Anyone know WTF this is? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1964445/?mode=desktop)

It has two trailers linked from the page, in the description it states "It's a film by Melike Amjarv of NIN concert, edited, de-interlaced, and color corrected together from 405 gigs of amateur HD footage, available for downloads at the bands web-page."

It's just another edit of The Gift footage, but someone made an IMDB page for it.

In the new Electronic Musician (Jack White on the cover), they have an article called "The Electronic Musician Hall of Fame," which details key people, events, and technologies that shaped electronic music. Trent Reznor is on the list as a "Cutting-Edge Musician." There's a few paragraphs nicely summing up his career.

I was in Washington, D.C. recently, at the National Museum of American History. There was an exhibit on technology through the ages, and in one case they showcased the evolution of audio players: a record player, a walkman, and then an iPod. Lo and behold, the cassette tape in the walkman was...Pretty Hate Machine.

Bob Dylan Thomas Dolby Digital (http://www.avclub.com/users/bob-dylan-thomas-dolby-digital,80579/)
...the very limited and repetitive vocabulary (toss the words "I," "you," "decay," "hate," "whole," "pain," and "fuck" together and you'll likely win a round of NINGO), I've been irked by "the path we have chose [sic]." What, did "we both chose" or "that we chose" not fit?

Was just watching Deadmau5's live stream and he was just sitting there listening to Year Zero saying nothing. I got bored at Survivalism and turned it off haha.i

I just so happened to stumble upon this. I saw only part of the first hour. From what I saw, I gather that he was mostly testing and assembling the remix elements.

I started recording during the second hour. It was a 720p stream, so the file is massive.

He got sidetracked, but starts noodling with the Survivalism remix again at about 1:21 point. He starts creating basically a 25-minute Survivalism jam from the 1:36 mark until the end of the stream.

http://minus.com/lOg87HwSUn49Y

The FLV file is really jacked up because it's a live stream rip. Most FLV players fail on it miserably. I recommend downloading the 715 MB file, rather than watching it on that webpage. VLC's the only player I've found so far that works somewhat well with it. Seeking and random access are going to be spotty in the file.

Side note: This is my first time using Minus for file sharing. From what I've seen so far, it's pretty impressive, so I may have to look into it further. If you want to sign up for it, use my referral link, http://min.us/rffZyaN, and we'll both earn an additional 1 GB of space.

There is a fuckload of footage from inside there (the Gave Up video for example), so I'm not sure what it would reference.

BTW, that documentary is probably more bullshit than a whole farm of cows all shitting on each other in some sick cow scat orgy. Take it as a (poor) mockumentary and nothing more.

On reddit, there's a thread discussing the fact that Trent was flattered by Cash's cover of 'Hurt,' (http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/xi0pg/til_trent_reznor_was_flattered_when_johnny_cash) and this particular story made me laugh pretty hard:

Here's a true story. This song came out the day I had my wisdom teeth removed. I had come home and gone to bed, as the drugs had just completely floored me. I finally started to come to about 2 AM and started to hear this opening progression that I recognized (i had left my tv on). When I heard the lyrics, I was like, "cool. I love this song."

When I finally was able to look at the screen, somewhere through that wall of painkillers, I wasn't able to discern that it was Johnny Cash. Outside of any real logic that could take place, the only thing my mind could put together was that I'd slept for 50 years, and this was Trent Reznor performing his own music as an old man who was preparing to die.

I sort of freaked out and called a bunch of people, and no one was answering because of how late it was, and this was in an era that people didn't have their cell phones on them 24-7 (strange, right?). Still to this day, I'm tortured by the voicemails I left my friends. "What year is it? What happened to you? Why aren't you answering?!"

TL;DR Took vicodin, thought I time-travelled thanks to Johnny Cash.

A covers EP from Psychic Teens, free download, of 5 tracks from TDS, Broken and PHM. It's all one take stuff with a somewhat punk angle. Not the worse covers of NIN I've heard. There are some good moments, they could probably take one and really nail it down in the studio and it'd sound really nice.

In this months MOJO magazine, with David Bowie on the cover, they have a definitive list of their 50 best Electronic albums of all time.

The Downward Spiral is in there, the list is quite well done, and spans from 1956-2012.
Downward Spiral is 1 of 5 electronic records they chose from the 1990s along with Air, Aphex Twin, and The KLF. Considering how many electronica records came out that decade that's real priase. Other artists such as Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Throbbing Gristle, Donna Summer, Brian Eno are in the list too, its well thought out.
MOJO does not do lists too often. And its critics are usually really good writers. Its also biggest selling music magazine in UK and Europe so its a nice compliment.

I'm just reading my way through this at the moment http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/james+swallow/fear+to+tread/8683407/ (indulging in some Sci-fi nerdom). I knew the author was a bit of a fan of Trent because he tweeted while writing the book that he was listening to The Social Network Soundtrack but what did I come across about way the way through the book but a reference to a 'Captain Reznor' described as having 'a hawkish face framed by long black hair' ...coincidence I think not. Also possibly the weirdest little cameo Trent has had in a while.

There was a similar "appearance" of Trent in Joe Hill's (Stephen King's son) Heart-Shaped Box. The main character of the book actually meets Trent in a flashback.

I remember an interview where a band member (pretty sure Trent) mentioned being nervous as fuck before going on stage for Woodstock. Someone threw some mud at someone else, and a huge mud fight broke out among all of them. After that, they were all relaxed and ready for a great show.

It's nothing big, but I noticed Trent was in the "Thanks" section for Black Light Burn's new album. Not like it means anything, since he's not credited with anything technical, but I always wondered how the relationship was between Trent and Wes, or if there ever was one.

Wes said once that Trent gave him some very helpful advice when he was making Cruel Melody.

Also, from Borland's last.fm page:

At some point in 2004 as well, Borland was reportedly offered to join Nine Inch Nails as the band’s guitarist, replacing Robin Finck who left Nine Inch Nails yet again for Guns N’ Roses. Borland stated he wrote some material with Trent Reznor, but that the material is still unreleased. It is possible that this is due to the fact that he turned down the offer to officially join Nine Inch Nails to rejoin Limp Bizkit but isn’t confirmed by either Borland or the Nine Inch Nails crew.

In August 2004 or around, Wes Borland rejoined Limp Bizkit. Borland reportedly had to see for himself if he still was at odds with Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst before he officially joined Nine Inch Nails as the guitarist. They met one day and realized that they weren’t at odds with each other anymore, so Borland turned down the invitation to join Nine Inch Nails without friction from Trent Reznor, and Wes began writing with Limp Bizkit again.

Man, it makes me wonder what could have been. Maybe sometime in the future they'll work something out again. Maybe not, but eh, I like to speculate. It'd be great just to hear how some of that unreleased material sounded, though.

He also left Manson to rejoin LB. (http://www.mansonwiki.com/wiki/Wes_Borland)

Manson has criticized Borland's departure, confessing that "We almost made the mistake of having Wes play guitar but he re-joined Limp Bizkit. That move forever eradicated my feelings on his choices in life as an artist." When asked why he thinks Borland returned to Limp Bizkit, Manson said: "That is what I find myself asking when I urinate sometimes. He said he would never go back. If the reason is money, then I'd rather roll up a $5 note and shove it up my urethra. I'd rather set my dick on fire than join something that I hated."

In his defense, Borland retorted that "I wrote nine songs to be submitted to the Manson record and none of them made it. I was really in hired gun land there, but was sort of being told that I wasn't. So when I figured that whole thing out, I knew I was never going to get an inch into that band [...] but it's the Marilyn Manson show over there — Limp Bizkit is more of a band."

There is a difference, I think. With NIN, he probably knew from the start that this is gonna be just the live band. With MM, he went into studio to write stuff only to get it rejected (if it's true).

But even then I'd be ashamed to have been credited for anything on a Limp Bizkit album. If I was in the band I'd atleast of liked to have been able to say Fred Durst made me do it, it wasn't my fault!

Wes himself said that Fred met him in a room and convinced him to re-join LB. I remember back in 2009, I think, when he rejoined LB after his brief stint on MM, the band had covered "Hurt" and Durst gave an absolutely terrible performance. Wes then publicly apologized to NIN fans via Twitter: "I'm terribly sorry, I had no idea it would go south like that..."

Oh shit. I actually have a NIN-spotting to make.

I went to see this documentary called "The other F-word" today at the Gothenburg International Film Festival.
It's about punk musicians who've adapted their lives to parenting. Loved it. Well, half way through the film Josh Freese shows up with his little kids throwing diapers in the backyard. Check it out if you can, Duane Peters from the U.S. Bombs' story is pretty heartbreaking.

Great documentary, loved it!

Except that links directly to the post, not the copy & pastery of theprp. On your point of whether or not you like him after what he said... it's all perspective I think. He makes a pretty good point about smashing shit, and I'm sure if you ask Trent today, he'd say basically the same thing. Extrapolating smashing shit on tour to having helicoptering parents is kind of weird, but as far as being 'heavily sheltered' - Trent grew up in western PA in the 70s. He's said himself, there wasn't a whole lot going on out there.

The 'synth crap' line isn't all that unusual for a west coast guitar player. Look at the liner notes of Rage Against the Machine's Battle of Los Angeles - "There are no synthesizers on this record." Whoop-de-doo!

Buzzo's stories often have to be experienced live or on video. His dry sense of humor and deadpan anecdotes are often misunderstood, and when you think about what he's actually saying ($30,000 worth of damage to a brand new arena dressing room or Zombie trash talking), well, he's actually kinda telling the truth huh? Plus, why the hell should he be "thankful" in an interview 16 years later, how lame would a thankful interview have been? Buzzo's often been outspoken and humorously "bitter".

An old tradition, going back to the first seven Queen albums... because critics would hear Brian May's guitar sounds and mistake them for synths (which has also happened to Tom Morello) they put that text on the sleeves.

I've always thought it's kind of cute how people feel a need to clarify what is real and what is synthesized on their recordings. Like the "extra real drums" on Broken (which are probably the only "real" drums on the whole CD).

Apparently Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio, Maximum Balloon) just started a label called Federal Prism and the first release is a 12" Picture disc from Telepathe* of their song "Destroyer" (which I believe is the title track from their upcoming sophomore album). The b-side is a remix of that track from Trent/Atticus/Alessandro. Awesome?? Check it out:

*I've been waiting on a new LP from Telepathe since they released "Throw Away This" (http://rcrdlbl.com/2011/06/07/download_telepathe_throw_away_this), and the other samples they've released (http://soundcloud.com/telepathe) are just as promising. Hoping this means Destroyer's release is imminent!

I know Atticus has individually remixed Telepathe before (I'm sure sheepdean has link for that on his FYAR tumblr), but this has to be the first time these 3 gents have collaborated on a remix. They all do fine work on their own, so this ought to be pretty cool. When was the last time there was a remix by Nine Inch Nails or Trent Reznor? I remember this, too. I guess we finally know what he was up to! That, and I wouldn't be surprised if he twiddled a few knobs for the new Destroy Angels EP (or LP) - and *fingers crossed* has remix of them waiting to be released.

And here's "Destroyer" in its non-remixed form (http://soundcloud.com/fadermedia/telepathe-destroyer). Should still be a free d/l!

When was the last time there was a remix by Nine Inch Nails or Trent Reznor? There was the Zoo Station cover, but that was very much a cover.

after consulting ninwiki (http://www.ninwiki.com/Trent_Reznor) i would assume that his remix work for U2's 'vertigo' in 2005 was his last remix work...
unfortunately the official wikipedia is an even better place to look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trent_Reznor_discography#Remixes

and please also note the horrible misspelling of alessandro's name at the official site (http://federalprism.com/) :D

hey, sorry :D this was not meant to be a flame. i for myself edit the ninwiki sometimes.
what i meant was that i did not find a listing on ninwiki which can be compared to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trent_Reznor_discography#Remixes
i.e. specific listings/pages/articles/whatever for TR remixes/vocal contributions/instrumental contributions/production credits/writing credits/..... on ninwiki there is "only" one long flat list..

yeah, what he said. I'm a fan of Dave Sitek, and obviously of Trent, and I will be happy to support what looks like a cool new indie label in the future, but there's no way I'm paying 25$ not including shipping for a single from a band i never heard about before today.

The piano bit is sped up a bit and distorted. It also uses the distorted bass line with Trent's vocals in it. Other than the minimal drum beat, it's entirely pieces from the end of Right Where it Belongs.

So hypothetically, if Trent was ever like..."yo, that song is using my song" he could sue? Because that song is on iTunes?

I don't know how sampling works but why is he allowed to make money off of that? Unless of course the rights were cleared for the sample. 1st Round Records is Sam Adams (that Boston rapper kid) and I think he's big label affiliated.

How much of NIN's music has been used on trailers? I don't know how much control Trent has over the Interscope related stuff really... probably not a lot if the Lights In The Sky video was shut down so easily.
Good resource for samples by the way, here's a bunch of artists who have sampled NIN: http://www.whosampled.com/sampled/Nine%20Inch%20Nails/

I'm not an expert, but I believe that he stopped using so many samples because of how expensive had become to use them in the early/mid 90s.

If I remember well, he complained about how expensive was to use the sampler from "Fire" in "Lunchbox", and how he mostly wouldn't use samples anymore on his next albums beacuse of this ("The Fragile", "With Teeth" or "YZ" don't have as many samples as "PHM" or "TDS" afaik, and I remember when he explained how using a Public Enemy's sample in a Saul Williams song had cost them almost 10.000$). I would assume that these days he barely uses samples except if they are free, really cheap or essential for a song (bioshock/youtube sampler, Hussein sampler, Mothman sampler, etc).

I also remember how he said that he didn't mind if someone used a sample from one of his songs, but how it also depended of how much was used, because if somebody used a lot of "Down In It" (he cited this particular song) for a rap song with a guy just talking shit above his music, it would be very different to just using some sampled noise or something like that. I don't remember where I read all of these things, but I guess that it was in the articles section from The NIN Hotline.

My guess is that these days he wouldn't ask for money if he really liked the artist sampling his music or if the artist was a friend, but otherwise he should ask for money the same way he has to pay if he wants to use a sampler from someone else. 25 years ago the use of samplers was very different, this is why he used many more samples in the past.

Haha nice catch! Busted it seems. I actually know Yonas on a somewhat acquaintance level (did some vocal referencing/writing for a little through the producer of his last LP). I tweeted at him out of excitement because I'm a huge NIN nerd and get excited whenever I know someone who likes NIN but didn't get a confirmation on whether it was the sample or not (clearly it is).

I think The Fragile would be better as an album if it had at least one or two really strong "single material" track. Singles are not always a bad thing. Closer being so ridiculously catchy is something that sort of holds TDS together better. The second disc of Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness wouldn't be that awesome if it weren't for 1979 - arguably its biggest single - being there.

I think WITT is one of NIN's best singles, and Starfuckers was also really catchy and a good single too, even Into The Void was a good single.

The problem (commercially) for The Fragile was that it was a double album full of instrumental and too experimental songs compared to the stuff that was popular back then when nu-metal, poppy boy bands and teenage singers had taken control of the music media. The Downward Spiral would have never been a success if it had been released 5 years before or 5 years later, it succeeded because "alternative rock" was popular then, otherwise I doubt it would have sold so many copies.

but I missed this one where apparently he is back in (http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2012/07/25/htc-forgets-about-dre).
So there's that.

Just a couple tweets earlier in the year when he said he's making music for HTDA - this could've been before they decided to do EP2, so don't know which release it will be on. http://fuckyeahatticusross.tumblr.com/tagged/the+bug

Totally missed those at the time, cheers.

Reznor and NIN was name dropped quite a few times in this article.

Deconbrio brings Nine Inch Nails-inspired industrial sounds to Walloween

Trent Reznor may be busy remaking Led Zeppelin songs these days, but that doesn’t mean the industrial brand of metal he pioneered with Nine Inch Nails is considered passé.
Not locally, at least. Thanks to Danny Rendo and his band, Deconbrio, industrial is alive and well and headed to this weekend’s Walloween festival at The Thirsty Turtle Pub in Maryville. On a path that took him from Florida to the West Coast to East Tennessee, Rendo has taken inspiration from Reznor’s music and turned it into his own project.

On Sunday, October 21, 2012, on Ovation (http://ovationtv.com/), episode 106 of "Song By Song" will air, titled "Johnny Cash: Hurt". Synopsis:

"One of Cash's final and most unlikely hits, this painful ballad was written and first performed by superstar Trent Reznor; the Nine Inch Nails front man explains why he was reluctant to allow Johnny to record the song."

I watched this tonight and despite that description, there was no Trent Reznor explaining anything. They showed a super old PHM era picture and mentioned him a few times. Also, Ben Folds seems to think cash's cover is Trent's greatest accomplishment.

Trent's comments on Cash's cover is found on “Works of director Mark Romanek” DVD. I'll rip it if you can't find it.

Tried to post whole article, but at was more than 10,000 characters, it was too long...

Most interesting point for me is the comment about getting ripped off by UK distribution company, though they don't elaborate on it. Are we talking Topspin?

No, Topspin is based out of Los Angeles, IIRC - I imagine the bankrupt UK distributor was related specifically to TGWTDT:DE

Saw a trailer for Red Dawn this weekend, and playing over it was a fairly heavily distorted version of The Wretched. Between that, The Avengers, and Terminator Salvation, that's three big movies that have used TF tracks in their respective trailers. Pretty damn sweet.

The Wretched appears in this trailer as well:

Thanks for the offer and the tip. I'll see if I can find that. I'm sure someone's ripped it somewhere. :)

My dismay was more about the content description for the song by song episode. It made it seem like Trent was interviewed for the show and that he would be featured prominently. There were a slew of songwriters that talked about Cash and the song but none of them are credited in the episode description. It was just weird.

I think he might be referring to the Dragon Tattoo debacle with Sandbag. If I remember correctly, Topspin actually had to step in and take over because Sandbag didn't know what the fuck they were doing.

(pretty sure it was Sandbag; that was a while ago so i'm not 100% on that)
