Since there's no thread I could find, figured I'd start up the new ETS version with some insane, if not completely new to everyone, news:

Chi has begun to emerge from his coma; can lift his legs on command and is making sounds. (http://www.stereoboard.com/content/view/170472/9)

Don't you give up, man.

I used to love these guys in middle school, especially those first three albums, but haven't checked back in that much. I listened to Saturday Night Wrist once and thought it was good, but kind of forgot about them. How have the albums been since White Pony in your guys' opinion?

Speaking of White Pony, part of the reason I want to get back in to them was because I listened to it maybe about a month ago and forgot how much I loved it and I thought it holds up extremely well. I honestly think that it's one of the most underrated and misunderstood albums in some time. Loved "Knife Prty", "Digital Bath", "Street Carp" and "Elite" and think the rest of the album is very good. Some of my appreciation for them stems from the Metal Evolution episode on nu-metal. I was glad to see Chino looking slim again.

My fav Deftones album is Around the Fur. I think WP has some fantastic moments and some of the band's best songs, but as a whole I find its flow disrupted. The self-titled was, and remains, a crushing disappointment, though it has some incredible sounds on it. Saturday Night Wrist I listened to non-stop for a few days, then turned from it and have not been back. The new one has some bite to it, but I can't really love this band much anymore. Planning on revisiting Adrenaline soon: I loved that album to death back in 95.

Holy shit. That's really fucking awesome about Chi! That makes me so happy.

Deftones are one of my favorite bands. I love them. White Pony is my favorite album of theirs. I also don't understand why everyone hates Self Titled so much. I think that album is massively overlooked. Some of the darkest, heaviest stuff they've ever done lies on that album. In fact, I think that Battle-Axe is one of their best songs.

But Kid, if you're getting back into Deftones, be sure to check out Diamond Eyes. It's incredible. Super fun album. They took the Chi shit and made probably the most cohesive album since White Pony, and probably the most positive sounding album yet.

I think they get better with every album... although I think White Pony and Adrenaline are lacking compared to Their Predecessors. Their writing and musicianship has matured a lot over the years, and I even really like their often betrothed self titled. I think its a highlight....
Always wished Eros would see the light of day. that one song, Melanie, they used to play from it kicked ass all over the place. Glad chi's getting back up

Only album I can't really get behind is Adrenaline. I started with Around the Fur, then White Pony. Adrenaline was just too different I guess. White pony remains my favorite though. A nice mix of around the fur and the things to come in the future albums. Diamond Eyes is a very solid album. The chi stuff definitely brought that out.

They should (should've) released Eros and gave all of the money towards Chi's recovery.

They should, yes, but I understand why they haven't released it. I remember interviews saying that it was a really dark album, so I could see them not wanting to release a dark angry album in favor of a more positive sounding one, to help them cope with Chi.

I got into Deftones about the time Around the Fur came out. Everyone drooled over that album, but it is one album I don't really listen to all that much anymore. I have been going back to Saturday Night Wrist to be honest and man, I forgot how many good songs came off of that album. Self-Titled will always be my favorite.

I don't know, it's not very overwhelming for me. Deftones are in my top 5 favorite bands, and I couldn't be more excited at all of these. If they all sounded the same I could see it getting overwhelming but all of his projects have a different vibe. No different than all of Jack White's projects!

August 30, 2012 – Grammy-winning alternative rock band Deftones have announced the November 13th release of their seventh studio album, entitled KOI NO YOKAN. To support the release they will hit the road on a nationwide headlining tour, with special guest Scars On Broadway, which kicks off October 9th in Ventura, CA and will conclude on the West Coast mid November. Tickets on sale next Friday, September 7 via Ticketmaster.com.

KOI NO YOKAN was recorded in Los Angeles, CA with Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Rush) who also produced Diamond Eyes. Front man Chino Moreno summed up Deftones‘ sound in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying “Obviously we’re an aggressive band – not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack. He continues, “But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.”

From their 1994 debut Adrenaline to their platinum-certified, Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-winning breakthrough album White Pony, Deftones have continually crossed-over genres, defied categorization and delivered compelling live performances around the world. The Sacramento band’s 2010 release Diamond Eyes was named iTunes’ “Rock Album of the Year,” as well as KERRANG!’s 2010 Album of the Year. Diamond Eyes also graced many other critics and readers “Best Of” lists, including MySpace, AOL Noisecreep, Alternative Press, MOG, and Drowned In Sound.

Koi No Yokan (Japanese): The sense upon first meeting a person that the two of you are going to fall into love. This is different than “love at first sight,” since it implies that you might have a sense of imminent love, somewhere down the road, without yet feeling it. The term captures the intimation of inevitable love in the future, rather than the instant attraction implied by love at first sight.

Im a very long time fan and i feel like self titled and onward is lime an entirely new era creatively for them. It seems more forward moving and is more technical and complex. So even though i grew upbon atf and white pony, i dont think theyre nearly as good as the last 3 albums. Or Like Linus. I love Like Linus.

My ranking:

1. Saturday Night Wrist
2. Around the fur
3. Diamond Eyes
4. Deftones
5. White Pony
6. Adrenaline

I think SNW, it's the best because it resumes all Deftones musical styles, plus the production is awesome!

I love all the albums really. Its kind of a tough call. But any good deftones ranking should include Like Linus cause it IS the nuts. The real first deftones album.

Ill gove it a shot though.
1. SNW
2. Linus
3. S/t

5. Diamond Eyes
6. Adrenaline
7. Pony

Thats right! I dont like WP that much.

Chino's voice hasn't sounded this good since White Pony, yes?

To me, Chino has one of the most consistently great voices out there, so I'm not noticing a particular a jump in his ability. Same awesome voice as always. :)

Anyone else turn up their speakers for the beginning of "Leathers"? I was lulled into a false state of peace and promptly had the shit scared out of me. Should've known better. I'm also surprised to see some serious love for Saturday Night Wrist. That's been my favorite Deftones album since its release. Self-titled was my favorite before that, and at this point, it probably just edges out Diamond Eyes which you could argue is better - I just had a more personal experience with self-titled since that was the album that solidified my fandom.

^^^ Haha, yea I wasn't expecting that explosion of sound either. Very erie beginning to the song. I love how in the chorus, Chino's voice just soarsssss. Been listening to this all day.

I'd go with this for me:

1. Deftones
2. Saturday Night Wrist
3. Around The Fur
4. White Pony
5. Diamond Eyes
6. Adrenaline
7. Linus

The self titled has always stuck with me the most because to me that is when they started going into the more experimental phase like what was mentioned above. There is no other album like it from the band, and it stemmed "Lucky You" which is one of my all time favorite Deftones song. The album is just so well balanced.

Leathers is fucking Deftones gold. This album is going to blow minds.

Wonder if it will have leaked prior to their show on the 24th in MI? That's about two weeks give or take. Would be cool to listen to it on the drive down to that show. I'm pretty sure they will be working out the kinks on a ton of their new stuff on this tour, which is always fun to see, especially if you are hearing it just when the album is fresh on your ears.

This is classic heavy, melodic Deftones to me. There is nothing over the top, nothing underwhelming, it's just them rocking the fuck out doing what they do best. They sound very very tight this time around though. This album is going to own.

I fail to see how using gas to go out to a store to buy a piece of plastic is superior to staying at home, downloading a version of the album equal to the quality on that piece of plastic, and instantly listening to it, being able to go take a walk, or ride the subway, or plug it into an auxiliary port and bump the volume while cleaning the house, basically anything you want to do while listening to it. Of course you wouldn't understand, you're 15 and have no soul! I would have thought a youngin' like you would realise that by buying in CD format you can have it in digital format too, as much as I do love my Sony Walkman with 15 second anti-shock.

You're an idiot.

Break it up on the name calling, guys. Preferred formats of listening to music vary across the board and each person is different. Name calling derails the thread and is disruptive. Knock it off.

Now that's just a whole lot of wank.

Is it? When you put your CD into the CD player, it's just playing the data off the CD. Digital formats are the same thing minus the big round disc, which you have to admit is inconvenient to listen to on the go compared to mp3s. I'm not trying to convince you to stop buying CDs but you should at least be informed instead of just assuming it's "kids these days" listening to mp3s.

To get back onto topic - I'm holding out for the vinyl on this one.

As opposed to... riding in your car or playing that piece of plastic in a cd player, or if your'e still stuck in the 90s, walking around with a Sony Walkman.

If your argument is in favor of a lossless audio source like FLAC or Apple Lossless, I will accept your argument. However, if you believe that a lossy audio source (such as an MP3, WMA, etc.) is the same as listening on a CD, you are FAR from correct. I still buy CDs because I enjoy having a physical copy that I can then rip to my computer in said lossless formats, throw it on an external hard drive for collection purposes, and then make a secondary transfer to an iPod (in Apple Lossless).

Also back to topic - YES to vinyl. I have Diamond Eyes on vinyl and would love to own this one on the same format.

The 'whole lot of wank' comment was referring to you saying there is no ritual to playing a cd but there is to vinyl. They're both physical forms so everything else is just in the head. I'm not against vinyl and they are more... 'romantic' than CDs, but the way you said it screamed WANKKKKKKK!

Start from the beginning and go forward, that way you can hear the progression of their sound.

To be honest, almost all of their albums is a good place to start with the exception of "Adrenaline" since it is a different sound after that album and now. All of their albums are pretty accessible as far as sound goes. "Around The Fur" I would start with first, but if I were to dive right in randomly.. I would stay away from "Adrenaline" and "Deftones" (Self-Titled).

Edit: Blackhole makes a good point :p

The self-Titled is good. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I'd say start with either Around The Fur or White Pony and move forward.

I mainly started with Saturday Night Wrist, Diamond Eyes, then worked my way back. Not how I intended to listen to them, but I'm pretty pleased with how it worked. The newer stuff kinda helped prime me and warm me up to their older material.

God. "Tempest" is SO fucking good. It's RIDICULOUS how many plays it's had on my iPod in the last week.

Oddly their "B-Sides & Rarities" album is a good place to start; it has all "kinds" of Deftones: "nu-metalish", "screamish", "quietish" plus 3 acoustic versions of their most well known songs and 8 cover songs that show how they appropriate contemporary songs to their style plus there's a DVD with all of their videos at the time!

I already said this is one of my favorite releases...

I absolutely love the Be Quiet and Drive acoustic version. Finally just ordered B-Sides from amazon cause all I ever had were downloads of some of the songs, also realized that I never actually bought Saturday Night Wrist so I ordered that as well along with pre-ordering the new one.

This album sounds so dark from these three songs. This is great.

Yep, that sounded terrible. But hot damn is this another awesome song!! I'm calling Koi No Yokan my album of the year. It better live up to my ultimate expectation! ;)

Deftones always manage to amaze me. I usually never have high hopes, but each time they release a new single before a new album, it's way beyond anything I could have imagine. That's just great! That's what I wish all the bands I listen to would do. Deftones just never seem to be able to deceive me. Even if I didn't like Saturday Night Wrist as much as their other albums, there are still a couple of impressive songs (Hole in the Earth, The Earth, Combat, etc...)

Hot damn!

4-6 weeks to deliver Koi No Yokan LE to Australia AND $16.50 for shipping. Not to mention they try to fob us off to the European store to begin with. Considering it will be for sale in Australian stores for $19.99, fuck that.

Just in case you haven't already done this. White Pony was mentioned a couple times in with a few others, but it really is their best album according to most of their fanbase along with being the work that every other piece of music they ever release will be compared with in terms of quality.

And no I'm not asking for a debate on if it's their best, it's just widely considered their best.

Agreed with everyone. Those 30 second samples sound fantastic. Talk about a band that has never faltered in releasing a solid album. Even if you're like 'meh, not as amazing as the last one', there's no way that they've ever released something that still wasn't well worth the wait.

One of the best thing about Deftones is not just that they consistently pump out solid albums, or that they never make the same album twice, but that they're INTELLIGENT. You'll never feel ashamed for telling your hipster friends that you love Deftones because there's just no argument. Chino doesn't sound like a butt rock asshole, and they make smart, genuinely good alternative metal. And just for that, they ARE the best hard hard rock band out there.

If I recall correctly, the trolliest this place ever got was actually right before 10,000 Days got released. It was pretty bad. Not nearly as bad as Sharing Lungs right now, though. We're lucky to have excellent moderation, and those giant signatures they get away with over there make things even worse.
