What you said but change Chicago to Portland. I am always in the mood for Saturdays = Youth and a friend of mine recently discovered them. Such an amazing live show!

saw them in DC, with Active Child opening, at The Black Cat (worst venue ever). i think their epic sound can certainly benefit from a much larger venue.

Really? I saw them at Lincoln Hall in Chicago which was tiny, and I absolutely loved the venue because of its size. I saw Muse in an arena, and they put on a great show, but it wasn't as cool, IMO because of the size.

well, maybe not at an arena (even though they wrote the album exactly with the arena in mind, inspired by touring with Depeche Mode), but a venue where the sound is good wherever you are and you can see the stage. at the shitty Black Cat in DC unless you're right in front of the stage (i.e. no pee break because the highly competitive DC crowd of young professionals won't let you back in) it's a shit experience.

I can't stop listening to the new album!

Saw them at Lincoln Hall, too, and I think it was your AIR patch I spotted on your jacket, Malechite. The show was amazing, and Lincoln Hall was a really nice venue to see them at. This video of their appearance on Jimmy Fallon makes me wish I had tickets to both their shows in Chicago, and streaming video ripping abilities.

saw them at Webster Hall in NYC and was blown away just like I was in '08. They will be doing 3000-5000 capacity clubs from now on, and should prolly be a major major act for all the summer festivals in 2012. I would have loved to see them open for NIN at one point...mighta stolen the show though...and they kinda have the same kind of epic aesthetic that Trent does.

2nd best show i saw this year after Portishead.

I've only really listened to the new album once, but nothing really stood out enough to make me want to immediately jump back in. I'll definitely give it another try sometime, but every previous album M83's catalogue had at least 1 song that I loved on first listen.

I can't help but think this band would have been so much better with a more talented vocalist. I feel they have to drown the vocals in effects to make him/them/whatever sound listenable. Instrumentally this band is awesome.

Wayne Coyne is at every show ever. There have been numerous times where I've randomly spotted him hanging out at shows in and around the KC area with Kliph, who actually lives in Lawrence. Such a cool dude.

He's very cool, he was just in town for the weekend while Mike and Steve were at Yo Gabba Gabba with their kids. Talked to him for 10 minutes about Pink Floyd. He also mentioned that Anthony from M83 and him were talking about possibly collaborating for an EP or sorts, similar to the crap he's been doing with Neon Indian and others. M83 and FLips would blow my mind.

I will be hitting the Detroit show. It's about time that a band I want to see live comes to this area. I bought a pre-sale ticket through crowdsource. Did anyone do the same with the last round of touring? I'm sure I'm being unnecessarily paranoid about being able to get in when I get to the venue.

Love the new M83. At first I thought some of the instrumental transitions were unnecessary (double albums pretty much have to have them, and they're often fluff), but now I love them and I feel they're all essential to the album's flow. And it's so huge! I didn't think an M83 album could possibly get any bigger. I'm actually afraid to see what he comes out with next.

The transitions really connect everything together. I love them. If you haven't noticed already, the transitions are all in the exact same spots on both discs. Each disc represents one of the two kids on the album cover, and they both mirror each other, sound wise, and structurally. Once I discovered this, I started listening to the album in an entirely different context and now I appreciate it even more than I already did.

Yeah the way the two discs mirror each other is literally explained by the track Mirror, which is a free downloadable thing that you're supposed to put in between Soon, My Friend and My Tears Are Becoming A Sea. (Why it wasn't included in the actual package is a frustrating mystery to me, however. Is it hidden somehow? Egghh.) But I didn't connect it to the two kids, I don't feel like one disc is more masculine or feminine than the other. But I did notice how impeccable the sequencing is - how the ballads (Wait and Splendor) are placed in the same slot, as well as both the epic climaxes of the album (Claudia Lewis and Steve McQueen), and the two instrumental transitions that lead to the finale on each disc (This Bright Flash > Soon, My Friend; Echoes of Mine > Outro). It's better and better the more I think about it.

you should DEF. see M83. with their newest material, they now have a good mix of shoegazey & dancey material, but all of still has a somewhat epic tilt to it, sorry if that sounds corny but it works. They are generally piano/synth based, but have a full band on stage and al play multiple instruments. Gonzalez has their female singer Morgan Kibby tour with them too, andher voice is beautiful, and she's real nice to look at from the neck down as well. See them now, b/c they're blowing up and will only be playing obnoxiously large venues from now on.

Start with Saturdays=Youth which is arguably their best. Then, if you're up to it, listen to Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (I say that because it's a double album and can be tough to digest for someone relatively new to M83). If you like that just keep working backward from there, in my opinion the quality of the music decreases as you go back chronologically. He's definitely improved his sound.

I listened to Midnight City the other day. That "tah-too-too-tah" thing was annoying as hell, but after the second listen, it became so damn catchy. I didn't listen to the rest of the album, but I did listen to Saturdays=Youth and liked it.

I have the Oblivion soundtrack. It's all right but there's a lot of repetition and not a lot of moments that stand out. Plus, it's kind of derivative of other scores as I read from the Pitchfork interview that the studio wanted a more traditional score rather than the kind of stuff M83 is known for. I think it's their weakest record so far.

Swykk
04-29-2013, 06:03 PM
That's because it's NOT an M83 record. It has one M83 song. There are interviews out where Gonzalez says the studio just wanted him because "Midnight City" was a huge hit. When he tried to do things that sounded more like "StarWaves" they'd say, "No no no. More like Zimmer or we can just get someone else."

Totally stuck on M83 at the moment, been listening to Saturdays, Hurry Up and Digital Shades constantly. Absolutely love them, wish I wasn't so late to the game. Random question, how come the first three records are so hard to come by? I can't find them to buy or download (legally and otherwise) anywhere, other than extortionate 2nd hand copies. Are they out of print or something?

Nope the only one that has potential to be out of print is the first self title album, but aside from Sitting, it's really not that great of an album. Dead Seas and Before The Dawn are both widely available. Before The Dawn might even be his best album.

Heard the new single a few times and not really a fan of this new sound. The whole thing is odd: Anthony Gonzalez has said the album was inspired by Punky Brewster and Who's the Boss. The album cover has what looks like McDonald's "Fry Guys" complete with a hamburger. Talk about 180.

Not sure how I feel about the song. Like, it's so oddball that I can't even grasp it enough yet to say whether I like it or not. The artwork is so hilariously bad, that I think it makes it harder to tell whether this song should even be taken seriously or not.

The whole thing just kind of feels like some weird prank, you know?

I'm really surprised by all the dislike here of "Do It, Try It" – it's definitely a departure from the last album, but I'm excited by that more than anything. M83's strength is obviously the shamelessly epic stuff, but Anthony's been doing that since Before the Dawn Heals Us, right? At this point, I'm totally down for a no-fucks-given LP (https://twitter.com/justinmj/status/704766392055275520), for better or worse.

JMJ produced again, and you can hear him and Anthony enjoying themselves, so I have a feeling that was a mandate they instilled (https://twitter.com/justinmj/status/705454444096282625) early on in the writing/recording.

Also, I'm crazy excited that M83 will be my first ever show at Red Rocks in May :D

It has leaked.

And it's not good.

The whole album is basically like, he took all the fun cheese factor from Midnight City and ramped it up to 15 while sucking all the joy and fun out of it, making something incredibly awkward and cringeworthy instead. Theres a handful of standout tracks, but for the most part, I honestly don't see myself coming back to this album.

Unbelievably huge let down of an album. Hopefully seeing M83 play these songs live will change my opinion on it? But I don't know. I don't see why anyone would want an entire album that sounds like the Whose The Boss theme.

M83's performance at Coachella was AWESOME (at least by watching it on the live youtube stream Friday night). They only played Do It, Try It & Go! from the new record b/c their set is shorter than their headline tour, but Go! at least worked really well live. Do It, Try It is still a pile of shit though. The older material (primarily Hurry Up... though) still kicks ass. Kaela Sinclair's voice is no joke....def. a solid replacement for Morgan Kibby. She can wail.

The vocoder on that song: perfection! Instant standout.

I'm loving the new album, and can't wait to crank it to deafening levels during many a summer drive. I know the warm weather will only make me love it more.

Finally got around to listening to Junk. The tracks that dial down the sugary sweetness just a bit are really good. I think it's a little too long though. Shave off tracks like Do It, Try It and a couple others, and you'd have something really good, but as it stands, you have something that doesn't quite work as a whole.

It's clearly their worst album, and thats including their sdtk work for me. I feel like even if you like it (and i hate it, although watching some of the songs live online they worked better), everyone acknowledges it's their worst release. I saw them at Bowery Ballroom in 2008 when they were touring Saturdays=Youth. It was incredible, at one of the best venues in the country.

Then I saw them November 2011 at Webster Hall right after Hurry Up, We're Dreaming came out. And that was practically a trascendental experience. Just completely epic night. The crowd was SO into the show, and it was great timing b/c you just felt the wave of how big that record was gonna get, and you were there right at the beginning of that journey.

the best show I saw them play was back around when I was 21 or so, and they were playing at this coffee shop at USC when I was a junior or something... and I kept trying to get my friends to go see this band called M83, and all of them were like "we're sick James, of you telling us to go to shows" and I was mad, angry that the show was about to happen at the stupid coffee shop... which was called Ground Zero, and this was before 9/11... and I was in the front row, of an audience of maybe 200 people, and I was screaming my head off, and they were covered in sweat by the end of the show. They owned it.

Good album, although I think it's maybe a little bit too sedate in the first half. You get this big explosion of energy with "Oceans Niagara", then it settles down for several tracks, which honestly blurred together for me. Maybe that was the intention, but I feel like it needed a little more "oomph" or at least more variation in the first half.

Earth To Sea has quickly become one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. That’s just a perfect song.

I’ve said it before but Gonzalez makes music that you’d hear whilst flying around on Falcor (the appropriately named Junk being an exception).

I have a mixed reaction to the set list so far. I kinda get why Gonzalez might not want to do a bunch from the albums Morgan Kibby was on; she has a distinct voice. Sucks that the albums she was on are the best ones, though.

I do love the new album, though, so I’m excited to hear the new songs aside from The Dismemberment Bureau.
