So I haven't seen a thread for this yet, and I usually end up finding a lot of good music here thanks to threads like this, so I figured I'd start her off. I feel that 2012 has been amazing for music thus far. Here are some of favorites:

Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
Grimes - Visions
Frankie Rose - Interstellar
Arrange - Five Years With the Sun EP
Islands - A Sleep and a Forgetting
The Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know

Yeah, the last thread really opened my eyes to some amazing stuff!

2012 hasn't been good for me tough since I can barely name any releases that got my attention yet while I'm still overseeing the stuff I got hold of in 2011. I'm looking forward to some stuff though, so 2012 has a chance to become an amazing year.

Only record that I instantly fell in love with this year: Mark Lanegan Band - blues funeral

Not much has really grabbed my attention thus far either. So far I've been digging:

A Place to Bury Strangers - Onwards to the Wall EP
Burial - Kindred EP
Alcest - Les Voyages De L'Âme
Swans - We Rose From Your Bed With the Sun in Our Head

This year should turn out amazing however. New Swans, Spiritualized and Orbital in the pipeline. Can't wait!

Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror
SPVCXGHXZTPVRRP - GXX XX BXXXK EP Vol. 1

Ooh, I second Beach House's Bloom. School of Seven Bells's Ghostory and Chairlift's Something complete the neo-dreampop trilogy, between those three records you'll have loads to space out to on moonlit beaches. Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music is phenomenal, so is Chromatics' Kill For Love. Lone's Galaxy Garden expanded my mind, Machinedrum's Nastyfuckk EP deepened his sound while still keeping it suitably frenetic. Addison Groove's album has been inspiring what I'm trying to produce these days.

ugh, i hate grimes. really bad throwback dreampop wanna be his name is alive without a shred of the talent. her voice tries so hard to be like the classics of the era (karen oliver, ali shaw, liz frasier), yeah right.

ahem.

records i like from this year:

led er est- the diver
and also the trees- hunter not the hunted
lebanon hanover- the world is getting colder
tropic of cancer- permissions of love
she past away- berlirdi gece
heinrich dressel- sighing melodies thru the graves
alcest- les voyages de l'ame
garbage- not your kind of people (rules)
chromatics- kill for love
a place to bury strangers- onwards to the wall (followed by worship later in the year)

looking forward to what the ice choir cook up. loved their 7'' from last year, but i worry they're going a bit too far with the soulful abc thing instead of the emotive tears for fears thing...

also should be a new anasazi single or two this year, via sacred bones. straight up solid deathrock with great hooks and nice synths. will be back with names & full recommendations when they're released.

Adding:

Motion Sickness of Time Travel - Motion Sickness of Time Travel
Spiritualized - Sweet Heart Sweet Light (sounds like a bit of a throwback to Jay's 90s sound to me, not a bad thing)
Death Grips - The Money Store (gives me the same feeling I had hearing The Prodigy's Fat of the Land and Jiilted Generation for the first time)
Wreck and Reference - No Youth
Nedry - In A Dim Light
Orbital - Wonky (massive return to form, easily the best since Middle of Nowhere)
Lee Ranaldo - Between the Times and the Tides (I <3 Lee)

ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER. ....REPLICA. Came out December 2011 but OH MY. I think we have found this generations Aphex Twin. Truly ground breaking forward thinking electronica unlike anything i have ever heard. When you listen to it, its like you are tripping out. Has a weird 360 degree sound thing going on which swoops over the back of your head and makes you feel sick.....some tracks are unbelievably beautiful. Others are so overwhelming intense its like being hit over the head with a brick repeatedly. It all sounds deeply druggy, you feel like you are being cocooned in a bubble when you listen to his music. It transports you.
It makes you feel sick its so out there....i expect a lot more musicians to follow this guys production techniques. Lots of samples its all heavy not in a harsh way but its quite a lot to take it. Very beautiful.

The Grimes album i did like,,,,,,but then it got very annoying. It takes off really well on some tracks. Her voice SUCKS though.
Death Grips album has a few good tracks but disappointing overall. Didnt really do much for me. Interesting ideas but missing something. Lost Boys was a good track though.

I really look forward to the new Salem record, i am also dying to hear a new Boards Of Canada record. Its been 7 years.

Beach House - Bloom. This is the perfect summation of their style. It's beautiful and mesmerizing, but not quite as thick as their previous three - it feels clearer, stronger, and more memorable than what they've done before. I'd like them to start expanding their palette a bit in the future, though, so they don't have to settle for making another Bloom, because I know they can do even better.
Grimes - Visions. This spent a lot of time in my ears for a couple months. She does synthpop so well, and I love the way she uses her voice, it's very unique and appealing.
Lana Del Rey - Born To Die. I still think this album is great. It was all I listened to at the beginning of the year. So simple and yet so good.
of Montreal - Paralytic Stalks. Welcome back, Kevin Barnes! This is his weirdest for sure, and it's not his best, but it feels like him again, where False Priest definitely tried too hard.
The Shins - Port of Morrow. I'm sure Animal Collective will knock it out of the top spot come September, but so far this is my album of the year. It's flawless, and not only that, it's Mercer's best. I've listened to it over a hundred times easily and I still feel barely qualified to explain why it's so awesome.
Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror. The album that proves they weren't just a one-trick pony. It's simple music, but so much fun, and they're already getting better.
THEESatisfaction - Awe NaturalE. Probably you already know them from their guest spots on Shabazz Palaces' excellent Black Up from last year, and if you liked that you'll like this; their sound is not quite as inspired, but hearing them sing and rap together as a unit is refreshing. They make a great team and I can't wait to hear what's next for them.

The new Death Grips is fun, but I'm not sold on the whole thing; it also sounds way too lo-fi for its own good, especially considering their previous record, Exmilitary, is so much clearer-sounding and rich in detail.

Right now, even though I'm not really into new music these days. The only new records I like are the new Spiritualized and Beach House albums. That's it. I'm mostly into older stuff these days like Spaceman 3, King Crimson, Jeff Buckley, George Harrison, older Spiritualized, and Kraftwerk at the moment.

What I've really enjoyed so far. These all stood out to me.

Ancient Sky - T.R.I.P.S. (Catchy psyche rock. Really good shit.)
Death Grips - The Money Store (I like it better than Exmilitary and I loved that album.)
Evan Caminiti - Night Dust (Ambient/drone from one half of Barn Owl. Here he ditches the Earth/amplifier worship and creates something closer to something that Fennesz or Tim Hecker would make.)
Father John Misty - Fear Fun (Ex-drummer of Fleet Foxes, aka J. Tillman. Sounds nothing like Fleet Foxes or his old stuff. Just a fun album.)
Lilacs & Champagne - Lilacs & Champagne (Instrumental sample based hip-hop made by the guys from the band Grails. Reminds me of Madlib. So good.)
Paco Sala - Ro Me Ro (Experimental and atmospheric electronic music with ethereal female vocals on most of the tracks.)
Torche - Harmonicraft (Catchy as fuck. Heavy as fuck. What more do you want?)
Turing Machine - What Is The Meaning of What? (Highly recommended for fans of anything on the DFA label or Maserati. This is the last record Jerry Fuchs recorded on before he passed. R.I.P.)
Whirr - Pipe Dreams (Shoegaze. Not super original but it's really really good.)
Worm Ouroboros - Come The Thaw (The drummer from Agalloch with 2 female bandmates. Don't know how to describe it - it's dreamy and haunting.)
Zammuto - Zammuto (Experimental pop from one half of The Books. This might be better than any Books album.)

kiss the anus of a black cat- weltuntergangsstimmung

this one is WAY up there for me...just heard it yesterday and making it a morning routine. a mix of coldwave, neofolk, and straight up solid songwriting with nice electronic edge, without doing anything too retro-synthpop. well worth checking out, despite the obnoxious band name.

I would argue that Amanda Palmer has become one of the most annoying people in music since that initial Dresden Dolls buzz subsided, and has one of the worst fanbases. That shit where she just milked her fans to fund her record is disgusting, considering she's married to Neil Gaiman! I'm not saying he should 100% subsidize her career, but someone in her position using a Kickstarter is pretty crass imo. Also, she's not shocking or edgy, please just sit down, and shave your pits.

This is awful.

I'd like to make some points about how even well-established musicians these days must constantly struggle with finding a balance between staying true to their art while also finding a way to survive off of it and feed their families, or how being married to a well-known author doesn't mean you are set for life and can funnel all future tour and recording costs through him (because authors don't get paid much either, unless you're Stephen King or Stephenie Meyer), but then you dropped that last little gem in about her armpits, and I realized you're just trolling.

...and he didn't get that way by making investments that are practically guaranteed to lose money.

Not sure why everyone's so up in arms about her Kickstarter project. Seems reasonable to me. Einstürzende Neubauten's been doing a similar business model for ten years. Plenty of grown adults thought it worthwhile enough to plunk down their cash, so what's the problem? Still beats the old major label way of doing things all to hell. Her "beer and hugs for payment" stunt was utterly crass, but she's come around and said she's sorry and, more importantly, started cutting cheques so can we cut her down from the torture rack already? Jeez.

Holy Other - Held

almost certainly my favorite album this year so far

I'm warming up to this album. Not that I dislike it, but I think it's definitely one of those records that needs the right setting (night) to be fully enjoyed. Also, I found Holy Other to be a lot more enjoyable live, not because he's a great performer or anything (though it was cool to see him layer sounds in real time), but because his music is clearly meant for a "real" sound system.

Speaking of Holy Other and 2012 Recommendations, I saw Amon Tobin's ISAM 2.0 live show and was blown away by his new Two Fingers material. I picked up the limited tour edition of the "Stunt Rhythms" 3xLP (http://i50.tinypic.com/2nl7as4.jpg) (which I got signed after the show!) and it's fantastic - again, it's the kind of stuff that just soars live, but it's no slouch on record (http://soundcloud.com/bigdadasound/sets/two-fingers-sweden-b-w/). Opening track "Stripe Rhythm" is superb. The album as a whole is like ISAM's more aggresive, beat-driven cousin.

Pig Destroyer's new one is blowing my fucking brains out. This is good, intelligent, amazing metal that's the aural equivalent of... well, I dunno, just read this excellent review.

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17255-book-burner/

(I don't know what's happened to Pitchfork lately, but they've been having great metal coverage...)

Don't usually listen to that sort of metal as it tends to be a bit too a.d.d. for me, but the songs they had posted sounded pretty good. May have to give that record a proper listen.

It's a bit early now for me to assess which album affected me most this year, but the Storm Corrosion album has been the perennial favorite so far. It's hard not to write about this and not come off like a Steven Wilson fanboy (guilty as charged), but while this is yet another milestone in an incredible run of work he's done lately, this feels intrinsically both his and Mikael's. It has some of the best guitar playing (this track in particular) I've ever heard from Mikael.

Considering that almost every artist, musician or band that I love released either an EP, LP or soundtrack last year, I haven't heard much in the way of new music in 2012. The only releases that have caught my ear are:

Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion
Baroness - Yellow & Green
Astra - The Black Chord

Hopefully I can find a few other gems before this year's done.

Anyone here checked out dark horses new album 'Black Music'? It's rather good. Black Moth Super Rainbow's 'Cobra Juicy ' is delicious as well. And of course, there is Tame Impala's lonerisim.

I'm doing what will probably be a late-year tradition now, and take a few days to listen to the majority of the year's albums, including a few I hadn't gotten around too. Yesterday and today it's been Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Van Morrison and Mark Knopfler. Knopfler's Privateering was the real revelation, I like his solo stuff but this might be his best. It's a double album, but very little in terms of filler. He has some good hands playing on this too, specifically Kim Wilson on harmonica (former lead singer of The Fabulous Thunderbirds).

Tomorrow I'm going a bit harder-edged and esoteric with this year's releases from Black Country Communion, Rush (to my amazement, haven't gotten around to listening to that one yet), Astra (a very good psychedelic/prog/heavy band I've heard about just recently), The Pineapple Thief, Brian Eno, and more.

I'm looking forward to scouring this thread. It has not been a good year for new music, for me, yet. The only thing I can think of that would qualify for my "best of 2012" list would be Carter Tutti Void — Transverse. The only other thing I can remember vaguely liking this year was Orbital's Wonky, but not enough for a best of list… leaving mine at one item so far. Edit: http://publicservicebroadcasting.net/music/ ← first heard these guys this year, quite liked them, can't pin down what track it was but it was probably on BBC Radio 6 and thus a 2012 release.

This is fucking incredible!
