I’m usually loathe to create new topics, but lately I’ve been coming across some really interesting stuff I’d like to share but don’t necessarily know which threads people drift to. This kind of fixes that.

Most recent interesting thing I came across -

Anyone remember the opening sample from Teenage Nosferatu Pussy by Rob Zombie back in 2013? Here is what the sample was taken from, a 1950’s LSD experiment with the woman you hear:

I mean, for $50+ shipping, it's a good bargain, and I'd learn a weird Zombie Apocalypse necessary skill.

Fascination backstory: when I was in grad school, I had to irradiate samples at a military hospital school outside DC. The hallways I had to walk down had posters of advanced studies of suturing on pigs. The studies were for field casualty training purposes.

I was totally with him as to the power source thing, thinking "okay, wow, never knew that, interesting." And then he's suddenly BOILING the potatoes, which is gonna make them go bad WAY FASTER than if they're raw. And I dunno why he didn't leave the potatoes WHOLE, he never explained THAT (he DID get a reading from the whole potato). This guy was onto something interesting, but then his experiment took way too long because he had some pretty bad logic. The whole Raspberry Pi over to the Texas Instruments thing ... maybe he shoulda hooked up his potatoes to a pregnancy test. :D

Boiling the potatoes breaks down the internal structures of the potato, increasing conductivity. The potatoes are cut in half to increase efficiency since no matter what, they only last about 5 days (on the high end). Why have 1 battery when you can have 2?

I had a lot of questions, here, but then I went and researched it and found answers (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/a-potato-battery-can-light-up-a-room-for-over-a-month-180948260/).

To be clear, the potato is not, in and of itself, an energy source. What the potato does is simply help conduct electricity by acting as what’s called a salt-bridge between the the two metals, allowing the electron current to move freely across the wire to create electricity. Numerous fruits rich in electrolytes like bananas and strawberries can also form this chemical reaction. They're basically nature’s version of battery acid.

"Potatoes were chosen because of their availability all over including the tropics and sub-tropics," Rabinowitch told the Science and Development Network. They are the world's fourth most abundant food crop."

But besides being rich in phosphoric acid, spuds are ideal in that they're composed of sturdy starch tissue, can be stored for months and won’t attract insects the way, say strawberries, would. Additionally, boiling the potato breaks down the resistance inherent in the dense flesh so that electrons can flow more freely, which significantly bumps up the overall electrical output. Cutting the potato up into four or five pieces, they researchers found, made it even more efficient.

With the 97s song, at least it's FAIRLY obscure, so you don't have have to listen from it from all angles just because your name happens to be Victoria.

All this reminds me of my dear old friend Allyson, who once got so tired of me singing and playing that Elvis Costello song at her, that she grabbed the fucking wheel on the highway when I was driving, because I refused to turn the tape off. Yeah, basically everything with the highest toxicity/best defensive attributes are here due to how isolated we are as a country. The fauna had to adapt to survive due to being so remote from everything else. Because we supposedly broke off from the rest of the world millions of years ago and were all “kbye, lol” animals evolved differently here resulting in a lot of the weirdness/poisonous attributes.

I’ll just copypasta a quote:

Why are there so many dangerous animals in Australia?
"That is a really good question," Barr said. "There are a lot of theories. One hypothesis is it's an isolated place. A really harsh place to live and you better be tough. You better be harsh if you're going to survive."

Yeah, he's pretty awful. Someone used to tell me that I should try listening to people from the other side of the fence, and recommended I try reading his book.

It's terrifying that people take his shit seriously. He started ranting about lobster mating rituals at first, and eventually moved on to advocating in favour of child abuse.

He's a terrible human being.

I draw no pride from being in the same town as Peterson (let alone completing an entire four-year undergrad degree in the University that employs him). His whole vibe of "it's not that you are oppressed, you just have a bad attitude" is disingenuous at best, and gaslighting at worst. He is the most awful kind of 'public intellectual': one who takes deplorable arguments that do active harm to vulnerable people, and turns them into acceptable-sounding pabulum that plays well on television chat shows and clickbait videos. A very useful person... for anyone who wants to justify bullying, social shaming, and ultimately, laws that cause deaths. And his army of supporters are the absolute worst, so I hope they don't find this thread and decide to fuck with the community we have here.

My short version musings on God and God vs Science:

I believe in God, I cannot prove he/she/it/they exist. God may be an imaginary friend.

I speak to God like this: Please God, thank you God, right now I hate you God.

God and Science go hands in hands. Maybe God is where Science ends: what cause the Big Bang? Was it God or was it Science we don't understand yet?

But personally, my belief in God is tied to my belief of life after death. Maybe that belief has less to do with God and more to do with the absolute panic I fall into each time I consider that there is nothing after death. I just can't consider living my life like this. Way too bleak for me.

Also: imposing your beliefs to someone else is wrong. End of story.

Some good shit down here in straya! Apart from this lockdown being extended for another month!

What was it that I was watching or listening to a few weeks back? Was it something I posted in here? My memory’s getting foggy lately so I can’t pinpoint exactly who said it, but addressing your notion of a type of science or existence outside of science that we don’t understand yet: it was a comparison made to the effect of: Think of a desert with a major construction of a super highway being implemented. Next to that highway is a small colony of ants who are completely oblivious to it, despite how grand and obvious it is, because they aren’t at a state of consciousness that can grasp ideas that complex around them. So they just go about doing ant things while all of this is coexisting with them.

A similar notion is what DA says about looking down into a termite mound while they are oblivious to his presence.

A lot to unpack here.
OK. I do NOT think of "God" as a being in the sky. Rather, I believe that it is the source- the 'spark,' that animates us all. "God" is the reason that anything exists. Every living being is a part of "God," in that, each of us has a spirit soul: this includes people, cats, dogs, birds and fish.
For me, "God" IS.
I've studied the occult since I was about 12. I went from Gardnerian Wicca, to Romani sympathetic magic, to Celtic Ritual Magic, to Hinduism and the Bhagavad Gita, to Swami Prabhupada's Hare Krisna movement, to Gnosticism, to Gnostic Christianity, to Kabala, and, FINALLY arrived at a sort of Christian Mysticism. I KNOW the Bible, and the writings of the early church fathers. I ALSO love Thomas Kempis' Imitation of Christ, and Revelation of a Divine Love by Julian of Norwich and such: the works of the mystics.
I like what you said about God and Science. It's consciousness/spirit that we don't understand. I don't think god and science are at odds, at ALL. The lunatic evangelicals who don't believe in evolution think that, and the biblical literalists.
None of us has the exact answers, nor does any particular book.
BUT, I fall under the Christian umbrella because I believe that altruism and love are the best answers we have. Yeshua was a great teacher of altruism, and, furthermore, an amazing symbol of altruism and GRACE. And, I AM, now, a monotheist, and I just have a funny feeling about the tetragrammaton: YHVH: I really think it might be one of the true names of "god." About 7,000 parts of the bible where it says 'God,' the original text says YHVH.

Yes, imposing your beliefs on someone is ABSOLUTELY wrong. Another thing that religious people don't seem to understand, is that, were they born in Iran, they'd be trying to be good Muslims. Japan, and they'd be into Shinto. Were they born in India, it'd be all about being a good Hindu. Had they been born in ancient Egypt, it'd be all about Horus and Isis and Ra, unless they lived during the short period of Ahten worship. Were they ancient Greeks, well, you get the idea. FURTHERMORE, there is wisdom in ALL belief systems.
Light doesn't make a sound.
While we're at it, the bible doesn't say SHIT about abortion, and what it says about homosexuality is right next to some of the craziest things you've ever heard: things like, if a man's penis is damaged, he cannot enter the kingdom of god. MOST churches say that these "Levitical laws" were "nailed to the cross." This is why they continue eating ham, for instance. But, they hang on to the one anti gay line, for some reason.

I'll stop, now. I am SO obsessed with theology and theological history that I could go on for hours.

But, one last thing: don't panic about the possibility of death being the end. I think of it this way: how were you in the 1700s? Did you have a hard time at all? Were you ever sick, or sad? I wasn't.
In FACT, everything was pretty laid back for BILLIONS of years. The trouble, for me, began in 1980. ;)

That is a good way of thinking. Alan Watts is probably my greatest source of inspiration and admiration when it comes to this sort of subject matter. Are you a fan of his lectures?

The question in those two videos I posted above, though, “why is there something rather than nothing?” — I don’t think we will ever get a satisfying answer to it. As fascinating as those discussions are he has with those physicists and thinkers, the same questions will always inevitably get raised about contingency and necessity. If the laws of physics exist, WHY do they exist rather than not? If God exists, why was he there in the first place?

edit: elevenism, you need to clear some PM space so I can send you a message!

Yeah, I remember a discussion about this, here, a while ago.

I read a book about Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as it relates to JOBS, called "Do What You Are." Then, when I was in college, some professors would make us do the MBTI tests for group projects to sort us by MBTI.

I'm an INTJ, too. So is my husband.

This is right from MBTI: https://www.mbtionline.com/en-US/MBTI-Types/INTJ

Also: https://www.onlinepersonalitytests.org/personality-test/intj/

Very true:

Common characteristics exhibited by people with this personality type:

Enjoys theoretical and abstract concepts
Dislikes confusion, disorganization and inefficiency
Reserved and prefers solitary work to group work
Orderly and structured
Perfectionistic
High expectations and standards
More focused on the future than on the present

INTJs tend to prefer online socializing over in-person socializing, so it’s no wonder we meet each other online. :)

This pandemic and the switch to telecommuting was great for INTJs.

When I was getting my grad certificate in Paralegal studies, the attorney who was teaching the 2nd-level legal briefs writing class told us there were many law firms out there where Paralegals sat alone in little closed-off equivalence of closets all day, doing nothing but legal research.

And I, like, OH MY GOD, SIGN ME UP! That’s my DREAM JOB!!! ;)

Regarding “alright,” I know it is *acceptable*, but it still doesn’t visually look right to me, lol.

I’ve been reading contradictory things about it:

https://www.grammarly.com/blog/alright-vs-all-right/

People are often surprised to learn that alright is not an accepted spelling of all right. Although the one-word spelling of alright is seen in informal writing, teachers and editors will always consider it incorrect. To use the expression with impunity, it is best to spell it as two words: all right.

Yah, but like all research jobs....it's a throne of lies.
I was promised I would be able to do due research at my boss's behest and not have to deal with people. By the time I got to that level, the boss left me to deal with everyone - the lab, the students, and the outside collaborators. It's all good, and I finally learned to just tell everyone I was stuck in tissue culture for 2-3 hours. Which was accurate, and I would just cue a great album during which I couldn't take my hands out of the off for anyone unless it was a fire alarm for a solid 2 hours.

With legal research, you just sit there on LexisNexis or Westlaw all day, then writing synopsis reports. You can’t practice litigation without legal research, and attorneys don’t bill for it so they have paralegals do it. I did a ton of legal research, already, plus all my OTHER duties, which is just part of the job of a paralegal. Even as a real estate paralegal, you’re constantly doing research (state and county recorder and tax databases; state, county and municipal ordinances, etc.). But, the idea of research all day, without dealing with CLIENTS???? Or idiotic coworkers? Omg … Heaven! Lol. I lucked out in my last job, and had a desk WAAAAAAAAY in back away from everyone, except the weekly law clerk (who was out running errands most of the time). Then I started telecommuting all the time in about 2016.

I've been searching for real, live theistic Satanism since I was a kid: not atheist libertarians or Gnostics or crazy online UFO people like JoS, or shit made up by Black Metal bands, but organized people who REALLY, SERIOUSLY worship Satan.

I THOUGHT I'd found it in The Order of Nine Angles (O9A or ONA,) aka the group who DOES promote human sacrafice, but my reading at the time lead me to believe that they weren't really REAL: that it was maybe five people, or even ONE dude who is a prolific writer. This was, perhaps, six years ago?
Well, it's been awhile since I looked into it, and HOLY HELL, it's real.
It's confusing. They're Satanic Islamist Nazis? It's a lot to take in.
But, yeah. These fuckers have been coming out of the woodwork the past couple of years.

This wiki page was REALLY SHORT a few years ago.

Look at the fucking "terrorism and crimes" section.
It looks as though these people have finally come under scrutiny as of late in the wake of intelligence gathering on far right groups.

It also appears to me that they MAY have RECENTLY started trying to harm and terrorize people on command, as the recorded crimes committed by members only began in 2019.

Looks like I FINALLY found a POSSIBLY large, truly theistic Satanism. The fact that their influence is so full of Nazism is a real pisser; it makes the whole.thing far less interesting. Also, a religious scholar stated that they were technically hermetic, but idk. I've studied some hermeticism, and not much of it sounds like THIS shit.

But yeah, still, this is a trip.

Hello, Agent Reyes!

Regarding this part:

This account also states that in 1973 a man named "Anton Long" was initiated into the group, subsequently becoming its Grand Master.

Is the “Anton” name just coincidental?

So, in reality, that's not his real name. He's APPARENTLY really THIS DUDE, David Myatt, aka Abdul Aziz ibn Myatt. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Myatt)

He was the first leader of Britain's National Socialist Movement. He later become an anti west/anti Israel radical Jihadist.
I think he actually FOUNDED 09A in between. He wanted 09A to APPEAR to predate LaVey.
He THEN created some bizarre, horrific compilation of Nazism and Islamic Extremism. He ALSO appears to be highly intelligent, speaking multiple languages, and is considered to be pretty fucking dangerous: some sort of evil genius who is DEEP into the REALLY dark side of shit, including the nastier parts of the ancient mysteries.

David never fessed up to being Anton, but even a SHORT deep dive SURE makes it appear that he is. He, David, created The Star Game, which is some like, 3D board game (mentioned in 09A literature) that's supposed to accomplish weird metaphysical bullshit in physical reality. He now claims to follow a "peaceful way" called The Numinous Path, that ALSO happens to be part of 09A.

It's also worth mentioning that O9A literature describes Church of Satan and Temple of Set members as good candidates for human sacrifice, I guess because he thinks they're pretend Satanists.

He publicly disregarded "all extremism" in 2010, but that's PROBABLY because he was on a lot of fucking watch lists.
So yeah. Nazism, Islamic Terror, and Theistic Satanism that encourages human sacrifice. Not the sort of dude I'd want to meet up with.

EDIT: so I wanted to see this Black Book of Satan. Supposedly it was given to the leader of each cell or whatever the fuck, years ago, one copy each. I ALSO had long assumed THIS to be bullshit, but then I found one paper bound copy on Amazon for $1000. So, like...were this REAL? Were they REALLY given to like, 09A High Priests, so that they could start their own Satanic human sacrifice club?

AND, I found THIS. You can NOW read this horrific shit on your tablet.
I read a few pages, regarding the basics, and it's sort of "don't be a pussy. Be a terrible asshole, you little bitch. Harm people. Be mean as fuck to everyone."
It's that sort of thing, but written more eloquently.

Dude there were people in a couple of nursing homes who had like...like flat heads. I'm talking, their heads were only about half as tall as they should be. They HAD to have been missing the top of their skull, but I also wonder if/how much of their brains were missing.
I didn't ask. They weren't my patients. I've seen and had to do some weird shit in the healthcare field, from emptying colostomy bags to taking care of people who had fully exposed bones due to neurotic infection, and having to CLEAN the bones, to carrying out dead bodies.

Oh jesus Christ allegro . I don't want ANY PART of the Great Lakes...especially the deepest one.

I did a 'polar bear dip' (boxers only) in Lake Superior once, mid-October 2010. Cold as fuck! Nothing really scary in there — too icy for big gnarly shit to live in. Just lampreys; I hate lampreys. Don't Google them, their horrible mouths look like Mynocks chewing on the power cables of the Millennium Falcon.

I did "polar bears club" in Boy Scouts, so I could get a special badge or whatever. Good god, I didn't know what I was signing up for.
They'd wake you up, from your tent, at like 6am; this was on a late fall camping thing.

I did that shit every morning for a week. :P

It was COLD.

Oh my God, I hate Sea Lampreys, too!! The Great Lakes are full of them! They’re terrifying!!!! The numbers are down in Lakes Michigan, Huron and Ontario, but they’ve increased in Superior and Erie.

(Although, I’ve never actually seen one in person, LOL)

The WARMEST Lake Superior EVER gets … like, in AUGUST … is 65. You get hypothermia when you swim in water that’s 60 degrees.

It’s between 48 and 58 in October. Lake Superior is fucking COLD!!!

Lake Michigan is pretty cold, too (we used to swim in northeast Lake Michigan in August and our lips would be blue lol), and Huron isn’t exactly warm, but Superior … omg.

I don't know what a Sea Lamprey IS, but I don't like the sound of it.

Furthermore, the whole IDEA of the Great Lakes scares the hell out of me: all kinds of shipwrecks and dead bodies and shit? Isn't there some sort of Great Lakes Triangle?

Yeah, y'all can go.on and KEEP all that, you northern folk.

Possum Kingdom is PRETTY much more lake than I can handle, personally. :p

Edit: that's actually a real place, and not just the name of a Toadies song, for the record.

I took a scuba diving class in Maui. We started with general instructions, then moved with our equipment to a swimming pool. Our first task was to put the regulator mouthpiece into our mouths, and breathe face-down in the pool. As someone who’s been swimming before I could walk (and has had the OPPOSITE of “breathe underwater” drilled into their head) … I almost passed out. LOL. The instructor said that’s okay, happens all the time as I said no way, I ain’t doing this. Meanwhile, my husband, who can’t swim, has never swam, did great! But opted not to do the ocean dive. I DID go boogie boarding, though, since we already did that growing up on Lake Michigan.

Speaking of Superior:

My Dad was born and raised in the city where the SS Edmund Fitzgerald (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Edmund_Fitzgerald) was built (https://www.thenewsherald.com/2013/11/06/river-rouge-anniversary-of-edmund-fitzgerald-observed).

There are very few Michigan-born kids from that era (and beyond) who don't know all the lyrics to this song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuzTkGyxkYI

By the way, a bit of trivia:

The lyrics include:

"In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the maritime sailors' cathedral
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald"

That's Mariner's Church in downtown Detroit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariners%27_Church).

Fred "Sonic" Smith loved that church, it's where he and Patti Smith were married, it's where Patti placed a memorial to him (http://www.mtv.com/news/504840/dateline-detroit-patti-smith-pays-tribute-to-fred-sonic-smith) (she had fundraisers after Fred died, i went to a few which were AWESOME):

I can't do scuba because of health issues but I am an absolute water child. I am at home it water.

By the way, I consider water as a solid. If you ever jumped into water from a bit of height, you know by the sting you feel when entering the water how solid it is. And unless you're being weighed down, if you get into water, you float; you don't sink.

We all float...
Now when I first moved to the Dallas area at seven, we got season passes to Wet and Wild.
My mom, brother and I went three or four times a week during the summer. This went on until.they tore the place down in 92 or so,.when I was.twelve.
I love big water SLIDES, and "for strong swimmers only" rides that shoot you out several feet above a 14 ft deep pool. I love the wave pool. I have WONDERFUL memories of all of that.

I lived in an all bills paid apt in north dallas, where the hot water literally never ran out, and I'd sit in the shower, reading or texting, for 3 hours a day after work.

Also, I caught a case for graffiti once, and wound up in a segregation cell because I had a damn staph infection, and that cell had a SHOWER in it. And, again, I'd stand in that shower for 2-3 hours a day.

I love water. I love pools and slides and water rides and hot tubs and ESPECIALLY, being near running water. I love to sit in the shower and read. I'm a Pisces, even.
AND, some of my earliest memories were.taking swimming lessons when I was like TWO or something.

I'm definitely a "water child" too.

I just don't want any live plants or animals in the water. THAT'S the thing.
I don't want any weird fish, or kale, or strange fucking amphibious plants, or ANYTHING like that.

When i was a kid even though i couldn't swim i still liked going to the beach sometimes and I'd go far enough into the water to where my feet barely touched the ground anymore, one thing i always had with me though was water shoes lol I don't like the idea of my feet coming into contact with ANYTHING in there.

I was also always afraid of getting leeches on me, I'm glad that's never happened.

Unless you’re my husband. He can’t learn Dead Man’s Float. I’ve tried and tried to teach him, but his butt jackknifes and down he sinks. I’ve since spoken with others who can’t seem to get the hang of floating. I’ve even tried teaching my husband while floating on my back and talking with him, demonstrating that you don’t need to gasp and fill your lungs full of air and hold your breath to “float.” It didn’t work.

I wanted to be on an Olympic synchronized swim team when I was a kid (now known as artistic swimming); I can float for literally hours while moving around the pool using only my hands to move.

This is called “sculling.”.

I don't think I would be happy living away from the ocean. I've lived close to the Pacific all of my life. The last 30+ years I've lived in a house 2-3 blocks from Puget Sound. I've been thinking about dying a lot lately because of some serious health issues & I think I've decided I want my ashes scattered in the Sound. I need to communicate that to the people who would deal with it.

I was a lifeguard for three years in high school and had to learn how to float while holding 45lb weights. I can swim faster than my wife just using my arms. I can jump into the water fully clothed and turn everything into a float.

All of which is to say I can't do the crawl to save my life or anyone else's. I get three strokes in and can't breathe anymore, I just can't do the head turn.

I can’t crawl for shit, either!! :D I hate it! I can backstroke, swim underwater, breast stroke. But I HATE the crawl! Because of turning! I wear nose clips, doesn't help.

My stepgrandma was a lifeguard and taught us a modified crawl, where you roll from a backstroke to a crawl and to a backstroke again etc., and that's really cool!

chuckrh I know what you mean, kind of. I’ve never lived away from the Great Lakes. At one point, I’ve lived only a few blocks from Lake Michigan and a block from Lake Huron. I live about two miles from Lake Michigan now, for the last 23 years. We’ve had two boats in Lake Michigan (sailors have told us its waves are worse than the Atlantic or Pacific). Lake Michigan also scares the shit out of me, because it almost killed me, in Ludington, when I was about 8 (rip current (https://www.fox6now.com/news/lake-michigan-rip-current-warning-after-drownings)).

"Your instinct is to fight to survive, and what we want you to do is do the opposite of your instinct, to flip, float and follow." <-- The latter was my instinct, that's what saved me.

My Dad died in 2016, and wanted his cremains scattered in Lake Michigan in Ludington. I still have to arrange that, it’s complicated, but I’m determined that it will get done.

Did you guys catch this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jrvWUNHSPQ

It's 30 or so big name youtubers, from the true crime/investigative genres, taking a stand against YouTube's increasingly stringent and vague guidelines- the guidlines that force them to walk on eggshells; meanwhile, fake "animal rescue" channels (animals are abused and then "rescued," all by the creators,) and other terrible exploitative content continues to thrive.
And it's pretty hardcore. There are some serious fighting words going on, here. Furthermore, others are picking up the cause, too. In fact, this video would be GONE if so many big names weren't involved.

I'm afraid it's a fool's errand, though: no matter how many big name creators get in on this, sadly, it's still a David and Goliath situation.

Edit: if you guys think this would work better in a different thread, let me know. I think it's interesting because this has never happened before. It's like they're trying to unionize.
