View Full Version : Wiltern 2009. Wave Goodbye. A rememberance.

I've been lucky enough to be at a good chunk of great NIN shows of the years and was lucky enough to have made all of the final Wave Goodbye shows in LA, minus the Henry Fonda (I had to fly back to NY for a day of work after the rescheduling due to TR getting sick). I remember arriving in LA, being deep in the grips of addiction, and going through my "stash" way too quickly to be able to withstand the rescheduling issues, and my life was a fucking mess.

But anyways...

I'm just getting done watching the show on Youtube while cleaning my house and holy shit. We got 3+ hours. Mike Garson for 5 songs. Dave Navarro for 3. Dillinger Escape Plan for 2. Atticus for 2 and what would become the most recent version of live NIN. Two 6 song encores. Etc.

It was an incredibly special night for me and I'm enjoying reminiscing right now so I figured some of you may too and feel good sharing your memories of that night. Holy fuck was it one to remember.

This was a pretty incredible night. I had two tickets to the Fonda and connected with a fan who had two tickets to the Wiltern, so we because each other's +1's and had a great time getting to know each other while waiting in line and in the car after the shows.

The only bummer was we missed the pit wristband part of the line by maybe 20 minutes for the Wiltern despite getting in line pretty early. That would have been incredible. I've been to that venue a bunch, and it was clearly not designed for standing, so you have to find the right spot to be able to see well.

But yes, the show itself was insane. There was such an energy and emotion surrounding everything. I remember not really to process that this might be the last show ever, which is probably good since it retrospect it would only end up being a 4 year break. But how fun to have so many little surprises throughout the night. It was kind of like the recent Cleveland event where Trent gave himself permission to appreciate everything he's accomplished and do a show for us but also for himself. The Atmosphere cover is maybe the best example of this—a song that clearly meant so much to him that he wanted to cover it at their final show. He may have been wearing a towel on his head just to keep sweat from getting in his eyes, but it added to this feeling like a private moment for him. Like, yes, I know there's an audience, but I'm a kid alone in my bedroom crying to Joy Division records for the next few minutes.

Really beautiful memory. :)

I didn't make it to LA, but I was fortunate enough to catch all four NYC shows...truly incredible memories, though increasingly impressionistic over time.

It's such a shame that the Wayback Machine's ETS snapshots didn't capture individual threads. I would love to be able to revisit contemporaneous reactions on the tour journals and just soak in the nostalgia.

Well, there was a fan made project that got started and a bunch of people donated money to it as it was getting produced in a sound/video studio but the guys behind it ended up taking the cash and were never seen again. It's a shame too, there were teaser clips and it looked promising but sadly it will never see the light of day.

It was released in both audio and video files. Just the physical products that people ordered were never made or sent. Also, the actual video edit was pretty mediocre. It's available for download on ninlive: https://ninlive.com/shows/2009/20090910.html
