I think it's easy to make fun of the situation of the past few days right now, but we should be honest: this could have ended very, very badly. We're fortunate that it didn't.

LOVE. IT.

"Just because you've left the DC region you can still expect a knock on the door if we find out you were part of the criminal activity at the Capitol," said Steven D'Antuono, assistant director in charge of the FBI's Washington field office.
"The FBI is not sparing any resources in this investigation," he said.

And I guess it's a little ironic that many of them will be easier to identify because they weren't wearing masks.

Exactly. And it is yet another example of these people's bizarre entitlement syndrome. Remember a few years back when gay marriage was legalized and they didn't want gay people buying fucking wedding cakes? "JEBUS don't like it so we can't sell no cakes to no gays. It's the owners right if they don't want to. Stop infringing on my freedom to practice a hate crime." And now it's "WHAT?!?!? Tweeter b-b-banned trump? :( They have not no right. How dare a company do whatever the fuck they want with their own platform and ban a man from trying to end democracy."

I just woke up to video on t.v. of these fuckheads trying to break a police line and smother a cop in the process. The very same cops they claim to care about so much every time a bad acting cop kills an innocent minority and they want to excuse it away.

No wonder they don't believe in science. When you don't have the cognitive ability to see the dissonance happening here and the flaws in the logic of your ideology, I mean I'm surprised they can even tie their shoes without mixing up which shoe is left and right.

There just isn't any hope.

Someone said something on the socials that made a lot of sense about this, it's not that they believe it, it's that they're told by their others (idiots spreading misinformation for likes) TO believe it, and they won't question it.

Just look at the latest thing on Parler (the RW soical site) one of the official people on there told their followers the app was in danger so they need to share their mobile numbers and emails (i do not know why) and en mass they ALL POSTED THEIR PERSONAL INFOMATION. They are so without a thought of their own they effectively doxed themselves. I bet if a few of these people actually took a step back and looked at what they are doing they might realize "hold on...this isn't right" It's actually crazy!

Very brave of social media to back out from the man who is about to lose all of his power and relevancy in a few days, but they had absolutely no problem with him whatsoever in the last 4/5 years and gladly profited off of him while providing a platform for him. It doesn't bode well for the people if society actually welcomes this instead of calling them out on it.

that video montage from the Chris Hayes segment is actually authentically disturbing. The part where the officer is screaming and crying in pain and begging for help while he's being crushed in the doorway... that shook me up just now. Amidst all the ridiculousness, like the guy with the stupid viking helmet, it's probably really important to remember that what happened here was at its core haunting, and just because a lot of these people are loony tunes goofballs actually makes it worse; it's like The Wicker Man. This guy is horrified, probably thinking he's about to die, screaming in pain, and over here is this fuckhead wearing a stupid hat w/ facepaint and a vaguely Conan the Barbarian outfit. It's really the stuff of nightmares.

No, unfortunately, Trump can pardon them now before charges are brought.

Jimmy Carter pardoned all Vietnam draft dodgers and most of them had never been charged.

When a gang leader is put in jail but is found to still be controlling the gang from jail, they move the gang leader and cut off all communication.

That’s what is happening, here.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we find out that the FBI told Twitter to cut off Trump’s account.

His cult takes everything he says literally, and the FBI is still finding evidence of additional attacks planned for the 17th and 19th, at least. They have to cut off communication from Trump wherever possible, although he’s likely still sending out emails.

Apparently Pence hasn't ruled it out:

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/09/politics/mike-pence-25th-amendment/index.html

He's also worried about what Trump might do when he's impeached again next week.

I mean, with him off social media, as soon as the 25th was invoked, the damage he could do would be limited somewhat. You'd need to have every law enforcement agency in the country on high alert, but it's probably safer than letting him stay president.

I kind of understand the concern about what he might do to retaliate.

Social media all did move in a co-ordinated fashion. Facebook wasn't his primary and that left first. Then twitter, while Apple and Google pulled (or warned) parler at the same time.

I don't know US laws well enough to know, but it seems possible that these things were co-ordinated by one (or more) of the intelligence agencies, closing a net around him to limit the damage he can do before they remove him and charge him.

You gather evidence before you charge someone with something. While what happened on Wednesday was extremely obviously caused by him, it would help to have evidence gathered by confessions from those who broke in, and collected from their phones and computers.

The overhead photo of that officer on the ground while that crowd is bludgeoning him is ... ugh. :(

I’m still just so sickened by all this, now mostly because so many in Congress are afraid to hold Trump accountable.

He WILL be held accountable, but it’s so disheartening that only a few Republicans have a spine.

This IS NOT partisan. That mob came in there looking to kill people. They were there to commit an insurrection, nothing else. They weren’t tourists. Congress members called family, fearing they may not live through the siege. I just don’t get how these Republicans are blowing this off.

How many DAYS ago were we listening to a recording of Trump harassing Georgia’s Secretary of State? Are these Republicans hoping everyone will just move on and forget this, too?

Why should we or would we do that?

I feel like this is really true right now:

Honestly, I think the reason a lot of people on the right are so complicit at this point is they know they’re dealing with a bunch of unhinged, pissed cult members. One of the people who ran in the Capitol had a fistful of zip tie handcuffs. The crowd at one point was chanting some shit about lynching Mike Pence.

and this is all the GOP’s fault. They created this monster, let it grow, and when it started to get out of hand they defended its behavior. Now it is holding them all hostage

From Day One at the Trump White House, up has been down, yes has been no, failure has been success. Sean Spicer set the tone with the inauguration crowd size – the worst kind of whopper, as it demanded that people disbelieve their own eyes. The next day, Kellyanne Conway defended Spicer’s lie with a new term, “alternative facts.” Spicer’s successor, Sarah Huckabee Sanders lied at scale, from smearing those who accused Trump of sexual harassment to conjuring jobs statistics. Her successor, Stephanie Grisham, over the course of a year, never even held a press conference, though the BS continued unabated across friendly outlets. And finally, Kayleigh McEnany, Harvard Law graduate, a propaganda prodigy at 32 who makes smiling falsehood an art form

Let it be known to the business world: Hire any of Trump’s fellow fabulists above, and Forbes will assume that everything your company or firm talks about is a lie. We’re going to scrutinize, double-check, investigate with the same skepticism we’d approach a Trump tweet. It’s just a realization that, as Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said, in a thriving democracy, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts. Our national reset starts there.

I made one trolly comment telling people on there to fuck off and then deleted my account, but really, I hope I'm not tossed into some massive doxxing data breach "fuck you" gesture

I doubt they're looking for you. As long as you didn't provide phone number, address, etc I think you're fine. Bonus points for the "verified citizens" who uploaded both sides of their driver's license. LOL.

Weird posts from another forum.

OP: The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in line to the Presidency were at serious risk. 2 and 3 would probably have died if the mob had not been stopped. This was intentionally provoked by Trump to maintain power. The goal was likely Pence dies, it’s blamed on antifa, and Trump enacts martial law, and declares the election invalid.
He cannot get away with this.

Reply 1: Let’s not forget he pardoned Flynn who stated martial law should be in place and we then have a do over on the election. They want conspiracy theories but don’t question the obvious: TRUMP WAS SETTING THIS UP A WHILE BACK. Take a look at what his buddy Putin and Ergodan have done.

Reply 2: It absolutely was. Someone on Twitter who studies hate groups and has infiltrated their message boards, had screen grabs outlining this exact scenario. Lots of cryptic language, too, as they tried to be somewhat coded in their messaging but even a clueless layperson like me got the gist. What’s so crazy/fascinating to me is how they would analyze every word of Trump’s tweets for secret messages. It explains Trump’s panic at losing his account. Sure he has other ways to communicate with the public but he clearly is more interested in a very specific audience.

You had to give them your phone number and a verifiable email address to even look at the page... so yeah, it was a stupid thing to do, but they needed this two step verification bullshit that was actually really invasive. Pretty sure I used a burner junk email and a fake name and info, but still... And so yeah of course they got hacked. I made one post on there mocking Dinesh D'Souza and then deleted my account. Hopefully that actually scrubbed it from their servers, but that's really unlikely.

Honestly, I barely remember. I made the account kind of casually, barely thinking about it. I didn't really realize how crazy it was going to be. One of the reasons I immediately deleted my account (the same day I made it) was I read some of the shit people were saying on there, and realized "Holy shit! If this site gets hacked, I do not want ANY of my personal data to be found anywhere near this crazy shit."

Re impeachment:

While it’s likely that Democrats would not gather a full majority in the Senate to convict (especially by January 20th to remove), it’s entirely possible for Democrats to gather enough votes to obtain a simple majority AFTER Trump is out of office that bars him from office in the future, which is the only other remedy for impeachment:

https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/national-politics/can-a-president-be-impeached-after-he-leaves-office-and-what-penalty-would-he-face-if-convicted

Anything to meaningfully punish his incitement of insurrection and further tarnish his shameful legacy, as well as discourage any like-minded politician(s) from trying to emulate his behavior in the future is absolutely worthwhile, IMO.

My understanding is that if he is convicted, it also has the following bonuses:
• He loses his 200k+ pension for the rest of his life
• He loses his $1M/year travel allowance (according to the link @eskimo (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=218) posted below, this may not be true)
• And perhaps most importantly, he loses his ability to run again in 2024. (again, according to the link below, this may require an additional vote)

Contrary to several posts I've seen online, because of an amendment to The Former Presidents Act of 1958 made in 2013, a former president who has been removed from office due to impeachment and conviction is still guaranteed lifetime Secret Service protection.

No, actually, being barred from holding office requires a specific judgement, it’s not automatic. You have to issue that judgment specifically.

And there is no existing law and nothing in the Constitution re if he keeps his pension etc. if he’s NOT removed but does receive the punishment of not being allowed to hold office. There’s no case law because it’s never been done.

Article I, Section III

Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

After freshman GOP Rep. Nancy Mace announced she would be opposing President Donald Trump’s bid to overturn the election, the single mother of two feared so much for her life that she applied for a concealed carry permit and sent her kids hundreds of miles from D.C.

Another GOP House member flew home expecting to be greeted by concerned constituents after he endured the attack last week. Instead, what he and GOP colleagues heard chilled them to the core: “Do you think that Congress got the message?”

One GOP lawmaker who bucked Trump on the floor last week, Rep. Peter Meijer of Michigan, even suggested that fears for their personal safety had influenced some of his colleagues to support Trump’s challenges to the results of the election.

“They knew in their heart of hearts that they should've voted to certify, but some had legitimate concerns about the safety of their families. They felt that that vote would put their families in danger,” Meijer said recently, noting the death threats that some Republicans have received after standing behind the Electoral College results.

There is particular fear among Republicans in Trump-heavy districts who voted against the GOP’s doomed bid to overturn the election results. Many came home last week to find constituents — preachers, school superintendents, churchgoing men and women — cheering on the effort rather than condemning it, according to multiple GOP lawmakers.

“Both parties have extremists,” said the GOP lawmaker. “There's a difference in our crazy people and their crazy people. Our crazy people have an excessive amount of arms. They have gun safes. They have grenades. They believe in the Second Amendment. They come here and Trump's made them think this is the Alamo.”

So we're holding a political party hostage via fear for their family and themselves. Huh.

That’s how awful this has become. Meijer doesn’t live in a district like that, so he doesn’t care. Something really fucked-up happened and she can’t disclose it, yet, to protect her security.

But she does disclose that she was afraid to be locked down among certain other members of Congress, who would disclose her location to people who wanted to harm or kidnap her.

The gamer's YouTube page shows videos of conversations between Estavillo and other players where he is often vulgar and sexually explicit. One video shows Estavillo cursing at a Sony operator.

But Estavillo says there's nothing wrong with that and he should have the right to say those things: "I'm not inciting violence, I'm not actively threatening anyone. I'm not a hateful person, but I believe hate speech should be protected. Sony shouldn't be able to censor what people say in a public forum".

It “will be wild.”

At the rally before the riot, Trump said:

“Republicans are constantly fighting like a boxer with his hands tied behind his back. It’s like a boxer. And we want to be so nice. We want to be so respectful of everybody, including bad people. And we’re going to have to fight much harder. …
“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.”

“When you catch somebody in a fraud, you are allowed to go by very different rules. So I hope Mike has the courage to do what he has to do, and I hope he doesn’t listen to the RINOs and the stupid people that he’s listening to.”

“We will never give up. We will never concede. It doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved. Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore, and that is what this is all about. And to use a favorite term that all of you people really came up with, we will stop the steal. …
“You will have an illegitimate president. That is what you will have, and we can’t let that happen. These are the facts that you won’t hear from the fake news media. It’s all part of the suppression effort. They don’t want to talk about it. They don’t want to talk about it. …
“We fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

“Now it is up to Congress to confront this egregious assault on our democracy. And after this, we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you. … We are going to the Capitol, and we are going to try and give — the Democrats are hopeless, they are never voting for anything, not even one vote, but we are going to try — give our Republicans, the weak ones, because the strong ones don’t need any of our help, we’re try — going to try and give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”

Unity requires accountability.

This isn't about abandoning the right-wing at all. If you let them off the hook, and don't hold them accountable for their actions, you're excluding them from part of a functioning society.

Unity under the law. Equal treatment for all.

Investigate, Impeach and prosecute as the laws prescribe. That's how you get unity.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/01/thoroughly-respectable-rioters/617644/

The part that I am thinking about (quoted in case it's not a free article)

The members of the mob that attacked the Capitol and beat a police officer to death last week were not desperate. They were there because they believed they had been unjustly stripped of their inviolable right to rule. They believed that not only because of the third-generation real-estate tycoon who incited them, but also because of the wealthy Ivy Leaguers who encouraged them to think that the election had been stolen.

There’s ample precedent for this. When the Ku Klux Klan formed during Reconstruction, according to the historian Eric Foner, its leadership “included planters, merchants, lawyers, and even ministers. ‘The most respectable citizens are engaged in it,’ reported a Georgia Freedmen’s Bureau agent, ‘if there can be any respectability about such people.’”

Respectable people can be very dangerous. President Ulysses S. Grant responded to the outrages of the KKK in the Reconstruction South by sending the military to crush the Klan and the newly formed Department of Justice to prosecute it. For a time, the effort was successful.

Nevertheless, the paramilitary wings of the Democratic Party, determined to disenfranchise Black voters and restore white supremacy, reconstituted themselves. Only this time they left the masks off, so everyone could see how respectable they were. Operating openly, they were far more successful than they had been while clad in their goofy costumes and masks, taking on names such as the White League and the Red Shirts. They terrorized, murdered, and intimidated Black voters and their white Republican allies in order to excise them from the polity and restore Black people to a state of near-slavery.

Yeah, it's one thing to say that impeaching Trump at this point (one week of his presidency to go) and having a long, drawn-out trial where his name and face are in the news constantly might not be in the best interest of the country's mental sanity (part of me gets that argument), but to suggest that Biden pardon him? I would like to remind everyone of the Beer Hall Putsch, what happened after it, and how it set the stage for Adolf Hitler and the Nazis to take control of Germany.

Short version: On November 8, 1923, Hitler and his followers took the beer hall in Munich hostage and strong-armed the people there into joining them in a march to the city hall with the intent of taking the city council hostage. The crowd of over 3,000 was met by the Munich police, who were tipped off to what was going on. A riot ensued, with 16 Nazis and 4 Munich cops killed. Hitler was arrested 2 days later and tried for high treason. Although Hitler came close to being acquitted, he was convicted. The judges overseeing the trial was sympathetic to him and his cause, and only sentenced him to 5 years in prison and a fine of 500 reichsmarks. Hitler only served 9 months of his sentence before being released for "good behavior." During that time he wrote Mein Kampf and rethought his strategy. Instead of taking control of Germany by force the Nazis would instead go through legal channels, such as getting into government and being elected to the Reichstag. In 1933, Franz von Papen conceded his position as Chancellor of the Reichstag and made Hitler Chancellor, with, Papen as Vice-Chancellor. President Paul von Hindenburg hated Hitler but Papen figured that this arrangement would put them in a position to keep Hitler and his Nazis in check. We all know how this turned out.

Why am I telling this story? Because this is what happens when you don't hold traitors and seditionists accountable. They see that they can get away with their actions and rhetoric and either rev it up or take it to more covert but obvious means. Trump, his enablers in the Cabinet and both houses of Congress, and his white supremacist cult must all be held accountable and face serious penalties.

I would like to remind everyone of the Beer Hall Putsch...

I'm by no means a scholar on this but I'd argue we're past the Beer Hall stage and we're now seeing the consequences...the debacle at the Michigan state house was our Beer Hall. That was normalized as "patriots being patriots" by far too many people and I believe the lack of consequences for those assholes emboldened others.

The last phrase, "Trump, eres un pendejo", which is not subtitled in the video, means "Trump, you are an asshole". I was at that concert, along with 200K more people. The most attended concert I've been to in my life, and it was EPIC. The energy of the crowd was so intense. They played "Fearless", and they had the surround sound they were using during that tour, and the "you'll never walk alone" chants at the end of the song could be heard around the Zócalo, Mexico City's main square, it was absolutely beautiful.

I've seen Us+Them tour show in Lithuania in 2018 and they used basically the same video effects for the song. The difference was that they added even more mean photoshopped images of him into the mix, and also updated some of the quotes with I guess more recent ones. It was an amazing experience (this song and the whole show in general) in the arena, I can only imagine how much more powerful it was over there in such a huge crowd.

Biden should invite Roger to perform this at the inauguration.

Putting metal detectors inside the Capitol seemed somewhat strange a few days ago but as this stuff trickles out it's very clear the Capitol Police don't trust some of the Congressional membership. A reasonable conclusion is there are some very serious allegations being investigated.

From what I understand, members of the House don’t trust other House members.

Rep. Boebert from CO and Rep. Cawthorn from NC have both indicated that they were armed on the floor the day of the attack, even though guns are banned in the Gallery. Boebert was specifically counseled by the Sgt. at Arms that she could not carry in the Gallery. New members are given pamphlets indicating that guns are banned in the Gallery.

https://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/madison/2021/01/08/madison-cawthorn-says-he-armed-during-capitol-invasion-jan-6/6594808002/

Boebert was one of several members who threw a shit fit over the installation of the metal detectors and refused to allow Capitol Police to search her bag when it set off metal detectors.

https://nypost.com/2021/01/13/rep-boebert-clashes-with-capitol-police-over-metal-detector/

The metal detectors were installed by request of the Democrats who now feel that some Congressional members not only helped plan the attack but are also armed.

A new House rule will be voted on (1/21), likely to pass with Democratic majority, where those who flout the metal detectors will be fined and the fine will come out of their checks.

Boebert has been very clear about her intention to carry while in the Capitol, she even made a campaign ad about it. Before the events of Jan 6 the subject of guns in the Capitol was debatable...post Jan 6 it's rightfully become a red line, heightened by serious allegations alluded to by Reps AOC, Sherrill, among others but not fully made public.

I keep coming back to this line in particular:

The FBI has warned lawmakers in closed door hearings that they may be shocked with what comes out.

Interesting article in the Atlantic.
After 17 years without a federal execution in the United States, the Trump administration has gone on what can only be called a killing spree. (https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/01/trump-putting-machinery-death-overdrive/617682/)
If the Trump administration is successful in carrying out this last execution, it will have conducted more federal executions in the final months of the president's term than in the last 67 years combined.

As a Canadian who's watched several people close to me get pulled further and further into the Trump cult (which, by the way, is there precedent for U.S. presidents having like die-hard, self-identified SUPPORTERS - i.e. not just admirers or whatever - in foreign countries? Like, I haven't seen the red hats myself, but I suspect they do exist in a closet somewhere), I just want to say thank you to you folks who have had the courage to try to engage the other side, despite the futility of it.

Watching the Capitol insurrection live was totally terrifying to me. As it was happening, I finally went out to the kitchen to ask my partner if she knew what was happening and she nodded, like yeah, look: pictures she took minutes before on a walk with the kids, of like a mini-parade of trucks (3-4) decked out in gaudy Trump decor. Stop the Steal and all that bullshit. This is in downtown Toronto, right in front of my house. It's mind-boggling. I'd echo what some of you guys were saying about watching the live footage before anyone knew how it would end: that 9/11 gut-level realization that something rotten has found its way into the centre of things.

Frankly, coming here into this thread over the years has felt like a much-needed grounding in truth and reality at times. It might sound ridiculous from someone who usually doesn't post, but it's one thing to read respected news sources etc. and random public commentary, and something else to read similar thoughts from people whose perspectives I've come to know and trust.

I hope you all stay safe over there the next few days.

SO. It's 12:01 central time. We're now counting down the HOURS until the end of the Trump presidency.

We all said it was impossible, and then, shuddered with horror as the grim reality of Nov 2016 dawned on us.

We've spent almost half a decade saying "can you believe what this motherfucker said TODAY?!" Every time we thought he'd sunk to the lowest possible level, he sunk lower.

And we survived it. It's ALMOST FUCKING OVER!

Trump can literally see the Biden inauguration signs from the white house, where he's steadily blaming everyone but himself, and refusing to hold on to ANY shred of dignity.

But, it will be Jan 20th in 48 hours. And, even though Biden's inauguration is being held in a fucking "green zone," surrounded by more troops than we have in Afghanistan and Iraq combined, it's HAPPENING.

Think of it. This is THE LAST Sunday night/Monday morning of Donald Trump's horrific presidency!
