Man. Music video premieres were a thing, weren't they? "One of the most minimalistic music videos that we've seen in quite a long time, coming from a man that I guess a lot of people are looking to to be the future of rock n' roll" No pressure! Here we are 28 years later, Nine Inch Nails plays deceptively minimalist live shows against a piss-stained curtain (having pioneering tech-heavy live production techniques in multiple tours past), and Kennedy's one of the more rabid Fox Business News personalities. The future of Rock n' Roll is weird.

That kinda makes it look like Trent was considering using the Russell Mills art of the distressed logo as the cover, before deciding on the one they ended up using (titled "Wound").

So this isn't exactly NIN, but, uhhhh...

...NIN fans in the Graphic Design department, i guess?...

One of their early Discord QOTD's (back when those were a thing) was similar, I'm guessing nobody was interested in chasing potential copyright infringement money. Still funny that they subtitled it NIN Logo....

Your post is better as it's far more aesthetically pleasing.

I think ima delete mine: the context remains in the quote.

But, yeah. I still can't believe that this little band with whom I fell in love in 92, with Broken, is now ubiquitous enough to spawn fucking CAR LOGOS.

Let me ask you this, though: you're talking about NIN discord? I never wanted to participate, as, direct and continued interactions with bands I love, has created some awkward situations.

So did NIN post this, or was it a member of the discord? And this was part of.the Queen of the Damned portion?

Jokes aside, it's Quote of the Day? Or Question of.the Day?

Yes it was an early question of the day, so that picture came directly from a discord admin. Given the amount of involvement from the band in the first few weeks it's a safe bet TR or Kraw came up with the question. The band doesn't seem to be on as much anymore. The biggest difference is it's almost entirely stream of consciousness, better than Facebook but the main threads aren't for archival purposes and there's a good bit of circular discussion.

I'm not familiar with the Queen of the Damned portion. Was that part of the unofficial discord?

i wouldn't know shit about any discord, aside from the general existential horror i've felt, pretty much every day of my life: that's what brought me HERE :P

Queen of the Damned is the third, and imho, best book of Miss Anne Rice's 15 Vampire Chronicles.
Being a man who's read 29 or 30 of Anne's books, starting at age ten... when i see QOTD, i don't think Question or Quote of the Day.
I think Queen of the Damned.
You can thank your god or hail your satan, that NIN wasn't involved in the godawful film "adaptation" of QOTD.
And, god help us, i'm surprised that they weren't: the '02 soundtrack included Marilyn Manson, Orgy, Korn, Static X...fucking Tricky and Kidneytheives ffs.

sorry for drift.

I saw that that woman at the center of this case alleges that Chris Vrenna started dating her when she turned 18, after Manson had started his abuse of her when she was 16. Oh boy. If true, Vrenna was under the age of 30 I believe when they may have started dating. Not the worst thing we've ever read in this realm, but not a great look either.

I discovered two of the Ghosts tracks used during the discussion of the civil trial in the OJ: Made In America documentary, Part 5.

The emotions those songs evoke on me, are completely at odds with the heavy subject matter of the doc, so if anything hearing them made me feel really uncomfortable at the time.

This has been out for awhile now, so it might be old news. I was 12, 13 years old when these events took place, so I have always been secretly obsessed with this stuff. I love reading books on it, watching docs, I loved the People vs OJ Simpson docu-drama too. Even watching old CNN footage brings me way back.

Anyways, back on topic, what sort of reactions do you have to hearing Ghosts tracks "in the wild"?

It hasn't happened too much, but when I do hear one, I usually get a big grin on my face. If I happen to be watching it with someone else, I'll then awkwardly explain that it's a NIN track, and how it's from Ghosts, and how Trent & Atticus do film scores now, by which point their eyes will glaze over and they'll politely ask to get back to the show.

No. The Melvins opened for that show (substituting for an ill PWEI).

As best as I can tell, based on the details and circumstances cited, the concert dates in the lawsuit are Dallas - Sep 15, 1995 and New Orleans - Dec 9, 1995. Later, it was Dallas - Mar 23, 1999 and New Orleans - March 25, 1999, and then all the tour dates after that for another month or so, which included two dates in New York state, the basis of the lawsuit.

Ah. I get the Brian and Georgie Musical Review and Melvins/Jim Rose Circus shows mixed up...not the content of the shows: rather, which one was first.
My mind is going...I can feel it. I was 14.

But I'm gonna have to look into this. I don't remember Brian headlining an all ages Dallas shows in 95.

Edit: ok, 2 Brian shows in 95, both at clubs. Definitely was the Deep Ellum Live show (all ages). Bit of a rough reputation for such deeds: I have personal experience with Type O and Life of Agony attempting to lure my 16 year old GF and 15 year old friend backstage, without me.
I bet some of you 42-45 year old Dallas cats were at that Manson show.

I agree, which is odd because I love what they did with Autechre, PWEI or (of course) Wipeout for instance, but with NIN it never quite fit... And what I'm seeing here doesn't make me feel terribly inspired either. I think they work best in abstract minimalism, and somehow I guess Reznor is asking a bit more than that ? Although I'd really love to see their "classical" style applied to a NIN era...

For those who don't know the Roland TR-808 is a legendary drum machine that was used primarily in Hip-Hop and R&B so it's cool to see NIN get a nod thrown in there after all Pretty Hate Machine has a lot of Hip Hop influence going on.

Doesn't say anything about melodies. Pretty sure it goes deeper than that: beats, textures, harmonies, chord changes, etc. ETS and Toolshed people would've found out all the stolen melodies long ago. It can as well be just maynardspeak for "getting inspiration from <smth>".

With all due respect,.he's SPECIFICALLY talking about stealing notes, and notes = melodies, and he's talking about HIS work, as a singer: not drum beats and chords and such.

They're talking about songs from Thirteenth Step.

Counterpoint: Weak and Powerless, the song in question, is "stealing" a drum beat from a Tapeworm song, which was later reinterpreted by Puscifer under the title Potions. Trivia: Though Trent wrote the beat, it would have been Josh Freese playing it in Tapeworm, and in A Perfect Circle - although in the Puscifer song, the beat is briefly heard at the beginning before the song drops into half-time, and is performed by Tim Alexander - the original drummer for A Perfect Circle, before Freese joined.

So he's specifically talking about drum beats (and drums can be notated using notes while also not being melodic) and they're all friends anyway!

I feel you, @Leviathant (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=1) .

However, note the question from this Beato: "...it's the NOTE choices that you make, that I call 'haunting tones.' Is this the way that you hear these things, or, do you experiment and LOOK for places to go to these particular notes?"

Then, MJK mentions the "professional steal." He mentions PJ Harvey, and then, "Trent, on The Fragile: he's stealing shit all over that album, but I'M stealing from his stolen goods."

Obviously, MJK isn't a studio drummer, to my knowledge.

I'm damn sure not saying these cats aren't friends. But, unless MJK was veering away from the question, wildly, I'm PRETTY sure he's talking about vocal melodies.

Just my humble opinion. I'm just a Humble Tumbleweed.

The one on streaming and digital is censored because it comes from a previous release that was censored. The two versions that weren't released that are part of the 2004 live shows are only available in the box set on the DVDs and are uncensored.

Seems that this is a new upload of a fix (of sorts) to some previous footage. Here's the description:

This video footage of NIN from the Summer of 1990 playing a show in Washington DC is not new. However, for the most part the audio was lost and has been posted as a mostly silent movie essentially. The audio from that show is lost from what I understand. I felt all of the footage was exceptional so to that end I added concert audio to provide a more enjoyable experience and let everyone enjoy all of the footage. The I used a little bit of editing magic and have restored some audio hopefully in a convincing way using a couple other shows from that tour. I also upscaled the video a bit. Please enjoy.

Oh wow. I just checked out that version uploaded on the NIN Live Archive. It is far superior in quality to the version I used AI models to enhance/upscale. I just sent the person who posted it a request for permission to run that version through the three AI video enhancing models I ran the lower quality version through and add in the audio as I had done before. If that is the case, there should be a much much better version coming soon. I am not hearing the faint audio yet, but I have not tried to run it through headphones.... so likely it will be the same deal as I had done before combining audio from 3 shows of the same tour. Is it a vocal/a cappella version of the intro to "Somewhat Damaged" playing? It's the only thing I thought it might be.

The repeated sequence of four chromatic* notes could be interpreted as a reference to Somewhat Damaged

*I do not have perfect pitch, it's possible that what's sung is not in fact chromatic.

I did wonder if that's what they were referring to, but it's hard to say if that's meant to be a reference or just something that happens to sound a little bit like alike.

Bumping my post from a few weeks ago now that the episode is publicly available on YouTube. Trixie and Katya mention their love of Nine Inch Nails in the first minute of the episode.

Martin Atkins opens an Museum of Industrial Rock in Chicago. NIN, Ministry, Pigface, etc... memorabilia from his time.

https://www.npr.org/2023/01/19/1149977756/what-to-know-about-the-chicago-museum-of-post-rock-and-industrial-music

Appointment only, more details here: https://www.facebook.com/PPIMChicago

Came here to post about this. I went last weekend. Martin is a great archivist and has held on to a lot of memorabilia over the decades. Fortunately a lot of people have also donated items to the museum and it is growing very fast.

The tour started off going down to the control room in the basement studio and listening to NIN PHM demos. Martin prefaced this listening session with a story about going on tour in one of his bands (PIL I think) and how it was too expensive too bring out a brass section. One of the tour stops (Cleveland) had two musicians come out to play the brass parts and Trent was the saxophone player. Trent gave Martin a demo at that time and this was that demo. We also listened to a PiL demo, Skinny Puppy (The Process sessions) demos and a Killing Joke instrumental demo.

The rest of the tour was Martin showing each section of the exhibit telling stories about everything. The NIN wall is pretty extensive.

The Hard Times: Uncovered Diaries Reveal Johnny Cash Was Initially Planning to Cover “Closer” (https://thehardtimes.net/music/uncovered-diaries-reveal-johnny-cash-was-initially-planning-to-cover-closer/)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Recently discovered diaries from the late country music legend Johnny Cash show he was first hoping to record a rendition of Nine Inch Nails’ provocative single “Closer” instead of “Hurt,” sources confirmed.

“This is a truly stunning development,” said Johnny Cash Museum representative Tasha Elridge about the diaries, which have been authenticated and were donated anonymously by a relative of Cash. “While Johnny’s rendition of ‘Hurt’ stands as one of his greatest achievements in a career full of them, this chapter in his story has now been forever altered by the knowledge that he was first outlining a version of the song arguably best known for the ‘I wanna fuck you like an animal’ line. In fact, ‘Hurt’ to appeared to be his fourth choice after ‘Head Like a Hole’ and ‘March of the Pigs.’ Almost like he never even wanted to cover ‘Hurt’ in the first place.”

Further confirmation regarding the validity of the diary entries, dated between May and August 1997, was given by Nine Inch Nails founding member Trent Reznor.

“I thought it’d be best to keep this to myself. But now the cat’s out of the bag,” said Reznor. “Johnny reached out to me about how he’d been working out a version ‘Closer’ on a Martin DX. He even played a little for it over the phone when we were on the ‘Fragility’ tour. Even over the crackly landline static, you could tell it was something special. And he understood that just because it’s a song that references sex, that doesn’t make it a ‘sex song.’ I really wish we could’ve gotten a proper version. Instead, Maroon 5 covered it, which made me regret ever writing it.”

Though Cash’s cover of “Closer” remains unrealized and unrecorded, many have offered speculation about it and the impact it would presumably have.

“Based on available data we have regarding Johnny Cash covers of Nine Inch Nails songs we can safely assume that his take on ‘Closer’ would be fraught with the same end-of-life solemnity as ‘Hurt.’ Though perhaps not,” said associate Pitchfork editor Adam Balsewicz. “After all, he did that little known cover of Baha Men’s ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’ that was even more rowdy than the original just before he passed. That man was a total enigma.”

At press time, the subsequent discovery of S&M clothing and paraphernalia by Cash’s estate indicated he was also planning to recreate the song’s video.

Like millions of other folks, I’ve been obsessed with Barbenheimer as of late: largely because of memes, obviously, but also because the dichotomy poses intriguing questions about how we contextualize and compare blockbuster films, up to and including their music. Barbie’s soundtrack is pretty self-explanatory, a collection of radio-friendly (read: sometimes mind-bumblingly safe) pop songs curated and produced by Mark Ronson; in stark contrast, Ludwig Göransson’s Oppenheimer score serves a more pragmatic purpose, driving home the story’s immense stakes through tightly controlled dynamics and complex orchestral arrangements. Basically, the former’s a dopamine buffet that doesn’t expect listeners to have seen the original flick, though it certainly helps; the latter expects familiarity with, or at least respect for, the source material on the listener’s part. These approaches are by no mutually exclusive, but they rarely, if ever, overlap, which is what makes Reznor & Atticus Ross’ score for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem so compelling: it’s a stellar collection of short form tracks that perfectly encapsulate franchise’s badass cyberpunk spirit. I haven’t seen the movie yet — it came out yesterday, after all — so I can’t speak definitively to how the viewing experience factors into the soundtrack’s success on a broader level. Nevertheless, I can say that “Do You Need A Veterinarian?” and “I Just Met You and You Almost Killed Me” slap, bound to enthrall Nine Inch Nails diehards, industrial snobs, goths, synthwave nerds, ’80s kids, and — thanks to the minimal, NES-styled synths driving standouts such as “Attack On a Titan”— even chiptune heads. Seth Rogen, who starred in, wrote, and produced the movie, described Reznor and Ross’ work as “incredible.” Is he biased? Definitely. Is his assessment correct nevertheless? You bet. It’s a whole damn double feature. Just don’t forget the pizza, dudes.

Looks like the upcoming 4K edition of Natural Born Killers (https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=33049) will reinstate Burn into the actual film. Apparently it was included in the original theatrical release and early video releases, but was replaced with different music at some point.

Couple of mentions of Trent in this video on the Donkey Kong Country underwater level theme song.

Yeah, the other version was the director's cut. Had yet another Leonard Cohen song over the credits. The Leonard Cohen music is the same in all released versions. No changes there. Burn was only used briefly in the last scene and that is the only thing that was changed in the director's cut, and then for the Theatrical version in later Blu-ray releases (but there for the initial VHS and Laserdisc releases). Burn never played over the credits. So now Burn has been re-instated in the Theatrical version, and will be in the director's cut for the first time ever on the upcoming 4K/Blu-ray release.

Still not clear to me whether it's just a snippet or the full song

Still not clear to me whether it's just a snippet or the full song A short snippet while shots of 1994 criminals flash on the screen. The only reason they are making a big deal about this brief Burn excerpt is that they received tons of e-mails about it because the Blu-ray of NBK had replaced it with another snippet of random drums. It's never been the whole song.

The VHS of the Director's Cut used to include the Burn music video as a bonus feature and at first, I was hoping that meant the music video would be included again (on both discs), but yeah, I think what they're saying is both cuts now use the "original" ending with Burn as seen in this video:

So yeah, unfortunately just a snippet. I'm glad they've restored this ending in the Director's Cut (it was probably the only thing better about the theatrical cut). It would be nice to have the music video in high quality as a bonus feature, but I guess there's always YouTube/Vimeo.

To be fair it seems Trent is the ONLY thing Richard talks about...

Anyone know the reason the music was replaced in the first place?

Probably licensing complications. Warner Brothers didn't originally want to release the Director's Cut, because their home video division wouldn't release MPAA unrated content at the time. Instead it was Trimark, under their home video imprint Vidmark, who released the DC instead. So maybe the sync license for that track was invalidated on home video releases, and Warner's didn't bother to reinstate it when they first reissued the movie themselves. (I do seem to remember the deluxe double VHS version may have included the music video as a bonus feature? With Stone's spoken introduction to go with it?)

As another sidebar, I just checked my collection and I only have a Warner's-released DVD version of the Theatrical cut without "Burn" (ie. the worst possible version)... so I guess I feel okay about buying it again on Blu-Ray! The tribal drumming track they used in that spot just doesn't work as well as that thunderous digitally distorted beat from "Burn" does.

That Vidmark double VHS Directors Cut was the only place to find the Burn music video for a while, which is the only reason I still have it.
