Poor lil' guy misread the bill. He thought it eliminated all rape allegations against him.

You would think this Iran shit would help the Dems out, but old man Biden is gonna get the nomination, and we will get 4 more years of Trump and its going to take the economy crashing again and 10k+ dead troops before people finally wake up and realize supporting any Republican for president is in reality supporting the same old shit they have always stood for. Big business, the ultra wealthy, pro war, voter suppression, less rights for us and more rights for special interests. (just like in 2004).

America is guilty of everything we accuse Iran of doing (https://theweek.com/articles/887283)

I'd ask that anyone who wants to downvote this at least take the time to read the article and share their reasons for disagreeing with it.

The piece isn't meant to diminish the severity of what Trump has done, or the moronic and potentially illegal way in which he did it (still haven't read anything conclusive sounding; just lots of speculation). It's instead meant to acknowledge that we are not exactly the spotless knights in shining armor that we like to claim we are, especially when it comes to our very own presidents and other high-ranking officials.

You would think this Iran shit would help the Dems out

Sadly, it's the kinda thing that always helps the Republicans. Democrats are always seen weak when it comes to wars, Obama could only sneak in because the crashing economy overshadowed our ongoing wars.
Every time the conversation shifts to homeland security, the Dems lose. Like now, they're all running on domestic issues, and if we go into war over this airstrike then Trump will surely be reelected (I'll be so happy to be wrong tho!!!)

And speaking of the airstrike: the WH says that they stopped an imminent, grave attack on American citizens. Can we see the receipts?! I think we have the right to know what it was, and to make sure it wasn't just made up, vague threat (which it will turn out to be).
We already know that this attack wasn't going to be on American soil, but in the Middle East.

Thanks for the link, more people need to read this, facts are facts.

Yet even the worst of Soleimani's record pales in comparison with the most blood-drenched American warmongers. If Soleimani deserves condemnation for arming Iraqi insurgents, then George W. Bush and Dick Cheney deserve 10 times as much for starting the war in the first place. It was a pointless, illegal war of aggression sold on lies that obliterated Iraqi society and killed perhaps half a million people, almost all of them innocent civilians. (Our own Soleimani, General David Petraeus, was connected to the operation of Iraqi torture dungeons and paramilitary death squads during the fight against the insurgency.)

If Soleimani deserves blame for helping Bashar al-Assad brutally defeat Syrian rebels, Henry Kissinger deserves 10 times as much for orchestrating the bombing slaughter of perhaps a quarter million Cambodians and paving the way for the Khmer Rouge genocide that killed 1.7 million people.

If any accused war criminal at an airport is fair game, then there are a lot of people in D.C. and Northern Virginia who better start traveling by train or ship.

Indeed, the Quds Force itself was originally created during the Iran-Iraq War, which was started by a heavily U.S.-backed Saddam Hussein in 1980. A million Iranians died in the grueling eight-year conflict. And the reason the Islamic Republic exists in the first place is because the United States and Britain toppled Iran's fledgling democracy in 1953 and installed a brutal dictator.

It is not exactly hard to understand why Iran — like about every other country in the Middle East — keeps some brutal, hard people like Soleimani around. It's a violent, unstable neighborhood, and war is an unavoidable reality. And no country is more responsible for that fact than the United States.

Attacking Iran has been Bolton’s wet dream since 1979. This is his porno. Trump has delivered the goods to Bolton. Bolton knows that the Senate won’t call witnesses, so this is empty bullshit. Parnas unleashed a slew of new accusations against the president, including that he, as a representative of Trump, gave Ukrainian officials a “very harsh message” that the U.S. would cut off all aid to the country if it did not announce an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden (https://thehill.com/people/joe-biden).“The message was: It wasn’t just military aid. It was all aid,” he told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow (https://thehill.com/people/rachel-maddow). “Basically the relationship would be sour. We would stop giving them any kind of aid.”

Many Trumpers are claiming that this is the Dem’s evil plan. (“Coup.”)

Technically, it’s likely to be possible only if the Pres and VP die in a plane crash or something. Because, as what happened with Agnew and then Nixon, the impeachment process is separate; if Trump gets removed or resigns, the VP immediately becomes President and selects a new VP. If Pence is then impeached and removed, Pence’s VP becomes President.

With Nixon, Agnew resigned and then Nixon made Ford his new VP, then Nixon resigned, then Ford became President (and he was not elected at all).

If that was what Parnas was willing to give up during the first part of the interview, I wonder what the second part has in store. Also, he is calculating and careful. If this is what he's willing to talk about, imagine everything he actually knows. He is smart enough to hang on to critical information to save himself later.

I totally expected the lawyer to interject and shut down answers the entire time, and he never did. Fucking incredible.

We are unbelievably fortunate to have Rachel Maddow right now.

Please someone tell me if I'm misunderstanding, but Dershowitz's argument seems to boil down to:

1: What Trump did wasn't bad enough to merit impeachment because "misdemeanors" is ill-defined, and:
2: Well, other Presidents have been accused of abuse of power but you didn't impeach them, huh.

Both of these are really weak. Relying on semantics and such.

Edit: He's also arguing that it's cool he's changed his mind about all this in the past 20 years, because nothing matters anyway except the inexorable slide unto heat death.

This has gotten very scary. Dershowitz has argued that Trump can do whatever he wants if it's in the service of winning re-election, under the assumption this is in the public interest (https://www.politico.com/news/2020/01/29/impeachment-q-and-a-moments-that-mattered-109272). He's backtracked on Twitter and claimed his comments have been distorted by the EVIL FAKE MEDIA, however it's likely given republicans (those who don't think he went too far) an excuse to rally behind.

Which means when Trump is acquitted, he'll be able to cite this in future wrongdoing. It would also seemingly un-impeach Nixon.

The lab noted that acid phosphatase activity, a “presumptive indication of the presence of semen,” was not detected.

Not sure what that means to a civil case. Men don’t always ejaculate when they sexually assault.

Probably moot, because Trump isn’t ever gonna give up his DNA.

Sounds right. But, if there were enough skin cells to get a DNA sample (which you need a fair amount for if you don't have semen), that would confirm he was awfully up close and personal. It could have been saliva as well.

I think for prosecuting logistics it has to be voluntary or court ordered. Sure, you could nab a sample and confirm, but you couldn't prosecute unless it was done according to procedure.

Even if they had a full DNA match, they couldn't prosecute because the statute of limitations has passed i think. Could be wrong though.

This isn’t a criminal suit.

Even with civil, DNA (or ANY discovery) must be court-ordered (meaning: parties request it but then the court approves it and then orders it).

They couldn’t even arrest him because of the old statute (pre 2006, see link below).

DNA doesn’t help prosecution “logistics.” It just helps (or doesn’t) convince a jury. OJ Simpson, for instance.

Juries are the key in both criminal and civil. Except criminals have the option of a bench trial in criminal. But I digress.

This particular case is a defamation case.

I literally never used the phrase "prosecuting logistics." I was just pointing out that they could not prosecute (criminal charges) because of the statute of limitations. However, I did see that they extended the statute of limitations for certain instances of sexual assault in New york in 2019, so I'm not sure of the qualifications for that.

Adam Schiff is speaking to the world's biggest echo chamber. No one who needs to HEAR his words is listening. Everyone who is thirsty for justice is just being told what they already know.

No respect for her at all. I fully believe what I've been reading - whether it's called this or not - regarding her getting a "hall pass". The gist of it: party leadership knows that some of their own are on thin ice and might need to break ranks in order to save their own asses. So once leadership KNOWS that they have all the votes they need, they give permission to those who need it and allow them to break ranks without immediately turning on them and torching their careers.

Fuck Susan Collins and every GOP senator.

Meanwhile, grown ups, people with jobs will just roll their eyes and vote for whoever is running against them, just because they are sick of this childish behavior.

Stole millions from charity. Bragged about sexually assaulting women. Broke election laws by paying a pornstar to not talk about fucking him (while his wife was pregnant too, if I recall). Has called for the lynching of African American citizens who were acquitted. Gets into playground bully fights on Twitter with world leaders. Created a fake school to scam millions out of naive students. Pays doctors to lie about his health. Stiffs the people he hires to work for him and doesn’t pay for the jobs they complete. He lies constantly. Partly because he's dishonest and only cares about himself and his family's wealth, real or perceived. The other times he just makes shit up because he doesn't know shit about shit so he wings it. Or he regurgitates literal conspiracies / propaganda he hears on Fox News, sometimes verbatim. Literally. Some of the batshit things he tweets can be traced back to a Fox News segment 10 or 15 minutes prior. This is the type of shit we expect from Chuck Woolery or James Woods...not from the President of the fucking United States.

He was a main antagonist with the birther conspiracy. He's used his presidency to undo Obama's legacy for spite. It's deranged.

Scumbag is too polite a descriptor.

There are many groups doing fact checking on his claims. This breakdown (https://www.politifact.com/personalities/donald-trump/) seems pretty digestible and backed up by research. I haven't read about the SoTU analysis (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/02/04/fact-checking-president-trumps-2020-state-union-address/) yet, but I've no doubt the claims followed a similar bell curve centering around mostly false.

The problem is his base takes everything he says as fact. If they were facts perhaps you're right he's great and there's no prejudice. Unfortunately, it seems much more likely that he is propping those people up as examples of how he's helped certain demographics that may be helpful in the election. All presidents have done this, but it seems particularly disingenuous coming from him.

Trump is a scumbag for a litany of reasons. For instance, Reason number 136 is that he took out a one page op ed saying that the Central Park Five should be executed. They were later acquitted due to DNA evidence and someone confessing to the crime (whose DNA matched the crime scene.) Trump still refuses to admit that it was a mistake to jail them as teenagers and will still say that they were bad people.

It kind of blows my mind that reporting on facts (like Trump's lies, which are factual) is somehow demonstrative of being liberal media, or fake news, or even merely leaning to a certain side... but I guess that's the current state of where we've ended up.

Listening to Trump talk and the things he says is very inspiring. He recognized several people in the audience and seems to have no prejudice against race or gender in regards to the recognition and the accomplishments made over the past 3 years.

So... I watched it and think to myself wow what an amazing country and president.

Are all of the statements and facts he said lies? And why is Trump such a "scumbag"?

So, what did we learn about the GOP yesterday? If the Kavanaugh shitstorm apparently didn't make it obvious, 99% of the GOP voting to let Trump off should pretty much spell out that they're going to stick up for Trump no matter what. No matter what evidence pops up, the most of them are simply going to keep pretending it isn't there. We need to make sure to flip the Senate in November because that's pretty much the only way any meaningful progress can be made now.

Sent out a feeler on Facebook the other day to see if any of my friends could offer a justification for last week's events (Rush medal, firings). The only reply I got was (and I quote, grammar and all): "read the news thats how I found out ;)"

I guess that's a no then. (Guy who posted it is a die-hard Trumper who, when we were on business in Asia, was all too keen to brag about how we have this fantastic president who loves to make fun of losers, "and we call those losers Democrats". I hate that I have to rely on the guy's unparalleled expertise in his technical field in order to get out of jams once in a great while.)

I think it's pretty clear what they're setting up here. It can go one of two ways and neither are good for the rule of law:

1. Judge issues lenient sentence based on updated DOJ recommendations. Trump knows a Stone pardon will look like shit to everyone but his base. This is a way to put his foot on the scale for ol Roger while not issuing a pardon.

2. (More likely) Judge Jackson says "Fuck you" and ignores DOJ's request...and to that, on Nov 3, Trump issues a pardon saying the judge was too harsh and unfair.

Edit: the lead prosecutor in the case just withdrew from the case and resigned. Hopefully things start to get loud.

I'm thinking this is probably how it will play out. Regardless of the pardon, which is almost guaranteed to happen no matter what, it'll still be good to have it officially on record of the judge doing (hopefully) what's right in this situation and blast the shit out of the administration in her ruling.

Actually, in law, it's typically the crazy right-wing people who think that this should be a 9-year sentence. Liberals typically want sentence reform and tend to argue that most sentences (except for the most egregious crimes to society) do not deserve these longer sentences.

NOBODY in law thought this should be a 9-year sentence.

In these types of non-violence cases, the prosecution ALWAYS throws the worst sentence out there, fully knowing they're NEVER going to get it. It's always a bullshit high number.

The PROBLEM arose when Trump TWEETED about it, thereby sticking his nose where it fully DID NOT BELONG, now looking like he was influencing the sentence when he most likely ISN'T. The JUDGE decides sentencing; not the prosecutors, not the DoJ, not the President.

But, the President should NEVER render public opinion about ANY case.

He's such an IDIOT, however, he's saying he has the "right" to say whatever he wants.

Barr is saying "no, you do not, because it's looking like you're interfering with justice."

Of course, Trump just brushes Barr aside, and then ... yeah, whatever.

Meanwhile, Trump insulted the JUDGE in this case and now everybody on the right has a conspiracy theory against the head juror. So, who knows what will happen.

But, he IS the Attorney General, which is the head of the Department of Justice. Which is the parent agency of the F.B.I. and every single other Federal criminal and investigative department in the United States.

While I'm never in the habit of defending Trump, Blago's 14-year sentence was RIDICULOUS. Blago attempted the shakedown, but none of it actually happened. Blago's a total dickhead, sure. (And I voted for him, twice, ugh.)

Some perspective:

Former Illinois Governor George Ryan, indicted on multiple counts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Ryan#Indictment), was found guilty on all counts.

These charges stemmed from an investigation of the sale of commercial driver's licenses to unqualified people (bribes), after a family inside of a van was hit by a driver carrying one of those driver's licenses.

All six of the children inside of the van were killed in the crash (burned to death).

Pandering to Trump’s imaginary swing voters in the Midwest.

Note that Republicans have been telling Trump NOT to commute Blago’s sentence.

FWIW: An 8- or 9-year sentence was beyond appropriate for Blagojevich. He tried shaking down a children’s hospital. The guy’s a jerk. But 14 years was a “message” to Illinois Governors to knock that shit off. 4 of the last 7 Illinois Governors have gone to prison.

There is a lot of misinformation floating out there regarding my meeting with Julian Assange so let me provide some clarity on the matter:

At no time did I talk to President Trump about Julian Assange. Likewise, I was not directed by Trump or anyone else connected with him to meet with Julian Assange. I was on my own fact finding mission at personal expense to find out information I thought was important to our country. I was shocked to find out that no other member of Congress had taken the time in their official or unofficial capacity to interview Julian Assange. At no time did I offer Julian Assange anything from the President because I had not spoken with the President about this issue at all. However, when speaking with Julian Assange, I told him that if he could provide me information and evidence about who actually gave him the DNC emails, I would then call on President Trump to pardon him. At no time did I offer a deal made by the President, nor did I say I was representing the President. Upon my return, I spoke briefly with Gen. Kelly. I told him that Julian Assange would provide information about the purloined DNC emails in exchange for a pardon. No one followed up with me including Gen. Kelly and that was the last discussion I had on this subject with anyone representing Trump or in his Administration.

Even though I wasn't successful in getting this message through to the President I still call on him to pardon Julian Assange, who is the true whistleblower of our time. Finally, we are all holding our breath waiting for an honest investigation into the murder of Seth Rich.

Seth Rich's family has repeatedly asked that they stop peddling and retract this shit. And they're still doing it - over three years later.

It’s true, he spent like 30 minutes on his porch talking and acting like he was a victim. He was not one bit contrite. He was back to being that Governor we in Illinois knew: long on a memorized speech, and short on self-observation. You’d think he was campaigning, again. He DID do some good stuff for the citizens of Illinois. Free and $2 RTA cards that still exist because of him still make him a hero among minorities and seniors. But, the guy thinking he’s some victim of political persecution is lacking any self-responsibility.

Of course, Trump could pardon Stone tomorrow before Stone sets one foot into prison, but that would mean Stone is forever strapped with the "convicted felon" tag. Him & his admin use the act of just trying to fuck with & anger their opposition as the main basis for their policy decisions. It's infuriating. But it was to be expected b/c that trolling aspect is literally the main reason a vast majority of his base voted for him in the first place. They just want to fuck with libs. Disgusting people.

Weird that this dude is still trying to compete with COVID-19 for attention.

There should really only be one thing anyone is focused on right now, and that's stopping the spread of COVID-19. Who cares what some crazy old jackass says at this point?

It kind of outweighs any hysteria he might try to produce.

I saw a clip the other day of Bush Jr. talking about the need to be prepared for a pandemic situation in 2005. I had thought he was the worst president ever at the time but the Donald has made him look Mt Rushmore worthy. I didn't care for Bush policies but I never felt the loathing I feel for the current situation. If Obama had been accused a fraction of the stuff Trump has done there would've been crosses burning on the white house lawn with people in MAGA hats roasting weenies around them while they got ready for the lynching. I had to quit watching the daily CNN shit show with the task force. I get the important stuff later. I know there are a lot of stupid people out there but for the love of God, how is this guy in power? & in position to possibly stay there? sorry, had to vent.

Had a nightmare last night that Trump won the election this year, did the 4 years, and a month after the 2024 election he died. The nightmare part was that a) he was still president and b) he died AFTER his second presidency and not during it (though I hate wishing death on people...Trump is an exception)

04-09-2020, 07:20 PM
Technically a month after the 2024 election is about a month and a half before inauguration day, the election would be somewhere between November 2 and November 8, inauguration day would be January 20 of the next year.</that_guy>

I was thinking about the ratings thing last night. I remember years ago when the cable news people harped about the ratings of shows on the other networks. It sounded petty at the time and it's especially petty now but it's something that has been talked about on political shows for a long time - I mean, Keith Olbermann was still on the air feuding with Bill O'Reilly! - so I think it's ingrained in political minds because of this and ratings mean something to a lot of people and for the wrong reasons to be sure.
