It was done for you in 2005

(admittedly, not a very good job, LOL, but it was 2005)

That's why we need an update or at least I do. Asked about the picture with TR some posts back. But nice to see the full article at least.

I've written to REVOLVER directly with little hope today. Let's see... ;)

This is where you can read the full interview transcript just FYI:

I have the magazine and can scan the page if you want the photo of TR laying out. But it will be squinched since it's across two pages. :-)

The photo credit is Karin Catt. They do have a website if you want to contact to get highest quality source: https://www.karincatt.com

Looking For Ms. GoodpipesBy Carolyn Hillard for Suite101.com on October 1, 1999Trent Reznor has put out the word that he?s looking for a female singer to work on a new project he has in mind. And Nothing Records is taking demo tapes. So if you?re that would-be rising star, you can send your tapes to P.O. Box 161095, Cleveland, Ohio, 44116, or get the info straight from the source by going to http://www.nin.com and searching the grid boxes for the details. No word on what vocal qualities the Rez is looking for. That would be too easy wouldn?t it? Aspiring chanteuses will just have to give it their best shot and hope they?ve got that indefinable quality.

Initially, there were some rumors that the female singer might be used as a backup singer during the upcoming Nine Inch Nails tour. Reznor, posting to his own message board on nin.com, clarified that that was not his intention. In La Rez?s own words: "Someone has started a rumor that the female vocalist position is for singing backups on the tour. It is not. I am starting a new project that will involve someone else singing, probably involved lyrically and most likely female. This is not in place of NIN, I just have a lot of extra material and ideas that I'm excited to try in a different situation. More later..."

I have this vague recollection of reading that Trent had asked Sade to collaborate and she declined and he had some sort of fax on the wall of her rejection. Or I dreamed it and am going mad - I’m sure I’ve searched to try and find evidence to no avail!

He'd been looking for a female vocalist for a while. When the With Teeth club tour hit in 2005, he said so many nice things about Carré Callaway that I really did think he was going to produce her album, although that never happened.

glad he at least encouraged her and brought her on tour as an opener. her last two albums have both been phenomenal. i can only imagine how great it would be to hear her and trent actually collaborate.

Not sure if this is the thread for it, but...

Should I order an XS or an S sized Tshirt? I'm 5,5 ft (167 cm), average weight. I'm not sure how big is an S (yes, I see the chart and I am too dumb to understand it).

Also, what sized PTH women's tank would you suggest for someone around 171 cm, B-cup, who would rather have it airy, more free? She's a bit above average weight.

And any significant difference between the two delivery options, if I'm just ordering these two shirts? Thanks, this would be my first nin.com order.

get yourself a small, you'll be able to put it in the dryer and still have it fit.

get her a large, same addendum.

as someone who used to wear only small t-shirts and in the last couple years has become only able to wear large & extra-large, i wish i had bought all my shirts bigger. not being able to wear them anymore sucks.

This is the thread to talk about store stuff: https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/4730-Return-of-The-NIN-Store-Livenation

All you have to do is get a tape measure that you can wrap around your chest under your arms to get an idea of the width you want for the shirt. You can also measure across the shoulders to be sure the next size up might be more comfortable. If you have boobs you'd measure the fullest part around the chest across zee boobs. You can lastly just drap the tape down from shoulder to belly button to confirm length.
But check the thread for any other info. Unfortunately the shirts in the store aren't always the same type.

I'm a big girl so I can only refer you to the larger sizing. And I'm in US so shipping is straight forward but if you read the thread, you can see people internationally see a higher price. FYI if you were looking at the shirts in the US store, you might instead check the UK store to see if shipping would be cheaper for you: https://store-uk.nin.com/

Did anyone ever make an expanded version of Broken? You know, where they mix in other songs, play with the transitions, etc. as is common for The Fragile. I was thinking that you could mix some tracks from Fixed, recoiled, the Butch Vig track, etc..

I'm an inch or a few taller than you with an average/athletic build. Get a medium. The smalls always end up feeling like a second skin in the chest and under the arms.

As for your female friend, my wife is roughly the same height, slightly slimmer, and I bought her a small back when I got her the Ghosts Birds women's tee, and it's form fitting. If she wants a bit more room I'd go no smaller than medium. I imagine the tanks aren't cut as form fitting anyway, but medium or large will probably be best depending on how much room she wants/needs.

I believe Rob said they couldn't find the original artworks when starting the PHM remaster. Guessing the other assets for DII, HLAH, & SIN have been lost (unless Gary Talpas or Designers Republic have copies).

As far as promotional images, not sure if NINcatalog has started to index that sort of thing for future reference.

For example, this distorted version of the NIN logo was used in early promotional material for the album. It's used on an album flat & some cloth stickers that may have doubled for tour passes.

I seem to recall a full page ad in SPIN but I don't think TVT's budget allowed for a big promotional push (found it)

It's an excellent source that I've used for years, but be careful with it. I got IP banned with no warning for (I assume) downloading too much art. I googled around and figured out that the guy that runs the site is seriously unhinged and bans people all the time for random reasons, sometimes things that he just makes up.

He is also so active in taking down anyone who mentions him doing this that I wouldn't be surprised if he makes an account here just to harass me for mentioning this.

Sorry it took me a minute but I checked this for you and it’s the same as the MOTP single.

What is different is the font on the cover art for this song alone. They took the v2 cover art templates and added in Reptilian but didn’t get the font or spacing right on the back of the disc and the disc art. See also how the text concerning Dead Souls on the Japanese TDS also doesn’t match (but not as badly).

Posting on this thread because I would like to be 100% certain: "Joe Bisara" from Heresy (Blind) is actually Joseph Bishara (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Bishara), right? His collaborators on the remix are Dave Ogilvie and Anthony Valcic, with whom he also remixed MM's Dope Hat (as "Dance of the Dope Hats"), this time with his surname spelled correctly. Although he's now famous for his scores and appearances in the Conjuring and Insidious film series, to me he'll always be the guy who contributed a silly techno song for the movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. I'd blast the shit out of that as a teen.

If you're talking about the ARG... no, unfortunately not.

It's one of those cases where 'you had to be there'.

There was no video game per se; it was more of a drip-feed of information in the form of lore-heavy websites. These were discovered over time by various means, such as messages hidden in spectrograms, in numbers that had to be called, in venue bathrooms, and so on. Some aspects were like a scavenger hunt that took place in the real world. The more websites that were found, the deeper the world of Year Zero became. Much of the 'gameplay' (if we can call it that) took place on discussion boards like this one. At one point, everyone on the forum was documented and given an identity number, like we were being watched.

Most, if not all of the domains expired years ago. The ARG experience lives on only in the memories of those who were there at the time.

I believe someone made a printable pdf of website screenshots.

There's also a massive amount of collated information on ninwiki.com. Just check the front page for the Year Zero ARG Overview and its subsections.

A lot of the stuff is mirrored at https://yearzero.netninja.com/, but obviously, the experience is way different. You can’t really play it without spoilers, and you probably need to mess around a bit to get everything to load properly in your browser. IIRC, lots of the sites used Flash. It was 2007, after all.

That said, some of the websites remain powerful even to this date, like that of the Solutions Backward Initiative.

If it does use Flash, anyone wanting to peruse those sites should do so before the end of this year. Flash is expiring and at least three major browsers (Chrome, IE, FF) will be blocking it.

That pdf isn't exactly the best quality, sadly. Bear in mind that some of it is transcripted. For example, 24.3.1's message played when you called a phone number. You can find more info (and audio) here: https://www.nin.wiki/12163331810#Transcription
24.9.1 is a video whose website was found in some of the distorted breakdown of The Great Destroyer. You should watch that video. 24.9.2 further explains it.

It's probably best to check each web page in 24.X.X order, look at it on the pdf and the netninja site, then check ninwiki for extra info.

I'd recommend going through The Mailstrom last. It's a bit of a slog, to be honest.

Um...it’s been a while for me. Anyone have a guess as to the meaning of those numbers, if indeed we’re talking ARG? None of those full tracks were available before the album release, right?

And that was it before release day. So what would they even be pointing to?
The ARG continued a little after the album released. Year Zero itself contained many links to websites as-yet unseen, such as the morse code in AVOTT, Red Horse Vector in The Great Destroyer, and so on. My point is that just because this wouldn't have been found before the album dropped doesn't mean it wasn't anything at all.

There may be nothing in the track bpms. Seems suspicious. It's too late now.

Back in 05 while I was discovering NIN by naively downloading every track I could find on limewire, I ended up falling for the usual suspects (Angel, Legend of Zelda etc), one of which was labelled “Nine Inch Nails - Final Destination”. It was pretty much just a version of Into the Void which had these weird, garbled, manipulated screams over it and a little section with some vocoder vocals too. I really liked it, does anybody know of this or have it? I haven’t heard it in a good ten years and can’t find anything about it online

Special performance for the Make-A-Wish Foundation that took place at a rehearsal studio in Burbank, CA.

Look at the submission notes for the concert:

My Make-A-Wish, granted when I was diagnosed with Ovarian Germ Cell Cancer at 16 in 2005. Met the whole band, talked with Trent for several hours and played a set for my family and I in an unknown Brubank, CA rehearsal studio. Lasted about 45 minutes.
Sounds plausible. They were on touring break at the time, and L.A. is where they were based. The setlist is period-appropriate. It was essentially a private performance for an audience of one (family), so I don't feel much is missing if it's not included on any gigographies. Difficult to corroborate. Maybe one of the band members of the time who is active on social media could confirm/deny (Ally, Josh)?

There's a NIN or Trent track I've heard in a DJ mix with the lyrics: "Voices etched on my memory"
Anybody know what track that is?

My apologies. I just assumed you were a troll because a) it was your first post and b) a cursory google search reveals it's a line from 'My Own Worst Enemy' by Lit.

Yeah it's not that song, nor is it a cover of that song. Sorry I can't remember more of the lyrics but it's 100% Trent's vocals.

New to this exchange but, unless I’m missing attribution somewhere online, that’s not Trent? Everything I can find says the vocalist is Calyx, a.k.a. Larry Cons. I feel like it would be weird that there’s a guest vocal from Trent about which we were largely unaware?

It's not him. GodShapedHole thought it was and asked what song had these words, and if you google the words there are literally only five results, and they're all about this song. I was just providing a link to the song he was looking for. Not NIN related at all.

That's a cool idea, re-releasing reprints of old tshirts as part of an anniversary nod.

I have a couple of very old NIN shirts (the oldest being the Now I'm Nothing shirt) and while I love the designs, t-shirts from the early 90's have a weird fit to them that I can't stand. I'd rather have the old designs on a newer t-shirt.

I used to have a Now I'm Nothing shirt that felt weird and was ill fitting. It was too big and felt like super thick cotton, so I sold it. Now my oldest NIN shirts are a Downward Spiral shirt (that's also too big) and a long sleeved Self-Destruct shirt, which is among my favorites.

Did yours have the design sort of printed with a more textured paint? If so, I think we have/had the same batch of that shirt design. It also has a weirdly high neckline for a t-shirt.

I also have basically no merch from the YZ era, and really wish I did. I also wish I had HTDA shirts, but that's a lamentation for the HTDA thread.

I think it did. It did have a high neckline so it's probably the same shirt. Very similar to the one Trent used to wear in the early 90s. I wanted to like that shirt so bad, but it just didn't work for me.

Digging the retro shirts. Keep meaning to buy the FDTS shirt to replace my original from back in the day. Remember seeing a Now I'm Nothing shirt in a store (Camden probably?) that I always wish I'd picked up, but then I would have just lost that too.

So my random question is... to what is Trent referring to when he asks for a copy of the NME at the 26 May Astoria recording? I'm sure I remember this being discussed before, but I don't remember the answer. A Google search brings up mention of a bad review of TDS so I guess that's it -if so, might this be archived somewhere?

Here's Trent's exact quote after Get Down Make Love: "Does anybody out there got an NME on them? Anybody have an NME they can pass up to the front? You know. You guys understand English? I just took a shit and I need something to wipe my ass with. Anybody have an NME they can pass up to the fucking front?"

You can hear a recording of it on ninlive.com. https://ninlive.com/shows/1994/19940526.html
And yes, it's because he was upset about the bad review for TDS that came out in NME.

Trent thought With Teeth was a good follow up in Halo 22.

Otherwise, I can get onboard with Gave Up. The end of BYIT and start of Gave up have similar enough tempo, if TR and co felt so inclined I bet they could give Atticus a solo to seamless transition between the two. I was hoping that sort of thing is what Atticus would be doing when he became part of the live performance.

I have never ordered from this part. account/person, but I did order a very high quality bootleg shirt from what I assume is another person/group in Thailand off Ebay about a year or two ago. It was from an account "agunpratam-0 (https://www.ebay.com/usr/agunpratam-0) " that appears to now be inactive on EBay. There is a newer account that is selling the same shirt now:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-80s-EXODUS-Shirt-Tour-Concert-1989-Headbangers-Ball-THRASH-METAL-REPRINT/353011845972?hash=item5231254b54:g:Mz0AAOSwqUtecuM q

And this is the shirt:

The shirt has survived a good amount of washes now, hasn't shrunk, image is still crisp, etc. So you def. CAN get good quality shirts from this method, but I can't speak on this part. IG account. One would think that if they put this much effort into showing off what they are doing, that in theory they would be making decent stuff.

Currently, the best I've come up with is low quality stills from the video and a couple of images posted by the director Jon Reiss. Thanks. I think the quality is about as good as the Vimeo upload on that one, which isn't bad, but not brilliant when trying to pull detail. The search continues.
For what it's worth there are a couple of Jon Reiss colour stills from this video on his Facebook page. Nothing too insightful but enough to indicate what this video would have looked like in colour.

I considered it, but I don't think so. Even the earliest HLAH mix (LeBlanc's Slate) is from July 1989, too early to make this sampler. And all the Flood mixes (of which You Know Who You Are is one) that we know the dates on are from 1990. Also, including a dub mix on a showcase sampler? That would have been too weird.

Also, I just noticed this, but John Fryer is credited on the mix for HLAH on this sampler. As far as I'm aware, no version of HLAH from John Fryer has ever surfaced. There was only LeBlanc on the album version and Slate version, and Flood on all the other versions.

Not very, tbh. Most of the book narrative is sourced from magazine articles and interviews. I don't think there's any real original research in here. There also does seem to be a bit of creative "hole-filling" and interpolation by the writer sometimes, so I take what I read in there with a grain of salt.

But it can be handy to have around sometimes. I've picked it up for reference maybe once or twice per year since getting it a few years ago. I paid $8 shipped for mine on eBay.

I'm sure we've been over this before, but I caught a bunch of Ghosts songs on a long YouTube video, and so, I wondered again:

What exactly does the Creative Commons thing, or whatever it's called exactly, mean?

The specific license on Ghosts I-IV (and The Slip), Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial Share Alike/CC BY-NC-SA, roughly means:
1. Creative Commons: the name of group that defines these licenses. (Not all CC licenses are the same, thus the unwieldy long name on this one.)
2. Attribution: When sharing, you have to credit the original creator. You also have to specify if this is 100% their work, or if you've made changes.
3. Noncommercial: You (the audience) can't sell it, or generally use it to sell something/earn money/etc. Don't just slap it in a car commercial or whatever.
4. Share-alike: You can spin off of this work in any way you choose, but when sharing that, you need to communicate that whatever you make - remixes, scoring videos, whatever - is licensed under all these exact same conditions.

A CC license isn't something you buy - it just exists the moment you attribute something like "released under CC BY-NC-SA" to your own work. Really what it does it promises that the creator won't restrict you from doing anything under these terms, although they retain the freedom to negotiate use outside of those conditions. This is why, say, Lil Nas X's management had to negotiate with TR's regarding Old Town Road: under this license, he's not automatically permitted to sample Ghosts in a song he's selling and/or distributing under a different license.

What's the 'shitty industrial band' that Danny Lohner is talking about at the end of the RRHOF group chat? He mentions Houston, Texas and NIN soundchecking with Wish before it was released. Looks like NIN played Houston twice in 1991, in January with Die Warzau supporting and in July with Body Count and the Butthole Surfers?!?!?! Process of elimination would leave Die Warzau. Bit harsh calling them shitty.

It's definitely July 13 date (one of three warm up gigs before Lollapalloza). We don't know for sure who was the opener (if there was one), and it wasn't Butthole Surfers for sure because they played on the next day.

https://happinessinheresy.com/nine-inch-nails-concert/houston-july-13-1991/ <- some newspaper ads about the upcoming gig here, but no reviews, sadly

Did ya all know APC existed way back in 1991? LOL

I'm a-thinkin' that the person posting didn't quite catch that Danny said it was a shitty industrial band he was playing in... and since we know who that was, well, seems to be the answer. No need to really dig much deeper than that.

Pretty sure that's Brian Viglione on the couch behind the laptop, the other guy sitting with him is (I believe) Brett Bachemin, and the dude writing on the notepad is Dustin Mosley.

Anyone know what the sample at 0:35 of Head Like A Hole (Opal) is from?

I ask this because I heard it in an early Mark Stewart song once (1:11)

First thought was Adrian Sherwood repeating himself again, but he didn't seem to be involved in that Stewart track or the Opal mix of HLaH

First thought was Adrian Sherwood repeating himself again, but he didn't seem to be involved in that Stewart track or the Opal mix of HLaH

Well.... there's this:

"Originally released as part of the MYTHS: INSTRUCTIONS 1 compilation on Sub Rosa 1984

An outtake from the disparate sessions that produced the debut solo album by former Pop Group frontman Mark
Stewart, Learning To Cope With Cowardice, this track has appeared in various different forms and lengths over
the years. The version presented here is a nine minute epic (an even longer twelve minute version also exists,
but sadly in somewhat reduced fidelity) that first appeared on a 1984 compilation album that instigated the
long running Belgian avant-garde label Sub Rosa, alongside the distinguished company of William S. Burroughs,
Camberwell Now (ex-This Heat) and members of Eyeless In Gaza. A dizzying amalgamation of cut-up record
fragments, turntablism, newsreel excerpts, industrial noise, Stewart's highly distinctive vocals, and a
distorted proto-electro beat; the overall effect sounds something like the Wild Style soundtrack had the
action been transported from downtown Bronx to Throbbing Gristle's Death Factory studio. On the sleeve of the
original compilation it appeared on, the track was described as being about "the occult technology of power".

Stewart continues to innovate, intimidate and inspire; and in 2015 The Pop Group, reformed and re-energized,
have issued the acclaimed Citizen Zombie album."

A blerb from Trevor Jackson Presents: Science Fiction Dancehall Classics (https://bleep.com/release/62165-various-artists-trevor-jackson-presents-science-fiction-dancehall-classics) (Bleep link; this is the compilation that sent me a years long journey through On-U Sound history...) which is an On-U Sound compilation... and On-U Sound is Adrian Sherwood's label.......

So a few posts this week about Tapeworm/Saul Williams stuff in the Controversial Opinions thread led me to something that I'm confused about. TR once said that the drums from "Convict Colony" are from a Tapeworm track, but we later learned that they were performed by Dave Grohl. I see no mention of Dave Grohl having been a part of the whole Tapeworm stuff, and I know TR didn't even contact Dave at all until the With Teeth sessions. So from this, should we conclude that those drums are from a WT outtake and that TR was probably mixed up when he said it was from a Tapeworm track?

That's possible. He mentions in his quote that he thinks it was a Tapeworm track, but he doesn't definitively say that it was. Considering that the instrumental for "Skin Of A Drum" was formed out of a Fragile outtake, it's possible that Trent gave Saul a mix of tracks from different projects.

Also, it should be noted that not every track on NiggyTardust was formed out of Trent outtakes. Some of the tracks were ones that Saul already had and that were later tweaked by Trent & Atticus, and some were Frankenstein creations made out of different pieces from different people.

Queen Kwong didn't exist back then (I assume you know this), literally no one knew who the hell is that playing before NIN. Carre was billed under her own name Carré Callaway and played solo, without a band. Bold move by TR.
I very much doubt any footage exists, considering the state of cell phones in 2005.

Hello everyone!!

So, there was a 'remix' album on youtube a while ago - the cover was of a year zero yellowey smokey city, and it was a 2hour megamix of NIN remixes, including the great destroyer remix by modwheelmood, the saul williams gunshots by computer (i think), and loads of others. Infact, it was almost a Trance/Dance remix album of NIN.

It seems to have disappeared through. Does anybody know what i'm talking about, and have a link to it - because it was brilliant. I'm fairly sure it was called 'After All is Said and Done' but i can't be 100% on that

Yeah, I've heard the same. And a lot of people criticized the fact it was still brickwalled to fuck despite being the "audiophile" version but I've got an incredible setup and would love to hear it, even if it's only a small improvement.

And that, in a nutshell, is the curse of being an audiophile: spending thousands of dollars to get a 2-5% increase in performance. Sigh.

Hello, it's a pleasure to meet everyone here. I fairly new here and recently stumbled upon this site through NIN wiki. I'm a long time collector and fan of Trent Reznor and I've been working on a list of material. My question is, is there anything I'm missing from my list? ^_^ Thank you.

Demo, Rumored, Lost and Unreleased Tracks

"The Beauty Of The Drug" (Unreleased/Demo 'The Downward Spiral' Track. Possibly became 'The Perfect Drug'.)
"Just Do It" (Unreleased/Demo axed Track. Possibly become 'The Downward Spiral'. Was a track prompting the album's protagonist to kill himself. The latter was axed at the request of Flood, who refused to have anything to do with it.)

"Be Kind To Them" (Tapeworm Project)
"Ignorant" (Tapeworm Project)
"Potions" (Tapeworm Project)(later "covered" and renamed "Potions (Deliverance Mix)" by Puscifer)

Keith had made sample CD's in the 90s which put him on Trent's radar.

Even if it turns out it's a bootleg. There's no Discogs listing for it, but that doesn't mean it's not real; I've bought plenty of TPs/formats off that site that didn't have a listing. I'll have to give an assessment of it once it arrives and I've had time to sit with it..

What is Trent Reznor working on now? I usually watch and read all the interviews and now that Mank and Soul are done, I’m not aware of anything else in the pipeline that is public knowledge. Did I miss anything? Of course one would hope their attention would turn to new NIN, but I also know in an interview a couple months ago he said he had been lacking creative inspiration due to the pandemic.

Im sure somewhere near the end of this interview they’re asked do they want to start writing for themselves again (which would mean NIN I imagine) and they are (this is at 51.30)

Specifically, the enormous one with lyrics that you could get through the Spiral fan club. I have one and want to get it framed but it's all packed away right now. Rather than dig it out right now, I figured I'd ask if anyone knew offhand what the dimensions of the thing were?

The large pdf of the poster says 36 inches by 48 inches, fwiw...

Thanks :)

Is there more information on the whole Elephant Man thing on here? I can find mentions here and there.

Mark Nicholas Onofrio, from Houston, Texas, filed a complaint in Los Angeles federal court claiming that Reznor used five of his songs on The Downward Spiral, and also declared that the song Burn on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack is incredibly similar to another track he had sent to Reznor.

Onofrio claims that he met Reznor in a chat room in the summer of 1993. (Haven't all chat frequenters met Golda Meir, Weiland or Reznor in some remote part of the Web at three in the morning?) Onofrio claims he asked Reznor if he would listen to some of his work. Reznor gave a positive reply via e-mail and supplied his address. Onofrio claims he then Fed Ex'd a demo to Reznor's house.

When The Downward Spiral was released back in '94, Onofrio noticed that five tracks on the album were based on four songs from his self-produced Elephant Man collection that he allegedly sent to Reznor. The lawsuit claims that the NIN songs "Closer" and "Mr. Self Destruct" are strikingly similar to the Onofrio-penned "Voice," "March of the Pigs" is allegedly ripped off from Onofrio's "Nothing." "Hurt" is supposed to be derived from Onofrio's "Real", "The Downward Spiral" is hypothetically taken from the tune "Dinner With Jeff." Onofrio also claims that one of Reznor's contributions to the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, "Burn" is strikingly similar to his tune titled "This Hell."

Onofrio's lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for copyright infringement, and seeks injunctions against the further distribution of The Downward Spiral and Natural Born Killers- both the movie and the soundtrack. The complaint names Reznor, NIN, Interscope Records (Reznor's record label), Warner Bros. (the movie studio behind Natural Born Killers) and others. Onofrio is indeed taking on the system. But the system has yet to react. As of the press time, no hearings have been scheduled.

You can download the tracks here:

I have to laugh at this in the MTV artlce: "With this legal hurdle out of the way, it appears that Reznor can now concentrate on his highly-anticipated new double-album, which sources indicate should (finally) arrive sometime next year". December 2, 1998 article.

It's so fun being able to find little things like this!

To make you buy two copies, of course. Personally, I actually prefer the US tracklist. Which is not what came out here, so I had to get an import which was a hassle back in the day. Which version came out in your territory? On Spotify I get the V2 version, although Hurt (Live) is titled (Quiet) for some reason.

Does anybody know how TR got the piano sound on La Mer and Adrift And At Peace? Slightly out of tune but it's more so the really muted tone like the piano is broken that I'm most interested in learning more about. It's the perfect sound to fit the ocean vibe these songs have. Always been curious but have never figured it out.

Max
03-19-2021, 01:27 PM
I'm interested too. I am assuming you are talking not about the first piano that softly begins the song, but the second one that is a little more odd in its sound and tuning and timing?

It sounds very percussive and resonant, and kind of plucky. I feel like I can really hear the strings of the piano in it. I'm still learning about music but I wonder if maybe they put a mic on the strings as well? It's such a unique sound. And the reverb on it... both piano sounds really create such a sense of space. They put you in a particular place and give you a certain feeling.

We should all be having more discussions like this! There is so much to chew on in his material.

It was Die toten Hosen. To quote Meathead:
"And the award for Most Pathetic and One-Sided Artistic Feud Ever goes to: Nine Inch Nails and Die Toten Hosen (The Dead Pants). NIN says Die Toten Hosen's crew broke their guitars with their Stonehenge backdrop (insert painfully obvious Spinal Tap reference here). Die Toten Hosen fired back by calling Trent and Co. "American-style pussies" and a few other things that basically translate to "thanks for mentioning us and boosting our record sales this week to 10". But what actually happened is, nobody gives a shit. Fortunately, everything else about NIN's visit to Germany went very smoothly and didn't suck balls at all, and they eagerly anticipate returning to play some more shows in front of a bunch of pissed off Rammstein fans. Whoops, sorry, I mean Ramms+ein. THIS IS THE PART OF THE SHOW WHERE WE DANCE."

That was Die Toten Hosen (rechristened “Washed-up Shitty Band” by Trent) in 2006. They lowered some of their stage rigs on a bunch of NIN’s guitars/ But he’s been pissed off at other bands at European festivals since.

Specifically, I seem to remember that Fall Out Boy (I think) did a lot of “we love rock’n’roll” type stage banter at Reading 2013. They played right before NIN.

During the intro of one of the NIN songs, Trent nonchalantly said “Fuck rock’n’roll by the way”. It might have been The Warning, during which he also went nuts when improvising the “your time is ticking away” part.

It all started with this. https://ninlive.com/shows/1991/19910824.html They opened for GNR and had hot dogs thrown on stage. Being your first show in Europe I think this would definitely stick with you. I assume the first few shows for them opening were not great with the GNR crowd.

Then most of the stuff that has already been brought up during European festivals... Gear falling on guitars, storms cancelling shows, promoters not bringing enough power for the ability for NIN to run their full lighting rig etc. etc.

They seemed to go down really well at all the European festivals in 2018 - although they did moan about a festival in Switzerland I think at that Record shop interview!

They complained about their 2018 show at the St. Gallen Open Air during an interview with Mexican media called Sopitas. I watched the interview again just the other day. I saw NIN play the same festival in 2009 and it wasn't so bad. But I gotta say, that festival has a certain type of cowd, which won't be all that enthusiastic about a band like NIN. A friend of mine saw that 2018 show and confirmed to me that the vibe really wasn't there.

On the other hand, I saw NIN maybe just weeks later in Montreux, Switzerland, and it was an amazing show. Maybe the most fun I ever had at a NIN show. The crowd was totally into it and the band was feeding off from it. We also got Gary Numan joining them for Metal, that evening. Montreux is a very famous festial, where the music and the artists really are the focus of the whole thing. Plus, the people in the French-speaking part of Switzerland are a little more loose in general. In St. Gallen, people go there every year, just for the event and the camping culture. What bands are playing is secondary.

Thinking about it, I've actually been at all these shows where these events mentioned events happened.

2005 Interlaken, Greenfield Festival: Would have been my first NIN show, but a rain/hale storm came and ruined the main stage. NIN couldn't play. Whatever both bands are claiming happened, was a result of that storm. (Was there a video posted of the storm coming down on the festival on nin.com? I remember something, but I might be wrong.)

2007 Konstanz, Rock am See (Germany): "The fucking promoter lied to us and didn't bring enough power." NIN has to play without their light show, Trent is super pissed, but plays an amazing show. Even leans into the crowd during Piggy (I touched his hand, fanboy moment). Gets pissed off even more when some dude shouts HLAH during Hurt and tosses the keyboard from the stage. You've probably seen the videos.

Despite all of this, I'd say NIN played some great festival shows here in Switzerland. Apart from Montreux, the 2007 show at the Rock Oz Arenes in an old Roman amphitheatre was also great and the band seemed to be in a great mood.

Ok, enough story telling for now. Hope we'll have more stories to tell, once touring is possible again.

So I was listening to Age of Reason by Lead Into Gold (a project from Paul Barker of Ministry) last night for probably the second time. I noticed that the drum sounds on the song "Fell From Heaven" are the same drum sounds used on "Reptile". I'm not knowledgeable enough about drum machines and synths, so my question is did both songs just end up using the same piece of gear, or did TR actually sample the LIG song?

I discovered something similar recently, upon listening to Australian electro-industrial band Snog’s first album, Lies, Inc. (released initially in 1992, but re-released in an expanded edition in 1993).

You’ll hear similar textures to what was used in the Broken/Fixed era on the track “Manufacturing Consent” -

https://youtu.be/HB_99OKLVQE

And even a familiar sample on the band’s debut single, “Corporate Slave” -

https://youtu.be/BXXzaaL8Khw

I kinda feel like they were just popular synth sounds/aesthetics, specific to the “scene” back at that time?

Wasn’t there a story that each copy had a different segment left out, so if somebody leaked it he knew who it was? I guess I just always assumed this was the explanation.

But then Trent and Rob posted a DVD remaster of it on The Pirate Bay and it was the same as early bootleg version

Not exactly. The bootleg only had audio during Hell Me I Am In Hell whereas the remaster had both audio and video. I’m assuming the blackouts were the video of the individual songs. Not just random small blackouts strewn throughout.

But as for Last, it has never had a video or been part of the movie, no.

That was more of a Neil Young announcement than a NIN announcement so it's up to his team. And if you thought Trent's "Soon" timeline was slow, you haven't seen Neil's "Archives Vol. II is coming soon" after Volume 1 was released in 2009: volume II was released last year.

And yes, it's 1 and II.

I keep waiting for a punch in the gut, something along the lines of 'we are releasing everything we have, but we didn't say that we have every performance recorded'

we can only speculate but what do you think how much did the sample clearance for "34 Ghosts IV" cost Lil Nas X?

just did some research and found this:

The song, "34 Ghosts IV," was actually included in a beat made by Dutch producer YoungKio, which Lil Nas X subsequently bought online for $30. YoungKio says that before he made the beat interpolating the NIN song, he'd found it on YouTube. Prior to that, he'd never heard of Nine Inch Nails or the group's longtime leader, Trent Reznor.

According to Business Insider, while "Ghosts" was released under a Creative Commons License, which gives "fans the ability to remix and redistribute the work from a multitude of different formats," the sample itself was never cleared to appear on the beat that YoungKio put up for sale, or on Lil Nas X's original song. Once the track started gaining steam, Reznor was contacted regarding the sample, and he approved it; he's now listed as a producer and songwriter of "Old Town Road."

I guess it depends on what you mean by "cost". We've not been privy to the details about their agreement, so it's hard to say what the price was to clear the sample. You can be sure that Trent & Atticus are definitely getting a cut of the profits whenever it's played though.

Some artists - if they have full control over their music as is the case with Ghosts - can simply approve music or sample use without asking for money

Pretty sure the rights were asked for after it got popular and NIN waived any costs

Edit: okay not waived costs but it wasn’t blocked in any way https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/trent-reznor-old-town-road-903889/
