the reason my fiancee contacted me on OK Cupid before we started dating was because i had listed myself as a david lynch fan (but i hadn't watched twin peaks at the time). she owns the gold box (i guess we own it since we live together and are getting married) but we pre-ordered the new blu-ray set without hesitation. Lynch and Mark Frost already dismissed those rumors, i believe they have their valid reasons but i wouldn't rule out a possible comeback (if the Blu Ray sells well and Lynch decides to do movie again he could easily be interested on revisiting the TP universe)

We'll have to wait and see...

Hmm, I don't know what Lynch's Star Wars would have looked like. Remember he made Dune instead (the book was an inspiration for Lucas). I really like that movie by the way, I also like all the flaws of it. But that movie tried to cram a thousand page book into 90 minutes. Return of the Jedi would have been a more straight affair.

When I lived in Clermont-Ferrand, FRA, there was an amazing exhibit put on by the FRAC (regional government backed art foundation) that blew my mind. There's a pretty good look at it here. The director of the FRAC (the guy with the chops talking to David) is a super talented gentleman and put the whole exhibit together-Lynch (in what was explained to me as a first for him) signed off on the exhibit on the spot after being shown the concepts.

The very end of it was pretty awesome for any Twin Peaks fans! Stay tuned to the end:

Yes, the international pilot was made as a sort of "short film" and revealed the killer, i guess the network ordered Lynch and Frost a more "straightforward kind of killer"

really? i LOVE it. after my first run through the series, my fiancee and i watched the film (she had seen both previously) and that was when i was like, "ok, i'm getting a twin peaks tattoo." i feel like the film is fantastic, and really not that straightforward. it's a very satisfying prequel to the events of the series, and makes the darkness of it even darker.

I thought of posting it here, since I don't have much to say about Lost Highway right now, with this being the catch-all David Lynch thread. (So it doesn't seem like it would've fit anywhere else.)

Anyway, aside from the horror, suspense and other entertainment factors that were already a given, I actually sometimes found myself to find Lost Highway to be relaxing for both some of the music and the scenery. I'll admit that I don't watch that many movies, nor have I, but I don't think I've had any horror film have that type of affect on me before. That's another thing I liked about Lost Highway whenever I'm in the mood to watch it. It was quite the pleasant surprise when I watched it for the first time, as some of the scenes and songs really were chill.

@henryeatscereal (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=1572) - I also put off getting a David Lynch collection for a while, but just reminded myself to get on that. From my understanding with what I've read and observed, Eraserhead, Dune and Blue Velvet are also great for starters, right?

You're probably better off leaving Dune out (Lynch doesn't even like that one). My starter picks would be Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet and the Twin Peaks TV series. After that go with Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Elephant Man, etc.

eversonpoe
12-29-2014, 05:06 PM
wild at heart is definitely a good entry-level lynch movie, but if you've already seen lost highway, you could definitely watch mulholland drive.

i don't love blue velvet (i find it to be his most depressing film for sure), and dune is weird but fun.

"Eraserhead" is definitely NOT the one to start with. "Wild At Heart" and "Blue Velvet" are his most down to Earth, followed by "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me"... However, this is where I differ from what's being said.. Depending on your age, and how avid a show watcher you are, I'd probably skip the Twin Peaks TV show, at least until after you watch the film.

I recently watched the complete series and I have to say, while it may have been cool and different at the time, it hasn't aged all that well. It's hokey, quirky, and has way too many characters that aren't referenced in the film (thank god). Like True Blood, it has strong storylines as well as incredibly weak storylines which it feels the need to show small parts of in nearly every episode, much like a soap opera. Plus the pacing is awkward, the reveals are weak by today's epic show standards (Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Walking Dead, etc), and it drags. The other thing, is that by the end, it pretty much explains nearly everything interesting about the story, which I imagine makes Fire Walk With Me a bit tedious.

I saw the film first, and it swept me off my feet. It's captivating, creepy, and has just the right of amount of unexplainable Lynch moments that let your mind wander for days after viewing. I enjoyed after all these years, going back and watching the pilot (international version), because it's a bit of an epilogue. However, if you do watch the series, the show starts to really tank after the beginning of season 2. According the cast and crew, Lynch and Frost really weren't around much or involved in the majority of the season and it shows (Ahem, Nadine.) So that's all I'll say about the the Twin Peaks series, but I do hope that the 2016 series is strong, otherwise Lynch might just go back to making albums and we all know how that goes.

In order of viewing I'd recommend "Blue Velvet", "Wild At Heart", "Twin Peaks", "Lost Highway", "Mulholland Drive". These are his strongest films. This being an NIN message board "Lost Highway" is mandatory viewing with the heavy Trent, dark influence both in sound and picture. While Lynch's other films are great as well, they falter in different ways to these five. "Eraserhead" and "Inland Empire" are his strangest. And while "Eraserhead" is probably his simplest, "Inland Empire" is his longest, most complicated. I'd say drugs are recommended for both, but they're not necessary. Those films do the tripping for you. "Dune", "The Elephant Man", and "The Straight Story" aren't in the vein of these other films. That said, any of these films are far superior to the crap Hollywood routinely tries to cram down our throats.

If I was to guide someone to the works of David Lynch. I would totally start things off with Blue Velvet and Mulholland Dr. since they're his most accessible and then go into films like The Elephant Man, Lost Highway, and Wild at Heart. Then go into Eraserhead and Inland Empire as there's a few things by Lynch that I need to see like The Straight Story and the Twin Peaks series.

I agree, i love "Eraserhead" but i wouldn't start there (oddly it was the second Lynch movie i ever saw), "Wild at heart" is my favorite one and "Fire Walk..." is like an epilogue to the series, "Blue Velvet" has all the "kinds" of Lynch available...

I'd say go for Blue Velvet. It's really an essential Lynch film from an earlier era; and it has many of the best qualities of (and similarities to) his later work Twin Peaks, while being a 2 hour movie instead of a long series.

...I also keep remembering Trent's review of Blue Velvet, simply because it's my favorite Lynch film, so I'm kind of pleased he liked it THAT much.

"When I saw Blue Velvet, I walked out of the theater changed and very shaken. I talked to someone later, and they said, "Didn't you think that was funny?" I didn't think it was funny. I was terrified, because, when I saw it, I realized I would have done the same thing as Kyle MacLachlan's character. I would've tried to sneak in, I would've felt for her - I would've done it all." -- "I've probably seen 'Blue Velvet' about 50 times, y'know?!"

:)

It definitely is a great intro to Lynch, it has a more grounded reality that keeps it from being totally alienating to those unfamiliar with his style (whereas I could see someone being put off by Lost Highway or Eraserhead's surrealness), but still is "out there" and has that almost nightmare-dream logic and style, along with the corrupt on the insides vision of small town America that Twin Peaks envisions.

I feel like once you've seen Blue Velvet, it's easy to say what other Lynch films would work for you, depending on what you get the most out of it.

last night, some of my friends from Consequence Of Sound curated "A Celebration of David Lynch" at The Music Box, wherein people dressed up and performed as characters from some of lynch's work and mingled with the crowd who enjoyed PBR specials, fresh pie, and excellent music and art. at midnight, they showed Blue Velvet.

my wife and i went for a bit but we're grandmas so we didn't stay for the movie. it was really fun to see people we know in character beforehand, though. my friend/bandmate dan was frank, complete with oxygen mask, my friend charlotte was the log lady, and a couple guys i know were the rabbits from inland empire. there were also people who weren't "working" who came dressed up, like the couple who looked EXACTLY like Sandy & Jeffrey from blue velvet, and i came as special agent cooper (i even had a mini-cassette recorder!) with a beard haha.

^That reminds me to the time i DJ'ed at a "Lynch Party" were everyone dressed as the characters from the movies and we had "Lych-themed" music obviously.
There was an "Elephant Man", "Laura Palmers", lots of "Rabbits" from Inland Empire and then it happened, the most awesome moment of the night: A guy dressed like the "creppy guy" from the party in "Lost Highway", came right to me with a telephone claiming "he was at my house right now", lol

It's been a while since i've watched the whole series, as soon as i'm finished with Mad Men, i'm going to watch the whole thing again, on my new Blu Ray boxset, of course...

In the Blue Velvet deleted scenes, did anyone else notice that during the scenes where Jeffrey receives a call from his mother telling him he needs to come home, that the music in the background is actually a modern day David Lynch track?

A pretty in-depth review of the Criterion Collection's Mulholland Drive Blu-ray: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/23834/mulhollanddrcriterion.html

It also goes into detail about the encoding/compression issues with the disc that have been brought to light.

hahahahahahahahaha

Fans of the movie may recall the minor controversy about "censorship" that erupted when it was first released on DVD. During her nude scene at the 99-minute mark, Laura Harring's crotch area was digitally obscured to block out her pubic region. (This carried through to the Studio Canal Blu-rays as well.) However, the scene in question was already cloaked in heavy shadows, and the effect was not visible at normal playback calibration levels. It only became an issue when certain horny viewers freeze-framed on the shot and cranked up their TVs' Brightness settings to ridiculous solar-flare levels.

In the interest of thoroughness, I made a point to check this. In what will no doubt be a great relief to perverts everywhere, the optical blurring has been removed from the new video transfer. To their inevitable dismay, they will be greatly disheartened to discover that the shot is so oppressively dark that it's not possible to see anything between the actress' legs anyway. It turns out that the blurring was never needed in the first place, and this remains a non-issue under normal viewing conditions.

I just finished the first of a four-part series that I'm doing about David Lynch as I'm not sure when it's going to come out for the blog I'm writing for but this is the biggest profile of a filmmaker that I've done since Woody Allen. Part 1 covers his early shorts to The Elephant Man, the second part revolves around Dune to Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, the third part covers On the Air to Mulholland Dr. and the fourth part will cover the shorts he did from 2002 to the upcoming revival of Twin Peaks as I posted my review of Dune: http://thevoid99.blogspot.com/2015/11/dune-1984-film.html

Twin Peaks always kind of lived in a time void, sure it aired in '90, but it never showed much in the way of technology. With the lengthy time passage being established in the original run ("I'll see you again in 25 years") I wonder what life is going to be like in the new Twin Peaks. Can you imagine everyone walking around with smart phones? Side thought, wasn't Mark Frost writing a book that was supposed to explain the stories of what happened to all of the characters during the last 25 years... any news on that?

Let's compare our favorite comments. Here's mine:

*Anonymous*

No contest. Criterion is clearly the best release. Other than that, the same bad apples posting nonsense. Nothing new.

Followed by...

*bad apple posting nonsense*

The childish kneejerk defensiveness Criterion knights exhibit in the face of unflattering feedback about the ouput of their sacred cow certainly does nothing to alleviate the temptation to hurl at-times-exaggerated criticism Criterion's way. "Bad apples posting nonsense"? As in, accurate observations about the completely suboptimal encoding? Are you retarded?

My face hurts

Mine was this exchange:

[21st century shithole irony]

It's an ironic encode. You guys just don't get it, Criterion is three steps ahead as always.
[Jerry Dandridge]
@21st century shithole irony: Criterion isn't always three steps ahead.
[21st century tonal grasp]
Not a serious remark, Jerry.

And, of course, this:
Indeed, Lynch has talked about this extensively in the vagina lotus afterbirth sessions; how he wanted to capture, in 2001, the feel of a movie being streamed via subpar internet connection and mpeg4 encoder in summer of 2009 via the initial disc-dependant PS3 iteration of Netflix streaming, like "A complete loser, lost to the world".

Inland Empire is really full-on subconcious Lynch and if Lost Highway isn't your thing, IE certainly won't be. Laura Dern's performance is maybe her best ever out of her pretty damn impressive career. It's one of his only movies I make zero attempts to make sense of since Lynch himself had said that entire scenes were often written on-set and made up as they went along and I just let it serve as an atmospheric mood piece. Lost Highway, you can figure out pretty easy. IE has the most insane and reaching fan blog analyses I've ever seen (and anyone who goes to the Kanye thread here knows I'm no stranger to making insane and reaching analyses).

Wild at Heart is like white trash Lynch and it's an indulgent, over the top blast. Just an extremely fun film to watch and show to the uninitiated.

I feel like there's two takes on the movie you can go with: supernatural or psychological. Both work beside one another, though. I hope the spoiler tags work but it's a 20 year old movie so fuck it.

Psychological: He becomes suspicious of his wife cheating on him, and that paranoia manifests itself in the tapes, in the sense of "someone else" being in their home, looking into the bedroom, etc. because of that fear of another man in his house, ie., in his marriage and in his bed. He meets the Mystery Man who is exactly that: already in his house. The affair is already going on. But it's practically ignored by everyone else and no one sees how disturbing it is, in the way that everyone seems to ignore the Mystery Man.

You could take it as representative of him meeting the man she's sleeping with, and no one else seeing how wrong it all is, and him perceiving the MM as the freakish, frightening ghoul that he does because of it. He ends up catching her and murdering her. He goes to prison, is sentenced to death, and on the verge of execution, runs away in his head kinda like Nabakov's Invitation to a Beheading. In it, to escape that guilt, and run as far from reality as possible, he imagines himself as a young kid, very cliche bad-boy-type, going on to slowly encounter the seedier aspects of things. He meets a woman who's his wife, but looks a little different (the hair), and is herself a different person. Sexual immorality is brought back in through her seemingly coerced porn career -- so now she's sleeping with other men, etc. and he's not all there is -- and slowly but surely that "other life" in his subconscious creeps in. The Mystery Man reappears and terrifies him, but he isn't quite sure why, and he goes on to tell him of the executions in the Far East, and never knowing when it's going to happen -- he's confused, but this is exactly what's happening to him here. The fantasy collapses and he's back to being himself now, killing someone all over again and going on the run, warning himself of the affair that is going on by dropping off the video tape at his house from the beginning. He continues to flee from his guilt, but, inevitably, that road must end somewhere, representing his inevitable death/execution.

Supernatural: Gets video tapes leading into his house that raise suspicion, he's sexually impotent and insecure, etc., all that's the same. Kills his wife, that happens. Goes to prison, that happens. The Mystery Man is a manifestation of his paranoia and fear, his darker less trusting side, etc., a sort of evil figure that encourages his distrust of his wife and his depraved violent side -- which is why at the end of the movie, he's taping him murdering Robert Loggia and seeming to egg him on. Anyway he's supposed to be executed but is transported to another life where he's now the young kid, which, yeah, is split personality in that sense. In general in both interpretations many characters are "sides" of themselves. Just that in one, it's literal and one, it's mental. He's being punished by knowing his execution will come at any time, consumed by his guilt, and never knowing when -- he begins to remember his "real" self and finally transforms back, incapable of ever being with his wife again because of her death, and having been incapable of being with her because of their emotional distance and her affair -- hence, "I want you, I want you" followed by "You'll never have me." He and the MM kill Loggia and he gives himself the tape from the beginning of the film via time travel -- he's learned what this "lesson" was supposed to teach him, and tries to prevent it by passing it on to his past self, showing him what will happen (with the tape ending in footage of him above his wife's torn apart corpse). Having escaped prison and being a wanted man, he drives off, the timelines merging, as he goes down a seamlessly unending road into the darkness ahead.

I've done better jobs at explaining it before (or at least my perception of it; that's part of Lynch's fun -- often multiple interpretations are all equally interesting and valid), but that's the gist of it. Hopefully that helps!

Inland Empire as far as I remember is linear for the first hour and thirty minutes. Then it ends up unraveling into major wtf material. But what ends up happening is told to you in the film somewhere during the beginning (I can't remember when, but the director of the movie they're making tells the actors about the movie, and one thing he tells them is important.)

Also worth watching along with it, though I don't think these scenes are canon, is More Things That Happened, the deleted scenes which were edited into their own film kind of like the Blue Velvet deleted scenes. More Things That Happened is probably one of the most ignored films in David Lynch's filmography.

also, about Lost Highway, it's worth noting that the OJ Simpson Trial had a influence on the movie plus

I probably would have loved Inland Empire if he'd filmed it a decade earlier and couldn't have gone the digital route. Or maybe if he'd filmed it a decade later when the quality of digital was better. As it stands, I feel like the film is marred by the way he made it. To me it doesn't feel Lynchian, and it's just hard for me to get lost in it.

The main reason why he filmed it with that quality of digital is because he liked how claustrophobic and nightmarish it looked. I think it works. But that's just me.

I really regard Inland as being more or less a total experiment. It's him experimenting with digital cameras, it's him experimenting with the extremely low budget that would allow for, it's him experimenting for the freedom that allowed for -- suddenly he could shoot all day or have however many takes he wanted or have everything be improv'ed or made up whenever they felt like it because to film didn't mean they had to burn money all day and have as big a crew, etc. It allowed the actors more freedom and he was experimenting with that.

There's a narrative there, sure, and definitely core ideas present, but it's not some carefully constructed definable thing like Mulholland Dr. is. Like a nightmare, it maybe makes sense at points, and there's a through-line there somewhere, but it's ultimately senseless and can go off in whatever direction it wants to at any given moment, and go back to whatever the core of it was at will whenever it feels like it. It's not a movie interested in act structure or being something of a mystery for the viewer to figure out. There's a thesis statement somewhere in there, but the essay just starts rambling about whatever the hell it damn well feels like in the middle of sentences and paragraphs.

I don't view it like I do almost any other movie he's made and see it as a really neat atmospheric mood piece, a sort of film-based art installation rather than a narrative that's from some tight screenplay and narrative. It's his most subconscious movie as far as I'm concerned, whereas Mulholland Dr. is in this blurred space between the subconscious and the cerebral, maybe next to Lost Highway.

I'd recommend this if you can find it. It has a lot of drones and sounds used in David's films, like the train whistle that is sort of iconic, well, to me at least. I admit, I acquired it the an illegitimate way because it's incredibly expensive and I wasn't planning on using the sounds. But it's expensive since it's royalty free sounds.

Yeah, I definitely don't have any issue with how formless the story is. I find the formless, nightmarish approach to be really intriguing. It's literally just the way it LOOKS to me. Like the image quality and the color tones of it. There are times where it almost reminds of a home video camera or even a webcam or something along those lines. I understand of course that some people really enjoy that quality, but it just never really clicked with me. Like, literally, I would probably love the movie if he filmed the exact same stuff but used a different camera. *shrug*

I acctually find Mullholland Drive really emotional that club Silenco scene sums up what i love about this film.

Its a wonderful powerful dreamy masterpiece.. that word is used too often!
Around 2010 at the end of last decade, many critics were calling it the greatest film of the 2000's.
Ive seen it listed at the top of quite a few of these sort of lists before.
Its one of only 2 films released since 2000 on the Sight and Sound best films ever.

I didnt like it when i first saw it around 2004, but something ticked when i watched it a few years ago, and its just amazing.
Im not acctually the biggest Lynch fan this the only thing by him i love, although i do find all of his work very interesting especially Lost Highway and Rabbits.

Eraserhead rests firmly at the top of that canon of American underground culture for which there is no genre. A staple of the dark underbelly of popular cinema that was originally only viewable at arthouse screenings or on the Midnight Movie circuit, Eraserhead is a truly unadulterated offering; and much of its sensation lies beyond the purely visual realm. The stark, dusty black and white images put forth are caked with and submerged in a dense jungle of industrial hums, buzzes, screeches and screams. Eraserhead is a narrative made up of two intertwined veins: one of bleak and beautiful pictures elegantly painted in gray and black, and one of blankets of sublime, enveloping noise and static, the tinkering of Fats Waller organ rolls echoing in the background.

To lay in the dark and listen to this dizzying succession of blissful noise is a different way to get “lost” than in the visuals of the film itself. It’s no stretch to consider this soundtrack an experimental, early industrial masterpiece. Eraserhead’s individual passion and personal tone shines through even in the thickest moments of fierce static, an audio undertaking that took David Lynch and sound designer Alan Splet years to perfect. Eraserhead’s most famous piece of music is undoubtedly Peter Ivers’ unforgettable, oft-covered haunting ballad “In Heaven,” and the most exciting attribute of this edition of the soundtrack is no doubt its expansion, and it’s present here, along with “Pete’s Boogie,” an Ivers recording previously only available on the long out-of-print limited edition LP of this soundtrack.

uh...yes please

also, the music box here in chicago is beginning this tonight:

I'm fine with it. He hasn't had a film since 2006's Inland Empire anyways.

I really wanna buy Mulholland Drive and a few other of his films on blu-ray but the prices are extravagantly high. It turns me off but oh how I want them. You can't even buy a Region A blu-ray version of Lost Highway.

It was to be expected; but i don't believe him, i think he'll make at least another movie...

If he doesn't, that's fine too... He's one of my favorites but i think he has "said" all he needed to and the new series will give us plenty more of the "Lynch universe" to dwell into.

If he's not going to make anymore films. I'm fine with it. We got a new season of Twin Peaks coming. That's more than enough. He's already got a legacy well intact.

He also said he'd never shoot on film or edit with a computer either. If Terence Malick can make several films in a row now with the kind of backing he's getting, Lynch can certainly find it too. I suppose that the experience with what happened on Inland Empire made him tap out.

Has anybody here watched The Art Life? I rented it today on Amazon and loved it -- it was far more personal and revealing than just about anything else I've seen from Lynch. Also, it has the Criterion/Janus title cards in the front, so it's likely going to get either its own standalone release or included in the Criterion Fire Walk With Me set that's known but not officially confirmed just yet (the poster for FWWM on Apple TV even has the Criterion logo on it).

I haven't seen it, but I'm pretty sure it will get a standalone release because I was able to add it to my Netflix DVD queue. Glad you liked it, now I'm excited for when it becomes available to me.

Don't you guys think it's adorable and bizarre that Lynch calls Madchen, (which is pronounced MAY-chen,) "Madge-kin?"
And stranger still, he calls Kyle Maclachlan "Kale."

have you not watched the "between two worlds" special feature where he sits down and talks to them (and a guy who worked on the series during its original run) and explains why? it's a special feature on both the DVD gold box and the "complete mystery" blu-ray box (it's longer on there). there's also one where he interviews the "palmer family" as their characters, and then talks to them as the actors. both are great and totally worth watching. sadly, i can't seem to find them online.

anyway, kyle is "kale" because of dino delaurentis being unable to pronounce his name while they were making dune, and madchen is "madgekin" because david gave her that nickname for fun. there's more detail than that, but that's the gist of it.

no, it's not. it's on the complete mystery blu-ray box set and it's extended from the version that was in the gold box. i can't remember which disc it was on but my wife and i watched it when we got to that disc in our re-watch. i will pop them in and take a look. i think it's titled differently or something, but i promise it's there.

edit: it's called A Slice Of Lynch and i had mixed it up with the "between two worlds" feature's title. and i found it on youtube, for those of you who don't own the box set! (this is the 30-minute version, not the extended version, sorry)

Has a Lynch 2-film viewing party this weekend; it was all of my friends' first exposure to Blue Velvet and everyone's, myself included, to Wild At Heart.

-The dead silence from everyone during Frank Booth's entire introduction scene was as priceless as their laughter whenever Heineken or PBR was mentioned

-Wild At Heart was actually a lot more enjoyable than I thought it might be. I really found myself liking Nic Cage in it, in all his ridiculousness. :)

i feel like that was the first time nic cage got to go FULL NIC CAGE, you know what i mean? i love that movie more every time i watch it.

i've only seen blue velvet once and, honestly, that was enough. it was good, but it's definitely the most upsetting lynch film, in my opinion.

I've whined about this already numerously in here but I hate the lack of blu-ray versions and transfers of Lynch's films in the US. It's impossible to get Wild At Heart due to it being OOP, there's no US blu of Lost Highway, etc.

It's so frustrating as I now loathe DVDs so if I want them I have to find HD rips online, import expensive foreign copies to see in best quality possible or buy shit ass vanilla DVD copies. Haha.

that's the version of wild at heart we have. my wife is subscribed to the Twilight Time e-mail newsletter and that's how we found out about when it was getting printed. it looks/sounds phenomenal, and we only paid $35 for it (which isn't that unreasonable) when we pre-ordered it.

Love me some bi-annual Criterion Collection half-off sales at B&N. It's also a lame excuse to go trawl through their vinyl section while I'm there.

Tonight on blu-ray I bought Eraserhead, Charade, The Killers, Mildred Pierce, The Asphalt Jungle, Medium Cool, Diabolique, His Girl Friday and They Live By Night

Oh man, I paid like $50 for mine and it now goes for upwards of $80 even for just for a decent used copy, I think? Twilight Time releases some great titles, but they're exclusive af and skyrocket in price quick. I got caught sleeping on their release of The Big Heat a few years back and paid like $75 for it after the fact. Worth every penny, but sheesh..

I wish the documentary Lynch Two wasn't only on the special edition of Inland Empire, which goes above 40$ now. Haven't ever seen it, and it's not even something you can find online. Wonder why it isn't on the criterion release of The Art Life? Would have been a good extra, along with Lynch One.

Blue Velvet is probably my favorite. Or, it's at least tied with Eraserhead. It's so good. Hopper just killed that role and was an absolute nut job. It was wonderful.

Inland Empire seems impossible to find (legally) online. I'm toeing a line right now, so that's important. I just want to say though that making things so difficult for someone with three different services to find makes wanting to find alternate routes more appealing. That's the one people talk about the most that I haven't yet seen. (I've seen the rest.) My favorite remains Eraserhead. I watch it every few years, and I interpret it completely different, each time. I don't think there's any other movie I can say that about.

I am a long time fan of Lynch's work and found this just recently:

https://festivalofdisruption.com

after finding out about this festival, im delved into reading into the Lynch Foundation.
(and more recently have found myself in a position to play more of an advocate role for, and court appointed legal guardian to my brother who is severely mentally ill)

https://www.davidlynchfoundation.org/upcoming-events.html

the particular fund raising purpose for this show is tied in with PTSD (being a veteran myself, and knowing other veteran's who suffer from PTSD)
i want to know more about this ambient therapy i read on the foundation website:

"... DLF, dedicated to eradicating post-traumatic stress and trauma in at-risk populations through the evidence-based Transcendental Meditation technique..."

Does anyone know what this 'DLF' therapy is?
I am intrigued and considering making the trip to see this, though the only tickets still available are pretty steep..
anyone else interested, or already going..?

lynch is also into transcendental meditation which, while it seems like it works for a lot of people, is also somewhat time consuming and very expensive to learn how to do.
