I really hope that they decide to more than just a couple of festival dates and tour the US. And call it wishful thinking, but if ATDI and Refused decided to do a joint reunion tour together, well I'm pretty sure my pants would explode.

Meh, I don't know... It's possible they put on some good shows, but I'm sceptical. My greatest concern is Dennis voice, you can hear it in all the post-refused projects he's been involved in, it's just not what it used to be and he can't pull off those screams anymore. I hope I'm wrong though.

Refused show announced at Terminal 5 in New York City, NY on April 23rd. A special charity pre-sale will kick off today with public on-sales set to start tomorrow, January 25th. Those interested should keep an eye on the band's Facebook page for more details. On top of that the group have been added to the “Øya Festival” in Oslo, Norway on August 10th.

They were ridiculous!! Really, really tight. Dennis was psyched out of his mind, lotta energy and very happy. same for the whole band for that matter. Dennis can still belt it out really well too. Told some funny stories about back in the day for them....one was how excited they were to finally come to NYC and play in Manhattan where all their favorite NYHC bands were from, and then they got booked in LI with Snapcase.

Lou from SOIA came out and they did Injustice System. that was really fun. New Noise obviously got the biggest reaction.

Cerebral Ballzy was so, so terrible. Maybe i'm an old fuck, but that "i can't be bothered" schtick is kinda weak, part. when you're trying to do snotty 80's hardcore in 2012. Would have much rather seen Ceremony tomorrow.

setlist:

- Worms of the Senses / Faculties of the Skull
- The Refused Party Program
- Liberation Frequency
- Rather Be Dead
- Coup d'état
- Summerholidays vs. Punkroutine
- The Deadly Rhythm

- Refused Are Fucking Dead
- Life Support Addiction
- Injustice System (SOIA cover with Lou from SOIA)

Got my tix as well, can`t wait! You won`t regret it, I saw them at Rock im Park and they were great. Problem was I fucked up my ankle on the first song and it wasn`t the experience I was looking for. And besides most of the people didn`t know who they are which was really annoying. So I have big hopes for this show! Kesselhaus is a great location too.

as long as this is a riff-fest in the way TSOPTC is (not necessarily with the techno/trance integration, since they already did that), i'll be happy. especially if they allowed the avant-garde leanings from the end of the record to fester and propagate – "Tannhäuser/Derivè" is one hell of a track!

Haven't heard 'Elektra' yet, and don't want to until within the context of "Freedom".

you should still listen to Elektra. That's what you would have done in a heartbeat in 1998. It's really good. It's also the first song on the album... you get a good preview, but no spoilers.

I'm holding off on the new single that they just released. I can wait.

Yikes, this record is pretty bad so far. It's always sad when an incredibly influential band changes the landscape of a sub-genre with one intense record and then tries to recapture lightning in a bottle twice years later only to find themselves with average production and the loss of their original magic.

I don't necessarily think they're trying to recapture lightning in a bottle, though. I really think that they were just having fun being back together and decided "fuck it, why not" and obviously 17 years later they're all in very different places, musically, so they didn't even attempt to try to make another "punk" album, and just made what they found was fun and interesting. It's a totally different album than anyone expected from them, and I dig that about it. Granted, I won't make an official call on it until I am able to hear it a few times, but the one time I went through, I enjoyed how out there it is. The exact same thing would probably happen if ATDI finally made a new one. Everyone would expect a sequel to ROC, but in reality it'd probably be a super spacey chilled out prog album.

Oh and I totally get that too, there's no reason that they should've ever attempted to make a sequel to their first record but for me the song writing and lyrical content doesn't stick with me as much as they should. It seems they're pulling from a lot of the similar themes and tones from their first record, but the directions these tracks go in just misses the mark for me. For my ears at least, this is the kind of record that if this was put out by [insert band name here] on Vagrant or Victory Records, it would just be looked at as just another run of the mill album. =/

I agree with you though, if ATDI ever decided to make an album again it would be as proggy as possible.

Hate to be the buzzkill here, but Pitchfork leveled this album with a review of 5.4: http://m.pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20726-freedom/

Yikes. I wasn't expecting a milestone the likes of TSOPTC, but is it really as lifeless as they're making it out to be?

Ouch, even that review didn't seem to exactly hate the album all that much. They even put it below the new Sun Kil Moon album.

I'm not exactly loving the album, but it isn't 5.4 out of 10 bad. It's a good album.

Listened to Freedom again while mowing the yard yesterday. That album grows on me with every listen and I think it got unduly weighed down by unobtainable expectations at the time of its release that made everyone go "meh" because it didn't blow our minds like Shape, but it's a damn fine album. Elektra and Dawkins Christ make me headbang like crazy. You see a goober mowing his yard pumping his fist, that's me mowing to Refused.

Listened to "Blood Red" a couple times now. I like it, but I don't love it. Feels very similar to sound of Freedom album. Lyrics are definitely more direct and confrontational than Freedom though.

Don't get me wrong, it's all gravy and I will enjoy it all, but to me it suffers from the same thing that latter day At The Drive-In and Pixies do--they're stuck in (mostly) a single gear/speed and the dynamics that made the band so compelling in the first place are missing.

I also checked out the video for REV001 today, which is really awesome and much more of a "real" music video than I expected, compared to the other recent clips.

1) The Shape of Punk to Come

No doubt about "shape of punk to come", 12 bursts indeed. "freedom" and "war music" are a tie for me, both records have stellar songs but fall a little flat in the long run. Combined they would have made for a killer record though and the songs fit well into the existing live set. Can't wait to see them later this year, hopefully that is...

Dennis told me about False Names about two years ago, exciting to see it coming to life right now. But I guess INVSN will remain my favorite out of his projects outside of Refused. Noise Conspiracy, while great in its own sense, never grabbed me like I hope it would. It's still baffling to me how relevant that guy still is and what a power house he is on stage though. No matter which project, I will see this man whenever he comes to my city or anywhere near. And frankly, he's the only artist these days that I can take serious when talking about politics and society on stage. Spot on, well spoken and never belligerent to the point of becoming too self absorbed.

Lots of love for this band and Dennis:

While I'm heartbroken over that cancelled Euro tour next month, Refused just released a new song under their name "Samurai" for the upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077:

Currently there are four tracks available right now, but I hope there is more once the game is out as stated earlier above. Might be not as good as proper Refused songs, but I enjoy these alot and see them as a kind of bonus EP to "war music".

That's some low quality Refused right there....

Hm, I think the songs are quite nice, a little odd for Refused, but enjoyable nevertheless and I guess that was the point of a fictional band. Hence why Dennis' pronounciations are so clear in order to make his accent not as noticeable. Won't get the game though.

They streamed an event for that game yesterday and there's a part dedicated to Refused or at least Dennis gets to talk a bit about "Becoming Samurai":

Guess I will never not care about this band. New EP "The Malignant Fire" coming out on November 20th.

Digging the new track so far:

Love this band and always have and likely always will. Elitist punker fucks riffed on Freedom when it came out years back, but I always dug that album. It’s experimental and weird and there’s no way you follow up a game changer like TSOPTC anyway, so..

War Music was like a throwback to STFTFOD and I love every minute of it. Hopefully this new EP scorches, too. I’m glad these guys are committed to their reunion and adding to their 90s legacy with quality stuff in the modern day..

The EP is out now

After one listen I like it. Enjoyed Freedom and War Music too.

New EP is a banger; Organic Organic Organic (Go Fuck Yourself) absolutely rips. It's a nice compliment to War Music, which I loved. My only complaint is that it blows by in warp speed at only 15 minutes in length. Kind of wish they had just banged out five more songs to make it a new full-length, or included their songs from under the Samurai moniker since none of them are going to be on the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack. Guess that's what downloads and CD-Rs are for..

I love getting older and still listening to the bands and musicians who changed my life when I was younger and still feeling those same vibes in their music all these years later. Refused will never be fucking dead..

I think I read somewhere that the Samurai songs could be released on a seperate EP in the near future. Maybe Dennis' instagram? It would make sense as those are written with a different approach. And maybe they can't release it before the game is out because of potential spoilers? At least I hope that there are even more Samurai songs that we haven't heard yet.

New Samurai track from Cyberpunk. Excited if we get even more songs once the game is out:

So Refused recorded 6 songs for Cyberpunk. We can listen to 5 unless the last one is hidden in the game. And we will be getting a physical release it seems. Sweet! Digging all the tracks so far, with Black Dog being my favorite.

Kind of a missed opporrunity that they didn't announce this EP / put it up for pre-order along with the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack compilations vol. 1 and 2 or the release of the game itself. But I'm glad they will release it anyway. Soon...?

Pretty sure something got in the way or they couldn't figure out a format that they were happy with. I'd love a little vinyl EP with neat packaging, maybe even have six prints of the artstyle for people to enjoy without playing the game/having to own it. Like you said, a little soundtrack on it's own.

New INVSN album Let the Night Love You is out since June 3rd.

Some great tracks on there. I need to give the whole album a little more attention before I am able to rank it among their others.

The record is super nice, but yeah, no real standout tracks or "hits" on it. It's a slow burner, but a good one! Favorite song might be "slow disco" followed by "stay with me". But most of all I'm looking forward to see them again live! That's where their strenght is!

Oh shit Slow Disco is sexy. I haven't given Dennis' side pieces much time but maybe I need to change that. (inc aside)

Yeah, INVSN is not really like Refused, more influenced by post punk and retro wave. Definitely worth checking out if you're a little bit into these genres. AC4 is more straight up hardcore punk and I still need to check out Fake Names myself. From what I've heard it's kind of classic punk rock in the vain of Bad Religion (no surprise considering the other members), so I wasn't very interested in it at the time they released their first record. More music is in the works though.

Anyway, as dlb pointed out: if you have the chance of seeing any of Dennis' bands live, do so! He's always giving his all, even in front of small audiences. I've seen him with four different bands now and it was always great, from a big festival stage with The (International) Noise Conspiracy to a small club with AC4. INVSN is no difference!
