A full length version of this should have been included with the DEFINITIVE version of TF. Maybe we'll get it whenever the DEFINITIVE version of AATCHB/STILL comes out.

If I remember rightly it was because the record company were worried someone might upload copyrighted material (other than NIN?) and they’d be liable

No, that's not right. What happened was in Dec. 2016, they did a relaunch of the entire nin.com platform, coinciding with the release of NTAE and the definitive editions. The previous nin.com platform had been built-up since the Year Zero days and the technology was growing stale. The only major update had been moving the main webpage to a tumblr blog during the Hesitation Marks days. Major portions of nin.com had basically been on autopilot and were decaying, including remix.nin.com and the forums. With the modernization of the platform, they also changed web hosts, and everything from before was basically unceremoniously dumped, including remix.nin.com.

Damn, I really miss the whole nin.com from those years. I remember that it was very 'fan friendly', with our personalized profiles and the access to remix.nin. I have also been searching to redownload some tracks but the websites are dead so it’s definelty bc of the relaunch. Kinda feels like the burning of some part of NIN history. :/

Any word on if we’re getting Ghosts V & VI vinyl release??

Why is Quake the only Nine Inch Nails album without a Halo no?

In This Isn’t The Place, why is Trent saying Carrow me home? The sleeve lyrics read “Carry me home” but even in live versions he is singing “Carrow? / Carro? Carol??? me home”

that is all

That probably depends on whether or not any of the tracks contain material from the discarded score for The Woman In The Window. If they do, then Disney (who now owns 20th Century Fox) would most likely have to sign off on it. Might not be out of the question now that Trent & Atticus have worked for them and brought home some Oscar gold for one of their films.

Why is Quake the only Nine Inch Nails album without a Halo no?

It was never released on its own until last year, and since it's a game score, it has a Null number.

Hmm, maybe. If you listen here @ 17:55 though he is definitely saying “oh” rather than “ee” at the end of “carry” https://youtu.be/wg2v5vjz_H8

Care oh me home, maybe? Although that doesn’t make much sense. Maybe Trent just pronounces this particular word in a strange way. Just something I’ve wondered for a while but never asked, figuring it was some Bowie reference or something.

I think he's just playing with the word for effect. It could also be a reference to the nonsensical lyrics in "Subterraneans". Bowie pronounces "Caroline" in a similar way.

This article (https://www.theninhotline.com/archives/articles/manager/display_article.php?id=614) gives some idea of the production process for PHM, and you can corroborate and correlate it with the detailed production credits (https://www.discogs.com/Nine-Inch-Nails-Pretty-Hate-Machine/release/75544). Down In It was finished first, with some pre-production mixing done by Keith LeBlanc and then the production done by sending the tapes to Adrian Sherwood in London. After that, in early 1989, Trent spent a month in London with John Fryer at Blackwing Studios. They worked on a lot of the songs, but at the end of it, Trent wasn't happy (and didn't get along well with Fryer). So Trent had LeBlanc do another production pass on a lot of the tracks in New York after returning to the states. Flood worked with Trent in Boston on Head Like a Hole and Terrible Lie. I'm not sure when exactly that slots into the timeline, whether before London or after. And I believe in the end, after all the producers were done, Trent and Chris Vrenna worked together to edit and sequence the album including the transitions and segues to make it cohesive.

Tip-of-my-tongue question: I remember an interview/article with Trent about the Year Zero ARG that had a, well, ARG of its own: some paragraphs were missing and you had to fill them in yourself (I think using highlighted letters from the rest of the article). If you succeeded, you would unlock more information from Trent. Anyone has that link? And does the "game" still work?

So this is a hella random question. Also, it's been a while so, hello again! To everyone who purchased the March of the Pigs single before The Downward Spiral, was it weird to hear remixes of Reptile before actually being able to listen to the album version? This question never really dawned on me cause I bought the single after downward spiral but it's bugging me this morning. The only thing I can imagine liken it to, is when I had seen Closure before actually owning any albums. That being just being kind of immersed in this weird collection of soundscapes that made sense with all the random tour clips and segues between videos but being clueless of their origins. Anyway, that's that. Also, A Violet Fluid still rules. :p

interesting thought. There was a clip on some awards show where they were talking about the year in music and they played some clips from Woodstock '94 and there was one clip that caught my imagination fierce. Like, those 1.5 seconds were played over and over in my head because of the iconography and music combo. Imagine my surprise months later when I finally got Broken - TDS was when the band was 'big' enough to be known of in my neck of the woods - and I hear him yell "Slave screams!" and it immediately took me back to those 1.5 seconds because it turns out that was NIN at Woodstock.

It was the middle of track practice and I ran over to my friends and told them because I was so excited.

I had AATCHB on CD for a long time before I finally heard studio versions of pre-Fragile material. That was quite a shock, especially for PHM material.

Honestly, at the time it sounded funny to me. When Trent explained in interviews that it served as a sort of satire on gangsta rap, that made sense but it still sounded silly.

In the years since though, culture has shifted and now that song sounds kind of disturbing to me. The lyrics now read like an incel’s online manifesto before he shoots up a yoga studio or sorority.

When I heard it, I immediately took it as satire - portraying a man who is insecure and overcompensating. "I'm every inch a man, and I'll show you somehow." It was a weird messed up window into a man's mind when he's obsessed with how weak and insignificant he feels.

By the time TDS was out, I already had Under the Pink, and I knew Trent sang on that album. So it was a weird flip - considering Tori's Me and and Gun off Little Earthquakes, so I thought there was no way BMWAG was something to be taken literally.

Whoa, the fuck man, that's crazy! See that's why I always loved this place. Crazy jazz that should be lost to time somehow seems to materialize. Anyway, to the Big Man With a Gun discussion, I always felt a little weird about it. I dug the heaviness but it really kind of always felt too tongue in cheek to overshadow anything else on the record. That being said, when the album itself is a damn masterpiece, even the poorer bit must be good to some degree. Never once did I feel the need to skip, so it does it's job. I remember feeling super pumped about Startfucker Inc. when I first heard it on the TDTWWA single. That's definitely akin to that I guess. TDTWWA (Quiet) stole the show though. I remember showing that to friends of mine that hated NIN and even they were converted, even if it were for just a few songs similar in vein.

Well, there we have it. The band featured Eric Zimmerman, director of a couple of early NIN videos (DII and HLAH). TR is credited on the Crunch-O-Matic album with “additional data courtesy of”. Maybe he just handed his old mate some samples or something…

How many did you end up with? I haven't found something other than PGC Demux that works properly on everything (ripping from the .IFO file, not the .VOB). Here's Disc 1, some of them are copies, others are .subp files; there appears to be 22 "unique" audio tracks out of the 35 listed in the indices for both .IFO files. And no, these aren't accidentally the concert performance; the longest one is 1:59.29:

Yes also used PGC Demux. I think I got 29 from disc 1, though I haven't confirmed that these are all unique tracks - numerous tracks have the same duration but many seem to be subtly different versions of the same piece. I'd be happy to send you a link to the archive if you'd like to take a look.

Sure. I put mine up on MEGA, so I'll send you a link of the one I did; I got 30 from Disc 1 and 30 from Disc 2. The subtleties seem to lie across discs, based sheerly on slight filesize differences, but it wouldn't surprise me if each occurrence was slightly different (layering/mixing).

No, YouTube added 4K support in 2010 (https://techpatio.com/2010/tech-news/youtube-4k-video-support-flash). I think it's more likely that A Minute to Breathe was only produced in HD.

Hey guys, not sure what's the right thread for this, so let it be this one for now.

I've got a little request.

As you maybe know, I'm working on multicam edits of Palladium 2018 shows. Most of these shows have IEM-quality audio recording available on NIN Live Archive, and I intend to use those.
For the show #1 (Dec 7th) IEM audio has a clicktrack that was not removed. As @ninlive (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=1141) explained in the comments for the recording, it's a very tedious task which requires manual removal of thousands of clicks throughout the show, and I totally understand.

However! I've listened to this recording a couple of times recently and honestly it's not that bad. The click is not distracting for most of the songs as they are usually loud enough to bury it deep in the mix. The only songs where it's really annoying are the quiet ones at the end: Home, AATCHB and Hurt.

So my request is this: if anyone can try and clean just these three songs for me, I'd really appreciate it. It would improve the final cut tremendously.

Even with removing them you'll run in to two problems 1) it removes the most important part, the music and 2) they are so embedded in the track that it's impossible to even remove. So best is to just keep it in. Hence why I did it for night 1.

Any idea what song this corresponds to? Maybe a FYC version of a soundtrack song?

Probably from "Waves". There's an abortion clinic featured in the movie.

Can anyone hook me up with the mp3 or AAC files for the audiophile version of Hesitation Marks? I have them, but somehow they got corrupted (when a song finishes, the last 15 seconds of the song replay. It also happened to an official Pearl Jam bootleg I had, really weird). I bought the Deluxe version of HM back in the day. Mods: if this is not an OK request feel free to delete this, not trying to break any rules here.

I can't seem to find this on the NINcatalog or NINwiki site, but I'm wondering how many different Giclée prints for the Ghosts Ultra Deluxe there are. All came with the print of the front cover image, but the other one was one of a random set, maybe 5 or 6 different images. It would be cool to catalog all those somewhere.

There's another one which wasn't an image associated with any specific track, but is a version of the image that's split across the centre pages of the booklet (so, not in the pdf either). This is what that looks like:

But the giclée is in colour - those shrubs are yellow, I think.

I found a pic of the With Teeth/Year Zero era band (minus Josh Freese) with Meg White. I wonder if it was taken the same day as this pic you're looking for. It looks like they're backstage somewhere. (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/278589926927764100/)
I haven't been on here for the better part of a year. I've never seen this before! But the one I was looking for is (I'm fairly certain), Trent on the left and Jack on the right, both looking to their left. The picture showed their torsos up, I believe

Truly the most random of questions, but had these thoughts recently...

Is there a reason most, if not the vast majority of sets start with a song where Trent isn't playing guitar?

And why when Ilan joined the band did the stage set up switch from drums being on stage left (Josh/Jerome) to stage right? And stay that way?

Food for thought, how many albums start with more than 1 guitar?

For the positioning of the drums. I'll throw out there the flexible use of some of the different members. JMJ and Jeorie (I think) played double duty at times getting some time on other instruments, since that role is now Illan's moving the drums makes it easier to give him room for the 37 instruments he's able to use on any given night.

1) Definitely not the vast majority (if majority at all), at least since Fragility tour.

1st songs of the set with TR on guitar:
- Somewhat Damaged (Fragility era only),
- HLAH (Big Day Out/Fragility Euro festivals/a few occasional gigs later on like Voodoo 05 and one of final Wave Goodbye's)
- Wish (pretty often since WT era)
- Love Is not Enough (2005-2007)
- Copy of A (TR played guitar on 2013 Festivals and 2014 North American tour) - this song actually had like 6 or 7 different live configurations since its debut
- Terrible Lie (Wave Goodbye/CABAI) - but only if you don't count Now I'm Nothing as a full song (no TR guitar on that)

2) No idea really. Someone should ask him next time he's doing AMA on instagram or something. Worth mentioning that he relocated briefly to the right side again for 2014 tour, when Ally moved to front row left. Probably has to do with stage/lights/gear logistics. IIRC he plays in the middle right behind the singer with AVA

My guess would be the lower left corner is the most accurate for the smoke. They were going hard into the black & white aesthetic for performance clips, so I don't think they intended to light the smoke a specific color.

Because getting old sucks. lol I for the life of me, can't remember the nature of these interview tracks, and I've been asking around for a while for someone that can remind me where and what they came from. I believe they was a lot like the year Zero Exclusive Video Interview. That came out when you bought directly from Best buy. In This case.... There are 4 files... Labeled "Best Buy Interview 1" "Best Buy Interview 2" "Best Buy Interview 3" "Best Buy Interview 4" They aren't very long and the "The Hand that feeds" plays in the background of all four. The first one covers Trent talking about Cash's Cover of Hurt. The second, is about Trent's relationship with Bowie. The third and fourth is about his childhood and becoming famous from nowhere. Perhaps you can help me remember where these originated from... It's been driving me crazy for a while. Was there a Exclusive interview release for With Teeth through Best Buy?

This collection (https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/david-ilzhoefer?tab=artworkgalleries&artworkgalleryid=941367) of photographs is from Raleigh, NC two shows before Orlando and doesn't appear to have the "I." Looking at the snippet of footage from Arizona, it doesn't look like they had banners but the footage is tight on the stage performance.

I'm guessing this video is from the Lollapalooza documentary that was shelved. I don't know which shows were recorded for the doc, but it doesn't look like there's an "I" banner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQI4leraag4&t=38s

This may end up being an unsolved mystery since there's so little photo/video that has wider stage shots.

I think the Phoenix footage from MTV would have the definitive answer, as it was the 2nd show of the tour if this is the case. I am not to sure myself. As I was not around for these shows.

Not sure how to ask this question, but maybe you guys will figure out what I'm getting at. A post over on reddit a few weeks ago got me thinking about this...

Self Destruct tour. Yahama DX7 getting trashed during Happiness in Slavery. What was TROZ actually playing before the destruction commenced? Was it said DX7? And if so, was it a factory patch/preset? (Sorry I'm not familiar with FM synthesis so IDK if I'm using the right terminology). Or was the Yamaha being used as a midi controller for something off stage? (Once again, not sure if that's possible, I'm a Moog/Roland guy). I have listened to just about every AUD from this tour and it's different noodling every time before the beat down.

Thanks.

Do you think Trent would ever put out an official vinyl release for Record Store Day? With the 20th anniversary of Still this year, that would be where I would put money on if he would ever entertain the idea of it ... could be a RSD First kind of release—limited pressing with more available down the line.

Probably not. But it would be fun for the remix albums to be RSD related ... Further Down the Spiral, Things Falling Apart ... heck even Closer to God.

Yesterday I bought a Queen CD which has the same issue. Haven't found anything on Discogs or elsewhere. Thanks! And good to be back.

I've lost interest in RSD. If we think nin.com orders are rife with flippers, RSD line-sitters take the cake. At least fans online had about an hour to get NINxHealth 7" with a decent amount of warning for the casual fan. A 5,000 series run of anything NIN (maybe even NIN-related) is gone after the first 10 people through the door at your favorite record shop. I don't see RSD as a benefit for the fans anymore, great the indie stores get folks in the door but at this point most of those sales go to flippers.

OK, I gotta know what's going on here in between Reptile and No You Don't (at 32:08).
First there is some techno sample accidentally played that sounds like a variation of Claustrophobia Machine, or maybe just a part of No You Don't backing tape that's usually buried deep under three guitars.
Then they do some guitar feedback jam that sounds suspiciously similar to intro of 10 Miles High (LP version).

What do you all think?

Speaking of Claustrophobia Machine (Raw), has it been determined if the “(Raw)” part is part of the song title? Or is it denoting something about the version of the song that was used for Deviations? That’s always confused me.

I think you're right. It sounds like part of the No, You Don't backing track. And then the guitar/piano jam might just be vamping until they fix the problem and are ready to play the song. It does sound passingly similar to 10 Miles High, but I think that's just coincidental.

The band played all their instruments a few bars ahead of the backing track with all the synths and percussion. Supposedly due to Alex's fuckup, who did the count off too early. It starts more or less okay but gets worse with every verse. They somehow fixed it by the final chorus repeat.

I was at this show on the left side of the bowl, in seats that were far too close to the stage for what I preferred and I remember looking around the entire song trying to figure out what the fuck was going on. It was so bad live, especially because the Allstate Arena is/was a boomy, echoy mess to begin with. I was already pissed because I fucking LOVED Jerome and was so excited to see him again (saw him 5/6/05 in Chicago where there was another fuck up with Trent's mic for the openers, "The Frail" and "The Wretched" but that's another story) and then that chump came out and barely did a passable job. I was focused on how shitty his drumming was the entire show and did not have a good time.

Upon listening to the bootleg of it years later, Alex actually did a great job, "Reptile" fuck up aside. This is still my least-favorite NIN show aside from Tinley Park 2006 (Chicago again, weird...) because that "amphitheater" should've been condemned. It was/is one of the worst-sounding venues I've ever attended.

De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig (https://www.lowlove.nl/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/2013-vr.jpg). But the band before them, Biffy Clyro, mistakenly thought Trent was referring to them. They stewed and plotted their revenge, finding the perfect opportunity 9 days later at Reading Festival. With NIN going on before Biffy Clyro this time instead of after, Trent suddenly found the tables turned. As the headliner slot, Biffy Clyro convinced the festival organizers not to allow NIN to use any of their production. In a fit of rage, Trent told the BBC that they could no longer broadcast NIN's performance, and could only film close-ups for the festival monitors, but even this was thwarted when someone intercepted the satellite feed and posted it online anyway. Biffy Clyro ain't nuthing to f' wit.

Yes, Nautica Stage and Jacobs Pavilion are the same venue. I am unsure what changes have occured in 23 years (I saw Slipknot there in 1999), but it is a part of the Nautica Entertainment Complex:

What, exactly, is the instrument that Atticus plays on tour? It seems to be some sort of sequencer or sampler and not an EDM DJ set. I'm pretty sure it's some kind of synth but not quite a keyboard synth. This is one of the only closeups of it I could find.

Also, I am DESIROUS to hear "Into the Void" again; the ol' Fragility band did a bang-up job with it, not sure why it was dropped prior to Fragility 2.0 and only came back for select shows in '06–'07 and '13.

Ok, I don't know if this is the best place to ask this, so sorry if it's not; but what are the easiest NIN songs to learn on bass and guitar? I haven't played in like... fourteen years, and I'd like to learn some NIN songs. I only know Piggy so far... I used to be pretty good on bass, but not so great at guitar.

March of the Pigs, Terrible Lie and Wish are pretty simple power chord stuff, as is The Hand That Feeds and Survivalism, but can get a bit repetitive.

Just Like You Imagined is fun too when you work out all the parts

Hi all, I am not sure where on this forum to ask this: I am looking for a photograph that was posted on nin.com back in 2006 from the first With Teeth Summer Tour performance at The Gorge (May 26, 2006). The image is framed symmetrically with the audience to the left and the stage on the right. Trent is at the edge of the stage with his guitar, mid scream. Does anyone know where I can find this? I can't seem to find it on Google.

Maybe there's a photo archive of images from the NIN website I could look through?

Thank you!

I don't know how at the time (if we did at all), but by googling him you can find a picture of him sitting on a couch with TR+MQ, and also his obituary from 2010, listing quite a lot of family history up to TR's marriage.

Reading through the archives on alt.music.nin, it looks like the first set of shows was solicited on March 12 for dates through April 25 (including Chicago on April 21). Chicago at UIC Pavilion was one of the smaller venues on the tour (under 10,000), whereas most other cities' venues were in larger arenas that were 10-20,000. On March 21, they added more dates (May 2-7), but left a hole in the schedule (April 26-May 1). The Chicago show then went on sale on March 25 and sold out in minutes. It looks like they announced the 2nd Chicago show (April 26) on March 28, maybe, and it looks like it went on sale around April 1 and that one also sold out.

Orlando, FL was the last Lollapalooza stop for NIN before heading to the UK to open for G&R. Violent Femmes replaced NIN for the remainder of the festival dates.

You're not kidding. Reached the Ticketmaster counter in Bergner's at 10:03 am and ended up with lower bowl (107). Stuck around on a hunch and they were reporting "sold out" by 10:06 am.

so I have a question! I recently super got a friend into NIN and we been watching a bunch of the live shows, started with AATCHB and Beside You In Time, the this one is on us one, some pro shot festival stuff, tension on vevo, cold black and infinite stuff. I'm wondering if theres any really good quality pro audio video of any of the 2009 shows when they were a 4 piece, I've seen NIN like 13 times and that was one of my favorites just as far as how the band sounded. I've poked around but cant really find an actual soundboard audio one on youtube, but I just wondered if anybody here knew of one from that era. Maybe a festival they played during that run I hadnt thought of or something.

There's no full shows, at least in terms of video. There's some videos that Rob Sheridan shot from the stage with soundboard audio on the official YouTube and Vimeo channels, plus scattered clips from some festivals.

Does anyone remember these shirts? I remember them being for sale on a website like 20 years ago. These are the ones I could find, but I am pretty sure there were a few more. They may have been semi-official, as in not made by NIN, but they were aware and ok with it? I'm just going on memory. Anyway, was hoping someone remembered these, maybe we can find the site they were on via the Wayback Machine?

Songs debuted before being recorded: Wish, GDML, Physical (most likely)

Debuted when some studio version existed: Down in it, Sanctified, Ringfinger (Twist), The Only Time, That's What I Get, Maybe Just Once (Purest Feeling versions were already recorded), Suck (Pigface version was most likely already recorded, NIN version not yet)

Debuted before studio release (but already recorded): Burn, The Fragile (MTV performance), YKWYA?, THTF (*), Love Is Not Enough, EDIETS, TLBTB, The Collector, WT, Home, Getting Smaller, BYIT (intro version only), Non-Entity, NSPN, Survivalism, TBOTE, Copy of A (*), CBH (*), Find My Way (*), Disappointed

(*) need to check single/digital release/leak dates to make sure, but def all performed before the album dropped

More of a curiosity question, in your iTunes libraries (or whatever platforms of choice how you listen to music) do you split up And All That Could Have Been and Still with their seperate album covers or keep them together as the deluxe edition with the deluxe edition cover? Going to keep both the CD and DVD audio in my library for the time been because I'm a fussy bastard, but thanks for finally motivating me to get around to it!

Messed around with Audacity splicing in the DVD bonus tracks trying to keep it sounding as seamless as possible. Ended up using the CD version of TDTWWA because something sounds off about the DVD version. The guitar part sounds a bit crackly and just sounds like it has a different mix to the rest of the songs but overall I like what I'm hearing with the DVD master. Begone shitty artifacting!

At this point, I would just love a nice Blu-ray package. It would still be standard definition footage, but they could include the entire concert on one disc and remaster the audio for Dolby Atmos, plus include all the extras from the DVD. The 4K upscale looks nice, but personally, I don't need it to look HD. I have a 4K TV and player, and I'm pretty satisfied with how the DVD looks. That said, with DVD they were trying to cram as much as they could onto those discs, so if they did a Blu-ray release with better encoding, it could still end up looking better, even if wouldn't look HD.

"Promo Only (https://promoonly.com/)" is a DJ record pool service. It's a service that gives DJ's subscription access to promo music. This includes DJ edits, alternative remixes, extended intro versions, outro versions, bootlegs, mashups, clean and explicit versions, etc.

Here's some discussion about what Intro Edits are:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Beatmatch/comments/24jk87/what_is_an_intro_edit/
https://news.beatsource.com/2021/02/09/beatsource-launches-first-ever-licensed-dj-edits/
https://djtechtools.com/2014/06/01/making-your-first-dj-intro-edit-in-ableton-live/

I don't know enough about them to know if these are all official from the label or artist, or if some of them are done by the DJ service. I suspect the latter could be the case, especially for this "Promo Only Intro Edit".

I've been enjoying Broken a lot lately and was thinking about how it's an EP. However, when adding Physical and Suck, it is 32 minutes, and therefore considered album length. Bad Witch barely clocked in over 30 minutes, and TR made a big fuss about how it was an album and not an EP. I know originally the extra tracks were on the separate disc, but in most every case, those tracks are present in the package one way or another. Just wondering what others thoughts are on this. I'm guessing there was some reasoning behind it back in 92, and maybe it's just easier to stick with that.

BRoswell
08-28-2022, 01:25 AM
Physical and Suck were originally supposed to be a single release that came out during the first Lollapalooza tour, but TVT interfered with those plans. Trent felt like those tracks were more accessible than the rest of Broken and didn't quite fit in, which is why they are kept apart. The tracks are technically part of the album, but the album "ends" with Gave Up. Taking that into account, it makes sense why it would be considered an EP since it's just over twenty minutes long without those two tracks.

Yeah that's all there is to it, Reznor was dissatisfied that despite releasing new music, Spotify would put it in the back because it was considered an EP and not a "proper" full album. Which, I believe, made Reznor think "that's complete and utter bullshit". It completely stupid, nowadays, to just silently put an EP in the artist's catalog without putting it up front. It's new music, fans are subscribed to get the news, nobody cares if it's 10 minutes short or 3 hours long.

Especially on streaming platforms, where people notoriously come to get tracks, not albums. Prioritizing LPs makes no sense in that context.

Concerning Broken, I similarly don't care. It's a proper album, self-containing, it didn't need to linger, just a quick and intense kick in the face and done. Perfect.
