Am I the only one that's been seeing these an awful lot since the website's been down?

Yesterday I was in my local giant HMV megastore, that is actually closing down it's location. Just poped in for a minute to see if there were any decent sales, and a guy that was walking around the same aisle as me had the 2010 re-issue of "Pretty Hate Machine" in his hand.

That counts as a spotting right?

New Grammy rules set off more grumbling

latimesblogs.latimes.com (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2011/12/new-grammy-rules-set-off-more-grumbling-.html)

Veteran talent manager and former record executive Jim Guerinot, whose clients include Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, noted that Reznor won the Oscar for his score for the movie “The Social Network” but didn't make the Grammy nomination list.

“Today it was opening my paper and seeing that the guy who won the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for best score didn't even get nominated.… I don't know what they've done to improve the process” with this year's changes, Guerinot said. “The Grammys have led with their chin for 30 years, and they're not going to stop now. It's what they do.”

"Leona Lewis is set to cover the Nine Inch Nails' 1994 track 'Hurt' on her forthcoming EP.
Famously covered in 2002 by Johnny Cash, Lewis will feature the song on 'Hurt: The EP', which is set for release on December 9. "

That's debatable. Brent DiCrescenzo may be a joke, but there wasn't really anything terribly funny about his reviews.

Okay, who stated this and where? I don't believe it's a joke, at all. Many of Pitchfork's reviews around that time were like this. They have improved incredibly in being fair, less snobby, and sensible, so it may look unbelievable next to their current reviews.

That was written when Pitchfork was trying to be Creem Magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creem) and Brent thought he was Lester Bangs (or maybe John Kordosh re his disdain for Rush (http://white-barn.com/nms/html/nms_274.htm)). Pitchfork since changed directions, moved out of Chicago, and Brent hasn't worked for Pitchfork in many years.

The Sun is a UK tabloid newspaper - there is a whole government innquiry going on into tabloid newspapers / phone hacking etc in the UK called the Leveson inquiry - from what has come out in that, it wouldn't surprise me if it was totally made up!

Spotting - Hurt cover by Leona Lewis - bit swanky, full band etc but personally I don't find covers that offensive

Newspaper Metro in Sweden reviewed Dragon Tattoo yesterday. They gave it 4/5 stars and mentioned THA MUSIIIIIIIC! Said that one will notice the director's trademarks in, among other things, "the dark undertones, which, like Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's music, chafe against the impression of superficial perfectionism."
The reviewer also mentioned the NIN shirt of legend. Exclamation point and all. Methinks she's a fan.

Long before he was 'Oscar winner' Trent Reznor, he was 'ass-kicker' Trent Reznor. From the grumbling stomp of "The Beginning Of The End" to the breathy anguish in the tangled beats and chimes of "The Good Soldier", this is Nine Inch Nails' most rewarding effort in years. The itchy, rusted sounds layered through Reznor's manic voice on "Me, I'm Not" and the politically charged "Capital G", with marching vocals and gritty guitar, join with the twisted grind of "Meet Your Master" to create an engaging album from start to finish.

HTDA spotting: A handful of major Swedish newspapers (or at least their online versions) ran blurbs (pretty identical) about HTDA:s album plans, based on the Rolling Stone article. I thought about how Trent said in some recent interview that it's harder than you imagine for your Twitter voice "to be heard in, say, France." But now a few more foreign peoplez will know... and remember... and seek out the album! :D

I'm glad he finally said something about what happened with One Hour Photo:

"In 2001, Reznor was recruited by director Mark Romanek, who had worked on NIN videos “Closer” and “The Perfect Drug,” to compose music for the indie thriller One Hour Photo, starring Robin Williams. Reznor submitted several compositions, but none made it into the movie. “I remember there was an issue with the studio trusting someone who had never scored a film before, so that was the end of that,” he says, recalling the sting of rejection by Fox Searchlight. “But the way I choose to see things in my own life, I was getting into a pretty bad space. I was an addict and not functioning very well at that time. So I’m kind of grateful it didn’t come together because I couldn’t have done my best work then.” Whether his first film fail came before or after hitting rock bottom, Reznor can’t recall, but he says, “It was another brick in the wall of, ‘Hey, you need to get your shit together.’ ” He got sober that summer and has been clean for 10 years."

New thingy with The Graudian, notable quote:

He has also been approached to direct his first movie, and is developing a 10-part HBO mini-series very loosely inspired by his 2007 album Year Zero[/URL], a dystopian protest record – although he's having problems finding the right screenwriter.
"I chose not to write it myself because I don't know how to do that. But now I'm thinking I should have." He shrugs happily. "Somebody's got to do it, right? How hard can it be?"

Do you not know how cheap good cameras are these days? and in all caps it says right under the video.

"THIS IS A NON-PROFIT FILM AND IS FOR PRIVATE USE ONLY NOT INTENDED FOR SALES OR COMMERCIAL USE. WE RESERVE THE COPYRIGHTS AND TM TO THE ORIGINAL CREATORS OF THE FOLLOWING CONTENT USED WITHIN THE FILM. THIS FILM WAS PRODUCED SOLELY FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES AND FOR THE LOVE TOWARD GAMING, MUSIC, AND AIRSOFTING."

I don't see anything wrong with that..

And one guy with a hobby of editing can put together all the sound effects straight from left4dead and put them into the video.

Oh, I am quite well aware of how cheap some cameras are. I also happen to be very well aware of how much production costs - in terms of lighting, lenses, steady-cams, glide-cams, dollies, wardrobe, makeup (especially zombie makeup), location shooting permits, props, set dressing, etc.... Unless they owned all of that already - I sincerely doubt that this didn't cost something grand out of someone's pocket. Plus, are you aware of how many HOURS it probably took post-production to color correct, sound design, and create graphics for this thing?

Sure - it was a labor of love. A non-profit short film. However - it still bothers me that someone with money threw it away to create something penned by a toddler. It just seems like a complete waste of a LOT of peoples' stellar work... even if they did do for fun.

This just may be me being bitter living in Hollywood and seeing the type of money thrown around on insipid, completely horrible projects. *shrug*

Didn't see this come up anywhere else, but Trent was on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic again before TGWTDT came out. http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/mb/mb111219trent_reznor

Highlights:
• Trent was involved at least a little bit with the marketing of the movie. As Trent puts it: "We had a few think tanks where a few smart people showed up together and I showed up too."
• Trent addresses playing his scores live. It's a possibility but no concrete details.

We're In This Together is used in the trailer for the Avengers! I mention it because it's one of my favorite NIN songs and the trailer exposes tons of people to NIN. The music really pumps up the trailer. This was during the previews before the main film, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (Vancouver, Canada).

I'm not surprised on that first highlight. 42 Entertainment is thanked in the liner notes of the soundtrack, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's how the whole prop giveaway came about.

Thank you for sharing! I really enjoyed this interview: I love that he mentions both The Chemical Brothers and Cliff Martinez in terms of recent unconventional scores. Both of those parties turned in stellar work this year for Hanna and Drive. I also love that he predicts the How To Destroy Angels LP will blow our minds - I wouldn't be surprised. :) Can't wait for it.

The new issue of Entertainment Weekly, which is also the second Dragon Tattoo cover story the magazine has ran, discusses Rooney Mara's tough Oscar competition. "The movie's best shot at a nod? Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' mesmerizing score." Right on.

Writing new NIN material! The real interesting thing is that he says it could have been under a new name; makes me wonder what kind of musical direction this new material was going for him to consider not releasing it under NIN.

There was an old spotting ('05) on Language Log that may have been recorded here, but if so was lost with everything else: http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/002621.html

Great little post, and the sentence in question was probably not even an accident. Presented here in its entirety:

THE TRENT REZNOR PRIZE FOR TRICKY EMBEDDING

Matthew Hutson, noting my interest in embedding (http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/002465.html), has observed by email that Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails is responsible (http://www.newtimesbpb.com/Issues/2005-10-20/music/music.html) for "the most tricky and yet correct and clear sentence by a rockstar in an interview that I have ever seen":

"When I look at people that I would like to feel have been a mentor or an inspiring kind of archetype of what I'd love to see my career eventually be mentioned as a footnote for in the same paragraph, it would be, like, Bowie."

Matthew suggests that Reznor deserves extra points because his sentence is "finished with a flourish of 'like.'" It surely is, even if Reznor seems to be a bit confused about where footnotes go, and so I hereby inaugurate the Trent Reznor Prize for Tricky Embedding, to be awarded intermittently.

Today's LL mentions that old post (which is the only reason I remember it): http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=3724

Retard say what? This is old but I recently found it. Looks like we're fucked. LOL!!

A report has emerged stating that a 29-year-old woman has told investigators that she set fire to her childhood home because of messages in the music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails.

A 29-year-old El Paso, Texas native accused of attempting to burn down her childhood family home has allegedly claimed that the music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails has influenced her behaviour, according to a new report from the El Paso Times.

Christina Paz told investigators “she was angry at her mom and dad for trying to kill her on Christmas Day, that they had planned to sodomize her and chop her up with the help of a neighbor [sic].”

An investigator asked Paz how she knew her parents wanted to kill her “and she said through the music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails.”
Paz faces a felony charge of arson of a habitation and remains jailed in lieu of posting $20,000 bond.[/URL]

That was the best TR interview I've read in many years.

That was a long setup for me saying – I thought it would be interesting to look at an album more like a magazine. Let’s do it, not carelessly, but let’s not look at it as the next thing that’s my big statement for the next four years of my life. Here was a very intensive and creative six-to-eight weeks of my life I had, as an album. Here it is. It’s free. That’s what The Slip (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=eH8NOY8fBFE&offerid=78941&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%3A%2F%2Fphobos.apple.com%2FWebObject s%2FMZStore.woa%2Fwa%2FviewAlbum%3Fid%3D285284658% 26s%3D143441%26partnerId%3D30) was. It’s fun to do, it was interesting to see if it could be done. I’m proud of that record, it was fun to make. The self-imposed pressure was also matched with [the fact that] if it sucked I didn’t have to put it out.
It was a fun process. Now compare that to The Fragile, where we spent two years writing and working on that album. And that was also a fun process, but when approaching something that has a lot of length to it, and time, we could go off on tangents, say “What if we don’t put the mics where we normally do, but try something different? Or what if we played on a different instrument that we don’t know how to play? Or what if we hired someone to come in to do this? Or…what if?”
When you have a broader scope, it tends to allow you to do those things which, they don’t always work, but you learn something from it.
…Dragon Tattoo, and I’m boring myself with this long answer, that was an excuse to follow some of those trailheads. And in the process, we learned a lot about trying new things, as opposed to The Social Network, which used and modified a skill set that we already had. [26:06]

what an amazing answer; I had been digging this soundtrack more than anything TR has done in awhile, and I couldn't quite pinpoint why - the fact that it turns out that it came from a similar sort of work ethic as the fragile (my favorite album) explains a bit, and that that was a calculated decision makes me happy.

Heh. For those of you who were on the original ETS, you may remember Mormolyke's spinning-head avatar. That was actually done by Karl, who not long afterward I guess, formed Angelspit. He used to do stuff with the band she was in at the time, Dead Inside the Chrysalis. I met Karl & Amelia back in... 2002/3 at a DITC show, I don't think they'd formed a band yet. No discussion of NIN sadly, except Dave Pensado referred to the Fragile twice, once as "that cool double album" and another time as a "great record." Oh man, I can so relate to this bit at the end of that article:

Now I’m going to be honest: I don’t really remember that interview. I don’t remember what happened once we sat down on that dressing room couch. My brain couldn’t really take it. You must understand, this was my first interview and it was with my idol. If there was one person I could choose to interview at that particular time in my life – a dream interview, so to speak – it would have been Trent Reznor.

I'm not sure how particularly well known this is at this point, but I had an interview with Trent in 1999. And I have nearly no recollection of that interview. There was a bit where he maliciously joked about Steve Gottleib. And I think I asked about the "Perfect Drug" mod for Rebirth that never came out. The rest? Total brain overload. Even on the flight back home, I couldn't recollect much from that conversation.

Not really. It's odd that pretty much the whole interview was about Trent. He says he was glad to see them win the Oscar, and that the idea behind Tapeworm was essentially what Puscifer turned into. He also said that there's no sense in trying to go back and make that project work again, because everyone involved has moved on. It's nothing we haven't heard before, but it's interesting to hear someone asking Maynard about it rather than Trent.

Oh man, I can so relate to this bit at the end of that article:

I'm not sure how particularly well known this is at this point, but I had an interview with Trent in 1999. And I have nearly no recollection of that interview. There was a bit where he maliciously joked about Steve Gottleib. And I think I asked about the "Perfect Drug" mod for Rebirth that never came out. The rest? Total brain overload. Even on the flight back home, I couldn't recollect much from that conversation.

Is the interview around anywhere? There was supposed to be a Perfect Drug mod for Rebirth? What would it have been?

At the time I was hanging out on the Propellerhead Software forum and one of the devs hinted that there was going to be a mod for Rebirth somehow related to The Perfect Drug. Not sure who would be handling the graphics (this was pre-Rob), but presumably the sounds would have been samples from the various drums used in TPD.

That would have fucking melted my 13-year-old brain in 1999 from pure joy.

I recorded a whole LP's worth of electronic music using shareware like that in mid-2000 after I'd read about what PC software the production team used on The Fragile (Audiomulch played a big role, for example). My friend even bought a hard copy of the CD from the old mp3.com (which used to resemble a sort of MySpace-meets-proto-Bandcamp). That's the only copy in existence, thankfully; most of it was totally embarrassing to listen to, even at 14 years old.

An article about Sushi Nozawa closing down includes Trent's thought of it closing.

Trent Reznor, of the Nine Inch Nails and longtime Sushi Nozawa regular commented, “Sushi Nozawa is quite simply my very favorite place in the world to eat. Chef Nozawa is truly a great artist and has lifted the spirits of many an evening with the simplicity and perfection of what he serves. I will miss seeing Nozawa-san behind the bar.”

Old interview with Boyd Rice on Trent and the NIN-logo:

"BB: Have you ever noticed the similarities between the NINE INCH NAILS logo and yours?

NON: Yeah, everybody’s noticed it. I think even the president of my record company actually talked to Trent Reznor and brought that up.

BB: He’s from Cleveland and a lot of people around here don’t like him. I don’t like him because I had his grandpa’s shitty Reznor heaters in my building and they sucked.

NON: I’ve seen those Reznor heaters and I always wondered if there was a connection.

BB: Were they working.

NON: I don’t know, but I know a lot of people who know him and they all basically say he’s an okay guy and that I’d probably like him if I met him.

BB: Let’s move away from Trent and go back to 1980 when you appeared on the "Darker Scratcher" compilation. Your song with Daniel Miller is great. Where did you get the sample of the woman speaking throughout the piece?"

Two TR-spottings that I'm putting here.
In Keyboard magazine this month, they have a quick review of the TGWTDT soundtrack and describe it as "Brilliant."

In Guitar Player magazine this month, there's a feature on guitars in movie scores, and several of the interviewees talk about how "hot" the social network score is in hollywood at the moment, how it's being used for all sorts of temp tracks, and how they're all being asked to add guitar to their scores as a result. (I didn't think there was much guitar in that, but okay -- they're the professionals.) One of them was kind of dickish about the score too.

I tried submitting this news to TNH but the submission form wouldn't work on my iPhone, it just kept jumping up to the top of the page :(

Anyways, the TR/KarenO cover has been used in the teaser trailer for the pilot of BATTLERSTAR GALACTICA: Blood and Chrome and I must say, it fits perfectly with the flow of images and action. Granted, it's almost a direct ripoff of TGWTDT trailer (style wise) but I don't care. I just hope SYFY picks this up and makes it into a series!

Hadn't connected that THE Paul Epworth of Adele and Produce of the Year fame was the one who did the awesome Capital G remix.

Can you talk about remixing Nine Inch Nails’ “Capital G”?

I really enjoyed doing that mix. The parts that Trent [Reznor] and Atticus [Ross] came up with gave me so much good material to work with that I always knew the end result was going to be exciting. Working on that was a total buzz. Nine Inch Nails is one of those bands that I loved when I discovered them as a kid.

NME's 50 Greatest Producers Ever (http://www.nme.com/list/the-50-greatest-producers-ever/262849)

#39 Trent Reznor

Produced: Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Zack de la Rocha
Nine Inch Nails noisenik Trent Reznor has been draping his industrial squall over the US alternative scene for the best part of three decades, most commonly with NIN but most notoriously with shock-rock misfit Marilyn Manson. NIN’s 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine was a proto-grunge shot in the arm for hard rock, fusing cranium-caving industrial noise with samples to form an unlikely transatlantic hit, and greater success followed as Reznor honed a warped pop sensibility. His work with Marilyn Manson began in 1994, a relationship that endured for three albums and coincided with Manson’s creative – and controversial – peak. MH

Cool to see him listed, but what a lame write-up and song selection for TR's production work. Missing: Flood, Gareth Jones, Alan Moulder. Respectable Top 10 though.

Very mildly I guess but no more so than saying 'Rock is Dead' is played at the end of the Matrix, that's why I didn't spoiler tag the thing. I also forgot to mention that one of the characters has a 'West Indian Girl' poster in her room.

Was actually quite good, not top tier Whedon (certain Buffy/Angel episodes) but close and definitely had his trademark humour and a nice take on horror movies. I won't say more for fear of spoiling. It actually holds up well to say it was filmed three years ago.

Unfortunately, it's not a remix. It's an uncredited cover. It's like someone sucked the soul out of 10 Ghosts II and spit out the skeleton. Seriously, Konami can fork out enough money to have someone completely rip off a NIN song, but not quite enough to license the actual song? Waits found himself in a situation similar to his earlier one with Frito Lay in 2000 when Audi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi) approached him, asking to use "Innocent When You Dream" (from Franks Wild Years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franks_Wild_Years)) for a commercial broadcast in Spain. Waits declined, but the commercial ultimately featured music very similar to that song. Waits undertook legal action, and a Spanish court recognized that there had been a violation of Waits's moral rights in addition to the infringement of copyright. The production company, Tandem Campany Guasch, was ordered to pay compensation to Waits through his Spanish publisher. Waits was later quoted as jokingly saying the company got the name of the song wrong, thinking it was called "Innocent When You Scheme".

In 2005, Waits sued Adam Opel AG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Opel_AG), claiming that, after having failed to sign him to sing in their Scandinavian commercials, they had hired a sound-alike singer. In 2007, the suit was settled, and Waits gave the sum to charity.

Perhaps, rather than Trent blocking it, they misunderstood Ghosts' CC license? NIN's been in a lot of trailers over the past couple of years, I doubt he'd block Konami unless they offered a stupidly low amount.

It seems like that's the thing to do with commercials today. If they can't get a popular song for the commercial, they have someone create a sound-alike track. I can't remember the commercial, but I distinctly remember one that had a sound-alike version of Beautiful Day by U2. In fact, if I didn't know that song well enough, I would have been fooled.

Haha, I just used Shazam on that trailer, but unfortunately it didn't come out as Ghosts II 10. Wish it would. That'd be even more ridiciulous. But Youtube has it listed on the sidebar. C'mon, that's not even a real attempt at recreating the actual track. It just sounds like it was run through several filters.

Anway, I would let it slip if I was Trent.

I wouldn't blink if Trent went Tom Waits on them over this.

Sounds familiar?

PS: I've just watched Supernatural's new episode called "The Girl With The Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo" and in the final scenes where the hacker chick is trying to hack the bad guy's computer the music was quite similar to TR's and AR's scores (or I thought so), probably paying tribute to Fincher's movie (hence the title of the episode and part of its argument).

My friend works for Dubspot in NYC, and through them, he interviewed Photek at SXSW - in the video, he mentions working with Trent during the With Teeth era. Very cool!

Trent Reznor and Mick at the Quaker Steak and Lube in Erie, PA.

Coincidentally, I'm a finalist (1 of only 10) in Quaker Steak and Lube's Sauce Boss contest. They're deciding the grand prize winner (roughly $2k in cash and prizes) by internet voting. Tonight is the final night of voting and I'd appreciate all the help I can get. Vote for my sauce "Arizona Brushfire" and help push me to the top. (https://www.facebook.com/TheOfficialQSL/app_197634860345445) There's no limit on how many times you can vote.

Apologies for shilling, this'll be the last of it.

Watching Ellen only gains you man points. Never let anyone tell you any different.

edit: Also, I'm convinced Ellen is a NIN fan. She has mentioned them a few times that I remember, once in one of her stand up specials I have, when explaining how she arranged her music (Meatloaf next to The Cranberries, The Carpenters and The Doors and Nine Inch Nails, etc). Once when she had a little girl as a musical guest, she asked what kind of music she likes, and the girl was shy and didn't have an answer, so she asked "Do you like Nine Inch Nails?". The only band she mentioned at all.

So I have the Devils rangers game on the TV in the background, totally forgot about Ghosts playing in the stadium before the show, freaked out and turned up the TV. My mom was like "what, are they saying something?" Then I said they were playing Nine Inch Nails, and she thought I meant NIN was playing live between periods and "of course, they're in Jersey when you're up here visiting". Oh, mom.
