These feel less like Ghosts songs (experimental stuff) and more like some score outakes...some very VERY BEAUTIFUL score outtakes...i ADORE this so far! THIS IS JUST WHAT I'VE WANTED!

So many questions...
Who's willing to bet most of these tracks are outtakes from the scores? The Woman in the Window maybe?

Can I just say I never expected more installments of Ghosts? But god damn am I glad I was wrong.
Life's been a shitshow, for all of us I'd imagine, but god damn after my job closing down suddenly this week (which I moved across the country for) and knowing next week I'll be on the front lines at Amazon potentially risking my health and life and that of my husband just so we don't become homeless, I really needed some new NIN.
Idk if you're still lurking, but thanks.

Hey, Trent, Atticus,

Do you guys need some photography or album art?

With respect,

On a more realistic note, my favourite album series just got two more parts. I am absolutely ecstatic.
I've been recently listening to Ghosts I-IV on repeat, as I do each spring since release, this couldn't have had a better timing.

I find this really exciting.

I had been reflecting on how TR+frends would be experiencing the whole stay at home situation. Had a dream or two about it. these releases look like a guaranteed give you chills art creation

can't wait to digest these. new Ghosts, yes finally!!!!

my immediate feelings about the track names is, this is a spur of the moment release, and being ambiguous in times of worry is not fun. makes sense :)

Apologies for my MP3 comment. not ungrateful for them giving us free music at all. Would gladly pay for a lossless version.

Looking forward to giving this a listen and I assume a higher quality download will be available if there’s a physical release. Or a hi res stream on Amazon HD tomorrow.

If it makes a difference, all the tracks in Ghosts V: Together are tagged with the barcode 859738056342 and all the tracks in Ghosts VI: Locusts are tagged with barcode 859738055437. In addition to the fact they are two different zip files, with two different album covers, I take that to mean they're two separate releases, bundled together.

In all likelihood they'll be two separate releases on streaming sites, as well... ergo, two new halos.

2 hours and 33 minutes of NEW NIN FOR FREE. This is THE best thing to wake up to! Loving it so far, can't wait to see what Locusts has in store! And I'll gladly throw my money at a physical release as soon as it's available. I'm also wondering if half of this isn't the scrapped & possibly reworked Woman in the Window score like someone else mentioned. It wouldn't be a bad thing at all, in fact I was kinda hoping they'd release it somehow because it seems like a shame for anything they create to go unreleased!

I'm a tinnitus sufferer - as in ringing, not whooshing. Nothing leapt out as 'fuck that's fucking with my ears' - I was fine with it! But then I am working so it's not on too loud....

Man. I needed this today.

As I'm sure with everyone, it's been a rollercoaster of a year. My Mom has been in and out of the hospital since October of last year dealing with the side effects of her terminal cancer and kidney dialysis treatments, I'm planning a wedding this fall and took on a higher work capacity at my job.

However, this COVID-19 stuff has me stressed with all of the above factors. I worry about my Mom's health (she just got back from the hospital after a two week stay and had to go back in after she fell at home and now has pneumonia), I worry about the wedding expenses and even being able to HAVE it this fall and to be as vague as possibly—my work is feeling the affects of the pandemic we're in.

New music from Trent makes me feel a part of this little community of all of you that I don't always check in with as much as I should, but reminds me of good times in my life. Shit, I can't believe I've been coming here since 2004 ... I'm sure it's been longer for most of you.

Anywho, I'm done ranting. This was a nice surprise and something to keep my mind occupied while working remote for the foreseeable future and we get through all this together.

However, platforms that do are notably more expensive, and given that this release is free, hang tight.

"Please keep in mind these files are not directly available on your phone or mobile device. You will need to download to a computer first. At that point you can un-zip the files and then transfer them to your media player of choice."

If anyone wants to listen to it on their phone (and they have Android), download from Google Play an app such as AndroZip. After downloading the albums, find your download folder in your phone via AndroZip, and extract it. Then play it with a music app such as Winamp or VLC Media Player (I had to put the files in my phone's "Music" folder for Winamp to detect it, and VLC kept crashing on me this morning for no reason strangely).

Echoing the "I needed this today" statements in the thread. I've been completely and totally paranoid for the last two weeks and the heightened emotional state is wearing on me. BUT: this was wonderful news to wake up to. I'm almost done with "Together" and it's beautiful. The sun came out here (finally) so I think we are gonna listen to this in the backyard for a while. Also, the track titles for "Locusts" are making me think I should wait on that section to not further my plague paranoia.

Almost done making in through Ghosts V, this is probably my favorite instrumentals/scores that's been released in a while! Listening to Hope We Can right now, I love the analog sounds, mixed with the atmospheric noise (gives that AATCHB/Still vibe to me), it sounds more organic and I get lost in it, more so than some of the more synth/electronic heavy tracks. Still love those! But for "music to day dream to" (as he quoted the Ghosts album in the past), this is perfect!

I'm sure Ghosts VI is a different ride all together...we'll see!

I would love for bands to do this with stuff that the labels said would never be "successful" so remain unreleased, that way the fire that took everything from so many artists wouldn't have been as much of an issue. I mean, we'll never hear a ton of music from a lot of influential artists now because of that, whether it's actual albums or what have you.

I had the exact same feeling, so I did some research.
Even though I don't have a definitive answer, the closest I got was this intro that was played live for La Mer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLFUKBWyves

The notes are fairly similar. It also reminded me of Leaving Hope and AATCHB.

That said, Together also has lots of influences from the recent scores, in particular: The Light Shines Through from Waves; the ending from Absent Friends and Old Ghosts (Watchmen Vol.1); Close Encounters/ And It Keeps On Coming (Bird Box).

I'm not the biggest follower by any means but always thought the title of GHOSTS was implying that the tracks were unused/rescued, scraps/bits, of unfinished/rejected works. A lot of the cues several posters have brought up about this new set leads one to think this might be true. Am I out of the loop and/or this is now common knowledge? Just blue-skying.

Funny thing, I was still hearing the unpleasant frequency even when the next song started, only then I realized maybe it's just me?, so I tried to walk away, drink water, and yep it thankfully stopped. Sometimes I have a little bit of these, nothing to see the doctor with, so this was strange experience. I much prefer The Background World to this, thank you. :-)

Some of the best instrumental stuff since TGWDTD for me. Other than TF deviations, obviously, but that's a bit different.

Only about 70% through, but I already like it more than most of the work released since HM. Admittedly, I've only given some of that soundtrack work a shallow listen - I plan to dive deeper, but haven't had the enthusiasm from what I've heard from each release. I only listen to a few select tracks from the EP trilogy, small releases are quick to burn out, and there were a few tracks that I just didn't like.

This is (and sounds) excellent. Maybe it'll reignite the NIN spark I've kinda lost. I've been listening to a lot of other new stuff for a while (I'm obsessed with Babymetal). I used to spin TF a few times daily for over a decade, along with the other classic NIN stuff, maybe my brain also forced me to phase it out for a while without me realizing too. Some of the tracks give me a classic Doom feel, or (even though I can't make this make sense) at least something related to demons/hell.

Gorgeous.

I’m on ‘V’ and I’m absolutely loving it so far. It’s much more thorough and complete sounding than the original ‘Ghosts’ releases. I’m having the same problem with ‘Hope We Can Again’. The middle is more or less unlistenable, which is a shame since the beginning and end are beautiful.

I agree, I only got halfway through Ghosts V (damn conference calls), but this is much more enjoyable to me than Ghosts I-IV (sorry if this offends the die-hard Ghosts fans). This may be due to an emotional association, so there's some bias there sure. Right now it's just....comforting with all this bullshit going on. I think this may end up being the soundtrack of my life in this current era. Hopefully 10 years down the road this music will remind me of this bizarre time.

Agreed! But seriously, what the fuck, I already "paid" for this free music. When will I actually be able to download it?

I like the idea and duality of "I know I'm not alone" in times like these.

Stuck on "Authorizing Payment" page too? NIN.com hates me. Been trying to get an answer about my Vietnam soundtrack download for months now.

Hey Jon, you used to have fonts for Ghosts I - IV, correct?

NINGhosts font (NINGhostsLight and NINGhostsLightCaps).

Still have it?

I no longer have that big Ghosts archive that I did. The fonts were grabbed from someone else on the board at the time.

I can generate partial families using FontForge, but there are characters missing and the re-encode options don't look similar at all.

Here in Europe both albums are now up on Spotify.
Interesting to note that two songs titles are all in caps. What if these two are Watchmen outtakes? Those tracks were all in caps, too.

Listened to both albums on and off all day, especially Together on heavier rotation...

It's really beautiful work, but I'll be honest, it got me really sad. I've been really careful not to let my emotions get away from me, and I kinda let my guard down, and this soundscape got me in a little bit of a depressed mood. I had to put on some Pet Shop Boys and shit like that to drag me back
It's too perfect of a soundtrack to the end of the world.

Listened to V and on first listen I'm already really enjoying it. It hits a lot harder emotionally than Ghosts I-IV and is uplifting and calming/comforting in a strange way. I feel like TR/AR almost made this for their kids to play as calming going to sleep music. Super excited for the next part!

I haven't yet had a chance to dig into this yet but what I've heard on Together has been amazing. Thank you, teitan and Atticus, if you're lurking. I had a suspicion, at some point, you guys were going to drop some new stuff out of the blue but I had no idea it would be two-and-a-half-plus hours and certainly not for free. Many thanks!

Now let's check "Ghosts VI"...

My speculation is that Together was the big reveal from SXSW that was cancelled. I don't doubt that Locusts was recorded more recently.

Listened to both and just finished listening to Together again. I'm in a weird, somewhat discomfited position right now because I'm not sure exactly how I feel about these! They occupy a very different place from typical Nine Inch Nails material, or Trent and Atticus's scores. Hell, they represent something entirely different than even the previous Ghosts release, despite the titles implying some sort of continuity. Beyond being instrumental releases, they are nothing alike. Ghosts I-IV had only numbers for track titles, but even still, each track had such a specific identity that I can remember each just from its number. But V and VI are so much more loose and long-form, with the style and tone way more consistent throughout even between the two specifically differentiated albums. Almost every track becomes a hazy landscape of sound that is explored obsessively before seamlessly bleeding into the next. It's background music, far more so than any of their soundtracks have ever been (though perhaps Waves, which I'm waiting to see before listening to the music, fits that bill). Every time new NIN is released I give it a dedicated listen (it's practically a religious ritual) and I felt so weird and deflated after listening to these in that context because they were basically designed for the exact opposite purpose. I'd go as far as saying Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts are the first truly ambient Nine Inch Nails albums.

It represents terrific work from the two, but its presence for me is felt much more tonally and emotionally than musically. Ninety percent of Ghosts V-VI is slow, depressive music (usually based around a trudging piano melody) with minute variations and little-to-no percussion over double-digit track lengths. Track to track, it conjures powerful feelings but musically has not lit up my brain and does not instill in me the kind of obsessive desire to listen again and again that their work always has in the past, whether it's Nine Inch Nails or score material. In that sense, I can't help but feel kind of disappointed, because I'm so used to their music imprinting itself on me in a way I feel may not happen with these albums. But in these awful, terrifying times, I am grateful that my favorite artists are sharing so much material with us for free, and the sentiment of their message and intent is remarkably moving.

As an artistic piece of work, this far surpasses the first volumes of Ghosts. Those are a collection of off-cuts, samples, leavings and left over ideas that didn't make the cut. Brilliant though it was, it was never an album for me.

V & VI are more complete pieces of work. Worthy of listening to in order (Old school style. Headphones on. Crossed legged. Analyzing the album art).

It was one of the only comments on the ninhotline facebook, when i saw the album announcement

I don't know anything about "The Woman in the Window" at all I don't usually venture into those threads any more, but having listened to these with the idea that they may be a soundtrack in mind... It didn't *feel* like their soundtracks exactly. It felt like Ghosts with direction.

Trent described it as avant-garde and Locusts could fit that bill. Could. I don't speak with any knowledge or authority, just noticed the similarity with how it lined up with how I would imagine that score could sound.

Well, I think I did it right today.

My first listen to Together was while driving around through deserted Kansas City soaking up the weirdness of an empty city at rush hour.

I waited until late to listen to Locusts. I've got all the windows open, lights off, couple of candles burning, thunder storm poppin' off outside, and I can't help but both albums were introduced to me in extremely fitting ways today.

What a time to be alive.

EXTREMELY into this. Thank you so much, TR&AR.

I prefer Locusts too, by far.
As of now I think comparing TR/AR's score work and NIN instrumentals are pointless, maybe aside from Watchmen.
I for one sure can't notice any differences, probably because movies are usually not my thing.
If one of the Bad Witch instrumentals were included in Locusts I sure couldn't tell. Bird Box could've been Ghosts V/VI.

See, I have this thing where I can't REALLY get into the score work, because it's made to fit someone else's vision.
And that's funny, because it doesn't change the sound of the music.
It's all in the presentation and perception, I guess, for me.

One more thought after listening to this... remember the Ghosts Film Fest that never was? With all the empty city streets thers's lots of oppertunity to capture some great footage for a Ghosts V-VI Film Fest.
