Been on quite a Van Halen listening streak since the announcements were made.

Trying to catch them live if they come to Europe. Never seen them live before.

New song is smooth, the chorus is kinda silly, though.

There's some pretty ludicrous stuff going on in that video, but sadly, I don't think Van Halen's new record will come anywhere close to Lulu in the ludicrousness stakes.

Not digging "Tattoo" at all. The song just sounds far too "safe", and the lyrics are horrendous. It's missing Mike Anthony's harmonies.

I hope the rest is better.

And that picture of Roth in the vocals only video is creepy shit. But still it's damn funny.

Yikes. I saw them 8 or 9 years ago too it's down there as far as bad shows go.

Apparently these aren't new songs, but rather old songs just finally being released/recorded.

VH played some dates overseas this year and Dave recently posted that new VH sessions will soon by underway. LOVED ADKOT--my favorite album of 2012 and I'd love a follow-up.

As for the 2004 tour mentioned in this thread--Sammy talks about that in his book. Eddie really was a mess back then. People may be pissed that Mike's gone, but Wolf is responsible for bringing VH back from the dead. He's made Eddie want to tour/record again.

I listened to A Different Kind of Truth yesterday for the first time in a while and I've got to say that the album still amazes me. Yes, "Tattoo" was very safe. It's a fun, upbeat song, but really is the most tepid thing on the album. I agree that it's missing MA's harmonies, but the background vocals on the rest of the album sound pretty good. When I was listening to ADKOT yesterday I was struck by how HEAVY it is. It really rocks like a motherfucker and it strikes the perfect balance between sounding modern and retro. It's just a great album and, IMHO, stands up well against anything from those six classic albums (1978-1984). Dave recently stated (about three months ago) that Van Halen would be doing something around 2015.

I think that's from when they toured together in 2002 (I think?).

I remember that special. It was during their 2002 tour. It was pretty weird as it was fun seeing Sammy getting all pissed off because he's in a little room with his band while Dave is having the time of his life and telling his people to stay away from the Cabo Wabo. Dave was my idol as a tiny kid. I loved his moves and was dancing to Van Halen. I thought of him as a God. He's still my mofo!!!

Doing the math, I think I'd have to make like 8 or 9 posts to put it all in, actually lol.

This is where it originated, back in 2004 (http://www.guitars101.com/forums/f77/sammy-hagar-book-excerpts-chapters-19amp20-a-22489.html) while Sammy was on tour with VH for their ill-fated reunion attempt. I think it was never published because Sammy probably realized it cut too deep and maybe would have severed the VH ties. He really goes after VH's manager from that period, Ray Danniels, who happens to be Rush's manager (and has been with them their whole career).

Sammy did release a book in 2011 and it does not paint the Van Halen brothers in a very positive light, especially EVH. According to the book, Eddie was a total, out of control loon in the early to mid 00s. People may complain about Wolf being in the band, but at least he brought Eddie back to reality and we have had a few tours and an album to show for it.

I saw the Dave/Sammy tour in 2002--good show. I'm more of a Dave fan, but Sammy put on a better show. Sam's band just sounded better and he played songs from his entire career. Plus he had Gary Cherone and Mike Anthony joined him for a few songs. Dave was good, but it seemed like I was watching a VH cover band and he hammed it up a bit too much and looked ridiculous:
http://www.concertshots.com/May Images/cs-DavidLeeRoth1a-Atlanta5302.JPG
He was just way too old for that look and looks far better since rejoining Van Halen:

I can't believe that was 11 years ago. Well, Sam is with Chickenfoot and released a pretty good solo album last year and Dave is back with Van Halen, so all is right in the world.

The video from the Foo Fighters show? The entire band, Dave and the audience looked like they were having a great time. As for DLR vs. Sammy, I'm a Dave guy, but Sam is technically a better singer with a lot more range. They are both good at what they do, but Eddie has a better chemistry with Dave, IMHO.

Eh. I'll buy it, of course, but this is kind of a letdown. A new album or a box-set of demos would be of far greater interest. Even a live show from the 1984 tour would be somewhat exciting. This just seems kind of anti-climatic and nothing more than a cash grab.

That would be great. And if they are going to reissue their past albums, it should be the ones from the Hagar-era. They already remastered the Roth albums in 2000 and they sound great. The Sam-era albums, however, could desperately use a remastering.

Yeah, to be fair the 2000 remasters are fine, i just would like a "deluxe" version with B-sides and live versions, i don't think they can sound better and i don't want a "louder remaster" that will end up being another victim of the "loudness war".

Funny how there seems to be a bottomless well of Hendrix posthumous albums--live albums, alt. takes, demos, works-in-progress, etc., but there's been practically no official release of any VH material, outside their 12 albums and now two live albums. Hendrix only recorded for about four years, compared to Van Halen's near 40. There must be tons of shit in the fault. Hell, even that aborted second album with Gary Cherone would be interesting to hear.

Some of Van Halen's music has aged rather well. The first six albums (DLR-era) still sound great and are a cornerstone to any decent rock collection. The first two albums with Sammy Hagar sound really dated, due to the production values, electric kit and keyboards. A remastering of those two albums would go a long way in terms or improving their sound.

Van Halen were my favorite band in high school and I was an obsessive fanatic. I still follow them and will give them a listen from time to time, but I've sort of moved on to other bands. It's just that for four years about 75% of what I listened to was Van Halen and I'm fatigued with their albums, although I did love A Different Kind of Truth and feel that's the best album of its type (guitar rock, hard rock) in ages. I was hoping for a follow-up, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon, if ever. Instead we get a lame live album.

The album suffers from a muddy, poor production and Gary's strained singing at times is another major flaw. If you can look past that, however, there's some great moments and, overall, the album is not as bad its reputation, IMHO. I am very curious to hear what the follow-up would have sounded like. They were well on their way to completing their second album with Gary when he was let-go. I'd love to hear those along with the 1985 demos that Van Halen were recording with David Lee Roth, shortly before he left. Roth sang on an early demo of "Summer Nights," originally titled "Eat Thy Neighborhood." Man, I'd love for that to be released.

I think it is safe to say anything Gary Cherone related will never see light...
If I am not wrong, even VH3 is no longer in print which to me suggests Eddie wants to erase that whole era

I actually didn't mind Gary's vocals and perhaps if another band released VH3, it wouldn't be so badly criticised.

I listened to the new live album today and was pleasantly surprised. My expectations were low based on the songs that I heard, mostly because Dave sounded pretty rough, but the album is actually pretty good. Yeah, Dave sounds thin, but if you listen to the entire concert from the beginning and go with the flow, it's a very enjoyable show. Ed and Al sound awesome and Wolfie can hold his own. Dave's banter (he sometimes speaks in Japanese) is also a lot of fun. This isn't an essential album or one of the best live albums ever, but if you like Van Halen you should dig this album.

He said that Dave doesn't "want to be his friend" and listens to dance music while the other three like rock n' roll. No big deal, as far as I'm concerned. Ed and Dave always had a love/hate relationship. Plus, Eddie has often said how awesome Sammy or Gary was, right before they had a falling out, so I wouldn't make too much of this.

I thought that his comments about Mike being a shitty singer and how his harmonies were never that important and how Mike didn't know how to play bass (Ed claims he had to teach him) were low-blows and pretty dickish.

That said, I'd be kind of be surprised if Van Halen did record another album. They're so dysfunctional and not getting any younger. That said, they released a dozen albums, all of which I've enjoyed and while I'd always love another one, their legacy is all set and if it ends tomorrow. I'm glad that they went out on top with the excellent A Different Kind of Truth.

I'm looking forward to seeing them this summer, even if it is for the last time.

I do think Sammy tends to exaggerate, i.e., "I was just as big as Van Halen was, as a solo artist in 1984," "I sold 100 million albums with Van Halen," etc., but I'm with Sammy on this. I really, really doubt that Mike was so incompetent he couldn't play the bass parts for Van Halen. Mike is the nicest guy in that band and Ed treated him like shit. That's not right.

Seeing Sammy Hagar and The Circle this May in Boston. I'm honestly a lot more excited about that than a possible Van Halen tour. I'm more of a Dave guy, but another tour without any new album is pretty stale--hearing the same songs for the past 12 years.

They're very different, personality and tone-wise, but... the unifying similarity to me feels like... I dunno, they both seem like people you'd expect to see hanging out on a yacht, grinning and toasting you with a Pina colada. They both feel like "cocaine-rawk Jimmy Buffets" to me.

I have a good Eddie Van Halen story that I was too upset & ill to share yesterday. I had chemo yesterday morning & got home to hear the news of Eddie's passing. Not a good day. So let's hop in the time machine & head back to 1978. I was 17 & a junior in high school. At this point I am seriously getting into music which affected my life (good & bad) for decades to come. The first record came out in February of 1978. I was hanging out at my favorite record store & they said listen to this & put the record on as there was no radio play yet. Eruption comes on & it was like a bolt of lightning. My friends & I freaked out because there wasn't anything else out there that sounded like that. Bought the album immediately. A few months later they came to town as an opener for Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die tour. Van Halen absolutely destroyed them. Sabbath were not at their best & it turned out they fired Ozzy after the tour. They were so bad that we left the show early. Went to a party at a friend's place & I came up with the bright idea of heading down to the Edgewater to try & meet the band. The hotel was the stay of choice for bands. You could fish from the rooms & it was made famous by Frank Zappa song about mudsharks. So, we got there & bluffed our way into the cocktail lounge being underage & all. Turns out both bands were there & it was party time in the bar. We noticed Eddie was sitting at a table by himself in the corner so we wandered over to say hi. I think Eddie figured out we were there on the sly & told us to have seat saying he'd rather hang with fans than anyone else. We ended up getting quite a buzz on with him & he was very cool & nice to us. We met Ozzy, too. He was nice to us, too. On the other hand, David Lee already was really arrogant & aloof. 1 friend ended up spilling a really sloppy drink like a tequila sunrise on him by accident. He was not pleased! To cap it off, on the way back to the car I see a flash of green & dove on it. Turned out it was $40 which was a healthy amount of money in those days. What a night! I saw VH a bunch in the early days. I think they would've been an even bigger deal if Sammy Hagar was the singer from the beginning. DLR was entertaining but irritating & finally he was just insufferable. I saw them with Sammy a few times including a memorable show with Alice in Chains opening. Didn't catch any of the reunion shows. Now I kind of wish I had but I don't think it would've topped the early shows. RIP Eddie, you were 1 of a kind for sure!

Sorry to hear about your situation @chuckrh (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=6224) . Hope you pull through.

Thanks Krazy . It's a battle that's been going on for 10 years. What I have is a really bad version of rheumatoid arthritis. They use chemo to try & slow down the progression with mixed results. I won't be feeling too hot until sometime this weekend. The damage has been accumulating & I had to take a disability retirement a year ago. That was about 5 years after the doctors started telling me I should. Turns out the timing was good as the company isn't doing too well with the pandemic. It wasn't in great shape before that either. Major aerospace that shall remain nameless. I'm still walking etc but every day is a challenge. It's definitely a sword of Damocles situation. People don't really understand about RA. There are a real lot of variations that run from mild to severe. Lucky me got 1 in the severe category. Most likely it's or complications are going to kill me sooner rather than later. That's what did in Glen Frey of the Eagles. Would've been good if that had raised awareness but sadly Bowie died later in the week. Some people here have heard this so sorry if redundant. The pandemic has definitely made things even tougher as my immune system is not good at all. I try to get by best I can. Hopefully there will be a vaccine soon. It's been tough going to see live music before the pandemic & getting worse. I hope I get a few more shows in from favorite artists while I still can. This month was originally going to be 1 for the ages. Roger Waters, Nick Cave & multiple NIN shows of course! Sigh.

Looks like Wolf and Al will look through the vaults of 5150 for unreleased recordings. (https://ultimateclassicrock.com/van-halen-unreleased-songs/)

There's a ton of stuff. The 1976 demos (which are highly bootlegged), the 1985 sessions with David Lee Roth before he left the group, 4-5 songs that were recorded for For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge but didn't make the album, several completed or near completed songs for the follow-up to Van Halen 3 with Gary Cherone, the 2001 aborted sessions with David Lee Roth, several demos from A Different Kind of Truth and various other odds-and-ends.

Not a bad song, but Malloy is a little generic. A more traditional VH sounding album, with the right producer with Malloy might have had a better chance than what we got with Van Halen 3.

I mean, it's not a great song, but it's fun and I'm hoping DLR releases that album he recorded with John 5 at some point.

On another note, I picked up some Van Halen bootlegs on Ebay. One is from Pensacola, Florida, 1995, first show of the Balance tour. Really great recording (better than the Live: Right Here, Right Now, the official live album from 1993). Jon Stewart introduces the band. Check out this show, really good shit.

My Grandpa came here from Holland through Ellis Island with his entire family (my Dad and his brother and sister were/are first generation American), and the extended family on that side would all sit around speaking Dutch. I know SOME Dutch, very very little.

But hearing Alex and Eddie speaking fluent Dutch is, well, oddly comforting now that all of my relatives who speak fluent Dutch have passed.

The end of this song, the voicemail from Ed? Made me cry immediately. Not so much because of Ed, but because it reminds me of my Dad, who died in March of ‘16; he used to leave me voicemail messages like that all the time. The response on Wolf’s IG page shows I’m not alone in this. The whole song really resonates with people who’ve experienced loss, especially those who’ve lost a parent.

Rivers Cuomo is disappointed that Eddie Van Halen won’t get to hear Weezer's 'Van Weezer' album (https://www.guitarworld.com/news/rivers-cuomo-is-disappointed-that-eddie-van-halen-wont-get-to-hear-weezers-van-weezer-album)

Weezer’s “all guitars and shredding” album, Van Weezer, was scheduled for release in May 2020 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now the record, which Weezer dedicated to Eddie Van Halen, will come out in on May 7, 2021. But as singer and guitar player Rivers Cuomo noted in a new interview, this means that Van Halen, who passed away on October 6, 2020 at the age of 65, won’t hear it.

“Just from a self-centered perspective, we’re disappointed,” Cuomo told Apple Music’s The Strombo Show.

“It would have been cool if he could have heard the record. And I don’t know if it would have meant anything to him. But he could have seen his influence bearing fruit decades later and in this modern record of 2021.”

Unless a band performs for free, it's always about the money (in part). With Satriani on guitar, this could really work. If Sam is part of the tour, that will be great for Dave as he won't have to sing as long. Maybe an hour setlist with Dave, and then an hour with Sam, and then Dave and Sam can duet a song or two.

Sammy's new album Crazy Times is out today.

From another Rolling Stone interview with Dave Cobb, who produced Crazy Times:
Cobb wanted the record to draw inspiration from all eras of Hagar’s career, with a special emphasis on his time in Van Halen. The presence of Van Halen/Circle bassist Michael Anthony made that pretty easy. “The first thing I told Michael when we got to the studio was that I wanted him to do that classic Van Halen harmony,” says Cobb. “He was such huge part of their sound, and we really tried to get those classic Van Halen vocal sounds. He’s just such an incredible singer, and the way he stacks harmonies is amazing to watch.”

Going to give Crazy Times a spin this afternoon. Looking forward to hearing it.

Jesus, this guy’s insufferable. He takes every chance possible to air out his grievances at the expense of anyone else, including dead people who can’t defend themselves. Sam wrote a book about this shit; but here he is, again, waiving his hands, “wait, look, I gotta tell people how things went down” - for the hundredth time - but now he’s trying to temper it with “but I was talking with Ed as he was dying in the hospital and it was all good” so he looks like he was Ed’s best pal. While Sam’s basically bitching about Wolfie because Michael wasn’t around.

Oh, God, and don’t tell anyone he was ever in Van Halen. While he’s doing “Right Now” every night.

Dave sucks. Totally. I loved Dave for being Dave but Dave just can’t fucking stop being Dave.

HOWEVER … Dave, at least, has the credentials of writing the lyrics for pretty much all the original Van Halen hits.

As someone who was around during Van Halen’s first album and their meteoric rise to fame … a lot of that was due to Ed, absolutely, but a TON of it was due to Dave, and his lyrics and showmanship.

Sammy?

He was brought in by the manager. We already knew him from Montrose, which was a great band. It wasn’t a difficult transition.

https://youtu.be/CtDO3qBo72M

But Sam goes shit-talking Ed and Alex in interviews, and then bitches about how Mikey lost his job?

Ed said the ONLY reason he toured again was because WOLF was there. Period. There wouldn’t have been another album or tour had Ed’s son not been involved to help Ed handle it all.

But here’s Sam, still complaining about Ed after he’s dead, still bitching about Alex. Ed said “why didn’t you just call me?” Yeah, good question, Sam. You’re still telling this same story, 90 times, bitching how Alex won’t return your calls. Ed’s been dead TWO YEARS, and you’re chasing down a journalist, wanting to tell “your side of the story” that you’ve told 50 fucking times. Meanwhile, where’s Dave?

And they DID return DAVE’S calls. That’s gotta tell you something right there, on the totem pole of dick-ology.

To be fair, when anyone interview Sammy Hagar most of the questions will be about Van Halen.

Near the end of the interview, the conversation inevitably turned toward Van Halen and the possibility of a tribute concert to Eddie Van Halen featuring all the surviving members of the band. A few days later, we heard from Hagar’s camp that he wanted to get back on the phone: He had a lot more to say about his former band. “I really think that it’s OK just to speak how I really feel now,” he said when we reconnected, “because there is no animosity left in my heart, in my soul, anywhere.”

Yawn.
