finally have a pedalboard! i still feel like they're more expensive than they should be, but it'll be really nice to not have to throw all of my pedals/power supplies into a reusable trader joe's grocery bag. haha.

also happy that my holy grail pedal actually works. i had thought for over a year that it was dead and just never took the time to open it up, but it's still fully functional.

Fog over snow. Which, since we just got snowed on again — after (almost) two weeks of non-snow and general melting — I might see more than once this year.

Also, the rare moment when it feels like I'm on the right track with my transition and the doubt sort of falls away, however temporary. Felt it earlier tonight and it always feels so nice.

I didn't know where else to put this, but I saw Angela Lansbury on stage earlier tonight in Blythe Spirit, and it was amazing. You'd never know that woman is 88 years old from watching her. What made it even more special is the fact that this is her last tour that she's doing. She's not retiring, it's just the last time she's going out on tour.

the nice thing about playing drone/ambient music in a room full of people who aren't familiar with it is that NO ONE can tell when you fuck up (which i did...a lot).

Saw a new bird for my life list today: a female Painted Bunting (one of my photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/56431656@N06/16365251793/) showed up at a friend's feeder, just a quick 10-minute bus ride from my house. Painted Buntings (check out the gaudy males: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Painted_Bunting/id) are usually found back east (two separate populations on the southern plains and the Atlantic seaboard), but are rare strays to California; their provenance as wild birds here is often in question, however, due to being extremely common cage birds just south of the border in Tijuana (i.e., birds here are escapees). Nevertheless, for technical reasons you need not concern yourselves with, we have reason to believe this bird is wild.

Anyway, this bird is #486 on my life list - that #500 milestone inches ever closer. When you're a birder, any day when you see a new bird is a good day.

I love raptors so I've been watching the Berry College Eagle Cam, the 2 babies are growing so fast!

For years I've been tortured by some bird I can't identify. I swear I've only heard them downtown, and I've never actually seen one. But their calls always cheer me up … while simultaneously driving me me insane because I don't know where they are or what they look like.

The fact that I'm not a birder doesn't help. And just try to Google a bird by its sound … >_<

Nice to see another birder here, allegro.:)

JPH, rest assured that if I could directly help you to ID that bird, I would. In lieu of that, here's some suggestions, if you have the time and the energy.
1) I suppose you could try recording the call somehow and sharing it online (with date and location information, of course). Alas, I'm hardly an expert at identifying bird songs/calls myself; I have to re-learn them every spring/summer when all the migrants return.
2) Alternately (assuming you're in North America like me), check with your local Audubon Society and/or nearby nature centers for checklists of local birds, ask around for ideas of what your bird could be, and browse the All About Birds site I linked to for bird calls of species in your area. There's only so many birds that could be calling downtown, in a city center. In highly urbanized areas of U.S. cities, often the most common birds are exotics originally native to Europe, such as Rock Pigeon, House Sparrow, and European Starling; you might want to start with those.

But this isn't a bird forum. Still, if you or anyone else here on ETS has bird ID queries, I'll be happy to help through private correspondence.

There are APPS for that!!!

A few years ago, I found a beautiful bird, dead but still warm, on my driveway. Worried about how it died (West Nile?), I went online 1st to identify the bird, then to research its possible demise. I found both at once (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/12/141203-drunk-birds-animals-science-winter-global-warming/).

OK, now I'm determined to ID this bird once and for all.

The state Audubon Society has offices and a museum in town. But that's too easy — I wanna see what I can accomplish with the help of Google and maybe an app or two.

Somehow that slipped my mind. Thanks for reminding me, allegro. Joy Prevention Hotline, may I suggest Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab, and/or Birds Lite by National Geographic; both are free and can help you ID the most common species (and more importantly, have song/call samples you can listen to). Now I'm really curious what bird you could be hearing, and like you I cannot rest easy without having an answer. Be sure to let us know when you find out!

Well, not so hilarious in this case since it drank itself to DEATH which is pretty common in this area that time of year, which I didn't know until I found a drunk dead bird on my driveway.

Maybe if you tell us birders what the bird call sounds like, we can guess it ... or, at least, look it up based on the characteristics you tell us ...

After I posted on reddit to see if anybody had suggestions, someone asked if my VIN had a K in it -- if it did, there was a 50/50 chance he'd helped to build my car. I love the Internet. (My car's VIN does have a K. heh)

For those of you into vaping:

I got this at walmart and it is bringing me so much joy. The cartomizers for it are ridiculously expensive, but i learned how to refill them.
This is the platinum pack. It comes with two batteries and three cartomizers. Also, the little carrying case is a mobile charger. You plug it in and charge the "pack" itself. Then you can charge the little batteries without having to plug in.

The coolest part is that these things are on clearance. Instead of 60, i got it for 15. I also got a third battery and a 5 pack of cartomizers...all on clearance.

I still use my big aspire vaporizer, but i ADORE this thing. it's like carrying a real pack of smokes. and since you can refill the cartomizers, (look it up on youtube if you are interested,) then you can make it whatever flavor/nicotine strength you like.

I think I finally figured out the cause of my horrible nightly leg cramps: calcium deficiency.

Last weekend and the first few days of this week were awful cramp wise. I woke up multiple times a night with my feet or legs cramping up. It was driving me crazy. Then in the middle of the week I started to make sure to drink a glass of milk every night (I have to be careful about my potassium intake and milk is pretty high in potassium so I can't have very much and have been avoiding it) and maybe it's a coincidence but the last three nights that I've been drinking it I haven't had a single cramp. Not even a minor one.

I really hope this finally solves the problem for good because I've been dealing with this for almost a year and it SUCKS.

I've had a few coworkers mention that they can tell I have lost weight. When I checked about a week ago I had lost 24 pounds (SO CLOSE to 25...so close). I then gained a couple back, but still. So I am hoping I'll be 25 pounds down soon. I have a lot to go but it's a damn good start. My clothes aren't fitting differently yet, which is kind of weird. And also the hormones can reshape your body a bit so at some point that could change the way clothes fit, too. So I've got both going on. ha ha

But yeah, it feels good. Definitely cheered me up this morning (which I needed).

I'M ABOUT TO BE REALLY GROSS STOP READING NOW

So I had some sort of tiny cyst on my arm that ended up getting a bit bigger and really irritated in the past month or so. Went to the dermatologist who put me on antibiotics, but I accidentally popped it this morning, and then committed to what had been a mistake and UNNNGGGGHHH IT WAS SO GOOD. I wish I'd been expecting it because it went by so quickly and I want to relive the moment. So satisfying.

^ Gone through something similar. Not that I'd want to do it all over but yes the release of pressure it's a real thing.

As for me it's been an interesting and long couple weeks at work, I still haven't really processed some of it, and I've been doing this fit a while now. Today the chest cold I've had the past week broke into a full on head cold etc, on top of general exhaustion. My 1 day off. Also for whatever reason I woke up at 8:30 this morning too better fully experience the shitty nature of how I felt.

Now I realize this may seem better suited for the "piss you off thread." If not for the few things I found glorious today; not doing shit all day, stuffing my face, sleeping whenever I felt like it, the uber long shower I took, and last but not least the tiny bit of Mary Jane I smoked that is mostly responsible for me doing anything besides being a total pile.

@Jinsai (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=272) - This is going to be a bit hard for me to word, but I'm sure you'll understand that I don't mean anything bad by it, as I'm also very-well aware that you're a dedicated, passionate, well-read and knowledgeable fan of music as a whole that highly values quality and taste, while actually being able to accept tastes that you're not so fond of, or just flat-out aren't into.

Anyway, the fact that you out of all people made this thread, actually made me smile. This also seems like Love Listing again, and it probably is, but yes, it was certainly nice to see that you made that thread overall. :)

http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/3795-Random-Positive-Musical-Opinions

It could also serve as an excellent way to balance out the Shitty Music. (The Nickelback Thread) and the Controversial Music Thread as we've definitely seen more than enough of those. (That's definitely not to say that they're bad threads either, but it would be also nice to see a general thread on what types of music people like/love, and it would be also great for recommendations as well.)

Saw a new bird for my life list today - and when you're a birder, any day when you see a new bird is a good day. The bird, in case you're wondering, was a Cassin's Sparrow (see my photo here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/56431656@N06/18087716020/), normally found in arid grasslands of Arizona, Texas, and other such states, and rare here in California. This sparrow - #487 on my life list - has been present in the sagebrush around the Castaic Sports Complex for several days now.

As a bonus, before carpooling with another birder to the sparrow, me and a bunch of other birders saw a brilliant male Rose-breasted Grosbeak in the hills overlooking the Ballona Freshwater Marsh (see my photo here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/56431656@N06/18089273029/in/photostream/). Another bird that has been present for several days at its location, the Rose-breasted Grosbeak was a new addition to my L.A. County bird list (having previously seen it in Kern and Humboldt counties); it is a rare but regular visitor to the western states during migration periods. A similar pattern of vagrancy to the east holds true for the Black-headed Grosbeak (http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black-headed_Grosbeak/id), common throughout the west from spring through fall.

You must have a good camera. I'd show you my iPhone photo, but it's shite.

Actually, the Snowy Owl photo (and all my photos prior to last July) was taken with a point-and-shoot camera, nothing spectacular. In this case, I set the camera up against my companion's spotting scope to get a better picture - we birders call that "digiscoping", though most do it with their smartphones (which I do now, too, having upgraded to an iPhone from my old flip phone only last October). Last July I got a DSLR camera as a (belated) college graduation gift, and my bird pictures have markedly improved as a direct result.

TLDR: the Snowy Owl photo is not representative of most of my older bird photos.

i used to be a fairly prolific tagger growing up in dallas. i wrote "eleven," "eleveno," and "eve (as in elEVEn.)" I also wrote "pure" after going to jail for writing eleven, but i eventually started writing eleven again, or Pure 11:11...ANYWAY

i got a friend request from a young graf kid who i've never met. my brother got one too (he used to write Aztec.) This kid figured out who we were and said seeing our tags in his east dallas neighborhood growing up is what inspired him to start doing graf. And he is BAD ASS, about ten times better than i ever was.

i used to get a lot of friend requests like that on facebook after i stopped writing, made my identity public, and joined some facebook groups like "dallas graffology," but it's been awhile, and no one has ever been so nice about it.

but i'm not dying and i totally thought i was. that's pretty goddamn cheerful.

The current protest at reddit.com gives me the hardest justice boner possible to men. It's like witnessing something from the history books, just in a 21st century context. It's also great to see entirely different subreddits (aka countries, if we want to continue with the history analogy) joining forces, and the difference in some of these subreddits' responses.

The bridge is burning now, I just hope it will entirely collapse on the admins. Hngggg!

(The drawback is that I can't do shit on reddit now, haha. Oh, wait, gonewild is not participating. Well then...)

I have been begging them to come out here ever since i moved to the panhandle.
When i saw them in denver last month, i gave them a particularly good pitch as to why they should come to amarillo.
They've been doing it for 22 years and have never been here.

My roommates just asked me if I was really willing to keep the kitten that one of them brought home from a barn where the owner had been shooting cats to reduce their numbers. She's about 2 months old, and her name is Moot. They can't keep affording her, and they don't want to have to pay for all the pet fees at their new place.

YES, PLEASE. <333333333 Just need to get my new apartment lined up next weekend and wait this out for three more long weeks.

Aaaaaand it's mostly over, everyone treated a protest like a revolution here.
Even the biggest subreddits showed solidarity for each other and joined to fight the cause. Reddit did not go bankrupt, but the mods of those subreddits (and even their users, because some subreddit made a vote about it) essentially paralyzed the site as much as they could. I don't think you'd like to wake up, with limited water, food, no electricity and only half of the public transports available, even if it was just for 12 hours or something.

If by revolution you mean no one died and there is no new ruler at Reddit then it certainly was not it. But I'm pretty sure when the biggest subreddits (talking about ~9 million, I repeat, MILLION subscribers each - which certainly correlate, but even if they are the exact same 9 M people, they still visit both subreddits which is still invaluable traffic) show their fangs because they reached their boiling point after endless empty behind the same promises, which according to them, has been going on for years now, and in the end, the reddit admins had to come forward, and not only make another promise of improvement, but actually set dates for them, which are now transparent for everyone... well, that is pretty much as big of a revolution as it can get on reddit. There was no reason to continue with the blackout, since they got what they demanded, so as cool as it would sound that reddit is being blacked out for a whole week, it's rather counter-productive for everyone involved. And don't forget, the transparency means the admins can't fluke their promises this time. Not only it was shown that the biggest subreddits (excluding funny, which was among the first to join in on the fight, then possibly got forced open) are willing to do this, but this time, the millions of users are aware of this shit and make no mistake that they would side against the admins even more fiercly.

But my biggest justice boner comes from the fact that the people who started it all (aka the moderators of these huge-ass subreddits) are not reddit employees, they are basically volunteers who enjoy what they do in their free time, but can be terminated in an instant.

I think if we exclude the endless possibilities of a cyber-walfare, this event was rather important in the history of Internet. Not as exciting as if Reddit collapsed then slowly faded out over the next years, like it happened with oh so many huge sites before which seemed invincible, but pretty meaningful and worth analyzing how one thing led to another.

Long story short, I GOT MY TAX REFUND, which led to me moving into my apartment early, so I inspected my new apartment today! :D Started moving in last night, but it was dark because my power couldn't be turned on until today, so I couldn't really get a good look at it! Basically a "big" studio, end of my building, and there's only one floor, so I only share a wall with one other person. It looks awesome. I have a new washer and dryer, and what looks like a new stove, too, and new carpet. And because my mom will take ANY reason to go to the new-ish IKEA, she's offering to buy me all my new furniture.

Also, while I was loading my car yesterday, a girl's dog went nuts and just LOVED me for some reason, so her owner walked over, me and her talked, and she actually lives in my building! Which would be awesome - if I wasn't moving out in two days. She gave me her number, though, and she's hella cute, so we'll see how that goes. :) Good-ass start to the week.

Took a trip to California last week to visit a friend of mine. I thought it was going to be a pretty relaxed trip, probably just hanging out around town, shooting the shitz but we ended up just driving three of the days I was there, just seeing where the road took us with no particular destination in mind.

Well, we ended up in Angeles National Forest one day and I hiked part (a very small part) of the Pacific Crest Trail. Which was pretty awesome. I thought I did pretty good (the hike was almost 3 hours which, for someone as out of shape as me, was pretty cool) but then I topped myself on Saturday when my friend and I went up to Red Rocks State Park and hiked to the top of a mountain! I guess that's probably amateur stuff to a lot of people but that was a first for me. It was a pretty incredible feeling when we got to the top. I took a bunch of pictures but they don't do the experience justice.

So yeah. It was a great trip. I am looking forward to going back at some point, though not any time soon (I am done with traveling for the year. Need to give my wallet a rest).

replaced it with a TP Link Archer C5 which does Wireless AC (the new protocol) and HOLY SHIT is it fast! i am now getting 88Mbps WIRELESS (i was getting about 25 before) and it actually established a gigabit connection with the modem. i am beyond happy, and will continue to be as long as it keeps working.

aaaaaand it didn't actually fix the problem. on the phone with ComCrap right now trying to figure out what the problem is. at least this time when it dropped, i saw that the "Internet" light on my modem had started flashing, which means it's likely a problem at the central office or somewhere in between. so the bad news is i bought a new router i technically didn't need, but the good news is that it's a really great, really fast one. : /

My back and hip were fucked up all day, we got stupid busy at work. However, I now have two days off, and I think me and this new lady are hitting it off pretty good. Sitting down, that's also a real thing.

Edit: Seeing a dude today about my back!

just found the missing "1979" disc from my original Aeroplane Flies High box set, which i thought i had lost sometime in the last 10 years.

it was upside down in a Zeena Parkins CD case (along with the zeena parkins disc under it), which i realized i had never imported into my itunes library.

i am elated!

Going for a long walk. Explored two local parks I'd never been in before. Nice weather, clear head.

Some guys don't know that when you fart, depending on how you're sitting, the fart can like go inside of your vagina. Sharing this knowledge cheers me up.

Then sometimes the fart just sits in your vagina. Little bubble of fart air.

this one time, years ago, me and this girl were having sex and in the middle of the whole thing she let out this giant fart. we both just froze and stared at each other super awkwardly for a few seconds, and then we both started busting up laughing. it was fucking beautiful. probably one of the funniest memories of my life.
