This week's episode (the Christmas special) was actually a really, really good episode!
In fact, it's one of the best episodes the have released in the last 10 seasons or so.

One of the things that kind of bothered me was how This show has been on for, what 22 or 23 seasons now, and the characters NEVER age, ever! That kind of bothers me, I think if they characters aged, they would have more to play with regarding writing into the story to not keep it stale (I mean how many "Krusty the clown is on the verge of losing his career" episodes do we need?).

I always hoped for an episode of "simpsons when they were older" and when I heard this was going to be that episode, I will admit, I was estatic to watch it, and That's normally a very dangerous thing doing (Geeting yourself extremely hyped up for something) as 80% of the time it leads to a huge let down...

But not this time! This episode is based 30 years in the future when all the simpsons children are grown and have children of their own, and it was great!

I hope they do more episodes in this style, at least closer to the end of their run, whenever that will be (I think they signed on for 5 more seasons?) I think they should do a whole "Future Simpsons" season. There would be so much potential with it.

They have done a couple of future episodes before (e.g. Lisa's Wedding) but I like your idea. Haven't watched yesterday's episode yet - looking forward to it now!

Even though The Simpsons doesn't hold the interest it used to for me, to be honest it doesn't take much for me to watch a sitcom (I have a surprising amount of spare time on my hands when I've got important chores/work piling up) so I do still watch this every week without fail. It's basically something to stare at while I eat lunch on Mondays, so the odd times it is entertaining are nice.

Yeah, I was never crazy about the future episodes. In fact, they were some of the weakest of the bunch (but then, I stopped watching around season ten, so...I have no idea about now).

And I believe they're only signed on for two more seasons, ManBurning. Part of me is kind of glad they're pulling the plug, since it's been painful to watch my favorite show of all time going straight down the tubes, and part of me is kind of bummed that there won't be any more new episodes, even if I don't watch it now. It'll be weird not to have the show around (besides reruns, I mean).

I actually just dusted off season five the other day and watched a few episodes with commentary. It made me want to watch some without the commentary track on, because even though I couldn't hear most of the dialogue, I was reminded of how God damn hilarious this show was. I mean, I've seen these episodes so many times I can't even count, I know the first ten seasons front to back, it's still my favorite show- but I haven't really sat down and watched an episode in a long, long time.

Specifically, I was reminded of how funny the episode was when they got a trampoline. Specifically Homer bouncing up and down outside Bart's window. "Hi son! Hi son! Hi son!" And then later on, Nelson and the gang outside going, "Hey, they got rid of the trampoline. Let's jump on their car instead!" And then you could hear the roof crumple with every jump. Freaking AWESOME.

Funny thing is, I actually stopped watching this show probably in 2002 or 2003, because it was getting SO BAD. And I literally skipped near 7-8 seasons til I started watching again in 2010. the reason i started watching again was my Girlfriend is an absolute simpsons fanetic and has watched every single episode ever, never misses one. We started dating in Feb. 2010, so I got aquainted with the simpsons again. They are definatly very hit-or-miss these days, more so miss, but never the less, it's something to watch and kill a half an hour. It's the only TV show I can stand these days. I don't see all the hype about those other shows. Futurama, American Dad and Family Guy... maybe I am just too old school and stuck in the 90s, lol.

That was from their Twilight Zone episode where Homer goes to great lengths to suck up to Mr. Burns during a company-sponsored family picnic, tries to engage the family in prayer before dinner, throws out their TV in a bid to pay for counseling by Dr. Marvin Monroe (in a rather memorable sequence), and is sober throughout the entire episode.

The Simpsons is like the television equivalent of The Beatles. Imagine if The Beatles were still around 25 years after they started. Would their legend be a big?
Sure they would write a good song now and again, but mostly it would be diminishing returns, people comparing the new stuff to the old stuff.
And the legend would be nowhere near as big.

Simpsons had a glorious 5 or 6 years in the 1990's. Something went wrong in the late 1990's. It went really bad for a few years and it was a really sorry sight. Like watching a former great athlete with cancer still trying to compete. Then sometime in the last decade it began to get better. You did not feel sense of sorrow and dread everytime you watched it.
Now the Simpsons is like a band that has reformed not as vital or as good as it was in the past but your glad its there anyway, and suprises you now and again.
I dont think it needs any more seasons. It should have ended about 10 years ago. Have loved a lot thats come out in recent years but. I think its important its remembered in a great way!!

Eh, it has it's ups and downs. You get some shit episodes, you get some decent ones. I can't imagine sunday night dinner hour without a new episode of the Simpsons. It's become somewhat of a tradition in our household.

Funny thing is, I only started to rewatch the show in 2010 again. I stopped around 2002-2003 because I was going though a "TV is shit" phase. I'm still in that phase, LOL. We refuse to have cable in our house. Part of it may be because it is familuar territory and I have been out of the "TV loop" for damn near a decade that the Simpsons is a safe haven for me, I know it well and I trust it. I don't have time to invest in every other "amazing" tv show under the sun these days. I go to work and come home and barely have enough time to make dinner let alone sit in front of a TV screen for a few hours a day. To me, my poison is the Internet, This thing just grabs ahold of my life and sucks it dry. But I always said, If ya have the 'net, you don't need TV. Plus the 'net is so much better than TV.

Sorry, for going off on that tangent, lol... to get back on topic...
After meeting my girlfriend in 2010, I started watching again because she is the biggest Simpsons fanetic I have ever met, totally obsessed. So I got back into the show. While they are nowhere near as good as they used to be, they're still fun.

To add to the above: Yeah, it's a much much simplier process of uploading a video.

I (used to) do video game reviews on youtube, and I have all the equipment readily available to do a direct picture perfect capture of what is being shown on the TV, but it's a long, drawn out and painful process involved. Well, the way I did it anyway with games, maybe there isa simplier way of doing it with capturing an internet feed, but for the purpose of the conversation I would like to discuss the process I have done in the past.

-Set up DVD recorder
-pop in blank DVD
-play your game, press record
- when finished, wait for the DVD to render into a DVD playback (done directly in the DVD recorder. takes up to 10-15 minutes)
-take your newly rendered DVD to the computer and RIP the files (takes 2-6 hours depending how long it is and how fast your machine is)
-Once the files have been ripped to the net you then have to edit them (if you are removing content such as commercials from a TV show)
-Wait for the edited version to render (another 45 minutes to an hour).
-FINALLY upload to youtube (once again, depending on your connection speed, the size of the video etc 1-3 hours, maybe longer)

So, in total, this process can take a whole day.

Point and shoot a camcorder at a TV screen and upload the video, do a little editing, upload... maybe 1-3 hours total work.
Yes, it's the lazy way out, but if you just don't feel like investing the time into making someting perfect, it's an easy way out.

As time went on, and I decided it was too much work to deal with the professional looking recorded game screen captures, I moved onto my "lazy" alternative of set up a camcorder at a screen and point and shoot.

Then I realized I was somewhat of a perfectionist and the camcorder shots didn't do the videos as much justice as I would have wanted so my laziness became my downfall of my "video game" channel. Thus, I do not review games anymore for the sheer fact that I became lazy with my screen recording proceedure.

So, it's a price you pay for perfection.

Oh yeah, since nobody but me on here talks about current episodes, I just want to throw out there that (in my opinion of course), last week's episode was amazing! It was the most fun I had with a new simpsons episode this season yet, and the best since last year's Chrismas special.

It was the one where the hipster family moved next to the Simpsons from Portland. I think I enjoyed this episode so much because I live on the west coast (close to Portland and Seattle) and I got all the jokes and refrences they were trying to pull off and it was just that much more hilarious to actually releate to some of the jokes for once. Especially when the cloudy/rainy weather rolled in as well and Marge was like "they even brought this awful rainy weather" with them, hahahahah!

Tonight's episode has alot to followup on, but I'm not holding my breath for anything better than last weeks. I know the Simpsons formula now, for every shitty 5-10 episodes you get a really great one. So for every 22-23 episode, there might be 3-4 good episodes.

I'm also aware that current episodes aren't really being discussed in this thread, but just hearing about Richard Dawkins appearing on The Simpsons - Black-Eyed, Please sparked my curiosity. And even though his role was incredibly short, it really was something to see Ned Flanders in Hell. That is, aside from the time they had a Ned Flanders devil in Treehouse of Horror IV. I'll also have to admit that even if I haven't been watching The Simpsons consistently in quite a very long time, the first 5 to 10 years of episodes will always have a special place in my heart. I should make a mental note to eventually get those seasons on DVD.

You know, I love this show as much as anyone, but I would love to see what they could do if it was their last season. I imagine the writing would take a bit of a turn, and they would be pumping out some quality episodes that tugged on the heart strings a bit. Although, at this rate, it'll be another 10 years or so before that happens....

That Carl Carlson episode from last weekend was one of the better episodes of this last season, and that's quite sad, as Season 24 was probably the least memorable season of all, the episodes were really awful! I liked the joke at the end of the 2nd "finale" episode, when Homer and Marge were celebrating their 10th anniversary and they said "here's to the next one at 25 years" and Bart chipped in "Nothing needs to last that long" IE: joking towards the fact that the Simpsons will be on their 25th anniversary next season, lol.

It probably is time to throw in the towel soon, but aren't they renewed until until season 30 or something? I heard they had 5 more seasons left, but that might have been a year or two ago I heard that.

Personally, I think it would be better if for the last couple seasons, they skip the random 1 off episodes that don't have anything to do with each other, and they start like a "continuation" serious that goes from one episode to the next, like most hit TV series fo these days, so it keeps you wondering what's going to happen next and it makes you tune in each week. I think that's the best way to boost this show's ratings. Also, maybe make them grow older as well finally. That one Christmas episode where they went into the future to see how the family had turned out, was also one of the better episodes in the last few seasons, because it was new and refreshing to see a new spin on the family. They should let them age now, and we can watch them grow up like we always wanted too.

Even when an episode isn't very funny it's almost always fun to watch - which I guess is a perk of having some of the greatest characters on television.

Anyway, I've caught some good, new episodes (I liked the Simpsons lego episode more than I liked The Lego Movie) but the one that stands out the most is what I think is the most recent Xmas special. This is one of the best parts of a great episode:

First, dude, chill. No reason to get bent out of shape over a TV show.

Secondly, I know I saw an episode a few years back for the first time in a long time and it was just as awful as I remembered it being. I watched a little bit of the Lego episode and thought it was pretty terrible, too. I've probably seen bits and pieces here and there as well, though I don't remember all that well. I haven't seen anything even remotely good enough to spark my interest again. Maybe I stumbled on some duds in an otherwise ok series? I've heard it's gotten decent- not good, but decent. Which, again, is not enough to get me interested in watching but maybe I'll give it another shot sometime. Nonetheless, my dig was more at Groening for not even seeming to realize that there was ANY change in quality EVER on the show. I've heard him in interviews blame people not liking episodes past season 8 or so because they're "clouded by nostalgia." Which is annoying because, no, I think it's hard to deny if something makes you laugh. It's not nostalgia it just wasn't as good anymore. Maybe it is now, I don't know, but it certainly hit a rough patch for quite a long time at the very least. I'm sure he's too close to it to see it, I guess, but it's still annoying to hear people associated with the show blame everything but the writing for people being turned off to it.

Something about Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin fighting makes sense... probably just because it reminds me of Homer fighting George Bush (and because I secretly resent the character of Peter Griffin for being Homer part 2). But that's OK! I'm looking forward to the episode.

Well, ive been forcing my self to contend with the episodes in the later part of the series and its.... Just awful. At best, the show is inconsistent after season 10. At that point. Its almost as though the show doesnt understand what a joke IS. It falls flat on ounchlines that just dont make sense, awkwardly attempts to be relevant by ramping up conservative political commentary, also ramps up product placement, ajd even its self depreciating jokes about how far the show have fallen are just sad because the series started making them 16 seasons ago. Seriously.

*Sirens!*

Disagree! I love the show from about season 1 to season 14. After 14 it starts the slow decline in quality. 15 had some funny moments (like the incredibly good Christmas episode with the Astrolabe) but was inconsistent. It steadily gets worse and when it hit season 19 and 20 it was just very average and mostly streamlined. Season 21 onwards I find it barely watchable and a shadow of its former self. However, I still look forward to the annual Treehouse of Horror episodes.

For the record, some of my absolute favorite Simpsons episodes take place in seasons 10, 11 and 12...so yeah. I bid you farewell.

"Same me Jebus" and Homer licking toads are the only things i like from that episode, good thing about the Simpsons are that even the worst episodes have 1 or 2 good jokes, but i miss the episodes with 20 good jokes and a great plot (plus a classic moment..), season 11 is still watchable but then the show became unbearable...

I really enjoyed the Simpsons and Family Guy cross over episode that came out today. I thought it was really fresh and new and I thought it was really well executed.
It's one of the better Simpsons episodes I have seen in a looong time. They should do a whole season like this, I thought it worked out well.

As for the actual Simpsons Season 26 Season Premiere, wish I could say the same... God damn, as that ever awful!! Way to start a season off guys. This was supposed to be one of the more anticipated ones too by "killing" off a member of Springfield, and without spoiling who it was, it had no audience impact. It's not really someone you care about or someone that shows up in each episode anyway. All the hype and it was a big letdown.

Here's hoping the Futurama and Simpsons cross-over can make up for an otherwise really weak opening season.

Yeah, it was not a great premiere, but as a Jew I really did like the Jewish Heaven bits a lot. Mostly beause I get really fucking tired of explaining Jewish Heaven to people at work so now I can just tell them to watch this episode. Also, I am pretty sure both of my parents last words will be 'Eh.'

I liked the "crossover episode" but it obviously felt more like a Family Guy show than a Simpsons one, loved the "Car wash scene" and found the Peter vs Homer fight extremely disturbing (not even funny or cool, just f'n weird...)
In the end the crossover was a good idea but nothing from another world and could have been so much better (considering all the characters they can use...)

That Family Guy/Simpsons cross-over was fucking atrocious. It felt unnecessary and disrespectful to drag the Simpsons' characters through Seth Macfarlane's middle school level of humor. Having Stewie do that rape joke with Bart in the room was so unbelievably out of character. And why the hell was Marge turned into such a flippant bitch?

I don't like Family Guy to start with so maybe I'm biased, but seeing Seth Macfarlane strip The Simpsons of it's usual underlying innocence and pump them full of offensive juvenile humor was bullshit. At least when The Simpsons does something off-color there is still a light heartedness to it.

Yeah I am with you man. I thought they did a good job blending the two cartoons together animation wise but the story was just dismal and for the most part not funny. I wasn't expecting some epic mash up story or anything like that but honestly they could have came up with a better more enjoyable story. The funniest scene to me was the flashback they had when Homer and Peter were both on a plane playing on the fact they carry other shows that have been near their time slots in this case The Cleveland Show (shot down) and Bob's Burgers. Hope they never do that again to be honest.

I would say that with the quality of both shows being what they are these days, it was a pretty entertaining episode. I really enjoyed seeing the Family Guy cast interact with The Simpsons. Lots of meta jokes, and a crazy fight at the end that....lets be honest, did anyone think that it would not be that long and a little weird to watch?

One thing that came off as not right to me was some of the Family Guy humor in a Simpsons environment. (rape joke mostly)

I liked the fact that before that flashback they made reference to Family Guy's reliance on said flashbacks to fill space and produce jokes and how they don't and hopefully never will have to do that in The Simpsons.

Homer : "..cause Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin are a great team!"
Peter : "A greater team than..."
Homer : "Thaaaan...?"
Peter : "Ehhh keep going! Thaaan something else..."
Homer : "Something else? IIIIiiii don't know what this is."
Peter : *sigh* "Oh ok I'll do it..."

BTW... diehard Simpsons fan, not at all a Family guy fan, and loved the crossover. I thought they balanced the humor styles well.

There isn't a Simpsons fan alive that will tell you that its best years were post-season 11 but there were still plenty of great episodes and in the past few years with the return of a lot of its original writers/producers, it's gotten a lot more consistent.

Which they also played on. The meta bits were definitely my favourite.

As these cartoons air on a Sunday night, I download them on a Monday after work to watch with my dinner and a few glasses of wine as my brain slowly disintegrates into sleep. They serve a purpose.

I think the Simpsons were perfect for the Clinton years, just as South Park was perfect for the Bush years. The decline of the Simpsons is symbolized for me by the episode "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes", where Homer happens to land on an island, is repeatedly gassed unconscious and at the end everyone goes surfing, or something like that. That was too random and it showed that the series was running out of ideas. That was season 12, by the way. The same season had the episode where Bart, Ralph, Nelson and someone else are a boyband. That was a VERY clever episode, and quite excellent for a 20-minute comedy show. But I think it showed that they could only be great any more with a lot of effort. After that, they lost the brilliance. Whenever I watch more recent episodes I don't find much to laugh about anymore. It's like Family Guy, I could watch it all day without even smiling. Bart moves into a loft? Simpsons go to Brazil, England or some other country? Guest Star XYZ, another time travel... it has all been done before.

Nothing can remain brilliant forever. I remember one day turning on the tv to find a new Simpsons episode that I've never seen it was Moe pretending to be gay so that he could run for mayor or something.... I thought "oh wow they've really run out of ideas".

Even though I've sometimes checked The Simpsons out from time to time, I actually haven't watched it regularly in quite a while, and I'm thinking about watching it more and more whenever I can. As for the DVDs, I think I'd still mostly focus on collecting any of the seasons between the 1st to the 11th one. Those seasons are where most of my memories of The Simpsons are from. That's not to say that I stopped liking the show, but for whatever reason, I just dropped off around 2006 or 2007, as I also got caught up with South Park. I still appreciate that it's still around and like it for what it is. Catching some of the older episodes on FXX quickly reminded me why I've gotten to love The Simpsons.

Marge: Now, be good for Grampa while we're at the parent-teacher meeting. We'll bring back dinner.
Lisa: What are we gonna have?
Homer: Well that depends on what your teachers say. If both of you have been good, pizza. If you've been bad, um, let's see...poison.
Lisa: What if one of us has been good and one of us has been bad?
Bart: Poison pizza.
Homer: Oh no, I'm not making two stops.

Always loved that episode:

Yeah, I love all the characters he portrays. Mr. Burns is one of my favorite Simpsons characters.

The biggest problem the number of characters he portrays. Are they going to kill off or recast half of Springfield male population?

Hopefully, it's just a case of hardball contract renegotiation; otherwise... yeah, that's exactly what they'll have to do.
