Hey, thanks! That's really good one. Last night I was listening to pretty much every notable recording of this song I've came across and I think I have three favourites including your bootleg. Although none of them is soundboard (I don't even think there is a soundboard rec. of Mr. Self Destruct), they sound really great. The problem is the song itself is really lound, fast and angry and the mics just don't keep up sometimes.

1. 2006, Champaign, Italy (http://reflectinginthechrome.com/shows/2006/20060210.html)
2. 1994, Columbus, Ohio (Hellraisers Bootleg) (http://greatwhitewonders.blogspot.cz/2012/12/nine-inch-nails-hellraisers.html)
3. 1994, Tampa, Florida (March Of The Devil Bootleg) (http://reflectinginthechrome.com/shows/1994/19941121.html)

No problem. There are also a couple of versions on YouTube that were made by pasting together bits of the song from the Appendage of the leaked Closure DVD. I didn't have time to play them and see how they turned out, but here they are:

I have another. What songs in particular would you recommend to someone, who is not used to that heavy NIN stuff. My best friend is listening to stuff like.. I don't know.. Sigur Rós, Efterklang, Kings Of Convenience, Frames, etc. Not sure how to describe it, but if I would play him Downward Spiral, he'll sent me to hell with this. So I'm asking for some, maybe more fragile songs? So maybe something of Fragile? Or Slip?

show him Still, for sure. then head backwards to the fragile (maybe even starting with the Right disc and then going to Left).

The big singles are often a safe bet, particularly in the '00s. I'd start him off with the Trentticus soundtracks and Still, then throw in stuff like Only, Survivalism, Sin and Hand That Feeds to transition into heavier material via the accessible end of that spectrum, then Fragile Right.

So what Everson said, basically...

After watching that early Option 30 video of Trent, where he's super 80's and whatnot,
I started wondering where all of this darkness even came from.
I guess that's my "random nin question".. What sparked what eventually became a 25 year hellride, full of angst and despair, and
why hasn't it, for the most part, relented? I understand YZ is a shift from that, but then it gets right back at it with the slip,
and I can only assume from an album titled hesitation marks, that this isn't going to be much different..

Not that I'm complaining, I find TR's work to be some of the most compelling shit I've ever heard, I'm just wondering where
the path down that sad/angry road started..

Since I'm ordering things from US to Europe all the time I can tell you that the lowest price for shipping is about 8-10$, which isn't that much if you ask me (it's pretty much the same price as domestic shipping in my country). It's called something like "Standard international mail shipping" without any fancy stuff like insurance and it will probably take some time to deliver, but it will work. Also with price about 25$ I think you would be free of any custom duty taxes, so 35$ should be the final price

Oh and thank you for the shipping info.Last time I ordered something from the US,the lowest shipping rates were pretty expensive and since that I don't trust US shipping that much.

Does anyone know what the sound quality is like on the regular TDS vinyl vs the picture disc release? I know Trent wasn't involved with the picture disc so I have no idea how it'll sound.

EDIT: Fuck it, I'll just both. That way I don't have to worry about the pic disc getting scratched :D

there's no picture disc on earth that will sound as good as the non-picture disc version; the fact that paper is stuffed into the grooves is pretty much a solid 'never going to sound good' indicator. (and TR wasn't involved with the non-picture disc release either, they're both label cash grabs.)

are you referring to the original promo only version that came out in '94, or the "back to black" reissue that came out a couple years ago?

i listened to it last month and it sounded fine to me. maybe not quite as dynamic as the original promo-only version (which i also have), but still darn good.

seasonsinthesky
07-26-2013, 09:52 PM
indeed i meant the 'Back to Black' reissue, but it's just the same as the original promo anyway.

since when is a perfectly high quality re-issue of an out of print album a cash grab? did trent not want the album out on vinyl? never got the upset behind that.

because they didn't even bother fixing the tracking errors? it's literally and exactly the promo that wasn't released properly in 1994, no alterations, not even the new remastering. why wasn't the promo issued properly when the album came out? it's a guessing game, but looking at the scant facts we have, it seems likely that errors such as the intros of IDNWT and Reptile being left on the ends of the previous sides would have prevented a details guy like TR from letting it out the door. all Island/TVT probably wanted to do in 2008 was slap that baby on the shelves because vinyl is the retro hot ticket item and they'll be damned if they won't have one of their classic '90s allstars roster (and TVT's biggest money maker) not represented on the returning fad (debatable, but i'm talking like the record label here). look at the care that went into preparing all the audio for The Fragile vinyl, or even just the PHM remastered vinyl — he separated Sanctified and SICNH, a segue that was obviously very carefully constructed using Piggy himself, because professionals adapt the album sequence to fit the delivery medium or you have a shit quality product that rips people off.

i also doubt, from his track record, TR would ever be okay a picture disc for a major LP. what crap. the whole deal is a waste of cash. (i'm sure the artwork looks nice, but that doesn't justify those prices. go buy those album cover flats from The Spiral to hang on your wall.)

I believe with picture discs, the actual grooves are pressed into a plastic laminate. The few I have all have very noticeable surface noise that's absent from their standard black vinyl counterpart.

Man, I remember reading about the Reptile ending but I didn't know IDNWT had it as well. So fucking lame. I assume the BTB release didn't bother to correct it either .__.

PHM's multis were never released, and as the album wasn't released in 5.1, there's no way to extract them either. WT's 5.1 tracks can be ripped yourself with a basic DVD ripper too, if you have the disc. As for the files, that's not allowed to ask for on here, but I'm sure google could help you :P

If I remember correctly, he referred to ticket sales. Why would he lie? Also, NIN have been getting a massive media coverage. Even for each new song they debuted live they got a featured article. Trent really left an impression from 2010-2012 while the band was on hiatus. New band, new releases, impressive HTDA tour, 2 award winning scores, etc. So there are a lot more people now who are curious about what he's up to now, even outside the NIN or rock fan base.

I'm sure that's partially based on things like web/social media tracking, aka things that didn't exist in the early-mid '90s. But I also don't think it's inaccurate.

I think that assessment is accurate enough. NIN's getting a different kind of publicity these days, because they've gone from a rising star to a resurgent classic band that's still doing new, interesting things.

can anyone tell me what specific show from the self destruct tour this is from? specifically from 1:10 onward... and is there a recording (audio at the least) of it floating around anywhere?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGWm06J3rg4

I did bit of a research on Mr. Self Destruct live versions, trying to find the best sounding version and I come to an conclusion that there isn't any. This is the only one soundboard recording of this song, every other are audience recordings and this song particularly isn't really suited for recording with mics in the audience. These are my favourite version but don't expect anything special.

Just read on the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter IMDb page that: Trent Reznor was approached about scoring and playing a minor part in the film, but the news leaked before the final decision and Reznor voted to pass on the project as the surprise element of his participation had already been lost.

Just DL'd the 2009 Hurricane Festival show. At the end of MOTP Trent says something like "maybe I was wrong about Germany all these years". He then talks about not playing any hits and for people to stick around if they like it. But says if they don't they can check out some terrible shit playing on another stage.

Two questions: the being wrong about Germany bit, is he referring to some shows they played in Germany a number of years ago and the crowd didn't really like NIN? I seem to remember people on here talking about something like that.

Second, anyone know if the terrible music he's talking about is referencing anyone in particular?

He seemed to always have bad shows in Germany, bad crowds, etc. Last time he was there he ripped into the fans who were dead and were wanting to see Rammstein instead and ripped on Rammstein for being a fire show act. That's what I remember from stuff he said after shows. Bad things just seem to happen whenever they went to Germany.

As for the other comment about terrible music, I think he's just talking about German festivals in general.

The thing about Rammstein must have been Hurricane Festival in 2005 where Trent couldn't understand that the whole crowd went apeshit for Rammstein. The show itself wasn't a bad one for NIN as far as I recall. I can't find a quote for that, but it made me wonder at the time since he put them on the Lost Highway OST (maybe as a favor for Lynch?).

Also in 2005 he came into trouble and even posting about it on nin.com with "die toten Hosen" (a popular German punk band) when they lowered their backdrop onto Trent's guitars when a thunderstorm hit Greenfield festival in Switzerland. It turned out it was the promoters fault but still a little shitstorm ensued between both bands.

http://www.nin-pages.de/6_25_05.jpg

At 2005's Area4 Festival Trent posted a video on nin.com with the notation that "Deutschland kann meinen Kugelsack lecken" (Germany can lick my ballsack), but no one knows what went down on that festival as the shows in Germany and other German speaking regions were critically acclaimed by music magazines all around.

http://www.nin-pages.de/kugelsack.jpg

Further he went on about that "awful summer" on nin.com access:

http://www.nin-pages.de/Access vom 26.06.05.jpg

Then I remember a post (on ets even as teitan?) where he went on about Germany's food, bad crowds at festivals and shitty festivals in general, but that seemed pretty hate fueled due to the events during that year.

2007 was where it all collapsed at the Rock am See Festival with the power failing (http://www.ninwiki.com/2007/09/01_Konstanz,_Germany) and at Austria's Frequency festival were Trent had to deal with unappreaciative fans of "the Beatsteaks" and "die Ärzte" (both very popular German bands) describing it as the "the worst performance and certainly the worst crowd of the whole tour by far". Read about it here: http://www.ninwiki.com/2007/08/16_Salzburg,_Austria. Funny side note: "the Beatsteaks" are actually NIN fans eventhough one might beg to differ judging from their horrible live cover of wish.

The other performance 2007 shows in Germany, Austria and Switzerland were pretty incredible from my point of view (despite the usual hecklers during hurt which he even stopped playing in Frankfurt) and the band seemed to have a jolly good time in Munich (a city they visited twice in 2007!) when they closed off the European tour with support from Alec Empire that year. hurt was cut from the set though so there was no NIN logo for the crowd.

So, Trent's aversion to Germany is more likely due to encounters with over entitled shitty local bands, their fans and greedy promoters. And I hope he knows what he's gotten himself into when he applied to this year's Rock'n'Heim festival where things hopefully will go smoothly for NIN this time around like it did at Hurricane 2009.

If this has been asked here recently, I've missed it. The only time I recall Nine Inch Nails having debuted new material (i.e., the "world premiere" kind of debut)live before a studio copy of it is available was 1991, when "Wish" was played at some of the Lollapalooza shows. All the Year Zero stuff had been officially leaked by the first time it was played live, as had the With Teeth material (if I recall correctly). Can anyone think of anything else that premiered live before a studio recording emerged?

EDIT: Fuck. I suppose "Non-Entity" and "Not So Pretty Now" count as well.

I think "Survivalism" was debuted live in Europe.

I think "Survivalism" was debuted live in Europe.
I THINK Survivalism was played the night after the radio debut. I'm not entirely sure, but I'm 75% certain that we got the radio rip beforehand.

Also, in response to the original question, 2005 was the last time we had debuts on tour. There were a couple of With Teeth tracks that were played at the small, small US shows in March, plus Not So Pretty Now surfaced on the arena tour.

EDIT 2:
Survivalism radio debut: February 16, 2007.
Survivalism live debut: February 19, 2007.

Chris Vrenna has some cool soundscapes in the game though (not to mention the main theme).

:edit: To clarify what Ben's saying, the .pk4 files which comprise Doom 3's mods (and data files, for that matter) can be opened with basic archive extractors like WinRAR (and I assume WinZip). Then you just browse through the folder structure until you find the sound files, I believe they're in the .ogg format.

What's been leaked of Trent's work for Doom 3, via the game's alpha version, is alternative sounds for some of the game's monsters and weapons. Give me a minute and I'll come up with a list...
-Monsters: Imp, Zombies (inc. Commando), Pinky demon and a handful for the Hellknight.
-Weapons: Fists, Pistol, Machinegun, Shotgun, Chaingun.
-Player: Pain, death, jumping, landing (all of these voiced, rather hilariously, by Trent).
-Misc: The first NPC you encounter in Mars Base says a weird little prologue to the game, out of character, when approached and queried (I think he says something about shipping containers in the final game).

I've heard that there is far more work than this in existence, sitting on a disc in some dusty corner of Id's office. We wouldn't have gotten even this much if the game hadn't been leaked midway through development.
As for the quality of the work, although it's been intimated that this was by no means Trent's ultimate vision, almost all of it is of a far higher standard than the sounds which ended up shipping with the game. The weapons sound punchier, the monsters more menacing. I do prefer the vanilla zombie sounds, though. And none of this is coming from me as a NIN fanboy - I've loved the leaked soundpack since before I'd even heard of Trent Reznor, it actually opened the door to NIN for me (alongside Fincher's Only video).

Not necessarily limited to nine inch nails, but when you have a situation such as The Slip and Hesitation Marks offered in multiple qualities, is what you're getting as a download from nin.com the same as ripping the disc on your own computer at the same quality, or is it somehow considered better? I understand that a lossless rip of the disc should be equal to another lossless rip, but is the lossless version supplied directly a rip of the disc itself or the "source code" for lack of a better term?

I'm not very savvy on the tech part of this. Usually I'll always make my own lossless rip, but with the Slip I've always used the lossless file from nin.com despite owning the disc. Track specific artwork aside, I've always felt that since it's directly from the horse's mouth it would be how it's "supposed" to be.

in the case of NIN, you're likely right about the idea of the 'source code'. specifically, there are two major benefits: you can get higher-than-CD-quality files (like the 24-48 downloads for HTDA), and by avoiding the CD ripping stage, you avoid any errors caused by your disc drive or the software used to grab it (like iTunes, ughhhh). granted, most errors that may occur during a CD rip may be inaudible, but that's a bit like saying MP3 compression doesn't matter because you can't hear the difference from the higher quality version — the differences are there whether we personally detect them or not.

Does anyone have the video of Nine Inch Nails doing The Hand That Feeds on "Top of the Pops" or a similar style show? I remember him wearing a white shirt and sunglasses and I'm pretty sure Trent and the band had to lip sync their performance since that was the format of the show concept.

Right, I know it's not a wig. It just looks like this new current version of TR is playing a show wearing a sloppy black wig on his head!

I'm sick of this.

Only the first USB was found in a bathroom, in Portugal. The rest were all taped to barriers etc around the venue (I know because I was there when two of them were found).

Nobody "gave out" USB sticks at any point either. It's just sheer sexual luck that on the night the Survivalism video was leaked, every single copy was found by an ETS member.

that sound is part of the title track (it continues through the verses, it's just hard to hear under the loud drums and bass). since we haven't heard it from somewhere else, you can't call it a sample. if we recognized it as a machine sound from some movie (see: "Reptile" intro), then it'd be a sample.

it's entirely possible it's sampled from somewhere, but nobody has realized it yet.

Does it seem like there might be some manipulation that TR does with his voice on his newer releases? IE, his voice seems much deeper in live performances and especially in speaking, whereas on studio recordings it seems like some of the bass may have been shaved off his vocals. His vocals on CBH and COA sound pretty similar to TF, and even moreso WT/YZ, whereas his live voice definitely has a bit more bottom end to it.

Or maybe it's just me.

Was Still the first recording of Trent's sobriety or was it recorded before his rehabilitation?

r_z

There are songs on there that stem from recording sessions for The Fragile. So, while the live recorded songs may be the first "sobriety recordings", the bulk of the studio versions are most likely recorded before his rehabilitation (same as "Deep", probably).

1: It's pretty standard to cut low frequencies so they don't interfere with the bass and kick. When on tour, they'll do this, too, but every venue will differ in the acoustic of the room and quality/placement of the PA.

2: When recording in the studio, it's possible to strain your voice slightly to get the sound you want, but you can take a break at any time. In a live setting, since there's no break aside from the encore, he most likely sticks to a comfortable place for his voice so he doesn't run out of stamina 1/3 of the way through.

hobochic

Studio vocals can often be delivered through minimalistic and subtle "whispers" that can be enhanced in a way that a live scenario wouldn't allow.

Do people who got into NIN through Ghosts really exist?

I did. I was watching some documentary about artists using CC and such. In it, they briefly showed nin.com and explained how even bigger artists are trying to find different ways of marketing and releasing their music and they mentioned Ghosts I-IV. This had to be shortly after the album got released. I meant to check out NIN ever since I heard EL-P's (whom I've been a big fan of since his underground rap stuff in the 90s) remix of "Only" (I loved the way Trent sang the vocals and still consider it one of his best vocal performances on record) and that clip about Ghosts reminded me to do so. I downloaded the first installment of it and was blown away by the production. So I've downloaded the whole thing, which took me a few days to digest. I then returned to nin.com to witness the release of The Slip (happy belated) and also looked for the latest release before the two, which happened to be Year Zero.

What followed then was the usual routine when discovering new artists... you know, trying to get a hold of every album, single, remix, b-side and whatnot. I loved the music and I loved Trents sense for artistic integrity. However, I sense a growing indifference to the newer stuff Trent's doing, because while I still very much like the production, the esthetic of it all begins to tire me and I'm often wondering wether Trent really feels the way he makes us believe through his music or it's just his way to sell the stuff. I know this may sound stupid, but as a non-native speaker I'm afraid I'm not able to elaborate this better.

Anyway... Ghosts started my NIN fandom, so yeah, those people seem to exist!

Simple answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proximity_effect_(audio)
edit: well by simple, I mean simple for someone with a degree in sound technology
tl;dr - the closer a sound gets to a microphone, the bassier it gets. being that close to the microphone Trent uses means the bass frequencies are much higher.

IIRC someone asked him once in one of those Spiral chats, and he answered. It's also in his Twitter feed (just saw it when my Google-fu failed to find those Spiral chats), and it's even in ninwiki. So it's out there.

So I wonder if Still was written/recorded in 2002, or earlier. I've always looked at The Fragile as Trent's last recording as an addict, and With Teeth as his first clear-headed work, but I've never thought about Still or Deep in that context before.

Thanks gents. Forgive my lazyness.

Was well aware of the awesomeness that is ritc but didn't see the 09 web rips on there. Actually didnt even think of the 05 rehearsals until I came here to post my request and just kind of piled on. Totally forgot that old tour thread got imported. Really great of you guys to keep those links fresh after all this time. Much appreciated.

I havent checked in on the Year Zero ARG in a long time. Was there ever a connection made to the labels on exhibit 24? I was blown away when I saw I was on the ETS side and it had me as deceased. I didnt know if anyone ever made a connection to why you were either labeled deceased, missing, active or whatever they were?

I think it had something to do with whether or not one was a contributor of something that moved the game along? I'm not sure how they would've tracked that, but I recall that being the consensus at the time.

I was a "soft-target," and I was the one who realized the connection between the embedded fragments of text "Slaughterhouse-Five" and "Leaves of Grass" or "Slaughterhouse" and "The Hobbit"—whatever two came first—and got all crazy in that thread.

Or maybe it was all just dumb luck. I'm sticking with because "I made a contribution" because it makes me feel fuzzy inside.

EDIT: I checked in on NINwiki and that theory is far enough from official to not even be motioned. I just recall some soft-target folks being amped enough to want to put together a deck of playing cards made out of the list (there were 52 on the ETS list).

I have no idea if this fits here but...oh well. Well I was on my ipod and on the podcast app. There is a nin remix podcast that is on there and everything is free (BTW you can get Right Where It Belongsv2 on there). And a few weeks ago there was an awesome remix of Deep, I believe this remix was titled Deep (Into You). Imo it is a lot better than the original version, sadly, the remix is no longer there. If anyone knows if there is another place to get the remix, please let me know.

Well, I have a question, which I wanted to ask since I listened the "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm" of A Perfect Circle for the first time:

Who is singing this "ow, ow, ow, ow" phrase in this song? (available at 0:42, 2:49) Isn't that Trent's voice? It sounds like something similar to Trent's vocals from The Fragile...

When it came out, I was so fucking convinced it was a NIN remix, and flabbergasted to read in the liner notes that no, it wasn't. As far as I know, Reznor never touched that track. Now who knows if Keenan didn't try to facetiously (because maynard is facetious) emulate what a nin remix of Pet" would sound like... But he's more than capable to sound like that by himself, in my opinion.

Can anyone help me locate the soundboard versions of The Fragile and Hurt from the Bridge School Benefit show?

I know they're 99 cents on iTunes, but it won't let me buy them from the Australia store I'm locked into. PM, etc, please.

edit: Got The Fragile, just need Hurt.

edit: Thanks guys, all good now.

I'm a horrible fan obviously but I haven't watched any of the bonus stuff from the two movies, but:

Is TR's studio that we so often get to see a glimpse of located within his home or is that thing a separate building somewhere in LA?

I thought that I'd read in a post Social Network interview that he'd got a new studio elsewhere for reasons of space?? Can't remember where though

Thank you!
also, i believe Danny Lohner was the one who remixed that track, and considering Lohner's connection to NIN, it makes a lot of sense that the track would end up sounding this way. as for the vocal part you're referring to, i really don't know, but i believe all the vocals on that particular track were done by Maynard; i could be wrong though. Billy had started doing quite a few vocal parts when eMOTIVE came out.

..did the Blu-Ray of BYIT ever come in a slipcase or anything, or was it always just the ugly-ass normal blue case? Now that I have a halfway decent player I'd like to pick it up.

Just the normal case. The DVD was a digipack I believe. There was a Blu-ray sampler that came in a cd sized sleeve.

Doesn't look like it (http://www.nincatalog.com/index.asp?halo=22), but could be wrong. It's still well worth getting though.

Trent just posted a pic of him and John Paul Jones on facebook. I'm a big Zeppelin fan and I seem to recall somewhere reading that JPJ was mad for NIN and used to get a new lp and listen all day with headphones when it was released - but I can't for the life of me remember where I read this, anyone read this before or am I misremembering things

So what was the deal with Metal when it originally leaked? Was it from 1997 or so, in an unfinished state, then finished up in 2000 for TFA?

Is this the version that was around?

When and where did he make that public? And do we have a "why" he'd share that with everyone? TR doing that seems not in keeping with the very private man we've come to "know" over the years. I didn't look for it, but I didn't hear his first kid's name 'til 2011 maybe. Hell, again, I wasn't looking, but I didn't learn his other kid's name 'til the interview last week. It's common (in my experience with them at least) for addicts to be very public about their recovery so they can be held accountable. Accountability is a big part of the recovery process. Keep in mind that I've never been through rehab but I know a few people who have an that's been my experience. And regarding the original question - Still consists of reworked versions of old songs, a Fragile outtake, and some unused film score work so even if the album was recorded post sobriety, I'd still consider With Teeth his first post sobriety work since it's the first album that reflects his changed life.
