Ohhh man, I've been hoping for that one for a very, very long time. If I had heard them soundchecking that from outside the Met's exit doors, I would have spent the whole show crossing my fingers that they bust it out. Could be trolling, like when they put The Perfect Drug on the full setlist for the Open Source Resistance show that was never going to be a complete show, but considering the themes of the song and that Trent just the other day opened a Discord channel on sobriety...

Hoping that you UK fans get a serious treat like that.

There appear to by lyrics on a stand to Ilan's left. Zooming in on the lyrics seems to possibly spoil something.

Last night's gig was absolutely incredible. Not just the best NIN gig I've been to, but possibly my favourite show I've been to in about 30 years of gig-going.

The setlist was the icing on the cake, but the performance, the energy (from the band and the whole venue) was something I've not seen before. The sound mix was also pristine. It'll take something to beat that. I feel very privileged to have witnessed that. Mind absolutely blown.

You have to admit, it was a shock to the system at the time. I've come around to the album version but for a while I just couldn't get into it. With that said, had it become a live staple on Tension or subsequent tours I think I'd have appreciated and gotten into it a lot sooner than I did.

Man, watching footage of Everything made me happy tear up. Not only am I thrilled it was played, but Trent's styling on the vocals gave the song a whole new life.

I was already pretty sure this was my favorite song on Hesitation Marks, but the joy this brought me pretty much confirms it. :)

I hate to be that guy who says if people don't like something it's because they didn't "get it," but that did seem to be the case to an extent with Everything. People heard the upbeat first verse without hearing the dirty chorus/post-verse/whatever-it-is juxtaposed up against it. They just--for reasons--pictured Trent on a unicorn and dismissed it as a saccharine happy song without ever giving it a second thought. And of course some people just don't like the song, and that's fine, but it felt like there was this whole other layer of dismissal that a bunch of people were too quick to jump on.

I like every song on HM, but Everything is one of the few songs from that album I'll seek out to listen to on its own (as opposed to a lot of the other tracks, which I only really listen to when I play the whole album).

I think this is accurate. I know that's how I felt initially, and no, I didn't "get it" at first. Thankfully I gave it more thought and came around on it. But a lot of people took it to a different gear and really trashed it savagely. I never felt that was fair, even in my initial indifference to the track.

To me those two were different in that they were released as stand alone tracks prior to the respective albums dropping. That gave them some room to breathe. Everything came out with the body of work and having a bunch of other songs with it made it easier to "hmmmm [>>]", at least in my case.

Deacon Blackfire

God damn I love how adventurous this lineup has proven to be with setlists. I was talking with some people back at the Met about how great Discipline is live and how happy I'd be to see that enter the fold again, so seeing that return is very exciting. Same for Down In It, which is so fun and yet intense when it gets performed. Crazy to think the last time I saw either of them was 2009, on the last tour they played them on until now. As for Everything, it may not one of my favorite songs - I always dug the choruses but I find the vocal-music combo of the main verses (the "happy" ones) a bit grating - but NIN performing anything (or Everything!) for the first time ever is awesome as hell, it looks like a blast live, and I'm happy for everyone who was hoping to see it enter the fray and for Trent seeming to find some peace with that song.

Definitely more surprises coming - with the NIN camp itself seeming to tease the potentially mindblowing debut of Sunspots, I guess there's no point in me holding back that I heard them soundchecking Deep and Love Is Not Enough through the doors of the Met waiting for show #2.

I guess there's no point in me holding back that I heard them soundchecking Deep.

Ooo, this has me very excited. I've been wanting that one back in the mix for a while. Now give me that revamped version of Ringfinger that I've been dreaming of! (Pretty please?)

As for Everything, glad to see it finally make its debut. It sounds pretty good, especially during the chorus. It'll be interesting to see if it becomes a regular fixture in future setlists or if it sinks into rarity territory.

Deep is one of my favorite NIN tracks, and hearing them play it in 2006 was a real highlight for me. If they had played that in Raleigh, I would have lost my mind! Love Is Not Enough is long overdue for a return, as it's one of those songs that just sounds so much better live.

Ok. I've heard this at plenty of gigs before. But my wife says shes never heard it. Which suggests to me that its more of a Glasgow thing than an Edinburgh thing (the old Eastside/Westside divide)

Other peoples experiences may vary, but an old DJ friend of mine from Uni used to chant it all the time, and it was particularly common at dance/rave events I went to in the late 90s/early 00s.
Its only in the last 10 years ive heard at Band events.

But i doubt its a thing outside Scotland.

Ascender
06-17-2022, 07:43 AM
Yeah, its definitely a West Coast thing.

Someone on Reddit seemed to be getting arsey with Trent for not being able to understand what was being chanted. But up on stage with IEMs in and everything else going on, I'd be amazed if he had understood it.

I didn't realise that's where it came from Alex of scotland, but makes sense. I think I first heard it at a James or maybe an Oasis gig in the early 90s.

You know what thats probably more accurate.

I was a teenager in the 90's so my earliest gig experiences are local punk gigs, so hearing "Youre a fucking Cunt" would have actually been more likely.
Early 2000s i was more likely found at student unions listening to guest DJ sets. This when I started hearing "Here we fucking go".

During the Lights In The Sky tour they would semi-regularly have The Frail lead into Closer instead of The Wretched, if I recall correctly. Hell, at the Izod Center show in East Rutherford I went to on that tour, they even had The Frail lead into Reptile. In any case, stoked that Love Is Not Enough has officially reentered the fold for the first time since that very tour, in 2008!

Wish does sort of have an abrupt ending so I see what you mean. I reckon something like Gave Up would work really well as a set closer. I can’t really think of many NIN songs that are a good closer off the top of my head. Head Like A Hole works well. Happiness In Slavey did back in ‘94 but I think that was down to the chaotic destruction noise jam at the end.

Although in the name of weirdness what about ending it with The Background World with all of its noise loop glory!

I wonder if they’d do dead souls (obvious choice, did that one time I saw them in MCR) or something else, such as one of the ones they covered at that radio show, or heck any other JD song. Not to be entitled! I’d take them reading the fucking phone book

They covered Digital in Berlin 2018, which was unexpected to me. It was like, wait, I know this song... Early JD is also quite difference in sound to Unknown Pleasures and Closer, so it took some time for me to make the connection! :-D

Really nice to see something pretty happen alongside it since he wrote the song where he intended to kill himself.

What did TR say about the rainbow? And was it before La Mer started or when it concluded?-“

It was visible during “la mer” but he commented on the rainbow in “less than” afterwards.

He didn’t say much more than “a fucking rainbow!” In the song, but in “Trent speaks” later he says something about there being two firsts at this show: one, the rainbow, two, I’ll save for you until the recording appears :)

These debuts make that back n forth from a few months back doubly hilarious.

omg I have been dying just thinking about it.

So at last they did it. Sunspots has been performed. In-fucking-sane. One of my favorites from an album that is very important to me, the first NIN album to come out after I had become a fan, my gateway album to a new era of NIN live which continues gloriously to this day. I've wanted to see that song live since I first started seeing NIN shows and now it has finally become possible. So grateful to Trent and the band for being so adventurous with setlists now. It's a shame they got Covid in the US but I'm so thankful they recovered and continued to perform as strongly as ever for you fans across the pond. They treated you all very well but I wasn't jealous until this last show, so I'm happy for you lucky folks who got to see it and disappointed for you lot that couldn't make it.

The absolutely legendary quality of Cold And Black And Infinite-onwards continues. Every song this lineup has played together since 2017 is potentially in the cards while at the same time they are going wild busting out songs they had not yet attempted. Every Day is Exactly the Same, Fashion, Heresy, The Line Begins To Blur, Echoplex, Everything, Discipline, Down In It, Love Is Not Enough, Sunspots. And they haven't even pulled out Deep yet.

I remember years ago during a Spiral chat when someone asked Trent if they would ever play Sunspots, We're In This Together, and And All That Could Have Been, and his answer was "yes, maybe, and yes." Now all three of those have been played at some point or another. So very cool. Don't know if we'll ever see WITT on setlists again but with this lineup, don't count anything out.

EDIT: Clinging to an impossible hope for an impromptu New York show as they head back home after Hellfest...

There’s reasonable captures of the Manchester 2007 performance, but I don’t know if they’re on YouTube. I’ll check my archive tomorrow.

But speaking of the OSR show, the quality of the teaser trailer for it is so much higher than the stream capture, it means that’s sitting in the NIN vaults.. unless (and I still hold out hope) someone convinced the stream to fire out at a higher quality then the circulating copy and it’ll surface one day

So. What's our official list of songs with vocals NIN *reasonably* has yet to play?

As much as we'd love to hear a Leaving Hope or a Zoo Station, I'm talking songs with vocals that also aren't super obscure (largely just songs from albums).

Looking at the NINWiki page, I think this is the full list of what I'm calling "normal songs," aka fairly standard songs that should translate perfectly well to a live environment:

Where Is Everybody?
I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally
Underneath It All
My Violent Heart
Zero-Sum
Demon Seed
The Idea Of You
Not Anymore

And then there's the extended Fragile stuff, which absolutely could make an appearance, but which I'd also put lower on the totem pole in terms of my expectations:

10 Miles High
+Appendage
The New Flesh

I think all that's left then is Purest Feeling, Memorabilia, and Zoo Station, which like I said at the start, are obscure enough that I can't imagine Trent has ever seriously considered them.

We could open a whole can of worms about instrumental stuff, as I'm sure there's a bunch we'd love to hear, especially anything from Still, but I thought it would be fun to make a focused list like the 8 above to see what's left that could most reasonably make an appearance in the future.

I've said it before, but with the growing popularity of bands performing albums in full, I think it's not impossible for us to one day see a tour of The Fragile in its entirety. They could bring Mike Garson along and play the full version (i.e. with the vinyl/cassette tracks), and we could all die happy.

I can see most of the songs NIN hasn't played yet being difficult to pull off -- I mean, the insane samples that Underneath It All is built over would mean there's not much of the song that could be done live, for instance -- but some, like Not Anymore, The Idea of You, and Where Is Everybody seem like they'd be relatively straightforward, so I'm curious as to why those have never made an appearance.

As for I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally, I feel like the strange percussion of that song meant that the time we were most likely to get it would have been during the Ghosts sections of the Lights in the Sky tour. (Getting that with standup bass instead of Ghosts Piggy from time to time would have been awesome.)

Chuck
06-22-2022, 12:32 PM
I assume that I'm Looking Forward... hasn't been played due to the emotional and personal nature of the lyrics, rather than the challenge of actually performing it. I think it might finally appear when we get an 'unplugged'/Still-style tour which I believe/hope might happen at some point in the next decade or so... Or of course if there was a full Fragile mini-tour.

Yeah, my assumption has always been that it's a personal song and not one he wants to revisit. It's also a slower song, which means you'd have to find the right spot in a set for it.

I think they should rehearse a just-NIN version of the song, with Robin and/or Ilan singing Jake's parts. It's pretty much the only thing (besides the two Ghosts albums) that NIN has released since the last tour, so it would probably help drum up some interest in the upcoming US shows to make it a little less C&B&I 2.0 if we don't get any new music by then, now that they've warmed up enough to take some new risks for the UK tour.

So Trent forgot the first part of the chorus entirely, right?

EDIT: He's talking about it on Discord now. Yup, he fucked up.

Read from bottom to top:
https://i.imgur.com/WUQVRZ3.png

He also added that they didn't rehearse it with Health at all.

That's funny! You can see Trent getting into the music and bobbing his head, and then he's like "oops ... oh yeah." Oh well!

UK tour's over brah. Couldn't possibly have been more interesting, what with three live debuts in the last two weeks.

But, I agree that a NIN-only version could be very cool. I love the song.

I think I'm bad at wording things sometimes; I meant to say that they did take some new risks after having warmed up with the first round of US shows (which themselves, after the first show or two, brought back some songs that weren't played in ages). :D

But yeah, I'm excited to see what they might do for the second round of US shows later this year.

Alessandro could do them justice. Ever heard his stuff in Sonoio? I'm guessing he might not want to do that though, based on his decision to shelve Sonoio.

Sounded like Isn't Everyone was really cool live. Wasn't always a huge fan of Health but I think that's a great song and it seems to have translated very well. Maybe one day down the road they do True with Danny Elfman too!

Feeling a little sad that there seem to be no tour dates until September. Looking at the new setlists was like one of the few bits of recurrent good news I had left at this point.

We're still owed a multi night stand in Seattle. It was on the tour that never was (COVID). I'd love to go see the Oregon shows in September but I can't travel like that due to health issues. Looks like Portland tickets are a bit tougher but Bend tickets don't look to be a problem. That's a long fucking drive from Seattle though.

Including WI, I've been to seven states, which isn't a lot compare to most. I unironically love Aragon Ballroom at this point. But like, spending all the money on travel and what not--not that I regret spending money for North Carolina or others, at all--but it would be nice to like, commute.

Sin for the first time in 9 years, first performance of AATCHB. Some of my favorite songs finally, The Becoming, The Great Destroyer, Burn and my all time favorite NIN song Happiness in Slavery, a song that had been retired and I never thought would be played again live. You people who have seen dozens of shows have WAY more money than me. :p

Also, there's no way I'd go see the same set list a bunch of times.

I AM lucky enough to have seen my other favorite band 100ish times, but that's because they're from Dallas where they played constantly before AND AFTER they got their major label deal, they never ever played the same set, and I've been on the guest list since I was 13. That all slowed down when frontman moved to LA and I moved to the Great High Plains, though.

Seeing multiple shows on THESE tours makes sense, of course, but now we're back to the money thing.

I DO love fans like you guys, though. It's fucking heartwarming, and I know it's a family reunion.
One of those recent Rush documentaries was about their relationship with their fans, and there were SO many people who had been to HUNDREDS of shows.
NIN have a similar thing: it's not as big as it was with Rush, or Phish, but it's something special for sure.

I don't make that much money, I just save it for the things I really love to do, and there's not much I love to do more than go to concerts. I'd be happy to see the exact same NIN set night after night if I could afford it, although usually I can only manage to do a couple shows of a tour. The great thing about seeing the more static setlist shows multiple times, is they usually have visuals, so that gives you a chance to see the show up close and take in the energy of the band, and then see it from further away to more fully absorb the visuals.

You... you've seen the setlists the past couple of years, right? The fact that you never know what you're going to get is what makes going to multiple shows so fun (as opposed to something like Tension where I agree going to multiple shows would have had diminishing returns). But in 2018, I went to all six shows at the Palladium in LA and managed to be surprised every single night.

What? What do you mean by that? I'm not sure what you're getting at. Are you talking about ME? I REALLY think you misunderstood the entire jist of what I was saying.
If you ARE, dude, I've seen NIN MANY times over 28 years: just not 20 or 50 or 200. I've never had enough money.
And I don't listen to jam bands. :p in fact, I feel slightly insulted by that insinuation. :p

I was at both red rocks shows last time, and I'd have been there THIS time, too, if I didn't have to spend all the money currently available to me on cool shit like this incurable autoimmune disease and chronic epilepsy.

Fuuuuck yes, i'm quite aware. That's why I loved the two nites at RR, and the live debut of TPD, and why it breaks my goddamn heart that I'm not in Denver NOW, especially after seeing the setlist for nite one. There's even a song on there I've yet to see live: aatchb. That's why I said "multiple shows, of course, make sense for THESE tours, but blah blah blah money."
All SIX shows? Holy god that would have been amazing. I've watched fillow's dope ass edits. Oh. Also, for the record, there haven't BEEN any shows in the past couple of years. Did you mean the past few MONTHS? ;) But, no, I haven't forgotten C&B&I, which kicked off FOUR FUVKING YEARS AGO, which, JESUS that's terrifying.

@otnavuskire (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=212) , To be clear, I don't make ANY money, as I am physically unable to work, now, nor do i still live in dallas, where ONE of my friends would get me a seat. I also have no car.
These days, I get to ask my mommy to pleeeeeease take us to Denver to see The Nine Inch Nails, which invariably turns into a big ass, 2-3 week thing that costs 8 or 9k, as my brother and his kids are there, now, and THEY all wanna be at the hotel, too.
And we already did that once this year. I got to see Old 97s at least, for the hundred and somethingth time. I'm afraid they're almost done.
This was NOT what I imagined 42 would be like when I was a kid, though :(
Re: static setlists, I feel you. I saw FDTS twice, wherein the set was EXACTLY the same, and I didn't even notice, honestly, being 14 and just UTTERLY obsessed.

So I sure hope y'all filmed Red Rocks One with your fancy telephones.
And was the lighting the same this time?

Edit: The only thing that scares me about these pure fan service set lists is that it makes me worried that they're preparing for the BIG wave goodbye.
