This pairing makes a lot of sense, especially after Guadagnino had Thom Yorke do the score for his Suspiria remake. Filming wrapped in July apparently, so I'm guessing we won't be seeing/hearing this until around the same time next year.

I think it's a little early to assume the worst. The pandemic threw release schedules all out of whack, and films are still being shuffled around.

Because that's what they uploaded it as. There doesn't seem to be an official studio upload on YouTube, but some other unofficial sources at least have it in actual HD, like this one:

The soundtrack, largely period appropriate and featuring Duran Duran and Kiss, is perfectly utilized throughout. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s track for the film, “(You Made it Feel Like) Home,” punches through, in awful harmony with the haunting tragedy of the film itself. Is it a score or just a song?

Picturing similar sounds that we got in Waves (especially in Everything Burns), the twangy, almost lap steel guitar sound (obviously this might not have been the instrument used, but reminds me of that sound)

If they're to be believed someone on discord had seen the movie and they mentioned a guitar riff or Downward Spiral motif throughout (i'm assuming title track rather than the album), so yeah i dunno doesn't exactly sound like edgy country guitar but prob just a poor description.

The Leonard Cohen track they used gives this a Natural Born Killers feeling. Not sure if that's intentional, but if that's the case, it's easy to see why Trent & Atticus were picked to score it.

Soundtrack album listed here:-

https://soundtracktracklist.com/release/bones-and-all-soundtrack/

Also a Spotify playlist appeared 2 hours ago (no new material there though). The fact that Atmosphere is on there would suggest Trent's had a hand in the songs used within it (if it is indeed in the film):-

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5BhipsJnuuhyzJsACgIXig

Also - a quote from the director in an article in the Independent:-

The film also features a new score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, whom Guadagnino challenged to “find the sound of a road trip” and “the sound of the American landscape.” And it’s full of 1980s music from Joy Division, New Order and even KISS, which were chosen from a box of cassette tapes that Kajganich found from when he was a teenager. “The ones that either made me smile or cry made it in the script,” Kajganich said.

So I'm finally convinced this is a whole score and not just the one song at the end (with the obligatory 'Minute' in the title...).

I just want to point out that it seems they've just put in the (wide) release date for the movie in there as a placeholder, in lieu of an actual soundtrack announcement. These days, a lot of soundtracks do release digitally the same date as the movie release, but that is not necessarily the case, and may not be the case here until there is a real announcement.

It's likely the weird color balance of that clip. The compression of the video seems to make it worse. If you look at Trent it's more subtle, but he also has the weird red/white skin tone. Also, in terms of looking uncomfortable, I think it's pretty clear Atticus doesn't typically enjoy the promotion/press element of NIN/Scoring.

edit: I know you said you asked rhetorically but something related to the wellness of the one of the two core members of a favorite band/scoring team felt worth responding to.

Honestly, I'm not sure about this one.

Maybe I'll need some repeated listens, but I feel like they just composed a generic score while on autopilot mode.
A peaceful scene? Acoustic guitars. Horror/thriller scene? Turn up the bass and the eerie synths.
Some tracks don't even sound like a Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross composition, and I couldn't tell if it weren't for those signature synths.

This could be them getting better at what they do. Or the movie demanded the score to be very sparse and ambient-ish.
But I do miss the days when they actually composed a full 3-5 minute track for a particular scene or an emotion, use bits from that on the movie, and on the score we get to hear the whole thing.

It's like I'm listening to the FYC version of the score.
I felt something similar with Mank, but at least we got the gorgeous demos, which I prefer to the main release anyway.

Well, at least I've got the Empire Of Light soundtrack, which was exactly what I wanted.

If you are a fan of that song or Gustavo Santaolalla's score for The Last of Us...this is right up your alley.

I mentioned in the Empire of Light score thread, that that score is a great Winter album... I think this is a PERFECT Fall/Autumn album. Would love to listen to "I'm With You" while sitting in an open field before sunset with the wind, grass, and leaves blowing.

Or the movie demanded the score to be very sparse and ambient-ish.

Haven't seen it yet, but I heard there's a good amount of songs used in the film, so they obviously had to shape their work around that. mid90s was short and sparse too, but it was perfect for the film, so I can't really fault them for not creating longer pieces if it wasn't necessary.

On my second listen-through and love it so far. As has been mentioned, it does have a suspenseful and unpleasant ambience to it & so far it's a great listen. "Vinegar" is a perfect example of that mood...the looped acoustic guitar and then the dissonance & effects & synth underneath make it such a spine-tingling listen.

Can't stop listening to this, on my my fourth listen already. This is really good stuff - I like the occasional recurring theme's, the acoustic guitar is a nice addition to their ever increasing palette, as it's been absent on most of their score work up to now, and makes a nice change from the keyboards and percussion with occasional electric guitar of the last few. Just very atmospheric, and definitely makes me want to go and see the film more. 'Other paths not explored' is very nicely played - George Doering is listed as guitars, a new name to me.

I have more nuanced thoughts about the whole OST I'll have to share at some later date. For now I'll just say when I first heard TR's vocals appear on "(You Made It Feel Like) Home" it felt like he was reaching out through the void, cutting through the cold and isolation I've felt lately. Thematically we've had many "us against the world" motifs, but this one is really striking a chord (no pun intended) with me right now. Also, as I think about aging and other... endpoints, I've thought what TR might be like in the very final stages of his career. Whenever that time comes (hopefully a long way from now), I can imagine him sitting at a piano and playing this last one for us.

I am so glad I waited to see the film before listening to the soundtrack. The song at the end is amazingly perfect for this film and I will, forever, cry every time I hear this song and remember what I had just gone through in the movie. Just perfect. Taylor Russell (from Waves) is perfect. Mark Rylance (who was my LEAST favorite actor in Ready Player One) is perfect. The old songs, the score, the plot, the originality of the whole thing.... I have no words. The Downward Spiral is my favorite NIN album, and this score uses some similar textures and sounds. Bones and All, I LOVE YOU.

Well put! The comparisons to Bird Box and Before the Flood are especially on point. As a few others have pointed out, there are some TDS vibes, too – the recurring acoustic guitar motif reminds me a lot of the guitar in The Downward Spiral (the title track). Vinegar uses a sound that is strikingly similar to the sound at the beginning of Eraser. I was also reminded of the guitar strumming in Hurt at one point, too.

What do we think the odds are that we'll get this score on vinyl? If Trent & Atticus were sitting with this score for 6 months and grew a deep connection with this project, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a well designed collectable vinyl release for this score.

Who knows at this point. I'm really hoping they take some time in the next year to put together vinyl packages for Mank, Ghosts V & VI, Year Zero, Patriots Day, maybe a Ghosts I-IV reissue, etc. I get they're busy and don't need the money, but it feels like they could make a killing by just spending a week or two doing a big release of some of the vinyl we've been waiting for.

(Barring any legal reasons they can't release certain scores on vinyl, of course.)

i can't stop listening to this score. it feeling so minimalist at first made me think "oh i'm sure it fits the flick but i won't listen to it much"... and then it ended and i immediately hit play again and now i keep listening over and over and it keeps captivating me and taking me on a journey.

i guess i've gotta try and catch this movie tomorrow night.

Saw this a couple of days ago. It was the first showing at my local Cineworld in the UK, and I was the only person in there! Enjoyed the film, and the music was just so on point, really added to the tension at times. Loving this score.

Saw it earlier this evening. Definitely a fairly subdued score, but when it hit, it hit hard.

Finally saw the film tonight. The film has a different version of '(You Made It Feel Like) Home' compared to the digitally released version. The vocal track was different. My guess is the film version has Trent's demo vocals and the digital release has re-recorded vocals.

Yes, nice spot!

The FYC version has been posted:

https://www.uareleasingguilds.com/?id=bonesandallmusic

For Best Original Song, it has the film version of "(You Made It Feel Like) Home" with the different vocal take. They also have the FYC score posted. Most of the tracks are identical to/taken from the OST, but 3 of them (tracks 4, 5, 20) are alternate versions that appear in the film.

Downloading the FYC music is a little tricky. They've made it HLS streaming only. As usual, JWFan has the links (https://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/34574-2022-for-your-consideration-studio-sites-featuring-music/), but you'll need to put those URL's into an M3U8 playlist downloader (I use youtube-dl. I hear JDownloader works too). You'll end up with an MP4 file. If you change the file extension to .m4a, you'll end up with a file that's more easily playable and tagable with your media players.

Man, I'm trying not to listen to the whole soundtrack until I see the movie, but You Made It Feel Like Home has definitely been in heavy rotation and already has me feeling some feelings. I can't wait to feel it after the movie

Finally had a chance to do a comparison between the FYC and OST.

For "Vinegar", the FYC follows the same structure as the OST, but it has a number of short edits and excisions of sections that result in the shorter runtime.

For "I’m With You (You Seem Nice)", it turns out that the track on the FYC, even though labeled as a different cue, is identical to the OST track. Even the mastering is the same (you can hear the different mastering on the other FYC tracks).

For "Normal Life" the guitar is identical through 0:58. The piano accompaniment, however, is completely different on the two tracks. At 0:58, the FYC jumps to a different short segment of the OST starting at 1:26, and then transitions into a unique ending.

For "(You Made It Feel Like) Home", as mentioned before, it has a totally different vocal take. At 1:02, the FYC skips to the 2:38 mark on the OST (skipping the 2nd verse of the song). It's then identical through the end, except the FYC doesn't have the wind sound effects in the background, and it ends with a different echoey fade-out.

Is it just me, (or my computer) or is there some odd popping feedback sound through these fyc tracks? Like dust on a vinyl? Strange..

You probably don't. There's often a first cut of movies that's way longer than the finished product. In most cases, it's just a lot of extra establishing shots, scenes that haven't been trimmed down yet, scenes that don't really move the plot forward or add to the story in any meaningful way, etc. But who knows, maybe there's enough good stuff for a director's cut down the line (though it would still only probably be 20-30 minutes longer and not two hours longer).

Saw the movie the other night. Very strange. No spoilers other than to say they took a horror/thriller plot and put it into an indie drama. It made the film feel unique, but I'm not sure the blend always worked. The movie played everything so straight that the more extreme scenes felt a bit silly to me as a result.

I also couldn't figure out what it was trying to say thematically. There were times where it felt like a metaphor for addiction or for being different and finally finding someone else you can connect to, but then like 80% of the time it just felt like a movie about eating people with no metaphorical implications whatsoever.

Either way, I always love seeing a movie that feels like nothing I've ever seen before and has me still thinking about it long after the credits roll, so I definitely recommend the overall experience.

Imma need this (and Waves) on vinyl NOW before I lose it haha

Also, a 4K UHD disc release would be great. But I don't think any of Luca's films have seen 4k releases in the states.

Yes, but only the DVD received a physical FYC... The soundtrack received a streaming FYC that should be linked somewhere in the previous pages of this thread.
