So, a friend of mine has been shitting herself over Tori Amos for years, and it has always irritated me to no end. But, I finally checked out some of her early works over the holiday (Choirgirl and Little Earthquakes) . . . and holy shit is she awesome. I guess I had to grow up a little to really appreciate it.

Now I've got another artist with a deep catalog to slog through. Good times. If you're into Trent's spooky piano tunes, you really really should give this woman a listen if you've not already. I daresay her style is, at least partially, the origin of some of those spooky piano tunes.

I love Tori. Little Earthquakes is for me the quintessential fall/winter autumn. Every year I come back to that and have it on repeat.

And might I suggest her song Past the Mission, featuring a certain Trent on vocals?

i loved her for a while in my youth- the more wild abandon records (earthquakes--->venus, with boys for pele being my favorite of the lot). since then though, she's taken a turn to the adult contemporary side of things, a move which turned me off to her right away. i hardly ever listen to those first five records anymore, but they still hold up when it happens.

I adore her. Some of her most recent work has really disappointed me, but her latest (the semi-symphonic Night of Hunters) was terrifically on the mark again.

My favourite album has to be Boys For Pele though. It came out around a time when I was fascinated by ideas regarding femininity, and the picture of her breastfeeding that piglet combined with the glorious original album version of Professional Widow still stand out to me as decisive moments in my formative years.

But all in all, most of what she's done is brilliant.

In my opinion everything after Strange Little Girls has been dreadful (with very few exceptions). That said, everything up to that point is strong enough for me to see at least 2 shows every time she has toured for nearly 15 years. I haven't been BLOWN AWAY by her live show since 2001 but for some reason I keep coming back.

She will likely always be my favorite artist in that I found her music at a pivotal point in my life and I have met some of my very closest friends through her music. If for some reason you haven't checked out Boys For Pele yet do so ASAP. It is by far my favorite record of all time.

Yeah I know a lot of people really enjoyed this last tour and I genuinely wish I'd enjoyed it as much as everyone else did. :( I saw the Oakland show which was in the top 3 worst Tori shows I have ever seen then came home and decided at the last minute to do the last LA show. Supposedly that second LA show was the "best of the tour" according to many but something just didn't click for me. It was definitely a GOOD show but one of my BIG complaints this tour was some of the quartet arrangements felt too rushed for me. Father Lucifer in particular was just waaaay too fast for my taste. I will say I was ELATED to hear Ode To The Banana King after waiting all these years for it!

Tori announces her next album, Unrepentant Geraldines, to debut in the spring of 2014.

I have been a huge fan of Tori but for the last couple years, I've been out of her. I mean, I was one of those crazy fans, collecting all kinds of Tori shit and I even have 3 Tori related tattoos. Nowadays, I think she is more concerned with her aesthetic than the music. I mean, I think that Scarlet's Walk was the last great Tori album. I still want to like her but I'm not too excited about the upcoming album.

shame thats what she turned into but i have to agree.

i remember crying myself to sleep nightly with a healthy rotation of under the pink, boys for pele, and from the choirgirl. it's just a disappointment for fans exactly like yourself. you've literally indebted your body to this woman and now she all froufrou at best. :/

Is this going to be another orchestral/classical album? If so, count me out. Tori is an incredible musician, and I've loved her albums up through Midwinter Graces, but I really cannot get on board with this shift in style she's been doing since 2011.

EDIT: Oops, should've googled before I said stupid shit. I'm interested in this album, now that it's being specifically noted as a return to pre-Night of Hunters style music.

I used to be a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE Tori fan (3 Tori tattoos, a milk crate full of Tori collectables, etc). But I think she has gone down hill the past few years. I don't know what to make of this song. However, I'm glad she has ditched the glam persona (i.e. the wigs, makeup and fashion). Personally, I think her singing about religious myths, etc is getting a little tiring for me. I don't know. Maybe I need to listen to it again.

Little Earthquakes is one of my favorite albums of any artist, but she spun off into some weird lyrics weirdness that I couldn't interpret after that. I get a few things here and there but mostly not. I love the cohesive theme of Earthquakes, it's brilliant. I still listen to it, it never gets old. I don't know why that album resonates so much for me, but it does. The rest requires a Tori Amos Decoder Ring that I do not possess.

Do you have pics of those tattoos posted? I'd like to see them.

I think that Tori's first four albums (not including Y Kant Tori Read) are the best, with Under the Pink being my favorite. Her post 90s work is more hit-or-miss, but I liked most of it. One problem, IMO, is that her later-day albums have too many songs on them. Just because you can fit 80 minutes of music on a CD doesn't mean you should put 80 minutes of music on it.

Still, I really liked American Doll Posse and Abnormally Attracted to Sin. I enjoyed Night of Hunters, although I prefer her more alt. pop sounding albums over the classically inspired material. I don't really remember Scarlet's Walk and I HATED The Beekeeper. That was a low-point, IMO, although she came back strong with the follow-up, American Doll Posse.

I really enjoyed the new song and am looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

I've seen her six times and am going to the Boston show this summer. She's always amazing in concert.

Scarlet's Walk was the last great album that she made.

Trouble's Lament is kinda catchy. It's the best lead single that I've heard of hers lately.

Not digging the new single. I'll definitely give it more chances and see if it grows on me, but unlike many other of her songs that had me from the very first go, this one just isn't really catching me that way.

Random Tori trivia from my life: on one tour I did, the song Crucify was the first track on the CD that was stuck in the player at FOH. Every day, for four months, I used that song when I had to walk the arena floor to verify that everything in the PA system was firing properly. Most the crew hated me for it, but I never got tired of hearing that song. And it sounds damn good on full size touring rig.

I can't remember ever listening to her. I wouldn't be able to pick out one of her songs. But I should give it a try.

I know a girl who is obsessed with her. But she is one of those women who turns literally ANY topic into a rant about feminism. So I just assumed this would be a lot of vagina power stuff or something.

I really enjoyed reading that article. It wasn't how most people would rank her albums. I was expecting to see her first four albums in the top four, with her later-day albums at the bottom. I may not agree with the ranking, but the article was thoughtful and well written.

http://www.allmusic.com/album/unrepentant-geraldines-mw0002622301

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine [-] (http://www.allmusic.com/album/unrepentant-geraldines-mw0002622301#)Unrepentant Geraldines (http://www.allmusic.com/album/unrepentant-geraldines-mw0002622301) -- its title so knowingly Tori (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/tori-mn0000792530) it verges on parody -- finds Tori Amos (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/tori-amos-mn0000792530) delivering original songs, which isn't a common occurrence for her in the new millennium. Following on the heels of the interpretive 2012 setGold Dust (http://www.allmusic.com/album/gold-dust-mw0002395654), it's the first collection of original material since 2011's Night of the Hunters (http://www.allmusic.com/album/night-of-the-hunters-mw0002149352), but it seems as if its roots stretch back even farther, as it is a bright, open collection, sometimes suggesting her early-'90s heyday but never pandering toward the past. There's a nice tension on this record, as Amos (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/amos-mn0000792530) gives her hardcore fans what they want -- left turns tempered with introspection -- while also wooing the skeptics with melody and color, giving the record a bright, open feel that stands in contrast to the handsome solipsism that characterized many of her new millennial records. Strictly speaking, there's not much here that signifies as "pop" -- there are hooks, both melodic and rhythmic, but they seem almost incidental to feel, as the record flits between meditation and extroversion, its warmest moments also being its most intimate. Amos (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/amos-mn0000792530) operates like a veteran liberated by her dedicated audience; she never once assumes she'll lose her audience, so she taunts them, sometimes seducing but often teasing, operating just outside of the parameters of what is expected or acceptable for Tori (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/tori-mn0000792530). That's the real pleasure of Unrepentant Geraldines (http://www.allmusic.com/album/unrepentant-geraldines-mw0002622301): it's lush and melodic but also barbed, sometimes seeming dissonant but often consoling, its soothing qualities eventually turning disturbing. This has long been Amos (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/amos-mn0000792530)' calling card, this shimmering space between comfort and pain, but Unrepentant Geraldines (http://www.allmusic.com/album/unrepentant-geraldines-mw0002622301) trumps its predecessors by accentuating its polarity; it either seduces with its sweetness or it provokes with its pain, and either extreme is compelling.

The bonus material on LE is just plain amazing. There's ten singles there, so it's like listening to a new (old) Tori album for the first time. The original "Mary" is far better than the remake, IMHO.

meh. i used to like her a lot. scarlet's walk was the last record i liked. i picked up the beekeeper once at hastings and had a nasty reaction to the cover. i don't really know why, i was just weirded the hell out by it.

Yeah it's not a great album cover. Especially considering there was much better images from the same promotional materials:
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r313/TheWILDheart83/CHRIS2.jpg
http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Fall05/pfaff/tamos.jpg

Unfortunately, Beekeeper was the album where she started to lose me. There were about 5 or 6 songs I really dug, but the rest just didn't click...at all. And ever since it's been diminishing returns. Except the classical album. That album was quirky, dramatic and an appropriate turn for her.

She's still phenomenal in concert though.

Same here. Under The Pink will probably always be my favorite, but Choirgirl Hotel, Scarlet's Walk and Boys For Pele all come incredibly close as well. BFP is probably her most unconventional work; you literally have to listen to the whole thing for it to make sense..
More than once, too.

Boys for Pele is the reason I like Tori Amos, but I've never seen an artist destroy a perfect album like she did with that one. I couldn't find my CD copy of it, so I bought the digital version, and Talula and Professional Widow were replaced with shit remixes... I'm actually excited to see a deluxe version of this, because you can't do a celebrational reissue with shitty remix replacements of songs.

By far my favorite album she's made... but if there's a shit house remix of Professional Widow that doesn't end with "love, give me peace, give me peace and a hard cock" I don't wanna hear it. Boys for Pele worked because of this neurotic juxtaposing between earnest confession shock moments and these small interludes that felt like amused inside jokes... in between moments where you get sucker punched by something devastating and then amusing. It was a brilliant album.

pele > choirgirl > earthquakes > pink > geraldines > venus > everything else.

i did kinda like the tornado mix of 'talula' for what it's worth... but fuck that gottabebig mix of professional widow.

in other news, some friends threw a boys for pele anniversary party with people performing covers of the songs. i did 'in the springtime of his voodoo'-- if i can get the video on youtube somewhere, i'll link later on.

otherwise, psyched about this reissue. my original vinyl copy was destroyed forever ago and i refuse to pay triple digits for it.

"The songs on Native Invader are being pushed by the Muses to find different ways of facing unforeseen challenges and in some cases dangerous conflicts. The record looks to Nature and how, through resilience, she heals herself. The songs also wrestle with the question: what is our part in the destruction of our land, as well as ourselves, and in our relationships with each other? In life there can be the shock of unexpected fires, floods, earthquakes, or any cataclysmic ravager - both on the inside and outside of our minds. Sonically and visually, I wanted to look at how Nature creates with her opposing forces, becoming the ultimate regenerator through her cycles of death and re-birth. Time and time again she is able to renew, can we find this renewal for ourselves?"

-
It kind of sounds like something out of Björk's book, but she sounds energized and ready to go so I'm alright with that.

I lost touch with her music a long time again but I still go to her live shows if I have the chance. The last show I went to she chastised some people in the front row for talking or being on their phones while she was performing. I think she went so far as to have them removed, but my memory is rusty.

I'm late on this. I'm seeing 9 shows this tour; think my total will be up to 41 afterwards. Definitely still a quality show. She's just been doing the one-woman tour thing lately, which I'm fine with. She's got a variety of keyboards and loops and effects in lieu of a real backing band now.

reindeer king is the best tori album opener since beauty queen/horses. holy shit. i wish the album continued in that vein, because the next few songs were pretty "meh" to me...up the creek & wildwood are both really nice, chocolate song is pretty good, and bang is great. that's as far as i've made it so far. overall, i'm enjoying it, i just wish more of it had the haunting beauty of the opening track.

I think Boston was around 90 minutes. Keep in mind, at a rock show you have your guitar solos and extended jams. This is just Tori singing, solo, which will be very demanding.

I assume she's just trying to preserve her voice for the entire tour and/or for future tours. She is 54 now, after all. A few more songs a night would be great, but she's deliberately cut the fat from these shows. I don't remember setlists being this consistently great since probably 2001.

It's been maybe the worst-kept secret for most of this year, but Tori will have a new book coming out on May 5, 2020. I'm told this will be followed by both a new album and tour in the Fall.

"A timely and passionate call to action for engaging with our current political moment, from the Grammy-nominated and multiplatinum singer-songwriter and New York Times bestselling author Tori Amos.

Since the release of her first, career-defining solo album Little Earthquakes, Tori Amos has been one of the music industry’s most enduring and ingenious artists. From her unnerving depiction of sexual assault in “Me and a Gun” to her post-September 11 album, Scarlet’s Walk, to her latest album, Native Invader, her work has never shied away from intermingling the personal with the political.

Amos began playing piano as a teenager for the politically powerful at hotel bars in Washington, DC, during the formative years of the post-Goldwater and then Koch-led Libertarian and Reaganite movements. The story continues to her time as a hungry artist in Los Angeles to the subsequent three decades of her formidable music career. Amos explains how she managed to create meaningful, politically resonant work against patriarchal power structures—and how her proud declarations of feminism and her fight for the marginalized always proved to be her guiding light. She teaches us to engage with intention in this tumultuous global climate and speaks directly to supporters of #MeToo and #TimesUp, as well as young people fighting for their rights and visibility in the world.

Filled with compassionate guidance and actionable advice—and using some of the most powerful, political songs in Amos’s canon—this book is for anyone determined to steer the world back in the right direction."

Inspired by the conversation in this thread, I went back and listened to my original pink-colored press of 'Under the Pink.' And you know, despite cramming so much music onto a single disc, other than it being a little too quiet and the wear and tear of time (some pops and ticks here and there) I think the record sounds pretty darn good, and honestly blows out of the water many modern 2LP presses in my collection.

Am I still tempted since I adore this album? Of course! But I'm starting to hit storage limitations and need to start being a little pickier about what I buy. So maybe this one isn't essential for me.

If the original sounds great, then by all means you shouldn't feel obligated to splurge on another copy! I guess I should preface the vinyl complaint specifically with the Music on Vinyl repress which sounds bad, and the "remastered" reissue which somehow sounds even worse?

Unless I missed out on something, the original version of the album has been OOP on physical format since the original release. They messed with Professional Widow by replacing it with this sorta dance remix and changed Talula into the version from the Twister soundtrack. It was a really weird thing. It was only available on digital formats for a while like that too, but it seems they've restored it to the original version on Spotify.

I haven't loved an album of her's in years, but she is always an AMAZING show.

She's always fantastic.

Ocean to Ocean was released two years ago, so I'm surprised that she's still touring behind it. Excellent album. She has such a huge body-of-work, I think a lot of fans, myself included, tend to overlook her more recent albums.
