Arguably one of the greatest Hip-Hop producers/rappers of all time, his prolific career spans almost of a decade of ground-breaking material. With his upcoming follow-up to "I'll Sleep When You're Dead," I think 2012's "Cancer For Cure" has a lot of promise and could be one of the year's best releases. A few months ago El released a track with Adult Swim from the upcoming album that you can listen to here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6NVW93Jibo&feature=player_embedded

I think it's a pretty nice track but I have extremely high expectations for his next full solo album, however I've never known the man to disappoint. El's also been working (as far as I'm aware) exclusively as Killer Mike's producer on his next project, "R.A.P. Music" although I'm not a gigantic fan of KM's prior work.

If El-P's misc. work from 2011 is any reflection of what's to come this year, I'd say we're in for a lot of great music. If anyone's unfamiliar with his work, here's a few songs you might enjoy:

I'm not usually into Southern hip-hop, but El-P's production here fucking kills! I'll be buying this album day one just because of him:

Definitely agree with you there. I haven't been a fan of just about anything coming from the south since Outkast's (but more importantly Goodie Mob) hayday, but I'm very stoked to hear this album. El really just keeps pumping out astonishing material on everything he's associated with.

It's been almost exactly five years since his last sublime album I'll Sleep When You're Dead. The new, uh, LP called Cancer for Cure comes out on May 22. Check out "The Full Retard (http://pitchfork.com/player/download/3706/)" as a preview.

Lyrics just posted:
Got a strain un-contained that could turn parade zombie, walk with an army on me, stalked by the harm and armor posse, prolly got me on a radar with a dot, these watching, plotting minions of the lower god scene. Shit hawks abound, in the town of bullet dodging I'm a Rocky, run a hundred a mile before my coffee. Shitty little sick kid, the Gipper's hitting for dolo now. I'm rarified, signal lit, verified bossy. Fuck your droid noise, void boys' 'noid ploy, oi oi, I'll rugby kick the shit out your groin, boy! Oy vey, the slayers of your harmony porn life throat-fuck your lucky day, the flight of a torn kite.

Holy smokes! City blown to the bone, the death server, fit a Hertz with a burner, whip to the church of murder sermon, just a Cassandra too drained to painfully word it further. Future of a gerbil: up ass of masochist. That's my word up, so you should

pump this shit like they do in the future

pump this shit, in your floating whip system
pump this shit, in the bread line, the prison,
pump this shit, from the chip under your wrist skin (you are so fucking paranoid),

I am sam, I am known to go H.A.M., the full retard playing taps on a keytar, in the Benz or the Beamer. Either, etherlicious or rebel-yelling the theme of Son of Forgotten Freedom, rebel "ariba-riba!" Metal and man have melted, settle in to the FEMA, dream a, your polluted house speaker, leader yes indeed a, dawn of the dirt and doom draws nearer. Here's a mirror, mirror to peer, fear grows clearer, steer a path away from the panic of our era. Pyramided, ocular, unlided insignia-weirder: here's another burner born and big in ya sector, rectified and fly sound selector. I'm a fucking ill, trill, kill at will etc.,

Brooklyn to the basic, DNA math measurer, better leave the lion alone, do not pet him, he'll fuck-start your burp hole, jet in burgundy pleather. Woah! So you should

pump this shit like they do in the future

...where harmony and love reign, no longer do we live in a society bent on its own destruction. Children of every race, creed and religion frollick through fields of golden dandelions (li'l bitch)... that's some Camus shit!

Those who know lust, trust the flow is disgust, touch Producto back, rap rush, you'll notice the lad crush. I'm potent, intact, a black hearted and lunged up, 'tarded and touched, plus, designer of funk rust. Oh, El is back on that shit, huh? That Paincave Kid talk at the end of the painbow, the permanant stain bop, maligning my name will holy ark up your squad's face, viewers of the divine rage learn to worship the hard way, you get it? I don't fade, just float where the poem slays, at home with a roach hazed, alone or with hoes great, I called but got a tone. Better boat out the borough post-haste

Probably because the end of Run the Numbers on the album is actually the beginning of Habeas Corpses (the synth breakdown). The same thing happened with the instrumental version; Run the Numbers is only 3:10 and Habeas Corpses is split into two parts, the first of which is the breakdown.

Can Ox's The Cold Vein is one of my favourite rap record. Amazing the whole way through. Alot of my favourite records happened before I was into a band or the scene that the band was a part of. This is one of the few albums is an exception to that rule. Lots of fond memories around this one.

Listened to the record today. Now I'm feeling like punching a hole into the floor and screaming at my neighbours. And I mean that in a good way.

For about a year I've been in headphone limbo, meaning that I haven't considered my ipod to feel exciting no matter what albums I jam it with, which has lead to me not charging my pod with any new music in months. I almost thought that my relationship with music was over.

That said...

This is the first record in over a year that makes walking around with headphones exciting again.

Also, it may have one of the most depressing album covers ever made. The angel-bird thing from the cover of ISWYD, which he uses as a logo (and, according to Wikipedia, is based on a drawing artist Alexander Calder made on a wooden toy airplane for El-P as a child), is now broken and thrown away. This could be interpreted as childhood dreams being destroyed.

Only kinda related to El since I know they were friends for so long. Anybody know why Aesop Rock isn't on Def Jux anymore? Long, long time fan of El-P here and since I picked this up the day it was released I haven't been able to put together the words on how I felt for the able even after many (a fucking ton) of listens.

When I first listened to it I was kind of disappointed and thought it would kill my thoughts on a producer and, in my opinion, icon among the hip-hop community but then I gave it a few more spins and the liveliness of each track just blew my mind.

I think this is the best album he's ever done, easily, and tracks like Oh Hail No/Tougher Colder solidify El as one of the unpredictable and best artists in the music industry right now. The instrumentals are fantastic, I can't get enough of it. From start to finish this is a flawless album in my opinion.

Anyhow, I'd definitely say that this is probably one of the best albums I've heard in a really long time as far as originality, production, and just over-all fun. I'm especially psyched to hear Killer Mike's new album now because I hope it's just as fun and ground-breaking.

Can't think of another artist who's successfully produced their own album as well as another artist's and released them both so close together, not for years anyway. Shades of Year Zero/NiggyTardust!

spegettiwestern
05-11-2012, 05:02 PM
Not to take anything away from TR but I think it's even more-so impressive from El considering these tracks are all originals and Niggy Tardust (while being an amazing album) were a lot of TF tracks that were then reconstructed by Saul and co.

I hold him to such a high regard considering his entire career has been consistently innovative on top of an unparalleled amount of new material. When he wasn't creating his own solo albums he's producing albums/tracks and being featured on some really big projects (Aesop Rock, Cage, Mr. Lif, Das Racist to name a few).

Anyhow, the new Killer Mike album is extraordinary and I was really looking forward to something of this stature as I'd been a long time fan of Killer Mike and pretty much anyone associated with Goodie Mob-era southern hip-hop. Cancer For Cure is probably the greatest album from El to date, arguably better than Funcrusher from every angle. The instrumentals are often times mind-blowing and the pace of the album is incredible, compared to some of the sluggish moments in his last release (although, I always thought Habeas Corpses/Poisenville were some of the more exciting songs on ISWYD, I guess I can agree when people say it slowed down an album that was otherwise quicker and sinister). The lyrical content was right up there as usual and he's really been improving in even just the last year. I always felt that he was too underappreciated as a writer but he never disappoints (granted I'm a long-time fan and probably a huge gay fanboy). Not much else I can think to say, I just look forward to anything and everything else he does and even if, god willing, it all flops into shit, he'd remain to have one of the most creative and ground-breaking careers of all the artists out there.

Edit: Also, I just wanted to mention that I was really impressed that the Killer Mike album feeling like a bit of a departure from El-P's normal tone while still maintaining what makes his instrumentals so familiar. When I first heard the singles that were released I thought it was pretty obvious with El's involvement, however the whole album holds a great feel for Killer Mike separately from C4C's tone.

GQ has published a stellar profile (http://www.gq.com/entertainment/music/201206/dangelo-gq-june-2012-interview?printable=true) of the comeback kid D'Angelo, and posted a video of him wailing on the guitar, which can be viewed below. The best quote in the whole piece comes from ?uestlove, who states that "The one benefit of this eleven-year sabbatical was he used 10,000 Gladwellian hours to master the guitar. He can play the shit out of it, and I don't mean no Lil Wayne shit." True. If you've not spent some time with D, Erykah, and the rest of the neosoul canon, it's time to feast up.

I think if you took Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music, Cancer 4 Cure and Run The Jewels, whittled them down to 12 tracks... you could make 1 flawless record.

Not that any of those albums are individually sub par.

Very glad they decided to make this album! A lot of the beats seemed to be rehashed from Cancer for Cure, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. And for El-P, who usually releases an album once every 5 years or so, it's nice to see him come back into the forefront so quickly. They certainly make a great duo; it's lightning and thunder on a track together. El comes in with blazing speed and Mike cleans house with bombastic determination.

Also, I hope an instrumental version appears sooner or later.

Here's why: I don't download music anymore. I pretty much only listen to music via spotify at my work computer (which I can't download files onto), or at home on my stereo, which is connected to spotify via home theater magic. I could theoretically download it to my computer and sync that up to my stereo at home, but that doesn't help me at work, which is where I do most of my listening.

Boo hoo, it's 2013 and I can't even download free things anymore! Call the whaaaambulance we need more tiny violins.

This is a party album. It's a jump-around-laughing-like-an-idiot album. It's not something you should listen to on a fucking work computer.

ps. I ordered the super-deluxe pack with the weed grinder!

No need to be humourless, either. Spotify is the Costco of music. No indie artist will ever make a dime there with their fucked-up business model, so why not get fans to download music on your own site instead?

I'm not quite sure what crawled up your ass.

Nobody played a tiny violin or called the wahmbulance. I asked a question about why the album wasn't on Spotify and then, when you facepalmed, explained why I was interested. I get that you apparently have some gripe about Spotify's royalty scheme (which seems fair, except a) I'm a paid subscriber which actually pays pretty decently, especially considering I would never be buying/pirating/listening to even 5% of the music I'm listening to on it, and b) it's a free album), but, Jesus, get the fuck over yourself.

Maybe you should go back to claiming to have written Kanye songs 10 years ago on Fruity Loops and then not posting them.

I don't get how on earth Spotify would ever pay anyone "pretty decently" unless their songs got millions of plays on it. You aren't paying the artists you listen to with that subscription, you're paying the most popular 1% of artists (or rather, paying their labels/licensors). Does this address your question as to why the album isn't there? It does the artists no favours to self-license their music on Spotify.

While you've succeeded in making me sound like a douche, in actual fact I didn't claim this in the Kanye thread or anywhere else.

you're right, cool edit pro, I apologize

Agreed, except that I did better than this (or at least had the restraint to not ruin it with cringe-worthy vocal takes) in summer 2000, and MP3.com was where I uploaded it. The backing track of "Black Skinhead" (screams and all) sounds EXACTLY like what I threw together in Cool Edit Pro 2.0 on my parents' desktop running Windows 98.

I didn't write the same track but produced something VERY similar... it's a long story but since it's tangentially related to the Spotify discussion... MP3.com deleted the track when they were bought out by another company circa 2003, and I recycled part of that track into this one (http://botley.bandcamp.com/track/polyrul) a couple of years later.

I saw that when you posted it before, and listened to it then, and don't hear anything to substantiate your claim.

Listen, I've lost songs before too -- though from hard drive crashes, I didn't post my only copies to external websites -- so I get that that sucks. I just don't make subsequent claims that I previously wrote songs that sounded identical to what is now popular (and considered by some to be cutting edge) if I can't back it up. It's cheap, and that's what makes you look like a douche -- my help not required.

As for Spotify, to take this marginally back on topic, I support the right of the artists not to participate in Spotify. But the flip side is that I'm just not going to hear their stuff because of my current setup, which I'm happy with. To trot out this tired argument, I've discovered literally dozens of new artists in the last week alone that I will now be going to their shows and buying their shit. My discretionary spending on music related stuff has, to be honest, exploded post-Spotify. I would not have listened to a lot of this before. I am not claiming to be everybody, or claiming that the "new model" works, or saying anything beyond my own experience.

Yes, my hard drive containing the original track crashed as well, I never knowingly put "the only copy" anywhere — again, long story, and not in any way related to El-P. Lesson learned! Nobody wants to look like a douche, especially when you're actually right and caught out for making a douchey argument.

I don't manage El-P and there's no way to draw conclusions from correlative data; in my opinion, artists do not benefit from 'exposure' on Spotify any more than other streaming models that actually allow you to maybe collect a royalty some day. In the end they are all just methods of exploiting the on-demand appetite for music that has decimated the commodity-based model. But as a music artist I think you can still only make a buck by selling your own commodities directly.

But as a music artist I think you can still only make a buck by selling your own commodities directly.

I agree with most of what you're saying, but the on-demand system didn't decimate the model alone. its just supply and demand: even without the on-demand ability for entertainment, it is now super cheap to make content, which historically has not been the case. As a result, there's an explosion of new music out there. Even if on-demand wasn't an option, the market would be way too fragmented for much money to be made.

And I think that's the real issue: there just isn't that much money to go around, because the value of the information, the content, is so incredibly low.

People still buy commodities, and its a good way to make money. I am accumulating way too much vinyl -- I always say I'm going to just get albums I really fall in love with, but thanks to the explosion of content, there seems to be more of these than ever.

Maybe when I see El-P next, I'll pick up the album at the show. But, and all I can do is speak for me as a sample size of one, it would sure be a lot better if he was on Spotify. Even if the royalties from Spotify are so low as to be meaningless, it's still exposure for a free album, and I'm already following his twitter/facebook/whatever.

Haven't been around the forum in some time. But I am glad to see there's quite a few people around here who enjoyed Run The Jewels. It's definitely a nice time to be a fan of El-P, he's putting out an incredible amount of top-notch music one after another. This collaboration in particular I think is a way better pairing for El and Killer Mike. KM's solo album was real great, but there's a mutual respect combined with hearing the two of them top each other from verse to verse that's really impressive.

And the whole album was just real fun. They stepped away from their normal talking points and just kind of put out a record full of fun shit-talking. I absolutely loved it.

El-P and Killer Mike, who together are Run The Jewels, released their excellent self-titled album earlier this year as a freebie via Brooklyn-based label Fools Gold. Now they’ve announced plans to re-issue the an expanded version of the album – featuring new songs and a remix by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek.
The re-release will coincide with a short hop around Europe, with the duo covering Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK and France.

Tour dates:
20 Nov – Vega, Copenhagen, Denmark
23 Nov – Rote Fabrik, Zurich, Switzerland
25 Nov – Cannabis Cup, Amsterdam, Netherlands
26 Nov – Brixton Electric, London, UK
27 Nov – Pan Pipper, Paris, France

BTW Co-Producer of Cancer 4 Cure, Little Shalimar is going to release a new album called emergency love and its sounds great so far check it out here (https://soundcloud.com/little-shalimar).

Moving this here from the NIN-spotting:

I absolutley love his mid-2000s work. Cutting edge, ground breaking and progressive stuff. You probably already have, but if you havent, check out Fantastic Damage and his album he produced for Aesop Rock, Bazooka Tooth. IMO, 2 of the best hip-hop albums of all time. His disc he did with Cannibal Ox is great too (cant remember the name of that one), as is 2 of his instrumental discs, Collecting the Kid, and the excellent High Water (that he did with The Blue Series Contimuum)

Bazooka Tooth wasn't produced by EL (with the exception of "We're Famous", which is one of the weakest songs on there imo). But it came out on his Def Jux imprint and therefore he surely had some input there.

Talking essential EL-P records, I'd suggest the following (in chronological order):

Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus (1997): This is a rough edged underground rap album. His rapping and production aren't as sharp as today, but you'll catch glimpses of what was about to come later in his career. In "Last Good Sleep" this album featured the first song he touched personal topics upon with a story about how his mother got abused by his stepfather... a topic that appeared on later albums/songs as well.

Company Flow - End To End Burners (1998): This is just a 12"/single featuring two new Co-Flow songs, but since they're exclusive to this release and also fuckin' rock I included them here. Both produced by EL as well and also the title track got an excellent video.

Company Flow - Little Johny From The Hospitul (1999): An all instrumental effort recorded just after Bigg Jus left Co-Flow. They produced this partially to fulfill their record contract with Rawkus. This is also the album that got Trent hooked on EL's production.

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein (2001): The classic album EL produced in its entirety for rappers Vast Aire and Vordul Mega. This album is about life in the rotten apple from the perspective of two individuals witnessing crimes and murder, dealing with depression, all the while growing up on hiphop culture. This is a straight out masterpiece. Unfortunately those guys lost their shit in the years to follow and never recorded a proper follow up. They also fell out with EL...

EL-P - Fantastic Damage (2002): The solo debut album. Infamous for its length, because EL crammed anything in there he could find. With almost 80 minutes of playtime, it caused him to never record an album over 60 minutes in length again. Featuring songs that initially were meant to be put on "Pain Cave", the never realised last album by Company Flow.

Central Services - Forever Frozen In Television Time (2005): This EP is the only release by the duo consisting of EL and Camu Tao. EL's behind the boards here, only jumping behind the mic occasionally, while Camu is singing. Featuring a cover version of a Huey Lewis song as well as anthems about oxycontin and working for the government, this is a really druggy affair. Offered as a free download shortly after Camu passed away.

EL-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead (2007): The follow up. Now clocking in under 60 minutes. When news about features by Cat Power, The Mars Volta, Daryl Palumbo and Trent Reznor leaked, everybody got afraid, that this would turn into EL's "alternative" record. Fortunately he used those guest spots in the way the South Park guys do (Clooney voicing a dog, anyone?). In my opinion his best work to date.

EL-P - Wereallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixxx2 (2008): Tour only disc featuring exclusive instrumentals, left overs from the ISWYD sessions and remixes (The Mars Volta, Jay-Z, The Doors). It's also notable for a song that appears to be an alternative take on the "Only" remix EL did for NIN. Also there's a song on there called "Fuck The Law" featuring the same lyrics EL would later put on C4C.

EL-P - Wereallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixxx3 (2011): Another disc full of essential instrumentals. EL offered a free download of song "Lab Rat Escapes On Hoovercraft Just To Crash Outside Of Doors", which you might want to hunt down and put into your itunes folder of this album, because it's a great instrumental.

EL-P - Cancer 4 Cure (2012): The third album we all know and love. I feel, he loosened up a bit on this one, which shows in the concepts for some of the songs. It features songs recorded between 2007 and 2012.

Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music (2012): Enough said about this one in this thread already.

EL-P & Killer Mike - Run The Jewels (2013): Also enough said about this one.

Honorable mentions: EL-P - Wereallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx (2003): Notable for including a few Company Flow songs and demos from the never released "Pain Cave" album. EL-P - Collecting The Kid (2004): This one compiles instrumentals, random songs and soundtrack work EL did in the years prior. EL-P - High Water (2005): EL producing jazz musicians. Worth checking out for "Sunrise Over Bklyn" alone. Mr. Lif - I Phantom (2003): A fantastic concept album by this boston rapper where EL produced half of the tracks on. Mr. Lif - Mo' Mega (2006): The follow up by Lif, where EL produced most of the songs on. Cage - Hell's Winter (2005): Cage's debut for EL's Def Jux imprint. For the most part produced by EL & Camu Tao, while also featuring production by RJD2 and Dj Shadow a.o.

Also, if you're a nerdy fan like me and can't get enough of EL's production, there are a lot of b-sides and productions outside of his own releases, that you might want to hunt down:

A Message From Run The Jewels

To Our Jewel Runners Worldwide,

Last year we gave you Run The Jewels and in exchange we asked for an email. Since then we haven’t been in touch unless you’ve seen us at a show, talked to us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, bumped in to us at a bar, sold us weed, etc etc. Truth be told our intention was to mercilessly sell your email information to literally anyone who would pay in a desperate attempt to raise enough money to buy 2 giant 36", 14 K yellow-gold dookie rope chains or 4 bit coins. While we still yearn for those, we (regrettably) forgot to do the whole “betraying your privacy” thing, mostly due to the amount of marijuana we smoke on a daily basis. In fact, we completely forgot we even had these emails until yesterday. Shit happens.

We are writing you today to thank you, and to tell you that you are the first people in the world we are inviting to check out our exclusive preorder packages for the new record we made called “RUN THE JEWELS 2” (or #RTJ2). First to the thank you part:

HOLY FUCKING SHIT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING RUN THE JEWELS A SUCCESS. We are humbled that you have supported us and our music. All of you. Those who bought it, those who got it for free and came to a show… all of you. Truly. You turned a free record with little to no promotion in to something bigger than we ever expected. The shows have been amazing, the interactions with all of our supporters just as great. It's because of this that we can honestly promise to keep giving you that raw shit as long as we can. Thank you thank you thank you.

As you may know, #RTJ2 is dropping October 27th. We are very excited about this. Once again we are giving you this record FOR FREE. We want anyone who wants it to have it, especially those who don’t feel like they can afford to spend cash on that type of thing or maybe even aren’t sure we are worthy of it. Take it, test it out. Enjoy.

For those of you who DO want to pay for it (http://www.runthejewels.net/) we have many glorious options for you which we will list below. Many of these are limited and you are getting the first crack at copping them. We think you’ll be as pleased with what we are presenting as we are.

Again, thank you for everything. We can’t wait to give you this music and play it for you at our shows. (http://therealrunthejewels.tumblr.com/tour)

No bullshit,

There's already a Kickstarter campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1957344648/meow-the-jewels) to raise the $40,000 for Meow The Jewels. El-P said if it gets the money he'll donate it to charity AND remake the album with cat noises.

If I had $1000 lying around, I'd get my cat (https://www.twitter.com/PestoTheCat) in on the action. Who else in the world would be able to say their CAT was a guest artist on an El-P production.

"Oh My Darling Don't Cry" is completely and utterly ridiculous. Easily one of my favourite things I've heard this year. If RTJ2 is like this front to back I don't think I could handle it.

Any idea if there will be instrumentals this time around without buying the vinyls?

No idea, I thought they offered instrumentals on their WAV download page but it seems like this isn't the case. Maybe they will be eventually released in a European CD just like RTJ1's.

I may be biased, but RTJ2 is one of the best albums I've heard all year.

MEOW THE JEWELS UPDATE

We just had the Meow The Jewels Lottery Draft where our producer friends (Just Blaze, Geoff Barrow, Prince Paul, Dan The Automater, Nick Hook, Zola Jesus, Skywalker, Gaslamp Killer, El-P, Massive Attack and more) battled it out for what song they had to remix with cat sounds. More updates coming really soon.

didn't see a Run the Jewels thread (sorry if I missed it) but saw that fiasco at SXSW where some guy ran the stage and tried to punch El-P? The news articles covering this are running with vague details. I was curious what happened.

The only video I saw has most of the fight happening off stage. Running on the stage in a hostile way at all is no longer anywhere near ok after Dimebag. These festival stages need to up their security...

the CoS article seems to imply the guy was trying to punch Killer Mike? It seems pretty clear that Killer Mike is trying to push the guy back while he goes after El-P? Maybe CoS doesn't know which one's El-P

Hey guys, I was there, watching in the food truck food court behind the Spotify House, which was far less exclusive and had a perfect view of the stage, haha.

So, the guy hopped on stage, went after El-P first, grabbing his shirt, and then Killer Mike tried to pull him off and then he came at Mike trying to take swing at him. Mike shoved him off stage, and according to a few people around me who jump up on the fence to look over, Mike's crew stomped the dude, whith one guy commenting, "holy shit, that's guy's head is leaking!"

The rapping only stopped for about 90 seconds and music for like 30 seconds before they recovered. Killer Mike was understandably furious and was yelling out, "your mama should be ashamed of you! fuck boy! fuck boy!" and then got the whole audience to chant "fuck boy" before labeling him a "bitch nigga." Then they continued the show. El-P apologized for brief interruption saying, "I have no idea what the hell that was," and Mike responded, "yeah we do, it was a fuck boy." El-P laughed and said "Oh, I guess we do." And then they launched into "Close Your Eyes" and it was awesome.

Mike at some point after that took some pills, joked that he wanted something stronger than ibuprofen and told everyone to pray that his shoulder didn't fuck up again and force him to pack it in early.

It was a weird incident, but the show was fantastic. And yes, with only a easily scalable fence, security wasn't exactly top notch.

Finally music outlets are reporting on it. I know looking at the comments section of any website is toxic, but geez, the comments on this story are just mean: http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2015/03/run_the_jewels_12.html

I may be entirely alone in this sentiment but I've come to realize I find the Run the Jewels duo extremely annoying and the music doesn't really back anything up for me either. I was heavily bored with their first two records and it's a shame cause I adore El-P's solo work.

I think it's Mike. I wasn't a fan of his El-P produced album that came out in 2012 and I only really enjoy his guest verses. Mike has good flow and the production is always solid for Run the Jewels material but nothing really clicks with me and I find myself forcing myself to listen to this because it's something I SHOULD be into. Maybe it's their demeanor? They seem like they'd be cool guys to be around, but there's something that just doesn't connect with me as a fan. Plus I find the "fuck boy" thing super played out and lame coming from dudes in their 40's.

Plus I find the "fuck boy" thing super played out and lame coming from dudes in their 40's.

I don't know... when people screw with your performance on any level in any way it might not elicit the most carefully thought-out response. Your adrenaline is already going because you're performing, then someone attacks you? At that point, delivering any kind of coherent message conveying how pissed you are is a pretty tall order.

And maybe it's just me but I've never heard the expression "fuck boy" before this incident. What's the nature of the insult?

Oh it's a common thing that they say either in the shows or in their lyrics. I could be incorrect on it being in one of their songs, but I KNOW that it's a common insult they like to throw at people. It's usually in like "herr herr you're a fuck boy" kind of things, but the two of them usually come across childish when they say it. You're right, when something like a fan jumping on stage and possibly making Mike act on instinct and having him hurt his shoulder occurs, it's natural to just jump into your first emotion...but then he keeps repeating it over and over and over and over again to the point to where the crowd jumps in. I'm not defending the guy that jumped on stage, he had no business being there...but it's just that the phrase always seems to rub me the wrong way.

It's been a while since I listened to Cancer for Cure (I had probably listened to it like 100 times when it first came out), so I listened to the instrumental edition yesterday. It still blows my fucking mind. Afterwards, I re-listened to the instrumentals for R.A.P. Music and RTJ1+2 and, strangely, they didn't hit me as hard this time; maybe because I've spun them more recently and they're fresher in my mind, but, still, C4C has a level of musical depth and complexity that El-P hasn't reached since. I mean, in his amazing and hilarious RBMA interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQkoC5jbmOE), he said that he worked on the record for five years ("Drones Over BKLYN" has been on Adult Swim's YouTube since 2009). Of course, the stuff he makes with Killer Mike are far more fun, simple, straightforward and banging, and he stated in the RTJ AMA that he's so happy with Run the Jewels creatively that he doesn't feel the need to make another solo album. And, if this is the case (further illustrated by the broken bird logo on the cover), C4C was a hell of a way for El's solo career to go. And I can't fucking wait for RTJ3 and whatever else these crazies have in store. :)

There's some good tracks on there (Thursday In The Danger Room damn near made me cry, especially after the year I've had), but it didn't kick my ass like the first two albums did. I think there's too many guests this time around, and they don't feel like they blend into the material as well as previous guests have. I also think the production wasn't as good as the first album. Still a nice Christmas present, but it probably won't get as much play as the previous albums.

With this album I've noticed I'm not really into RTJ. I've been a fan of EL-P's for years and I still think he's one of the best hiphop producers out there, but those RTJ endeavors seem a bit too one-note for my taste. Either they're talking a lot of bullshit in their raps delivering pun after pun, or they're "saying something", which of course is not a problem, but with them it always tends to tap into the melodramatic realms. No room for subtlety here.
Also, I can't decide if the holocaust-line by Mike (on 2100 I believe) is downplaying, exaggerating or just plain stupid. It's probably all three.

I can actually see him doing something like that since he hasn't done another, were going to burn in hell megamix. Something akin to that has long been over due.
I really hope that El-P does another megamix, a synth album, or another Solo album.
Either way he is super busy with the Zach De la Rocha album that comes out next year and touring with Run the Jewels.
As a side note, I hope he does another collaboration of some kind with Aesop Rock. From what I remember, ever since Camu Tao died he hasn't done anything with him, I could be wrong though.

You're right. Him and Aesop don't seem to be on speaking terms since Camu died and El dissolved Def Jux. Something must have happened there.
Aesop assembled his own "RTJ" tho... together with Rob Sonic, who's also a former Def Jukie. They call themselves Hail Mary Mallon and released two albums already, which are fun.

Legend Has It + Call Ticketron is the one-two punch that wrecked me. Terrific stuff. And Mike has a verse on Oh Mama that is one of the most hilarious things I've heard all year. Play this shit loud, on a nice soundsystem.

I was listening to the SXSW 2015 concert on Spotify (with that incident edited out) and El-P at one point described himself as a "bad stand-up comedian posing as a rapper". I, too, kind of miss the serious, depressed El-P that made the masterpieces ISWYD and C4C. And I get that some people have gotten tired of their punny, over-the-top, intentionally ridiculous schtick, but I'm glad that RTJ are having so much fun, and that they've become commercially successful because of that. RTJ is big, stupid fun, and even their serious tracks have a cartoony feel to them. And I love that they keep doing their own thing, without sticking to whatever is the new musical trend. Even the Trina song, which does have some trap-ish hi-hats, could not possibly be described as a "trap song". I cannot wait for RTJ4. And RTJ5... and 6...

Oh, and 2100 is the sequel to Year Zero. There.

the beats for the first Can Ox record are my favorite thing El-P has ever done. And I took my IG name (bronxtalebliss) from this song. Shame the 3 of them could never get their shit together & recapture the magic. Cold Vein is an all-time classic underground hip hop record & one of the crown jewels for El-P. Perfect album to listen to while walking & taking the train around a cold NYC winter.

The Trina hook is one of the most baffling features on the album. You'd think a rapper who's been around as long as she has would think of something a bit more clever. But, no, she merely repeats "I'm the shit, I'm the shit, bitch". Lazy. Gangsta Boo had proven she was the shit on RTJ2. I always prefer the singer/instrumentalist guests on RTJ records. Kamasi, Boots and Tunde were brilliant. And if you listen closely to some of the tracks, you will find some ultra-deep melodic basslines. I'm picking up chord progressions I didn't notice the first time around. The musicality is still there, it's just a better kept secret under the thundering beats and the comically devious lyrics. It's definitely a grower, neorev .

And, yes, I love The Cold Vein. Iron Galaxy was one of the best tracks on Tony Hawk's Underground.

I don't know. I love EL-P's work, his production especially, but RTJ somehow doesn't do anything for me. Compared to EL's solo stuff it all seems a bit too melodramatic and simple and it also doesn't help that I can't really get into Killer Mike and the way they carry their "wokeness" around with them.

I get though why they pursuing this so strongly. They both seem happier then ever before as artists and they also enjoy a popularity they never before had in their careers. So as a fan I'm not mad at them. I'm just hoping for another EL-P solo record sometime in the distant future.

Hehe, wow! The ranking seems to be all over the place for the four RTJ records.

For me it's:

RJT3/4 (can't decide yet)
RTJ
RTJ2

I always believe that 3 has more "hits", but I'm totally digging the beats on number 4 right now. It's a way meaner and unpleasent record and very much needed right now. During my first listen I was mad that Zack would just be a sample but his verses are great. Can't say that about J-Ho though who is barely noticeable apart from some wailing. The song he's on is amazing though!

A truly powerful and zeitgeist-y record! Had no idea that they would knock it out of the park like this.

Yesterday YouTube suggested me their performance at ACL's Moody Theater, and that's where I found out about this song. I looked it up on YouTube to find the studio version, and found this gem of a music video, 4 years later! Possibly one of the best videos I've seen. I didn't see the ACL show here, so let me post it. One of the best live shows on YouTube I've seen, the crowd energy is insane! (Edit: I saw that @BRoswell (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=219) posted the concert a couple pages back, but I'll repost it here because it is simply one of the most brilliant concerts I've seen...after listening to this concert with headphones on I now made it a bucket list item to see RTJ live next year, if the RATM tour happens. Funny how it works...RATM is one of the few bands in my bucket list I have not seen yet, but for me, now, in 2020, it is much more vital to see RTJ than RATM).
