Just started my biking season with a 30km run.
Feels so fucking good, despite obligatory spring butt hurt from the hard seat.

I did that two weeks ago and even started riding to work again and got bronchitis after two rides. UGH. I'm supposed to be ramping up for a tour late spring, I can't do that if I can't breathe!

Had a great weekend visit from my sister I haven't seen in ten years. (literally to the day as both were for birthdays) My mom didn't come so no one got in a fight and no one left feeling depressed. It was great.

So like 17 years ago or so i got some smashing pumpkins cd's from my buddy, random singles and such. Anyhow, i was looking in one of the few boxes of stuff i have left and found an old sleeve of 8 of them today. He was fairly surprised to see them to say the least.

I gave up drinking completely and have also changed my diet drastically after I recently had a blood test done. Everything was essentially perfect apart from the blood sugar being a bit high again, so I've cut all crap from my diet, replacing it with fruit (vegetables were never a problem for me but I always tended to neglect fruit), and drinking only water and tea/coffee without sugar. My mind, body and personal life are all bettering from the changes and I feel great in myself now, too. I feel guilty eating a single M&M even!

Anyone else get this email from Plex today?
Hi allegate, you’ve done an great job getting your Plex Media Server up and running and adding your media. Nice job.

We noticed you haven't been playing a lot of media lately. No worries, we just wanted to remind you how easy it is to enjoy your content on a ton of devices, anywhere. So wait, they can see what I'm watching?
Earlier today we sent an email to a small percentage of Plex users who (we thought) hadn't used Plex in a while, urging them to give it another shot. Seemed harmless enough, except it turns out we messed it up and ended up including a completely random mix of users (among them, some of our most active and beloved users).

To make matters worse, the wording in the email seemed to imply that it was being sent based on what folks are watching in Plex, which was most definitely not the case. We do not know or track what is in anyone’s library, and we do not know or track what people are playing. In order to make Plex work, we do keep track of things like user login times and when Plex devices were last seen. And we do occasionally use this data to send targeted emails (e.g. to let specific people know about issues impacting certain devices or operating systems).
Oh, ok then. :lol

i haven't bought an instrument in 10 years. since my main collaborator and i are planning on playing some shows soon, and i'll be playing guitar, i thought it was about time to have a new guitar to play on stage. it's also the least i've ever paid for a new guitar, but (once i added a buzz stop and replaced the 9's with 10's) it sounds fantastic. really excited to get back on stage.

The new Old 97s album cracked the top 10 on the billboard rock chart. :)
And i just now realized this, but their last album got up to 30 on the 200.
So this is crazy, but they are more popular now, 25 years in, than they ever have been.

We just passed a state budget that includes a biking / walking path that will pretty much span the whole damn state (was rumored to be one of the first things to be cut from the budget).

Oh, and just some other little thing...free tuition to state colleges for kids of parents earning under $100k a year.

Yeah, taxes are kind of shit in NY, but I like where they're going.

And so many people are pissed that it's even more awesome. I'm going to vote for him.

now if only he had been fired simply because he is a sexual predator, and not because the public found out and his advertisers pulled out of his show (though, seriously, good on them for doing that).

I'm cheered up by the fact that I didn't just wind up in the hospital (or worse)...

I was driving down the highway, when some giant chunk of metal seemed to fall out of the car in front of me. It happened so fast there was nothing I could possibly do to avoid it, and it bounced under my car and slammed up into the undercarriage so hard that my feet went numb. If I had been driving a few feet back it could have ricocheted through my windshield and ripped my head off.

Instead, I watched my life flash before my eyes, and just said "woah" while thinking of the myriad of ways that could have gone south.

I really keep underestimating sleep while taking it for granted. But yeah. A lack of sleep really makes my emotions go haywire, and I still sometimes forget that. Sleep, like crying just seems to purge me.

Seeing people in a good mood also helps me. Not just because I might also feel good myself, as well as knowing that I could've made their day brighter or more bearable or for the sake of general kindness and courtesy, but to also see that they didn't mean any harm either. It's also relieving.

Safeway is running a Monopoly game and the pieces have codes you can enter online. One of the prizes is a Fandango voucher and my son figured out that if you change the last digit of the code, it will always be a winner. So he entered a bunch showing us and we all thought it was funny. Well cue to Saturday when we wanted to print some of these vouchers out to go see Guardians and when my wife logged into her account it said that it was suspended for hacking. Hacking, that's hilarious.

Remembering that no matter what, big or small, fun and laughter are what actually sometimes gives things meaning as well as a reason to continue living, whether I get it or not. Realizing this, and reminding me this, also helps me gain enough perspective to know when to continue doing/pursuing something or when to just let it go/give up and walk away/move on.

my friend jon & i made our live debut as Lyra (http://lyrachicago.bandcamp.com) last night, and it was my first time playing a show since our old band broke up last august. so over 9 months without playing music on stage (during which time i released a lot of recorded music, but there's nothing like playing live).

despite some sound issues (our backing tracks fizzled in and out a few times...gotta get my own DI box) things went pretty well, and it felt so good to be back in the realm of live music. people responded very positively and we made a tiny bit of cash. all in all, a good night.

i finally feel like i have some really good friends, and we can all hang out in a group together. i'm 30. most people say that you make your life-long friends in college, but i didn't go to college. i didn't go to college. other than the twins i've known since we were all 6 months old (one of whom lives in arizona and i rarely see her when she comes into town, and the other lives here but works for riot fest so he's ALWAYS busy), i have ONE friend who i've known since we were 11 who is basically my sister, but she doesn't live here. so it's really nice to have cultivated such a great, small group of people who i feel truly comfortable around, and who completely accept me for who i am.

my wife went out of town this morning and i don't usually do well when i'm home alone, so i spent 7 hours with my friends alex & tiff tonight. we did a ton of stuff: we got slurpees (free slurpee day!), played video games, ate dinner that tiff made, watched stuff, played more video games, went to an art show, played a board game, hung out and talked while we listened to music, walked their dogs, and everyone was happy the whole time. it's so nice to have people like that in my life, who i don't have to worry about being too eager or excited about hanging out with. i had a great night.

On my ride home last night I saw a phone in the bike lane. I stopped and picked it up because it was outside a bar where people like to park in the bike lane, and I figured it'd be nice if the person who lost it got a phone in working order. It was a 6s+ and locked so I couldn't open it up for a "home" contact or whatever so I put it in my pack and went on my way. I figured I'd be getting a phone call eventually and sure enough I did. So I gave him my address and met him at my house a little later. Apparently it was his personal/work phone and he runs a towing company. He said that the phone was his life since he owned a small business - only him and his brother - and it was the way he called home as well. (As he was Hispanic I'm guessing he didn't mean the local calling area.)

He was overjoyed and tried to give me money. I told him to keep it, it's more important that he got his phone back. (This is the little thing coming up) He said in that case, here's my number. If you ever need a tow, call me and I'll be there. That was awesome.

New neighbors who've only been on the block for three weeks and, in addition to constant domestic fighting nearly every single day, were shooting up heroin in the driveway this morning. Fan-fucking-tastic.

I'm happy to report that these folks have already moved out after their kid was removed from the home, depriving them of money they would have used to pay rent (and undoubtedly more heroin). The kid is in a safer place, and the neighborhood itself is a little safer without them here anymore. So that cheers me up.

growing up i never really had an appreciation for rap music.
one day my son sits down next to me and says 'mom, you're going to watch something with me.'
he's a teenager. i jump on every opportunity to engage with him.
he ques up Straight Outta Compton.
(in my mind) i sigh and roll my eyes a bit; thinking to myself-for real?
i never imagined i would end up so engrossed in this movie. i never really understood the history, etc behind the 80's hype of rap music or what it represented.
what a remarkable movie. what a remarkable story. what a remarkable moment.
my son (in a change of roles) held (pulled) my hand to show me what he saw/heard in a music genre that i would've never given time to otherwise.
i have a new found appreciation for rap music. and now when he shares selections, or tells me about the artists in this new (to me) genre of music, i smile and think to myself-thank you for this 'one more' connection.

i finished two mixes (sadly just on spotify) on monday evening! one was an aaron turner & friends mix i had started for my friend a few months ago and kept forgetting about, and one was a mix for my best friend as a belated b-day present. both of them ended up being 2 hours long :p

I have absolutely fallen in love with Denver this week, more than a year since I've been here last, and I'm more sure than ever that I want to try moving here, or at least to Colorado.

Side note: If I had to give two pieces of advice for coming here, I'd recommend, 1) Go to a show at Red Rocks. It might be pricey and you'll have to be there hell early, but it will be absolutely worth it, and 2) Twist and Shout Records is absolutely awesome, and highly recommended if you're into records/music/movies/books/figures/admittedly hipster-ass shit.

You're welcome! I'm glad I could give some helpful input haha. I was actually coming back to say I'm happy to be back home and didn't get pulled over on my way back! :))) Time to enjoy some of the things I brought back, like the 16 vinyl records I bought, or the bong I bought for the tobacco I totally smoke! And wear this sick-ass t-shirt I got at the Gorillaz show.

Holy shit - Red Rocks was the better venue, hands down, but their show at the Sprint Center in KC a couple night earlier had a way better setlist, and literally included almost every song I've wanted them to play for my first time seeing them. GREAT show.

You can *be* a liberal, lefty, SJW and still *do* and say shitty, racist, or culturally appropriative or insensitive things. Looks like he knows he crossed the line, hence the videos being down - but he doesn't want to own it and wants to mumble about *Youtube blah blah revenue.*
His line - look I mock white artists too, I hated on Limp Bizkit - bwahaha.

Caffee. Most of the time I just make instant caffee which is not really a caffee at all, but I decided to slow down and bought small kettle which works also with induction (put water in bottom part, then ground coffee, and later coffee (the drink) will magically appear in the top part, smile), manual grinder, and for a start two different kinds of roasted caffee (I am not at home yet with terms like arabica etc). Almost forgot how good real caffee smells and tastes, and I will slowly investigate different kinds, found nice small shop with all these joys.

There is a book exchange box near where I live and I often drop books I don't need anymore in it. This weekend, when I went to drop a book, I ended picking up one too. It's a kids book; the one for preschoolers where the toddlers are presented to animals and where there's a little hole where you can feel the fur/skin of the animal in question.

The catch is that the book is written in Greek. So I'm going to use it to introduce myself to the Greek language. And no, I won't use Google Translate.

Omg. DYING.

Last night I went to a kink party and then spent the night in Manhattan. As I was heading home today, there were three cops at the train station who wanted to check my bag.

I'm high and started giggling and told them I went to a kink party last night. They laugh and say they still need to check. I say that is fine, knowing One of the cops say they went through TSA with some kink stuff on accident once. I have a blunt and half of a bottle of vodka in there. I roll the dice that they won't actually pull everything out, and will just glance in. Thankfully I was right. They opened the biggest pocket which had some tamer toys and my textbooks. Looked in for half a second, close it, and then send me on my merry way with my blunt and open bottle of liquor.

This is the first time I have ever been picked for the random bag check, and I can't stop laughing - of course it would be when I have all of this shit on me.. What if they would have legit searched and found some of the more off the wall shit I have in my bag? Good god.

I went to look at the bright orange thingy; I looked at the price ($9.45); I turned it over, my eyes went as big as saucers and I quickly walk to the cashier holding the $9.45 bright orange thingy close to me so that no one else could see what I had.

That's how I got out of there with a 2 qt cast iron enamel orange Le Creuset saucepan. FOR 10 BUCKS. My mom found nothing.

there's a little icon when you're making a post here that looks like a tree in a box. if you click that, a contextual menu pops up. just paste the URL of the image into there and hit OK!

Thanks, but I’ve always done that and get nothing with Imgur, where as Photobucket worked all the time. For example here’s a cute snowman cake:

After letting some things pile up for a few months (pieces of furniture and a TV that have all been replaced), I finally ended up going onto the local buy/sell/trade group on Facebook to get rid of some of it. I've already made $100 in about 3 hours. It mostly feels great just to have a little more space and less clutter, but a little cash on the side is nice too!

I have never understood why people get so grumpy about being facepalmed, anyway. It's just the counter to a Like.

It has a long history of meaning more than that, even on this board before it went all Facebook by incorporating a “Like” button (without also incorporating a thumbs-down dislike). The Picard image is historically used to convey visible frustration, it’s an overt and deliberate eye-roll. If one does not like a post, one may simply refrain from utilizing the “Like” button. Choosing to utilize the Picard meme is a statement in itself.

Wikipedia:

“Facepalm's meaning online is the same as the physical gesture's meaning in real life - it expresses frustration, disappointment, embarrassment, shock, surprise or sarcasm. Its online use is to portray emotions and feelings that otherwise may not be easily expressed through text alone. Facepalm is understood online because of its common usage in the real world. The facepalm gesture is a popular Internet meme to show a user's frustration or disappointment in an article, comment, or post from another user. It is often also used to indicate incredulous disbelief that another could make a statement that the reader considers unusually foolish or naive.”

The Facepalm says “that was a really fucking stupid statement.”

I hate the fucking thing, it and LIKE were not needed or used for over 35 years of forums and suddenly we need to rate statements with cushy idiotic emoticons.

Oh YAY! (Like button, vapid but at least cuts down the much-maligned “me, too” posts)

Facepalming excuses passive agressive behaviour and leads to a lot of built up resentment, as clearly exempliflified by cashpiles ridiculous implosion. He's an outlier, but is still very symptomatic of a larger problem on this board.

Either decide the topic or statement is not worth the time to engage, or do so eloquently, but doing neither and facepalming instead is an annoying mix of laziness and cowardice.

Yup, I wholeheartedly concur. Thank you, I think you summed it up very well.

I could have clicked “like” but that’s lazy, too, requiring minimal effort and the intellect of a toddler; this direct response required time, effort, and expansion of the concurrence, deliberately highlighting (in bold) what I feel is of particular importance. Hence, using actual communication. Communication is a deliberate thing, not passive. Its intent is shared; if not, it risks miscommunication.

Don’t give me this Modern Day bullshit; emoticons have existed since the fucking 80s, except mostly on AOL (aka the Short Bus on the Information Superhighway).

I turned off the Like/Facepalm notifications, I don’t even wanna know about that shit. Somebody posted some stats, here, about the number of likes per user vs. number of facepalms. I ain’t here since January of 2004 for popularity and ego stroking.

B.B. has meant bulletin board since 1979.

I can say it also means butt bite. But will all of you interpret it that way?

Here's an interesting article (https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/passive-aggressive-diaries/201611/4-reasons-passive-aggression-thrives-online):

Recently, as I was talking with a colleague about the phenomena of online passive aggression, he casually remarked, “Truthfully, passive aggressive behavior is just plain fun. Getting back at other people in socially acceptable ways is so easy to do these days now that so much of what we say and do happens through a keyboard instead of person to person.”

“What an honest comment,” I thought, “about such a dishonest way of communicating.” Indeed, taking jabs at others while eluding direct confrontation is the immediate gratification afforded by today’s technology and the modus operandi of the passive aggressive.

Meanwhile, this is all passive aggressive drift in this CHEERS ME UP thread.

Cheers me up: the fantasy of taking a blow torch to most of online, until everyone is required to use VI as an editor, again.

Anyway, as for what cheers me up, I was thinking about the top posts here on ETS this year.
1. The most funny - Twin Peaks, there's a surprising moment and Lynch's character doesn't look surprised at all. Someone responds "Well he wrote that." :-D
2. The most interesting - long detailed analysis of NTAE, with parts like "What you doing?" "Imagining all my family dead in great detail."
3. The most amazing - graphic description of NIN gig ending with full The Background World and total darkness, wow.
Sorry I would spend day searching for the exact posts and sorry for not remembering the authors, but thank you, people. :-)

I see the benefits of the Like button (positive reinforcement), but I don’t think the opposite is the Facepalm button; that’s way too loaded to be simple negative reinforcement.

Sometimes a community needs to let other members of the community know that what they say is hurtful to other members of the community, or some just need to make it public to the community that they disagree. A thumbs-down emoji would do this just fine, without passing judgment or shaming or inviting anger or hurt feelings. The Facepalm is universally grok’d as “you’re a moron.” That’s not a “dislike.”

This is what ETS members used to think was loads of fun: http://web.archive.org/web/20070217091539/http://www.echoingthesound.org:80/phpbbx/viewtopic.php?t=18555&sid=071596168f0850b571f44b38257f4b9b

I think we need a “sad” and an “angry” and a “laugh” emoji (and if we removed the Facepalm, I think that’d be awesome).

But this is the wrong thread for that discussion.

Ugh. I wish I could rescue kitties - career doesn't allow it though (being gone for weeks/months at a time). I've promised myself though that once I settle down, I'll be the one who goes to the local humane society and adopts the oldest cats they have. Although I'm honestly not sure how long that will last - I don't know if I can handle the emotional drain of my feline friends dying in closer succession than if I were adopting kittens or even just younger adult cats. But it breaks my heart to see those 10-12 year old cats just loafing around in the shelters. I want to take them all home!

I guess what I'm getting at is that old felines, with their lazy and (usually) loving ways, cheer me up.

Oh wow that must be totally awesome, living an hour from Sun Valley!! We live 40 minutes from Wilmot, which is now Vail-owned, and it's really convenient and local but the highest peak is, like, 250 feet, LOL. But, it's fun to just jump into the car and go. We usually go out west to Tahoe for at least a week, but Tahoe and pretty much everything out west has had really shitty snow; Wilmot actually had the same base as Heavenly for a while. But, today it's FIFTY DEGREES again, here, so if Wilmot isn't closed down again, it will be by this afternoon. The temps are expected to drop again so they can make more snow, so our biggest problem is waiting for snow and hoping it doesn't melt again. Have you been skiing out your way this season?

Chromecast Audio. The solution I was looking for - to send my music collection (bought digitals or my own EAC/LAME --extreme CD rips) on NAS server (Twonky on old Zyxel NSA310) to good old Yamaha receiver via optical cable, controlled by Android phone without turning anything else on. With Hi-Fi Cast app, even gapless playback is possible (the app has to do some transcoding or something though in this case), receiver reports as high as 96 kHz samplerate (e.g. Radiohead OKNOTOK FLACs), just works. Also LocalCast app is nice to send anything anywhere (even files from phone or samba server). Nice.

after all the shit we've been dealing with at our apartment lately (see the "how fucked was your day" thread), we decided to move. we spent all weekend looking at apartments, but ended up settling on the first place we looked at saturday morning. it's three blocks northeast of where we live now and it's slightly smaller, but it's all updated and not falling apart in the slightest. the kitchen has new SS appliances, the neighbors are friendly, and it's a first-floor walk-up (instead of third floor, like our current place). there's also a storage space in the brightly lit and not creepy basement, which is also where everyone keeps their bikes. and there's a bernese mountain dog who lives on the second floor! :D

we applied for it last night and heard back this morning that we got approved! so we'll be moving from april 1st to the 10th (new lease starts the 1st, old one ends the 10th) which is nice because it gives us time instead of having to do everything in one day. and we're definitely hiring a moving company.

anyway, it'll be nice to move into a place where we can be comfortable and not worry. i just hope the cats are ok with it :p

have a phone interview with Jellyvision this morning. i applied for a job there last year, but it was a full-time, permanent position, and my cover letter (having re-read it) was...pretty negative. this time it's for a (paid, full-time) apprenticeship position that only lasts a few months (but could potentially lead to a permanent position), and i reworked my cover letter so that it's fun and upbeat and makes a couple dumb jokes (they're all about dumb jokes at Jellyvision). and the best part is that this time, my friend alex (who works there) didn't have to ask them to give me a phone interview, they just asked me for one.

about 90 minutes until they call. i'm nervous but excited.

also, i couldn't find the work/job thread...i know we have one.

i think it went well! i tried to stay really positive and talked about wanting a job that is intellectually stimulating and emotionally fulfilling (they have software called ALEX that helps companies distribute insurance benefits to their employees in a fun and interactive way), and i made a few jokes that actually got some laughs! :D

We are about to land my DREAM commencement speaker, and I am just overjoyed. On the Student Association, we put aside 16k for a speaker because we want it to be special and memorable. This person is only charging 10k, but our Dean didn't like that price tag, even though we have WAY MORE than that allocated. I went and argued with him yesterday, and now we are officially making an offer to the speaker.

Plz send ur prayers 4 me.

Buying a new car and just feeling aaaaall of my transportation and car-related issues WASH. THE FUCK. AWAAAAY!

I can actually go places and do things. I can see my family more than once every 3 months. I don't have to drop at least $200 any time I NEED a car for one day. Fuck. Such a relief after the past year.

It's a 2013 Kia Soul Exclaim and so far I couldn't be happier with it. (Minus having to buy a special cord to use my iPhone6s in an 2013 car, but that's $8, so...)

Meet Marlon Bundo, a lonely bunny who lives with his Grampa, the Vice President of the United States. But when Marlon meets Wesley and falls in love, his life changes forever. (https://twitter.com/ChronicleBooks/status/975575855366680576)

nice to know that, with all the horrible shit happening, there are still people trying to do good things.

I found out that I got the job I applied for. It's only three miles from my house and WA is income-tax free so I get a 9.8% pay raise just from that.

Also I leave my boss and his insanity behind. I mean, when he said he wrote me a reference he said, "And you're lucky I'm writing it now because six months ago I wouldn't have written you one at all."

So i've been worrying about how i'm going t afford to move (my current place is...difficult) i was planning on having enough by summer if i lived without...well anything.

I come home this evening to find my credit card company has realized i was paying too much for my PPI (this was going on for nearly a year and i didn't expect anything to come from it) and given me a refund...of over £3,000

This has cheered me up a bit (a lot, i can afford to move AND not be poor)

I loved watching the Olympics on the Roku box: watching them at our leisure, we were able, for the first time, to see EVERY event. It was like all we did for a couple of weeks.

Well, I miss watching them and it turns out that ALL events are still on the NBC Olympic roku channel.
So I'm watching me some fucking Skeleton this morning :)

one year i couldn't figure out what it was and didn't realize it was coming from the computer, and i thought it was something paranormal and got really scared.
