View Full Version : Upcoming Trent Reznor "Hard Drive" Radio Show Interview ALL WEEK LONG

Hazekiah

Happened to catch the tail end of a radio DJ's announcement on the local rock station earlier today that Trent Reznor would be interviewed on "Hard Drive" all next week, which I'm assuming is starting tomorrow but I suppose could still be a week from now.

I don't listen to the radio much and had never heard of it but I found the Hard Drive website (http://www.harddriveradio.com/) and there doesn't seem to be any mention of it just yet.

Got THIS at least and cleaned it up a bit:

I had the same thought, but they simply said "Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails" so I thought it best to leave it here for now.

Considering TGWTDT has its home video release On Tuesday, the primary focus of the interview is likely promo work for it. I'm sure there will be talk of other things, but I think Dragon Tattoo has got top billing here.

Thanks, that seems pretty reasonable.

*Sigh* I wasn't intending on getting anything started here. I just read the post differently than its intention. When I read, "I had the same thought" and then, "but they simply said 'Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails,' I figured it was a cancellation of sorts. Like, "Yeah, I thought about that, but they addressed him as Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, so I'm not so sure." The point of my post was that Trent IS of Nine Inch Nails, so whether they say he's a part of HTDA, or not, that's his most recognizable outlet and would draw more people in that way.

Because it would get abused. If you dislike something strong enough, there's always the 'report post' button.

The show hasn't officially started yet but I'm already listening to the radio anyway and the DJ just finally confirmed that Trent Reznor's weeklong stint on "Hard Drive" officially begins TONIGHT.

Turn on, tune in, and drop out, motherfuckers!

Looks like it's usually on at 7 CST and 8 EST, but in my area at least it's been pushed back till after "Rock Line," however long that is.

Plus, it's almost 9 and "Rock Line" still hasn't started so who knows, lol.

It might already be streaming but I'm having fun working out in the garage with the radio on so I wouldn't know, sorry!

Amy and a couple guys from Evanescence are the guests on "Rock Line" tonight and she just mentioned NIN as an influence on their sound, which prompted the host to mention both Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross by name and how glad he was that they won an Oscar for their work on "that Facebook movie." Nice little lead-in. Looks like "Hard Drive" starts in about half-an-hour at 11:30 CST, btw.

Not an actual radio, right?

Also, why are radio station streaming options always so fucking terrible? Yes, more shiny flash and buttons with reflections and stupid shit. That's what we need.

Well, "Hard Drive" just started finally and the first song is by Jane's Addiction.

Seems promising.

But, yeah, I'm just passing along what the DJs on the local rock station have been saying, which is that Trent Reznor is on the show starting TONIGHT.

Wouldn't be the first time they've been wrong, we'll just have to wait and see!

Not a problem! I've plugged in a radio by the computer and already have a sweet set-up in the garage so I'm just running back and forth between both while catching up on message boards inside and working out inside like I would've been anyway, so it's all good.

And I almost never listen to the radio otherwise so it's kind of refreshing and reassuring to hear some new decent stuff mixed in with the rest of the garbage to remind me why I miss it every once in a while AND why I still hate it the rest of the time, lol.

But we're almost half-an-hour in and no mention's been made of Trezzie yet, so I'm assuming they might just be dropping a few snippets from the interview as samples all week long before playing the whole thing on the 24th, possibly.

Either way, it's my pleasure...no worries.

UPDATE:
REZNOR APPEARS ON TOMORROW'S SHOW,
TUESDAY THE 20TH.

And that's straight from the actual host of the show at the end of tonight's episode, not some misinformed local DJ retard.

And you can also use their supercool and easy-to-use hotline, (877) MUSIC-11, to make requests, dedications, and submit questions and comments and stuff.

You can also even call them after a show to file a concert report they might broadcast. Pretty cool feature and not too bad a rock radio show, all in all. I'm gonna save that shit on my phone and make a point of calling them after any awesome concert I go to from now on just for the hell of it, lol.

Anyway, sorry for the false alarm tonight.

Let's hope things go better tomorrow!

On a related note, I've got a pal on suicide watch all of a sudden and have to skip out for a couple hours right now to go help. I made a bunch of requests and dedications and left potential questions on that hotline last night and it would be MASSIVELY appreciated if anyone out there could record the episode for me somehow! My pal's okay and I left just in time to hear "The Dope Show," but nothing much else of note has happened yet, right?

Well, I'm listening now anyway.

:)

EDIT: So did I miss something earlier? I only heard the last hour-and-a-half or so but I'm worried they might've pulled the same shit again and simply mentioned him at the end of the episode, lol.

I did get to hear them promote Manson's appearance with Rammstein and the release date of Born Villain at least, I guess.

I started listening to XL last night right at 9 pm (CST) on the Abliene, TX station (from website). They played some song, then introduced Trent, then asked if he read the Dragon Tattoo book and scoring. He gave an answer that we all heard a million times. The DJ then played Closer, then I think System of a Down. I couldn't take it anymore, so I turned it off. It seemed to be pre-recorder stuff.

Thats disappointing. I understand giving interviews your going to repeat stuff (interviewer and interviewee) but can't some interviewers do SOME research if they're getting talent on the show? Come on, "did you read TGWTDT" and more questions about scoring? Its been covered ad nauseam as of late. I understand this is the case with TR, or any famous person for that matter, you'll get repeat question after repeat question, but come on, you dont have to search hard to find out he has a new album coming out! Plus with the lack of interviews as of late, why wouldn't you jump at the chance to have some "breaking" news?

Ugh, sorry just venting.

Hazekiah
03-21-2012, 11:43 PM
Well, not a peep about Trent Reznor yet tonight but they just started playing "I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)" so at least it's all worthwhile already.

EDIT: And it was the uncensored album version, no less!!! And then they mentioned Trent Reznor coming up later, played some other shit, and then "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Just keeping you updated.

Haha, they just had a commercial on the local station where this local franchisee started pimping himself out and he started with "Hi, I'M RANDY HERPEL, OWNER OF LUBEMASTER AND I'D LIKE TO INVITE YOU..." and I didn't hear the rest 'cause I was too busy LOLLING about as loud as I ever have in my entire goddamned life.

Ahh, good show tonight.

Oh, jebus, I just heard it again. Their slogan is actually, "Where we treat YOURS like it was OURS," lol. And ZOMFG his satisfied customer who's a female nurse assures us that, "IN BETWEEN 'normal' maintenance, Lube Master goes ABOVE AND BEYOND," ahahahahaha.

Hazekiah
03-22-2012, 02:30 AM
So they just did the 30 second "Featured Artist" thing with Trent Reznor, and it was definitely a "canned interview," lol.

I don't remember the question that probably wasn't asked anyway, but Trent talked about how preparing the music for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo so early in the process gave Fincher and his editors the freedom to try different ways to edit around it but that it was more challenging for Trent and Atticus because afterward they had to write final music for scenes which had already had 5 pieces of music laid over them, and then how they'd made music like set dressing which would fit in the world Fincher was making before they had to go back and make it work.

Or something like that.

Then the host mentioned later that one of his favorite bits of NIN trivia is that The Downward Spiral was recorded in the Tate mansion and that Reznor didn't know which house it was when he bought it, but then took the door when they were going to tear the place down and that now it's the door to the studio in New Orleans.

Do we even know for sure if that's still true? Just made me wonder.

Anyway, the host mentioned there's more Trent coming up on tomorrow's show.

At least these posts are informative, who wants to sit there listening to a radio station for a week just to see if they are actually going to keep their word and have Trent on. This station seems to be run by monkeys from what I am reading here.

So, basically, the "interview" consists of 30 second snippets spread out over the week, covering questions and topics that have been retread a million times. Is that about it?

While it certainly seems like the prize wasn't quite worth the chase this time around, I appreciate the effort Hazekiah has put into this. Everything pointed to this being a decent lead and if it had been a revealing interview providing new information, everyone would be begging for an audio recording.

Case in point, the following items would not likely be in circulation now if some particularly unlikely leads weren't chased:

Night of Nothing, Irving Plaza live video
Closer (behind the scenes footage)
WITT (Mark Pellington Edit) music video
Into The Void (Walter Stern Edit) music video
Last (Butch Vig remix)
So thanks for putting the time in.

^ Thanks for the support! I'd hate to have simply passed the info along and put it off on everyone else to follow-up on it. Especially since it's so many hours of listening each night! And it was nice to be able to provide a bit of a scoop for everyone, even such as it was. Glad to help in any way I can.

Plus, I'm old enough that I still remember the days when it was a big deal to hear a random single from NIN hit the airwaves, let alone pieces of an actual interview! Different times, I guess. Hell, I used to scour the binders of order forms for upcoming releases every time I dropped in a music store just in case they were cranking out another single or e.p. somewhere or something, and even watched the Grammy Awards start-to-finish just in case Trent Reznor was there only to see the announcement of his winning for "Wish" scroll by in text at the end of the show. And I was still excited just for that!

I know it's all a bit more of a "gimme" now, but it's still worth tuning in to check...you never know.

Anyway, last night they played another interview snippet on "Hard Drive."

This time he talked about "Immigrant Song" specifically, mentioning that David Fincher approached him with idea of doing that song in the first place, also suggesting female vocals for the track. Reznor then pointed out that he's learned not to immediately turn down ideas so he started down the long road of getting to a finished song purely out of trust in Fincher, not knowing then whether it would be for the end credits or opening titles or what, and at the end of it he had a great song he never would have embarked upon on his own, so we should chalk that one up to Fincher.

Then they played "Head Like a Hole" and that was pretty much it for NIN for the night.

Although the host mentioned another appearance from Trent Reznor is still coming up on tonight's show, of course. And they also mentioned Manson's performance with Rammstein and the upcoming release of Born Villain before playing "No Reflection," after already playing the radio edit of "The Beautiful People" earlier, so it was still a pretty fun episode.

http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instances/400x/16847080.jpg

I should clarify that the host didn't bring up that bit of trivia as a part of the interview, he just mentioned it as a quick aside between songs several minutes following the brief audio snippet of Trent Reznor talking about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, after they'd played "The Hand That Feeds" and gone to commercial and come back.

Speaking of which, is that front door from the Tate mansion still down in New Orleans or did he take it with him again when he moved? Still curious if there was ever anything further said about that.

And that's exactly what the interview (which I believe we've already heard broadcast somewhere else) said.

"I'm going to be writing for Nine Inch Nails this year. It's one of the things I am going to go. I don't have any particular goal in mind other than, I think the rest that I've given my voice as a songwriter has fueled a need to speak up, partly work out a little bit to not atrophy. And I feel motivated. I think I have something to say that feels unique to who I am right now. And that's when it tells me, OK, it's time to do something. And I thought that I ought to maybe do it under a different name or just under my own name. But I think, at the moment, it's going to live in the Nine Inch Nails column for a few reasons. Because I kind of enjoy the challenge of moving that kind of brand forward, that identity, of shaping it to who I am now, of who I was a few years ago when I last left off. We'll see. I mean, it's all kind of hypothetical right now. When I sit down with a notebook and a little mini recorder is when my bluff will be called. And then it may not happen at all."

Sorry, I'm not very techie so it was already enough of a time-consuming hassle to listen, tape it, transfer the tape to a computer, and then zip and upload the resultant file that I was just plain too damned tired and/or drunk to bother with it any further and just left it As Is before finally quitting for the night immediately after posting.

Normally, I totally would've transcribed it right off the bat, I promise.

You only had time to deliberately mislead everyone? According to your tone on this page, you were enjoying fucking with those of us who didn't have time to listen to it ourselves. I've been coming to this thread when I wake up and again when I go to bed to see if anything important had been said, and up to this point I was loving how much effort you were putting into letting us know what was up. Until you pulled that stunt. Do we have a shitlist on the new ETS?

Yeah seriously, as much as a lot of us appreciate you putting up with the stupid radio show yanking us along for a week, throwing up an audio link and implying that Trent said "WELL NIN MAY OR MAY NOT HAPPEN" with absolutely no context is the shittiest thing you could do.

What I get from the transcription (thanks jessamineny) is that Trent is writing with NIN in mind, but whatever he writes might end up being scrapped in favor of something else, or might just go to another project, but that NIN is probably the most likely option for the music.

Hazekiah
03-24-2012, 09:38 PM
And I'VE enjoyed the experience, a few rude assholes in this thread notwithstanding.

I was simply explaining that I only had so much time to screw with it before I had to catch some sleep myself and why I didn't go into a verbatim transcription or even the summaries I'd made of the previous installments. That takes TIME, and all that time and energy was devoted to actually letting people hear the excerpt for themselves this time around, which was more than a bit of a pain in the ass for someone who's "not a techie," such as myself. It took forever and was a massive exercise in frustration; I barely held on long enough to wait for the damned thing to upload the billionth time I tried.

In short, I assumed the clip would speak for itself and that anyone who cared enough about the details would simply play the damned thing if they wanted to know wtf was going on. That was kind of the whole idea going through all that trouble in the first place, after all.

Like I've already explained:

I figured the people who care would click through to hear the full comment only to receive a pleasant surprise while, likewise, people who hate on latter-day NIN wouldn't get the good news they don't deserve anyway.

Pretty staightforward.

Not exactly "fucking with those of you who didn't have time to listen to it yourselves" either, btw. If you got your panties in a twist without even hearing something in its proper context when it was supplied for you in the very same sentence then you have no one to blame but yourself. It was a thirty second answer and the audio was RIGHT there. Maybe you should think about calming down and collecting yourself before blowing a fuse over nothing next time. Or maybe you should relax a little and try to enjoy a nice, relieving surprise occasionally. Did the world end? Did Trent destroy NIN for all time? Do I need to kiss your boo-boo? No, no, and no? You just got some free audio of Trent Reznor confirming he intends to work on new NIN instead? That's awesome! Glad to hear it! What a beautiful day it is outside!

And you're welcome for the audio I provided, btw.

Enjoy.
